Hmmm... now what?
I guess PHR keeps preaching about building alternative muscle cars.. now it's time to walk the walk.. It was just too clean to pass up for that price.
Anyone in Portland transport cars??
So, what should we do? 390 engine, TKO-600 trans, Curie nine-inch rear?
Black steelies with better binders? thoughts?

Thanks, just seemed so clean.. I could care less about the drivetrain. I just didn't want to have to pay for paint/body on a magazine project car. It's not like I'm keeping this one forever :)

Hey Steve. I saw dream car garage where Peter Klut was driving a 70 GTO and it was stock looking other then the wheels and tires. It had modern bolt on stuff, brakes, 430hp motor, wheels and such, but looked clean. I always like the original muscle car look and think you guys should do the same with this. I would change the color though and change the color of the interior as well.
My 02 cents.

Sent you a pm with my numbers, as far as the build it depends on what your looking for a new GT engine would be nice with a shaker added and suspension work or a old school cammer with efi and some pressure sounds better to me, call the boys in texas and get some rear suspension and adapt it from the mustang kit beee cool they will work on it im sure.....

Very true, but if you get rid of that top that car in black would be really cool.
I was going to bid on it $12k but I forgot the auction finished today!
I am glad I forgot since you probably had a higher bid than what you won it for and then one of us would have paid much more for it.
Secondly, I do not have space for it but at that price, I probably would have come up with something.
I was thinking a 514ci 625HP Super Cobra Jet crate engine with a TKO 600. Those 514's are very reasonably priced @ $8100. How does that sound?
BTW, congratulations. You should buy it afterwards for yourself :unibrow:

So, $8100 was a good deal? It was about the limit I was gonna pay so you would have won for anything over $8500 or so.. lol
Nice to know there are still some deals out there. All I know is that the engine needs to be Big to move a 3600 lb car quickly..

I say get Roush to ante up. :unibrow: 6 speed and Cobra wheels or a oversized variant of whats already on it.

Steve, the car looks great. Should be lots of fun...Yes, big block and five speed sound like fun...of course you will need some new brakes as well. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

It is one helluva deal, IMO. Here is a link to that 514 I posted about.
http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?PartKeyField=9287
Global West and TCP makes tubular CA's + coilovers for that car. Some parts are not listed on their sites.
If you change your mind, you can always sell it to me ;)

i like it.. ive always liked the big ford musclecars, but if you have gotten it for 8.1K and are willing to spend some on getting it to handle and drive why not think a little out fo the box? my vote is on a force-fed SBF perhaps an AOD-E tranny (they are good for 900 ponies when built well) and a twist machine shifter.. turboheaders for a small ford are abundantly available at racingjunk or turbo-shops. and du the suspension up so it can turn.. add a set of boze stinger 18 inchers and leave the body and paint alone..
thats my 2 cents

Very cool car Steve. If you fly me up there I will drive it back for you for free. I dought you would go for it but might as well offer. I like the color. EFI, bigger wheels/brakes, tko600 or t56, I would have to say big block for that heavy of a car. Congrats.

Looks great! I say dump a modular motor in it, maybe a supercharger. A nice six-speed, some big brakes, and a set of 17 "Magnum" wheels from Wheel Vintiques. Put a black top on it, some nice buckets out of a Crown Vic or Mark VIII, and a stock console and you're in business!
Shiny Side Up!

ditto. I say find a 5.4 out of a newer lincoln or truck. NA and 8,000rpm would be cool!

Thanks guys.. They let me do Penny the way I wanted so I need to talk with the group on this car.
Most likely a larger displament old-school Ford mill. A 427 would be cool. Larger brakes but the wheels might not go bigger than 16's.. maybe 17's if they make them. Was thinking of black steelie but I havent looked much.
Not going to be a big dollar build. I just want it clean, low with a NASCAR look to it.
The vinyl top will go. If my shop can match the blue then it will go that or maybe some shade of blue. Will leave the vinyl chrome trim on to make the repaint eaiser. I'm thinking PROCAR front seats done in blue and a custom fabbed guage cluster since I'm sure nobody (like Covan's) makes a Torino/Fairlane one.
It's going to be project Fastlane :)

The 70 Torino Cobras w/429 SCJ's and shakers were awesome cars. Steve, thank god you said the white top will be gone. There should be plenty of pics of old 70 Torino NASCAR cars to get ideas from. I had the idea of doing a 69 Torino fastback old school NASCAR style.

I would not put a mod motor in it, fuel injected 427 ( i know its not the right year for the motor but a FI 427 would be cool), tko600. loose the vinyl roof. nice subtal hood scoop, painted bumpers hid lights modern door handles,Art Morrison Triangulated 4 link rear, god only knows what to do with the front suspension depends on the build budget cobra struts?? the front bumper needs some major reshaping to make it look like part of the body sam with the rear. interior......... wow maybe Black would look better. custom gauge cluster maybe custom dash. some custom tail lights maybe 67-8 CS mustang, some type of mesh grill, billet head light surrounds.
just a few ideas

Woah tiger.. slow down.. lol
The point in getting a nice starter car was to not have to repaint it (for the door handles and such).
Thinking of going with a dark midnight blue paint for the roof. Make is sorta two-tone.
I agree on the custom guage cluster, maybe a blacked out rear panel
However, this is NOT going to be a high-dollar build. I would love for the total to stay around $25k. We want the average joe to see what can be done. That means no billet, low bling. Just a clean nascar INSPIRED look to a fast car :)
We will see on the suspension. Not a ton of options out there, but there are some.

That is a very cool car Steve....Nice Choice...That body style will look great slammed on the ground. I also love the late 60's NASCAR theme, not the joke cars they run today, all you need to do is look at Jim Mulveys '66 Fairlane (ex Charley Libby car) to see how wicked they can look when done right...

Hey Steve
Didn't mean to blow the whole budget in one paragraph.
just a bunch of ideas, i agree that the paint looks not bad but if it was me i would do something with the bumpers. the handles not a big deal.
what about a silver roof hood and trunk???
what are you thinking for the interior ??? :willy:

Make rear look more like this with blackout.
Blackout hood treament,GT hood pins
Blackout front grill, remove inside headlites for ram-air
GT rear spoiler,Go-Wing type
I remember alot of those cars with rear window louvers that looked cool.

The window louvers came on the GT's. They also had hideaway headlights, which just made that body to me. One of my best buds in high school had one. It was the first cam, intake and carb swap I ever did. The car had a 302, two barrel. We put in a cam, swapped intake and carb. The car slowed down, got worse gas mileage and never ran right after that, but looked much better...lol
Ok, then we put on THRUSH mufflers...thats another story for another time.

I like the vinyl top but then again we usually do not agree anyway.
How about a F.A.S.T. style Touring ride. Instead of the same old bolt on catalog Queen how about taking whatever parts it has and modifying them? Ported cast iron intake and exhaust. Killer Rochester from Carb Shop or any of the others. Every intrernal part tweaked. Barry Rabotnick can get that thing moving.
Take that same approach to the suspension and brakes. A lot of old race tricks to make the optimum OEM style parts work. Heck there are so many guys with ideas have some sort of suspension design contest using mostly stock parts but altering geometry and better wearable components.
That is a cool car because of it's originality. Either go all the way or keep it stock appearing.

congratulations on coming over to the dark (blue) side.
Its hard to love vinyl tops, but it is hard not to love the magnum 500s.
good news: ford front suspensions are pretty much unchanged from the 1960 falcon - 1980 granada.
bad news: they're a little bit different, but all parts are made for mustangs.
here is a tase of what you're up against
http://www.cs.odu.edu/~mln/fairlane/fairlane-rack/
this installation is based on the instructions at this page:
http://www.totalcontrolproducts.com/index_fairlane.html
little know fact -- ford 385 series (i.e., "429-460") is about 80 lbs heavier than a ford FE (390-428).
but 385s are a bunch cheaper than FEs. but FEs are much better looking ;-)

Great Find Steve.
I think I would either upgrade to hideaway headlights or try to sink those headlights into the grill to make it have more of a flush look. That and the blacked out look someone had on the tailights would make the car.
Just my 2 cents
