Changed over to steel to avoid any potential heat problems from the turbos.

Looks awesome Charley. I'm just wondering though. Are the two hood latches cable operated? Are they safety latched? I really like that setup. I'd love to see how that works. Insanely awesome as usual though.

Looks good. Whats the story on the hood latch system? The hood definetly looks cleaner with out the hood pins. Did wheel to wheel do the work?

The Mule looks even better! Who'd a thunk it?!? The hood looks awesome, cleaner and meaner!, The latch system is trick!

The work was done at Wheel to Wheel. They took a NOS GM cowl hood and removed the inner structure to punch the louvers. Then they built their own structure. I think if you look close you can see tubing going down the center. Yes their are cables to the latches and safety catches. The two containers on the firewall are rad overflow and power steering.

Looks awesome Charlie!! It keeps getting better!! I used the same style latches on the 57. I didn't like the gold cad plating on mine so I sent them out & had them cad plated silver. Just a idea?? Who am I to criticize the baddest 69?? LOL???

Ha ! That was supposed to get done but didn't.

The hood has a round tube perimeter with a single tube down the center to add structure. Most of the factory bracing has been removed to clear the louvers and new latching system. The latches are a factory Audi part.

Kurt

PS: sorry about the gold Charley......

Welcome, Kurt. I didn't realize you had registered here at Lateral-g.

That's a slick hood. Charley, did you guys monitor under hood temps before the louvered hood was added? I'm just curious how much of a change you've seen (or will see).

Looks great, great creativity in the louvers...and as an added plus, they can vent all of that high pressure air building up under there when the car hits 150+...

Yeah. I remember Mark talking about venting the hood for just that reason back when the car was just an EDP coated shell. Only the conversation centered around a slightly higher terminal velocity. :D

Wasn't it difficult to get the silverpaint right, I assume you didn't repaint the whole car.

I still say BIG RED is the baddest and MULE is the coolest. Were gonna have to see some track time from the MULE to overthrow BIG RED as the baddest. hint. hint. :

Charlie...looks great. Did you have that hood sent up to Canada to be painted by the same company that did the Mule? I know silver is pretty hard to match although I think that color was a Chrysler color. Silbersee Silver or something like that. Maybe it's easier when you have a published formula.

Anybody wanna guess what Charley has in store for us next?

Yeah...a kitchen sink. :P Seriously though, the only other major changes you could do would be a new paint scheme, something like Foose does (not that it needs it) or a full custom interior.

Other than that...it's perfect.

Well, it looks like he's gonna send it out to Japan where they are gonna turn it into the meanest looking transformer ever. In fact, it's supposedly just gonna transform into a giant robot, walk up to you (as you piss your pants in fear) and say "Jackass....", turn around, turn back into a Camaro, and drive away.

clill
05-03-2005, 08:07 PM
Wheel to Wheel did the paint in house. They are a pretty big outfit and do show cars for people like..ooooooooo GM... They said if I had the code they could make it match. .. I have nothing else planned that I want to do to the Mule. Foose style of paint and fancy interior is neat but that is not what the Mule is about.

Wow!! The Mule looks great! That turbo arrangement looks almost just like mine, but better. :hail:

It gets very hot in there. After I drive you could burn yourself on the hood hinges. I, too, started with a stock steel hood and removed the skeleton, or most of it. I think the high-tech look of that car makes the louvers completely cool. They'd look silly on my classicly painted car, though.

I have to say this (type this) If not for the Mule, I would not be cutting a nice vert up to make a twin turbo nightmare with no top and 35K in parts waiting in my garage to be welded and bolted on. I have always been a purist, love em the way the General made em kid of a guy. But the Mule, well, It made me appreciate the wicked new age computer cars and made me want one too. Can I get a witness? Seeing what Jody has done, Steve, Scott, Stu, and many others here on their rides makes it a sort of competetion and a good one at that.

Last Thing, how many guys here have a car that is Identified by two words and known by most car guys in the USA?

The Mule. Baddest 69 in the USA. At least for this Fat Ass White Boy.

"BIG RED" originally did it for me. Then the "Red Witch" came along. I had this nice restored 68 Camaro, and after reading the Red Witch article in '96, it was no longer good enough. Tore it apart and here I am. Charlie just has all the cool cars doesn't he? :hail: :hail:

I would think cutting the louvers would help stiffen it up as well. I know by taking a 1/8th inch piece of aluminum and punching holes and flaring those holes (like on Stuarts car between the rad support and header panel) makes it very stiff.

Is Mark Stielow livin my dream life or what?

Here he goes and sells arguably the greatest street machine ever built, yet he still gets to play with it every once in a while even though the cars new owner lives on the other side of the country. The man is livin my dream life...I'm tellin ya!

I've seen that hood in person. The underside looks like it's been modified, like some support was added to the hood to stiffen it. I could be wrong. It is definitely sweet...nice construction. I never get tired of seeing that car...I love the custom rad support and the hood latches. Like I said...it's missing a kitchen sink and then it's done. :P
