Thinking of a clean way to put cup holders in the center console of my 72 Firebird... cups that would drop into holes cut in front of the shifter... between the map pocket and shifter... any ideas?

Pic is not my car but gives a good clear shot of the area I'm talking about...

Not sure what if anything is under there.?
The padding and cover can be cut with an exacto knife,
but I would tape it off and be slow and easy.
It's glued down so you have to peel out the center.
Then a hole saw can be used to make the openings.
The trick is to cut the padding back at least a 1/4" larger
than the whole saw you're using so you don't burn it,
you'll be getting the stuff your cutting hot.
The fun part is finding , or making the trim bezels to fill the gap.
I've seen the top trim ring from a thermos/mug used.
A good epoxy used right should hold it together, but the best
way to do it is to machine the rings with threads and fab the lower part
as to sandwich the console pieces together. Tabs and set screws will
do the job too.
It's doable, just remember to try to make so anything that threads together
is done from the bottom so you're not trying to spin anything on the cover material or it will look real ugly.
If I was better at the computer part I would make a simple drawing and show details.
Just be sure what is benieth the area you want to cut out. If it's structural you will need to fab some bracing to make up for what you take out.

Measure three times cut once.

There is a few inches below the surface of the console before anything would come in contact with the carpeted trans hump. Maybe these cups cut down to size (depth) and then use a flat headed allen screw centered in the bottom of each cup secured to a bracket below mounted to the hump?

I'm thinking black cups... the silver may be too much...

Cool idea, but I have a feeling you are going to run out of room before you hit the trans tunnel. If it is not deep enough on the lower part of the console you could try the cup holders that Rod Doors makes that look like they would work on the front of the storage compartment. Here is there web add

If it's not too wide I can see cutting up an eBay ashtray to see if I can get one to work in there! That's an idea that won't screw up a good console...
I wonder if there's something that pulls out instead of swinging out that would fit in the ashtray? Hmmmmmmmmm...
