Is there anyone here who is building a Fox body Mustang? I have a clean 91 coupe. I have built drag cars before but I dont want to go that way with this car (even though thats what most of these cars are). I love the whole pro-touring idea. There doesnt seem to be as much g-machine parts for these cars as there are the GM cars, but I am willing to do the work to make this car pro-touring worthy.

If anyone has links or pictures to get me started that would be great.

My car isn't full on pro-touring, but it has some of the goodies that would be considered aimed in that direction. I'm in the process of finishing up Air Ride on the car so that will be interesting to compare to my previous setup. There are a ton of vendors out there that sell great suspension products for these cars.

Here are just a couple that I can think of off of the top of my head.

For the rear
Steeda offers their 5-Link rear which seems to be a nice piece.
Maximum motorsports offers everything from lower control arms (I have their LCA's and I'm very happy with them) to torque-arm setups, panhard bars etc.

For the Front
Maximum Motorsports as well as many other companies offer coilover kits
Steeda offers their X2 balljoints which correct some of the geometry issues that come about when you lower a fox body.
Many companies offer bumpsteer kits to tune out the bumpsteer after lowering
Caster/Camber Plates for better alignment adjustability

Probably the first change that I would suggest is to update everything to the SN95 platform. If you do this, you will have unlimited options for braking and wheel selection. If you do this, be sure to get the spindles off of a 94 or 95 mustang (V6 or GT - doesn't matter). The '96 and newer spindles will increase the front track width. You can then use any of the factory Ford brake upgrades - ie: Cobra, Mach 1, Bullit (these are essentially the same thing - dual piston PBR's and 13" rotors).

On the rear you can swap out your axles for SN95 (this will increase the rear track width by .75") and use all SN95 brake bracketry and parts. I chose to keep my stock rear track width (FMS axles) and bought the bracketry to adapt the newer model cobra brakes from www.northracecars.com

I could go on for pages. If you have any questions about the specifics of suspension swap/conversion, drop me an email and I can point you to some sites that are very specific with what you need. I basically recreated the FMS M2300K kit, but much less money and I retained my factory rear track width.

General Information:
This guys site has a plethora of great information!

Here are some details about what I've done with my car. Like anything, if I started from scratch again, I'd probably do a few things differently, but up to this point, I'm very happy with the car. I'm looking forward to testing the Air Ride out when the weather clears up.

Well, that was long and drawn out, but I hope some of the info is helpful.

Here is a pic from one of the more fun days that I've had with my car RTH2 AutoX. It was my first AutoX, so I wasn't setting the world on fire, but it was fun!

Cool picture. I really believe the Fox bodies are the next big thing for resto-mods.

Thanks. I have started a little research. I have found alot about the SN95 brakes at SN95brakes.com. I have started sort of a handbook with all the pages I print off of the helpful websites. I would like to minitub it to get a 12 inch tire on the rear like all these guys are doing on the 67-69 Camaros. I love that look. I have found a page that shows how to do it but I am not sure what coil-overs I would need. Then there would probably be a problem with the tailpipes. Drag racers do it all the time but have you ever seen a Fox Mustang street car with a 335 tire on the rear?

I'm building a Fox Mustang that I guess could be considered "Pro-
Touring". I started with a 4 cyl '86 coupe, so far I've made my own caliper brackets to run Wilwoods on '95 spindles w/ c5 vette rotors, and also on the '03 Cobra IRS (which is coming out soon to get good bushings & other upgrades). I've also installed an 8 point cage and frame connectors to stiffen the car up. Power will come from a 306 with a turbo. The only pics I have are pretty much just mockups, hopefully this summer I'll blow the whole thing apart so I can paint it. Progress is kind of slow because I don't have the budget of alot of other guys, so I've made everything for the car (except for the hotside of the turbo stuff). Here are a few pics:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y130/bobbaganoosh/DSC01240.jpgI had to go into the harness to remove a few unneeded wires, so it's a mess in that pic. It dosen't look so great right now but I hope it will when I'm done!

Welcome and good luck with your project!!

You would definitely need to tub it. I was able to get 275's all the way around on my 91 I used to have and it was tight. Here's a pic.

You can get pretty close to a 12" rear tire without tubs.

I'm BARELY starting an '87 GT build. I've got Goodyear Eagle F1 275/40/17s on the back that measure 11.5" at the tread. (These seem to run a bit wider than most 275s). No tubbing necessary, but you have to roll the fender lip and it's crucial to have the right backspacing for the wheel (6.42") in my case...but it depends on the axles you use.

The widest tire I've seen on a non-tubbed Fox is a 295.

Check out Maximum Motorsports and Griggs for handling parts.

NICE!!!

I get that "it's just a Fox" crap all the time. I'm not one to care much what others think or say. I'm building this car for myself (not them) and it's going to be a helluva fun car when it's done. This is the car I wanted when I was 16 and broke. It's going to be reliable, quick and handle like a monster...how can that be a bad thing!

I looked through your pics, and to tell the truth, it is just a Mustang. So, since we now know this, I think you should give it to me, and go out and build a real car.

Nice lookin' car, and a vert to boot! I like! My next purchase is an ASC/McLaren Mustang (They weren't really called Mustangs, just ASC/McLarens). It will be our "fun" car, but you know I will have to do a little something here and there on it. Once I have one in my dirty little hands, I'll post pics.

Have you driven it with the suspension mods yet? What do you think? Any changes planned to what you have already done?

Shiny Side Up!

surreyboy,

Can you give a rundown on your car? Brakes, wheels, tires, engine, suspension etc?

(sorry for the hijack)
