What insurance do you have on your car/project? Does your company have issues with a rollcage?

Funny Scott, just responded to this same question just now over at the Chevelle board...I'm with Tamra Perto @ MK insurance in Elmhurst,IL.She is a broker for all the biggies in the insurance biz,so she can represent Hagerty if you so choose.I currently have $150K of coverage with 3 cars for under $400/yr.There are mileage restrictions but since I don't put a ton of miles on my cars,I just chose the plan that best fit my needs. The last poster over @ www.chevelles.com commented that Hagerty was $150/yr more just because of a 6-pt cage.I'm not sure how Tammy handles that, call her toll-free @ (866) 695-2774

Havertys is who I have used for the last couple years, however, I am thinking of changing in January. They don't mind rollbars, just want a full description of any and all modifications and price the policy accordingly. However the 3000 mile max a year is killing me because I drive my junk. I realized on the way home from the Power Tour that I was over my max and that was in June.....argh....
Don't forget that little issue if you are shopping and are truely going to drive your car.

I use MK Insurance as well for my 3 cars and they are very easy to deal with. MK is a sponsor on the yenko boards and most everyone who deals with them come away happy and that has been my experience as well.

Has anyone run into issues with racetracks or using your car at a racetrack, dragstrip or autocross? Has anyone ever inquired with your insurer?
I know from our open track days that some of us are covered, some have no coverage while on the track and some aren't even covered in the parking lot as a spectator!
When I checked, I'm good as long as it isn't competitive or preparing for a competetion. We don't have any timing equipment at our events and have instructors so it is technically a 'Driver's school'. :D (This is with Liberty Mutual on my Impala SS)
The Geico, Progressive and the like are the ones that don't seem to cover you at all if you are on the property of a 'racing facility'. Even in the parking lot as a spectator! Some don't cover you while on the track, competitive or not.
Thanks for the thread, Scott. It reminded me to call Hagerty for my Riviera. ;)

Haggerty has been easy to work with but they bumped my premium 50% when I added my rollbar. Said it became 'modified' although they were very flexible on the motor.

I am working on my first project...what insurance companies are you guys using for your rides? Do they cover cars that run on race gas and have a fuel cell in the trunk?
Good question. And I wonder if it makes a difference if it's in the project state for a few years.
Scott,
I am sure that being in a garage as a project will make a difference. I use Haggarty and when I was looking alot of them would be based on estimated mileage use, and alot of other factors having to do with the car being On the road. I had to send pictures of the finished car, and notarized forms saying the car was road worthy by one of my shops. So to simply get some coverage while the car is in project stage should be cheaper.
Does a car have to be insured in your state when its not on the road??

I think it does, because one of the things they base thier premiums on is location. I tried to insure my truck in NC, but it was located in MN and they said they couldn't do it.
On another note...
I am going to be shipping my car to Conneticut for a lot of work, will they cover the car if it's in work somewhere else or would my own theory apply to out of state coverage?

Scott, I am no insurance professional, but check with your homeowner's company. As long as the car is not running, you probably don't need Car insurance. See if you can just bump your homeowners to cover the value like you would a new diamond or gun collection. As long as you don't drive the car at all, just talk with them.
Shawn,
Where in CT are you shipping the car? If its close to me and you ever need help with something let me know.

Funny you should ask Scott. I just changed insurance companies. Progressive was doing my regular cars and commercial van and town and country was doing my Camaro. I had a non moving violation on my truck and progressive tried to raise my rates by $50 per month and I told them to F*****f. I called around and went to my Camaro insurance people and they ended up saving me $125 per month on all my cars. Progressive was ripping me off and trying to tag me with non moving violations to raise my rates. Town and Country also did a "agreed upon" value on my camaro in case of a total loss.
Haggerty has been easy to work with but they bumped my premium 50% when I added my rollbar. Said it became 'modified' although they were very flexible on the motor. Unbelieveable! I have NEVER heard of such a thing.

I have Grundy via NW Classic Car Insurance, and they have been great. I pay $130 a year for close to $20k full covarage and no milage limits. They know it is a project car and don't care and told me as I build the car and need the policy to increase just to give them a call...not a problem.
I first had State Farm as I do with all my other insurances...but they no longer cover project cars. They didn't cancel my policy but wouldn't increase it over the $3k it started at and that made the wife nervous as this has been quite the money pit!
FWIW, my home policy covers all the parts that aren't bolted to the car, but the body shell isn't covered.
Make sure you get an agreed upon value policy, this wont be a problem with Grundy.

I have Parish-Heacock. I tried to go with Hagerty or Grundy (forget which) but they had a problem with my roll cage and harnesses. Parish-Heacock have been very flexible - I send them updates on my car about once a year and update the agreed upon value.
Bill, my homeowner's policy wouldn't cover any parts actually on the car, even though it was not running and in a project state.

Thanks for offering me your help. I may need it. I am shipping my car to E-Muscle in Middlefield. I have been talking with Brian there and he seems to be pretty cool with everything I want to do with my project.
