View Full Version : So, how was your day?

Steve1968LS2

Most likely better than mine.. lol

Remember the "Penny Lives" thread? Well in the words of Borat "Not so much..."

http://picsorban.com/upload/broked.jpg

We should have the whole engine out today.. rebuilt tomorrow and back in completely Wednesday. Fun huh?

The new quote for the day "The first 98% of building a car is easy, it's the last 2% that will make you cry"

We had low oil pressure (8 psi) at idle. Dropped in two quarts and it went up to 25 psi at idle. We though it was the oil pump o-ring, maybe the pick-up tube.

So far the o-ring is perfect. We pulled the cam to have a look and noticed the journals (that ride in the cam bearings) had grooves on one side and not on the other. Considering the cam is new it shouldn't of had any grooves.

Thinking there might of been a heat treating issue, not sure until we tear it down and send the part to the experts. The cam was a custom grind and even with COMP working miracles in customer service it would take three days to grind a new one. By the way, the CS at COMP has been top notch. I really couldn't ask for more.

Old cam specs:
230/232 .591/.595 114+2

New cam specs:
232/234 .595/.598 112

Will be a little more lopey. I don't think the power curve will change much. COMP has this in stock and is going to next day air it to me.

We will tear down the block, check everying and toss in new bearings where needed. we will then tripple check the pickup tube and reasemble the engine.

Will hopefully fire it up Wednesday late.. hopefully.. lol

The cam scoring could have caused the oil pressue issue although it wasn't that "loose". Will know more tomorrow when we have her torn down completely.

Penny will live, just not today..

Just like in the build, it's always the little crap that gets you.

Does remind me of a dumb mistake I made years ago, kind of off topic, but I thought it might make you laugh.

Ever shim an oil pump with a welch plug? Know what happens when you do? Oil pressure is fine at idle, but as soon as you give it some gas, the bypass opens, lets the oil in, but it won't bleed out and locks the bypass closed. Did you know you can actually blow an oil filter right off of a 409 with this little trick? :wow: 'Bout peed my pants when it exploded the filter off of it's mount. Took me a few to figure out what I had done wrong!

I was going to ask if you used a double roller timing chain on your engine. Reason I ask is because some of the sets have oil pump shims with them. Similar to what ProTouring442 had mentioned the driverside shim can be flipped upside down and still bolt on. It will cut off 2/3's of the oil passage to the upper engine. Something to look into if you did have shims. Dont ask how I know. :faint:

wasn't this motor dynoed, why was the low oil pressure not caught then?? would of eliminated all of this and is exactly what dyno testing is for

Oil pressure was fine on the dyno. It wasn't "endurance tested" for a long period. It was ran in then tested in stock form. Then tested with the heads and the last 10 pulls were made with the new cam.

Also, there's no evidence the low oil pressue is related to the cam issue. I feel the low oil pressue is a problem with the pick-up tube (crack or such). Will know for sure today.

Like I said, just part of the "car building experience".. what can ya do?

Yep, everything has been thouroughly cleaned, inspected, cleaned and redone. The oil pump has been rebuilt, ported and double checked.

The oil pan has been tanked, scrubbed and checked over.

The factory oil pump seemed a little wacked. the valve was sticky. Hard to know for sure at this point. I will send the cam to COMP so they can check it out.

We may never know what happened but we are going on the principle of "replacing everything it could have been" :)

Hey, it's a learning experience and will make getting the car done that much sweeter. (I tell myself that as part of my therapy.. lol )

Dad to hear, sounds like a very dry start. Any warranty from GM on a new LS2? Probably was damaged on the intial fire. Too tight tolerances will kill one. Of all the issues I am hearing with GM crate motors I am growing less fond of them.

I don't think the warranty applies if you swap heads, cam and intake then dyno flog it.. lol -- sorta hard to blame GM.

We had TONS of oil pressure on the engine dyno. Then again all it takes is one pull where it drops. Engines blow up, it's in there nature. The whole process of an engine working is extremely violent if you think about it, it's nearly amazing that they work as well as they do.

Should have the engine back together today and back in the car tomorrow. In a month it will just be a "funny story" that I can tell when I'm out cruising around the Camaro.

The block was steam cleaned at the shop next door, cleaned some more then steamed again. Every part was cleaned and re-cleaned. We will run some dino oil through it on start up then then drain and refill.

We added an f-body oil pan, pick-up tube and windage tray. I guess there could have been some sort of contamination. We did clean it good though.

Could of a been a problem that started on the dyno and got worse, hard to say.
