home use compressor suggestions please

I'm looking to get a compressor at home. We're working on a car now but we're talking home use not something that is going to get hammered on all day every day. I looked at some craftsman in the $300 range and the reviews were totally hit and miss. I'm not sure how one person can say this is a total piece of garbage and the next guy can say it's great when they use it for the same thing and are compairing similar points. Anyway, I have no love for craftsman or anything so I'm open to any suggestions and I figure this is a good place because you guys are actually doing the same thing as I am. Not driving nails or setting up a sprinkler system *add sigh for effect*. I guess consider my price range around $300 give or take $100.

I think the new style compressors make a sound that is very annoying. Almost makes me jump when it turns on like an alarm.

I've been using a 60G, oil lube Crafsman compressor for about 3 years now. I've used it a lot. I've used air tools, sand blasted etc. Had the thing running all day before, to the point where the tank was so hot you could barely touch it. Still working fine.

When I was looking for a compressor I looked at the Sears...and I liked the Industrial version, non-oiled, it was very quiet. The non idustrial was LOUD. I was looking at 5hp,30 gallon (I think) single stage, 115/220 volts. If you go to Sears or someplace, make them fire it up...thats what I did, I didnt want one that was so loud it drove me nuts. Make them plug in some power tools like the ones you will use. I ended up buying a Puma from a tool truck at work and I like it very much. Just my .02 cents.

im with markm66 i also have a 60gal craftsman compressor and have done all kinds of work with it including sandblasting an entire car and it ran for most of the day and the tank would get pretty hott, ive had the compressor for 2yrs now and still havent had any problems.

The best deal I found for what I was looking for was the 60 gal upright Husky from home depot - I've had it a couple of years. Used it with air tools, grinders, DA's, all day and primer and painting as well. Still works great and it was around $350.

If you have a Tractor Supply Co. near you, they carry Ingersoll Rand. (Northern tool does too.) Or if you are after a portable, the $300 craftsmans do the job well- I have one at home.

I second that. I have one as well. I researched for weeks. It was the best deal I could find.
