View Full Version : 69 Mustang Conv. G-Machine
We have been growing pretty steadily and have 3 new exciting projects on board. Two are still too early to introduce but this on isnt.
Currently we are transforming this classic 1969 Ford Conv. into a modern G-Machine. It'll be powered by a supercharged, fuel Injected Cobra drivetrain ('93 Cobra: 5.0L, AOD and a '94 Cobra 8.8" Rear) and will be equiped with an Air Ride suspension. It will ride on 17”/18” Boze Forged Alloy wheels painted matte black to match the shelby striped hood. The body will receive several subtle changes and the black leather and suede will resemble that of an '07 interior on this build.
A BIG thanks to John @ Midnight Octane for bringing my design to life through his awsome Rendering skills. Now its up to us to make it a reality and debut this car in June at the All Ford Nationals in Carlisle Pa.

Thanks guys, especially Steve, FINALLY - not a 1st gen Camaro LOL! Being a Mustang guy it was great to actually do a Mustang. Steve's got plenty of great ideas and working with Steve on a project was great since I like the type of styling and overall look that he tries to acheive in his builds. I am just nuts over the metallic orange Nova on his site! Steve was back and forth on a couple of wheels and chose to go the direction of the 6-spoke. I agree, something a little different looking and fits the look of the car.
I'm surprised Ben, you didn't catch the seude-look texture on the center of the seats LOL! :D

Actually I noticed it yesterday on my second look...frikken sweet! I also like the extremely subtle flat hood stripe. Beautiful, just beautiful.
Ha.. thanks guys. John... I still dont know how you did the suede look, but i guess those pictures helped. Its amazing how real it looks. The wheels are my favortie part.... they really capture the stealth 'Sinister' look we were after. It actually took my client a few days to get back to me on his thoughts because he said he was too busy showing the rendering off to everone. It was a home run !

Good luck with the build Steve....keep the pics coming!!
Pics ?
Here are a few I have now.... This car is being torn down as we speak. So these are what it 'started' out as. The story behind why the interior was done first is that my upholsterer is moving down south. So, knowing the car wouldnt be completed before he left, we did the upholstery first.

Looks like a completely AWESOME project! I'm looking forward to watching the car come together.
What are you planning on doing with the front suspension?
Also, be sure you want that AOD, unless you're really familiar with them. They kind of suck (and "kind of" being an understatement). You might want to look into an AODE or 4R70W. But then again, if you're familiar with the AOD, I'm sure you have it covered.
Thanks for the advice !
This is my first Ford project.
The donar car had only 60k miles and since we are mating the SC to this drivetrain, we are going to upgrade the transmission internals anyway. I know there is a conversion for the AOD but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.
Thanks for the info. and comments !
I'm really looking forward to this build.

Yes, the factory Ford AOD unit really blows. I sold my 92 Notch about 8 months ago and a few months after owning it, the extra 30 ponies and a 4.10 gear were too much for the little AOD - I fried it. I did the whole T5 swap and never looked back. Now a nicely built street AOD would be nice and recommended. I also think that an AODE which I believe are in the 94up Mustangs could possibly work well with the Shrifter paddle shift system from Twist Machine? Just a thought. I talked at length about this possibility with Steve Chryssos and my 1992 notchback.

How I fixed the AOD in my truck was with Art Carr internals. Of course now I have no lock-up in overdrive. If I'd have been paying attention before I got into it, I would have gone AODE and spent the extra money on the controller instead of the Art Carr pieces.
I also have a 92GT that's going to get a DOHC 4.6/4R70W and was looking at the Twist Machine setup, but because of my airbag it's a no-go. However, it certainly would be possible on, say, a '69 with no airbag :D

Would it be possible to use the controler and eliminate the cruise control
and wire into the buttons to use them to shift? Keep the air bag and have finger tip shifting.
I've been thinking of this for awhile but at the moment don't have the resorces to play it out.
3/4/07 Update:
Air Ride Installed, Suspension Completed.
Body mods completed and now in bodywork / paint stage.
The engine work is almost done. Here are some sneak peak photos of Engine Mock-Up. Still alot to change and be done.... ie: Throttle Body SPacer to be removed and more paint work to the bracketry. Note: this is just mock up... alot of bolts etc are missing.

Sweet! This project looks very exiting. Always a joy to see a '69 Mustang G-Machine!
Well..... final engine mock-up is complete. Just waiting for the cars body to be done so we can put this jewel back in. The one and only problem seems to be that the intake tube is WAY off from fitting flush mounted to the throttle body. I have to investigate as to why. Perhaps the Cobra intake is different in the way it sits compared to the stock piece. I may have to either find a tube that Paxton makes for this configuration, or fab one up and then polish it up. We'll see.....

Nice intro in this month's Ford Builder magazine. Figured I would mention it since it is not a Camaro Magazine:lol:
Ford Builder hey ?
I'll have to go check that out.
I did a big press release back in January... I dont even remember the publishers we sent it to.
Well... I was really bummed and knew i wouldnt sleep last night unless i knew wtf was wrong... so i went back to the garage and played with the tube at the throttle boody. i realized that if i placed the tube flush against the throttle body that it doesnt fit at the blower. i also noticed that the blower can be rotated at the shaft (not the mounting point) by losening about 8 tabs and turning the blower and retighening them.
It worked !
Fits like a glove.

Nice change! I never realized that the '69 verts didn't have the scoops. I make s sense now b/c it's built off of the coupe platform. I think it would look killer with the Shelby scoops on top of the quarters.

Anything new Steve? Would love to see some more pics.
Russ... I should have some good pics this week. The fastback quarters took WAY longer than expected. It is NOT as easy as changing the skins. As expected alot of fab work had to be done. But way more than I anticipated. The trunk spoiler was a nitemare to work out because of the different angles and sizes between body styles. And the quarter window mechs had to be reworked because of the scoop locaton. Fastback windows dont roll down and conv's do. End result looks amazing. However... we did final block sanding this past week and color will be shot this week. Black is a Bxxxx... especialy when dealing with all that welded custom fab work.
Hey, great looking car!
We had great success with a 4R70W trans from a 5.0 Explorer... it's like an AODE with a taller first gear for moving heavier vehicles. The AODE and 4R70W both came in 5.0 Windsor pattern vehicles, the mod motor stuff is different.
We're using a Baumannator TCS (http://www.becontrols.com/products/products.htm) trans controller from Baumann Engineering - you can program 2 separate strategies (street / strip) and you have control over all the shift points, pressures and shift firmness, and torque converter lockup points. The AOD has no lockup converter.
Our 4R70W is behind an EFI 351 Windsor in a '62 Galaxie, and we have 2 shift strategies (and yes, you should be able to use a Shrifter from Twist Machine). Our main setting is fairly firm with the converter locking around 47 mph in OD. OD kicks in at about 44. It feels like a police car. The other setting raises the shift points for racing, and is MUCH firmer. All by flipping a switch. It's killer. Mark Bowler at Bowler Performance Transmissions (http://www.bowlertransmissions.com/gallery.aspx) is a guy to talk to on these... he builds the trannies and programs all the Baumann boxes for the big names, and he's a really nice guy.
Did you chop the hoodscoop in your rendering? Looks awesome.
- KO
That sounds like THE ideal set-up. I've talked about a similar set-up on another project with SteveO @ twist and one of these days I will have the design freedom and flexibility to do a similar set-up. Unfortunately there is a budget restraint on this project. As with all my builds, the car has been designed to perform and look as good as it possibly can within a 'said' budget. It will be 100% driver friendly and reliable but ultimately we had to delete some of the pro-touring luxuries and upgrades that would truly make the car perform to its fullest potential.
After "someone" dropped the AODE off the lift we had while delivering it to the trans shop to get rebuilt, we noticed the casing was cracked and the dowel pin section was badly damaged. So we decided scrap the AODE in favor of a 'built' AOD my trans shop had lying around. That trans ran flawlessly in a 10sec notchback one of his customers had. Its been 'freshened up' and all the internals were upgraded. It should work fine up against the +/- 350hp 5.0 we have for it.
Thanks for the suggestions. As always, I appreciate the feedback !
I only wish I had a little more room in the budget.
I fully understand the budget deal. My brother in law has a 2000 6-cyl Mustang with a 4R70W in it... I believe the 6 cyls are Windsor pattern also. He's parting the car. It's not going anywhere anytime soon, so if you get the itch, I can ask him what he wants for the trans.
Bill Smith Auto Parts (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/96-F150-Ford-Truck-Automatic-Transmission-2884_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33727QQihZ011QQite mZ320045088682) is another place to get good cores / used stuff cheap.
Well its (old) progress pics.... These were taken about 2 weeks ago. I dont have any new ones because my camera died. The body is assembled and we're buffing it now. I'll be installing the drivetrain next week. Then its all men on deck for final asssembly. The clock is running down...

After some long and hard thoughts, we have chosen not to complete the Mustang from Columbus. We encountered some last minute glitches and mishaps along with the timely backordered parts early on and decided we are too far behind at this point. I feel too strongly against sacrificing the safety and integrity of the car for a time restraint. I'd rather not go and finish the car correctly than rush it for the deadline, only to rebuild it afterwards at my expense.
At this time, it is not going. However, if things progress smoothly and timely in the next 2 weeks, we may reconsider but only as a last minute decision.
Update:
Well... we figured out all the issues and have them all resolved.
Work since missing Columbus involved:
-New fuel Management system
-New fuel pump
-New larger lines
-Flash the ECM
-Installing a Blow Off valve
-intake tube fabrication
-air inlet tube
-new wiring
-new 35 lbs injectors
-fabricate a bracket for the trans shifter linkage (this was a BIG deal)
Should see dyno time on Monday / Tuesday !

Thanks John....
As you know we mocked up the engine less the Blower (because it was backordered and I didnt want to have the project stalled) and THAT caused major issues later on.
Once paint and body were completed and the engine went in for final assembly we noticed the blower fit (barely) but the problem was with everything else associated. The blower sat way too close to the shock tower when mounted and the intake tube was such a tight bend I didnt think we would have been able to do it..... but we did. I have a K&N cone at the end of the tube at the drive side and the blow off is post the MAS air sensor so the air is already accounted for.
We had to cut a huge piece out of the blower mounting bracket, fabricate a new "straight" water neck out of the intake manifold and relocate the battery tray to the drive side for extra room on the pass side and it is still is tight.... but works.
Crazy amount of unforseen fabrication. This EFI setup proved to be too much for me so I enlisted the help of IDA Automotive. They really know their s#!% !
Dyno time is postponed due to poor weather here. But as soon as we get a nice day, we'll make a few pulls and tune this bad boy. Then get the top stiched up and detail it up for some nice outdoor shots. Hope to see some road course time before the end of the year.

DYNO RESULTS ARE IN !!!!
The engine internals are basically a stock '93 5.0L (cam, heads, etc).
We changed the upper and lower intake to a Cobra set up and upgraded the injectors to 35lbs from the stock 19lbs. Also bolted on a set of JBA headers and thats it.
The supercharger is a basic Paxton Novi 1000 pushing only 5psi of boost.
Base line:
Stock engine at crank = 245hp
Stock engine at rear wheels = 195hp
New Set-Up:
RWHP = 270hp
Approx. hp at crank (based on 20% loss) = 350hp
HP Gain was a approx 105hp !!
BTW... The car only weights 3100.
Should be a FUN ride....:unibrow:

i never understood why ford used different quarter panels on the coupe/vert and the fastback in 69/70 when the rest of the years they all looked alike. but doing the quarter panels like you did gave you more room in the rear and they look alot better.

Awesome car. Can you share with us how you did the fastback mods? Did you cut in a fastback trunklid with a coupe/vert lid and then add the quarter extensions ends from a fastback? I did a Boss 302 vert clone (obviously) way back in the day and wanted the look you have achieved, but I went on and used the Shelby stuff, filled in the back panel. Never was happy with the results. The dude that bought it loved it though (ha ha).
By the way you nailed what Ford missed in the fastback look you have done. I love convertibles and have owned a few 69-70's but that was always the weak spot design wise when you got to the back of the car, It's like they just gave up. Again, Shelby treatment looks great(perfect for a Shelby-mind you) But you nailed it for a stock body mod.. I am a GM man all the way, but seeing your finished product makes me wish had one of those 69-70 verts again.
Thanks again for the awesome pix!
Thanks Andrew.
Ummgawa:
I too am a die hard Chevy guy myself.... but have to admit... this is one of my favorite builds. Its so different than anything I've done. I am not turning into a Ford lover.... but it has made me like these old Stangs alot more.
These pics show how and where we grafted the quarters on. They started as full quarters (not skins). We cut them off where we wanted in order to fit them properly.
These pics dont show (what I think) you were asking for.
But I'll try to explain here:
We bought fastback quarter extensions and a fastback trunk lid (just for the spoiler portion) The major differences between the two models are that the fastback trunk lid is about 4 inches shorter than the coupe/conv. and the quarter extensions are about 2 inches longer (per side). The other major problem is that the quarter extensions are pot (cast) metal in which is impossible to weld. So the major surgery (other than the obvious quarter panel change) is that we had to cut 2 inches out of the middle of the fastback extensions and used a panel bond adhesive to attached the end face to the remaining extention. That seemed easier than cutting the last 2 inches off and fab'ing a new end. Then after both sides were done we cut off the spoiler portion of the fastback trunk lid and cut it in half. We then welded it to the conv. trunk lid and fabricated a 4 inch "filler" peice in the center.
After all that was completed we had to modify the rear quarter window track assembly so that the windows would roll down with the fastback scoops in place. (fastback rear quarter window are stationary because of the scoops).
All in all, it really was an enormous undertaking. But obviously it CAN be done.

My hats off to you dude. When I saw your build and the finished product, I thought about all of the 69-70 Stang verts that I have passed on because I could not achieve the look you have. The fastback quarters have what looks like a sweep at the top of the side profile where the Verts looks strait as a Preacher.I am certain it is an optical illusion due to the upsweep of the Fastback quarter extensions.
Do you have pix of the quarter extensions and how you modded them?
By the way thanks for the reply. Now if you'd come up brackets to install an LS motor in a 69-70....

Well, I just noticed from the pix you posted that it appears that you grafted the entire fastback quarter onto the vert, sweeping over the top of the rear quarter. If I sent you a trunk lid and a pair of quarter extensions, could you do the mod for me? If you are like me, the first time is a pain, but the second time I'm alot better. Of course, you might not want the pain again. I tell you, that mod would make even the Grande coupes look good.
They do have a bit of a bow. Its slight enough that its noticed more due to the scoop placement.
As far as doing another set..... it is nearly impossible to do anything of this nature without the actual car. Every piece is unique in its own way. If it were something to be done, I wouldnt be able to guantee the fitment because of the varibles in relation to the quarter extension fitting flush on the quarter and having the spoiler mounted so that the height is correct as well as it all lining up. Also gapping comes in play when triming the quarter extensions. The exact dimension of our set-up may not be the exact as yours. Then you may have a larger gap on one side than on the other. etc.
I think with the info provided, a experienced body shop with some custom work under their belt should be able to get the job done. But I can tell you this.... it'll be an open ended est due to the nature of the job and not being able to put an est. time on it !
Looking awesome! Great progress and great setup!

Very Cool Steve, and I agree about the difficulty of the job. On the three I have owned, I took the idea (ten years ago) to a few body shops to have the work estimated and two flat out said "no". One said he'd try but would not guarentee the results. Yours is awesome, man excellent job.
By the way thanks for all the responses and the pix. Will it be at SEMA?
Will it be at SEMA?
Trying to feel a few companys out.
Any takers?
We'll be there..... it would be nice if the car was too.

nothing wrong with being a ford guy.i like most older cars no matter who made it. ill laugh if most people dont know you change the quarters like that. i have a 68 coupe thats a california special clone but i put the gt350 side scoops on since they are functional i only had one guy call me out on that. how much more you got left to do on it.have any thoughts about a rollbar like the shelbys had.
Started the fabric Conv. top today.
Then we still have:
-power door locks and windows
-wire some misc items
-wire gauges
-install seats
-wire stereo
-fab some front bumper braces
-misc trim items
-fab some tailpipes
-install weather stipping and fuzzies
Thats about it. Basically alot of odds and ends like wiring.
The biggest item to do is repaint some panels. I am not happy with some of the finish on the front fenders. Slight sand markings in the prime coat are showing through the top black coat. Black is a bitch ! Nothing too major.

Thanks Andrew.... I've had them in boxes from day one.
The top is beautiful!
We used the Mercedes Benz Fabric (like denim).
I'll post some pics soon.
Working on a few wiring gremlins that seemed to pop up. (Actually I am just finding excuses not to give this back to its owner  )

Here is a pic of the dash.
The gauge panel and the dash pad both took some finessing but fits 'ok'.
Alot left to do... I am starting to feel the heat !

BC... thanks ... the interior will be the very last thing to put back in... maybe at the hotel in Columbus :faint:
