Will arrive to New York on Saturday afternoon for a stopover on the trip to 'Vegas were we will be arriving on Monday night.
It's been a while since I was in the US last time and I have some questions.
1. Tipping is around 10%, right?
2. Taxifare from JFK to Manhattan, what should I expect to pay. I know taxidrivers all over the world tries to screw tourists.
3. New York never sleeps so most stores would be open on Sunday, am I correct?

Tipping is normal for here to be 15%-20%, but it always depends on service. But from a former server never leave less than 10%
Taxi ride in NY will never be the same no matter what, each driver is different. just tell him to run the meter, or sometime they will have a special rate for your trip especially. usually posted on the window. As all these guys are regulated. So if its not a set rate trip that you can see posted somewhere to read. Then make sure he runs the meter and don't agree to some off the wall price
Most stores will be open Sunday in the major districts. Only small mom/pop stores close on weekends anymore

Tipping is never required, however it is customary in eating or drinking establishments in which a server brings the food to you. If you have to carry your own food, no need.
I start at 15% when I walk in the door. It is up to the server at that point to increase, maintain or reduce that figure. If the service is poor I wont tip and I will tell the person why.
Some places in NYC automaticlly apply the tip to your bill. Up to you, but I refuse to do that.
It is customary to tip a bartender a buck per average drink order. If you are ordering complex mixed drinks you might tip more.

NY fares will be set in writing now. Look on the dash board rate should be there...Last time I was there it was...If memory serves me it was like $45 bucks.
READ HERE (http://www.ny.com/transportation/airports/JFK.html)
Not all stores will be open in the city...found that out when I went shopping with the wifey...

a safe bet is to take the tax amount listed on your recipt and multiply it by 2 and round up. this comes to roughly 20%.
