I hate when people ask me this question. Not because it's a bad question, but because it pisses me off every time I think about it. My dad was helping me look for a car in early 1981. One car that we test drove was a 1976 Camaro with a 350 (priced at $3,200). The car was in like new condition, and was a total blast to drive (especially for a 17 year old). My dad talked me out of it on the premise that gas was going to cost $1.50 a gallon by 1982. I am not sure where he got that crap from. Anyway, I caved and bought a POS Buick Skyhawk with a V6 in it(also priced at $3,200). What's worse is that a guy I knew at school ended up buying the Camaro and driving it in front of me evry day. That is until he wrecked the sh*t out of it eight months later...

This was my first car. My dad and I built it as a father/son project and I still own it today. I am currently in the middle of converting it to a mild pro-touring car.

I had three first cars at fifteen I had given to me a 1968 delta 88 455 possi burner, 1974 buick century 350, 1978 ford elite 351. Dad said no to the delta and the ford had three dead cylinders so I ended up with the century put a set of keystone classics a holley carb and a glass pack. Also 18 cans gloss black krylon paint it was lots of fun. The first nice car that I got was my 1966 skylark convert and still have it today that was over 20 years ago

My first car is my 69 i'm still modding today...Not that it was all that long ago. I got the car when i was 13 for my 13th bday (we'd been looking for a 69 for quite some time). That was back in 97. Since then i've painted it and put in a 355 4spd to replace the 307 3spd, and it currently has a LT1/T56. It's soon to go back to the body shop and get a new motor.

I just found this picture last week-end while going through some stuff. My first TWO cars in the same shot.

In the background is the 1977 Type LT 305 auto that I bought from the insurance proceeds from being a passenger in a violent car crash .....

The other is my first new car that I ordered from the dealership in 1984. I was already into Pro-Touring even then : I had to wait five months for GM to build me one with a 5-speed, four wheel discs and the 3.73 gears along with roll up windows........ I made the mistake of selling it when I got married. It had a Dana 44 complete rear from GM Performance and a 350 with Dart heads when I sold it.

Best memory : I happened to drive by a Chevy dealership one day when a then brand new (plastic on the seats) IROC with the 350 drove out with a slaesman and a prospective client, headed for the industrail park next door. I could not resist following. As they say, the look on the face of that salesman when a 4 year old, plain looking carb car smoked him repeatedly, was priceless.

'69 Chevelle SS396... I bought it for $1000 when I was 12, in 1994 with no engine. I've still never driven it. I've had about 3 different engines I planned on putting in it so far, but haven't done any work on it, as I've been pre-occupied with the '69 Malibu I bought when I was 15.

'86 VW Golf  totaled it 8 months later, first hot rod was a '90 IROC with 350, no extras, never lost a race. I would prefer to have my uncle's first car, a new '66 Chevelle, 396, 4 speed. Or my mom's new '68 Camaro, 327, loaded with options.

i actually started out with a 66 chevy shortwide that i put on a shortened 76 3/4 ton 4x4 chassis, had a 383/th400/205 and 4:56's and it ran 16's the one and only time i was talked into drag racing it. the 4x4 was my only form of transportation, but i also had a 63 nova project goin on, it was mini-tubbed, mustang 2 ifs, and a full cage....it got sold as a roller to pay for a set of 40" boggers and bigger lift for the 4x4.

i shoulda kept the nova, but underage drinking and gettin stuck in mud holes tryin to impress chicks was the main past time at that point in my life....... actually...... other than the underage drinkin...my past time is still prettymuch the same

Back in '87 to '90 I had a '75 Malibu, didn't know much about cars then, only that it had a 350 4 bbl. Probably a bit much for a 17 year old during winter, every panel had some sort of damage when I was done with it!

Still ran like a charm though the day it went to the scrapyard.

and stripe...swivel buckets. It was a hand me down that I drove for a year. Starting of my senior year of HS, Sept 81, my folks said they would help me get another car. We were on our way to pick up a 69 Camaro SS, 396/375, ralley green. On the way my parents said "would you rather have a corvette?"...at the time, YEA! Passed on the Camaro and got a 1978 Silver Anniv. L-82. Still wish I had gotten the Camaro. I did not find out how rare that car was until a few years later. Price for the Camaro was $1500 Price on the corvette was $8000. Working part-time making $3.35 an hour paid the $263.73 payment. Parents must have been pretty smart. I worked all of the time and weekends to make the payment...kept me out of trouble and girls pants. I made up for it in college.

AH, high school.

On the way one morning, took a new street from the bus stop...

There it was with a FOR SALE sign; 1968 Chevy2. 1 owner(lady of course), straight six, glide blue on blue (Cant remember mileage but very low and no rust. Bought it that night (800$, and father fronted the cash).

Kept it and put ALL my cash in it for 3 years (Total show car, caged, 482" th 400 and tangerined monochromatic as it was the trend then) Then realised i had accumulated a debt i couldn't pay on it (as it was mostly built on credit- Major No-no!) with my appartment, Bike(GSXR-750) and my commuter modded VW Scirocco).

Sold the bike, the car, lost my girlfriend.....And learned that you need to stick to budget if you want to see the end of your project.

Now i know! And isn't knowing half the battle!?

The guy i sold it too had a speed shop. He got it for nothin (i really cried when the flatbed towing took it away) and sold it in pieces ( i had not even ever fired the 482 and had boxes and boxes of new parts still unwrapped) and sent the body to a scrapyard as it became so stripped at a point he tought it would be better that way!!!!YES!!!Scrapyard!!! I bought the shell back from them (Paint almost intact) 2 years later (it was sitting on a rack in the end of the yard, frameless) and most of the body parts from the Speed shop owner (what was left) Got it refreshed, small blocked and at least drove it for 1 summer. Then i sold it. I wanted to prove to myself i had done this car to the end....Glad i did.

Lead.

My 69 Camaro was my first car. This easter will make 21 years. My dad paid $1900 for it. I was 14 years old. The day I turned 16 I got my license and got into a street race with a older classmate who had a 68 Camaro. Back in high school it was its original color, Frost Green. First car 55 Chev 2 door. paid $200 for it at age 14. about $150 too much back then, put it together, back when you could buy decent fenders for $30-40! 327 and Vega stall convertor-the car would have to rev up to 2000 before it even would move! All my buddies got into Camaros so i sold it for $1500 and bought a Clean white '73, but that's another story.

My first car was a father-son project, a 1966 Chevelle convertible. We did a body off "resto" on it. Dropped an LS-6 454 and a M-20 4-speed in it. It was red with a red and white custom interior. After it wiped a cam we put a roller in it, ran 12.03s quite often. I got two or three 12.01s on afternoon, kept trying for a 11.99 but just couldn't get it.

Sold it to buy a 1961 Impala 2dht, dropped a roller cammed, bored & stroked (482) 409 with 2-4s in it. :unibrow: Nice and fast, but I just couldn't keep the '09 together. I sold it to start my current project... 13 years ago! :willy:

Motor caught on fire due to metal shavings in the "rebuilt" Holley I bought from Summit. I put it out with the garden hose (air cleaner off) and being the stupid 17 year old I was I cranked it and shot about a gallon of water out of the exhaust. Bent 4 rods and cracked the heads.

Rebuilt it with the help of a buddies brother-in-law. Learned all about motors, and had a stout small block that could smoke all four 33"s in 4-low. I miss that truck.

POS '68 VW Bug. Parked it in the garage, Tore it apart. Dropped it. New interior. New VW bus tranny with hardened gears. Built the 2100cc w/ Weber 48IDA dual carbs in my room at my parents house. My friends brother did all the Body and Paint. Porsche 911 wheels. Came out sick!! We used to call it the Vag Wagon!

Drove my Mom's car as a junior in high school. A galaxy X cop car - 351C/4V/C6/9 in. Bench seat with column shift. Robin egg blue outside - black interrior. Awesome running car - looked stupid.....

First car I owned was as a senior (1979) - 67 Dart GT 273/4V/727 TF. Red outside with black inside - but buckets and console this time.

dad bought it for me in 1979 when my mom was pregnant, hoping she was having a boy to give the car to. i think he paid $50 and bought it out of a field, got it started and drove it home with no brakes, sitting on a milk crate. he "officially" gave it to me on my 12th birthday, in all it's sitting for over 20 years broken glass no interior crappy paint glory

This is a fun thread.

First Car was a 67 Camaro. 327 2bl. 3 on the Tree.<---only one I every saw.
I bought it from my girlfriends father at 15. It cost $500 and had 62k miles on it. 7 months later I turned 16.

2 weeks after birthday 16, I was racing a 70 Mustang 351. It was fun until we crossed through a intersection. We both got totaled by a drunk driver running a red light. Her father was REALLY pissed. The same year bought a 68 RS Camaro 327. It didn't run but only had to pay $50 for it. Drove it till 18. Sold it and bought a 69 SS Camaro for $975.00. Sold it to go to College.

Ty O'Neal

PS: I'm Jealous as hell of all you guys who still have their first car. You Suck!!;) I would sell my left one to have my '69 Camaro back.

my first was an '81 camaro berlinetta, willed to me by my grandma, got it when i was 14 (back in like '95). it only had the v6, but i drove the hell out of it. had all kinds of crazy plans for it, then i started tearing into it and realized the only unrotted metal on it was the trunk lid, the roof, and the hood, and it'd be cheaper and easier to start on something a little less rusted out. primer black paintjob, black nascar wheels, gutted interior. good stuff. wish i still had it sometimes, mostly just sentimental.:(

My first was an '88 Ex-State Caprice. That car was a blast. Till some idiot ran into the back of it :( .

The first car I bought was a 1962 Impala 4dr sedan for $300 dollars. About the only thing that was good about that car was that the body was completely solid. I ended up selling it when I found my '56, still kind of wish I could have kept it though.

My first car was and is my 68 Camaro bought for $800 at age 13 with a 250 inline six and a 'glide. I rebuilt it many times. It has been red, yellow, gold, and 16 shades of primer. I dated my wife in our car. While sitting in the car one Friday night, I pretended to pour a quart of oil onto her nice new blouse. The cap came off. Oil everywhere.

The car is also largely responsible for the start of Twist Machine. It is an inherent part of my family, so if you want to buy it, the price is $1,000,000.00 negotiable.

I inherited the car from my grandmother when I was 15, but lost a ring the third time I drove it and had to learn how to rebuild the motor. I drove the car for 17 years and 300k miles but of course now regret not keeping the old Gal.

Hi My first car was a 66 Chevelle SS 138 car I bought it for $500 and it looked it,but it was fast. I got it in Dec of 71 had it untill it broke my bank in April of 72 When my father cosigned for a loan for my X33 69 Z/28. He always said cars would kill me. I know what he meant now every time I think about having sold it. Wayne

My first car was a 1980 suzuki Jeep all built up for off road racing, cage, ltd slips, no nothing but two racing buckets. It must have weighed all of 1500 lbs tops. I beat the living tar out of that little rig. Jumping 5'-6' in the air was sooo much fun!

My second was what I callmy first. 1977 ford f100 shortbox stepside in amazing shape. I built the 400 to around 300 HP based on the hotrod article. Had to sell it due to college and 7 mpg!!! :D

First car was a blue 1974 base model Pontiac Firebird with a Chevy inline-6, 3spd on the floor, and a white vinyl roof.

It was far from fast, but had lots of good times in that car and it started my love of Firebirds which has now lasted 24 years. Dang I'm old!!!!!! :wow:

Sorry... only have one surviving picture of the car and that's gone MIA at the moment.:(

don't feel bad.. My dad helped me get a 71 beetle that I was restoring when my best friend was selling his 71 Super beetle rolling chassis, for 250 bucks.. So I bought it, and took the fresh 1600 I had just built for the other car and stuck it in this one. Drove this for about a yr and half got sick of VW and sold all 4 that i had acquired..lol. Now I have an itch for another one, this one will be late 50's early 60's Beetle.

Uhh, my first car, or first driveable car? :unibrow:

My first car is the 'Velle. Original 402/M20/Flame Orange/Bench Seat/True SS. I guess the purists might bash my skull in when they figure out what I'm planning to do to it..

My first *driveable* car, is my '01 Oldsmobile Aurora 4.0 V8. Not much of a performer, in comparison with P-T type cars. But I am planning a bunch of suspension upgrades & performance, to make it a little more power. Hopefully good enough to take to a few track days..
