View Full Version : Car Just STOPS!! Engine or Electrical?

I took my Camaro out for the first time today. I was cruising around for a couple of hours and about half way through I was at a red light taking a left. Immediatly after the left I took a really quick right. At MOST I was going 15 by this time, and in the middle of the right turn the car DIED! Just shut off...steering went, gauges, engine...everything.

I got over to the side of the road, put it in park and restarted it just fine. No problem!

This is not the first time though...which is why I just started again and went about my drive. Last time I was going about 5-15 as well, turned into my driveway and it crapped out in the same way. It was while turning as well. That time is scared me a bit, but hadn't happened since.

Any ideas what could cause this? Because losing steering while turning and ending up in the other lane is not a good thing...luckily there was no one behind me or coming at me and I was able to creep over to the side of the road.

Thanks

Tim

I would say its electrical...but anyone that knows me woud tell you notto listen to me about electrical. lol

Does your car have a/m ignition on it?

i would have the car idling in the driveway and start moving the harness and all other wires around to see if the engine quits that would be a good starting point. could just be a bad ground or somthing

As an FYI, I am looking into the same issue with my early Mustang. When I turn hard, left or right, it will sputter and die if I don't get on the gas and pump it. It also happens when I brake hard.

I have narrowed it down to the fuel supply or carb. If the fuel supply, it could be the wiring to the pump. If the carb, it could be the little plastic thingy called the fuel baffle.

Thanks for the info guys.

I think it is probably more electrical just because there really isnt any sputter or warning...it just cuts off entirely.

I dont have an aftermarket ignition on the car either.

The idle idea is a good one, I will start there!

Thanks Guys,

Tim

If you lose all power then you should be looking at main power and ground connections. If the engine dies and you still have power everywhere look at ignition wiring.

Had the same thing happen to me......couldn't find anything and continued to drive the car....eventually it wouldn't start and finally traced it down to a Repro Ignition switch with a loose spade terminal that Fried the Wire Harness Plug Assy (Resistance)..........Replaced everything and Life is Good....If you have a slightly Low Voltmeter reading then this is a good place to start..

I remember someone telling me he was in the same situation. it turned out that some wires were getting a bit close to the exhaust in the engine compartment and everytime he took a turn to the left, the wires would either short itself to the exhaust or burn up, not sure but maybe that can be an issue to look out for.
