View Full Version : Exhaust question to quiet down 3"

Hey guys,

Quick question: Currently have full 3" exhaust (ultimate headers, flex pipe, Borla XR1 mufflers) through a Roadstershop chassis, behind a 1K hp LS3. It's too loud.

I can drop the center section (v-band clamps) and easily replace it with either a resonator or another set of mufflers before it gets to the rear XR1's in front of the rear axle.

What would you recommend? I'm currently looking at a set of 3" atak mufflers with an offset pipe to make it easy or a set of 3" borla resonators. Anything else I should be looking at? Suggestions?

Thanks

I don't have a personal recommendation, but I see that RS uses resonators and mufflers on most of their builds.

Cats are an option, help with sound and exhaust/gas smells,

You’re likely not going to find a cat that will survive with that horsepower. Unsure if that’s changed in the last several years.

My car with similar horsepower runs vibrant resonators. Maybe they’ll help. Mine isn’t loud but setup is a bit diff with turbos as the “mufflers.”

Yea, I don't think Cats will survive. I'm also a bit limited in height too as the floor pan drops a little into the space. I right now the main pipes next to the J-pipes are about 1/4" off the floor pan and heat it up quite a bit. I have 4" of frame height, so anything like a 5" resonator is going to be the lowest point under the car and be an issue.

Borla makes a 4" resonator (400939) that says to quiet it down 2-3db. I may still be able to fit a J-pipe in the space too. Need to do some more measuring today.

I run the Vibrant Bottle Resonator, this one specifically: https://vibrantperformance.com/bottle-style-resonators-v1250/

It's 3in inlet/outlet, OD 4in, and 12in long. As said i have turbos to do the primary "muffling" but my car i feel is VERY tame sounding, and makes >1000rwhp.

I put a second set of 12" spintech spiral resonators
after my extreme mufflers on my GT-1 trans am car
Exhaust is 3" in this configuration... it can make a 105 db
at Laguna and 103 db day at Thunderhill... still pretty loud
My other exhaust is a 4 1/2" straight pipe.... not sure what
DB that hits but my Pantera with straight 3" is 109.7 at Laguna
Seems like anything with glass packing blows out after a while

Thanks guys,

I went with a set of Vibrant resonators, 18". Shipped this afternoon from Summit. Hopefully this will help.

Sorry, didn't see the HP rating, probably would burn the cats out,

resonators probably the best,

When is it too loud? Idle and cruising is okay? What about wide open throttle? Is it too loud or just obnoxious sounding?

Is this LS3 supercharged?

*** edit ***

Just looked at your build thread and saw the engine. Now I am really curious about the when it is too loud. I have a theory but I will wait for your response. I don't think the resonators are going to change much for you, though.

It's a little too loud at idle, WOT is very loud. The current XR1's are complete flow through. I haven't driven it yet so I'm not sure at cruising. I'm still working on brake bleeding and then interior.

Building a e90 lemons race car too at the moment, so it's going to slow down over the winter. Hopefully have it ready to drive in spring.
