View Full Version : What would it take to get 250mph in 1 mile

For a street car, is it possible to get to 250 in a one mile run? The last published top speed I saw was a 217 or 218 that a Hennesy viper ran in a magazine sponsored event.

What would it take, and how to get there?

a booster rocket... when you get up there in speed 400kph!! you not only need serious horsepower but you also need very...very good aerodynamics.. id start with a newer car, like a 2002 camaro. upgrade the suspension and brakes (dont scimp) horsepower wise youd need 4 times what it takes to go 125 mph just to sustain 250 mph, but attaining it in a standing mile youd need some extra.. my guess is that 1000 rwhp would get you close, so late model camaro, no wipers, mirrors, doorhandles and so on, suspension goodies galore, twin turbo ls1, high dollar clutch, tranny and rear.. should get you close..

or you could buy a funnycar and do it in a quarter of the distance

Jesel went 225 or 230 with a Nextel cup car with a big small block NA. 1500hp at the flywheel should come close in a Nextel cup car, but it will get very hard up there.

Street car isn't going to get there since there is only a couple of cars that will actually do 250mph period.

booster rocket perhaps... also i bet the 63 pontiac nelson had for sale would have the power.. i mean if it can do mid 7 second times and have over 2000 hp on tap... buy it and try it..

horsepower wise youd need 4 times what it takes to go 125 mph just to sustain 250 mph

That's actually 8 times the horsepower, so if a stock Camaro could reach 155 mph with 285 hp it would take 1200 hp to reach 250 mph, although I doubt a stock Camaro could reach 155 mph on a standing mile.

Oh, by the way, I feel it's unbelievably stupid for a gear head to say that can't be done. It's only a matter of science, testing and a lot of money. And yeah, some guts, but seems to me that there isn't any left in this forum ;)

Anything is possible.:_paranoid

I would say, yes, a street legal car could do 250 mph in the mile. A modified superstreet class C5 Vette with different gearing would probably do it. It would technically be street legal.

The venue has something to do with it as well.
For example at the SIlver State's high noon shootout and the 0-200-0.
They're both one mile events. The fastest anyone has gone is 190 in either event. The road is a narrow two lane leading to the federal prison. It's not the same road as the 90 mile event. It's traction challenged, it's always windy and usually cold. I almost went off the road on my second run when a gust of wind (approx 45 mile crosswinds) hit me, pushed the car all the way to the edge of the road. In 2005 a turbo'd 350zx from Japan went off the road and rolled into a ball. This year the same car started on fire. Also it's 6000 ft above sea level.

My tuner....DC Performance in L.A......is participating in an upcoming flying mile event against Hennessey and the like...it is a highly modded viper...240+mph ....

I have seen the car run 1/4's....it is serious....will post what it has under the hood after they run....

A stock motor Viper comp coupe ran 195mph at the Silver State and that is at altitude....

do you know when the event is occuring and what cars will be there?

Take a look at the thread right above this one about Poteet's Blowfish. That went 250 with over 1000 hp and some MAJOR aero work to give it a super slick cd. and it still took 3 or 4 miles.
Every mph after a certain point is exponentially harder to attain and a car with no aero tricks is going to hit a wall at some point no matter how much hp you throw at it.

I saw Blowfish tonight...it is at the Milwaukee World of Wheels. Watched them pull it off the trailer.

Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Mod, Alcohol... take your pick.
The difference between a race car and a street car.

Granted it is a different medium, but a boat we deal with runs around 210 in a mile with 6,000 hp. We calculated it would need no less than 8,400 hp to run 250.

Are JATO rockets considered street legal ? :)

Query on google some website about Bonneville Salt Flats Speed Week, or El Mirage in Ca.

It is doable, but if you really want ot get the skinny on what it takes, talk to the people who spend their time doing it.

Let us know what you find out.

The experts you are looking for dont build cars that pull big G's in corners just in accell and decell

Funny, but would say the same thing to the 1/4 mile guys who go well over 200 and sometimes a lot more, with less track?

THOSE RUNS ARE ON A PREPPED TRACKED . NOT A STREET COURSE . TRACTION JUST ISN'T THERE ON THE STREET TO ACCELERATE THAT HARD THE EARLY PART OF THE RUN.

I realize that at places like the Silver State, or the Texas Mile, the surfaces are just a smooth asphalt road or an old air strips and are not prepped the way a 1/4 mile track is. I didn't mean to infer that in these 1 mile events that 1/4 mile times should approach prepped drag track times. These 1 mile run events are kinda new and top speeds aren't known yet.

I have an 05 Ford GT that is being converted to twin turbos with an engine upgrade also. I hope to run it at some of these events. So, I was just wanting to talk about issues and ideas.
