View Full Version : 1978 Blazer

Starting a new project. The goal is a very reliable vehicle for Goodguys Hall of Fame Tour.
I found a nice 2wd Blazer with good patina and little to no rust. It looked like some one found it and threw a hillbilly slam job on it and some wheels.
My plan is to raise it a bit and install a 2018 Tahoe L83 (5.3L) and 6 speed in it. I found one on EBay with 3 miles on it from a train derailment.
I purchased the following off that totaled truck: engine, trans, ecm, wiring harness, radiator, fans, induction, fuel pump and controller, under hood fuse block, wiring harnesses, exhaust and evaporation system.
It should run like a 2018 Tahoe.

Sweet--you win the left-field weird award! I feel safe in saying that many here will be happy to see a build within the realm of the average guy looking for cheap crap on eBay, like the L83. There is a lot of interest in seeing how little friction you can get away with in using that engine. I do wonder how the dimensions and weight differ from the LS--the Blazer platform definitely makes the sizing restrictions less of a thing . . .

I used the Holley mid mount accessory drive that gave me a clean a/c mount and power steering pump.
If I would have pitched an aftermarket wiring harness this deal would have been fairly straight forward. Use all the GM stuff made it look cool be a bit more work to sort out the wiring.

The engine, trans and stock exhaust manifolds fit fine. I had to make custom engine mounts to position it where I wanted it. I think Holley sell mounts now. I just made my own because I knew it would fit.
The transmission mount was easy. I used the stock 78 Blazer transmission crossmember and mount and moved it back one set of holes. So far on the engine swap I had to drill two holes for the trans crossmember. The hot side of the exhaust the passenger side was stock and the drivers side needed reworked. I retained all the catalytic converters for cheap mufflers.
The Holley accessory drive fits great and solves the power steering pump issue that LT have.
The stock radiator went in very easy.
So far this has been one of the easiest projects I’ve ever done.
It’s been a lot of fun so far.

So far I’ve but 430 miles on the Blazer. The first tank full I averaged 17.6 MPG. Mainly city and goofing around. With a 31 gallon tank this thing should have over 500 mile range on the high way.
It no track car but it’s been a lot of fun so far!
For engine, trans, radiator, fans, fuel pumps, fuel pump controller and exhaust for under $6000 it is a bargain. The most expensive parts on it are the Holley Mid Mount Accy Drive. But that was worth it because it works and fits great.
My SWAG is the truck would run high 14 sec quarter mile time. Fast enough to get on the highway and pass.

Mark, do you happen to have a build list of all of the parts you used for the swap? Great build!
I used the following from a totaled 2018 Tahoe with 3 miles on it. Found it on EBay all the parts are like new.
Engine 5.3 L L 83
Transmission 6 speed
Engine harness
ECM
Radiator
Stock fans
Complete induction
Complete under hood fuse block and harnesses
Fuel pump and controller
Stock exhaust manifolds and Cats
For the accy drive I used a Holly Mid Mount set up. This fits great and gave me a power steering pump
Dakota Digital Gauges that work of the GM CAN data
Dorman 31 gallon fuel tank
Custom exhaust CAT back
Detroit Real Steel wheels
Michelin Tire
Ride Tech suspension parts.
Rear springs did not work I used the stock ones with Ride Tech hangers.
I made engine mount and moved the stock cross member.
We used HP tuners to turn off stuff in the EVM to make it work stand alone.
That pretty much it.
Runs and drives great.

Mark long shot but what are your thoughts on trying to make this all work in CA and Smog legal? My understanding is that you have to transfer the fuel tank and support EVAP from the original vehicle?

I’m no expert on CA emissions but if an E-Rod set is legal than this set up should be CA legal. Again I’m no expert.
It’s legal in MI... lol

Truck is running great. I have right at 1000 miles on it now. Driveline works flawlessly. I swapped the mufflers to get rid of a drone at 80 mph. We went though 3 mufflers until we have a system with no drone. Sound like a Denali now.
Still working on some 1978 Blazer issues like a noise from the A/C lines. I'll get it sorted out when I get some free time.
Love just banging around in it. I drove it to work this morning.

Mark, it was GREAT meeting you today. Thanks so much for taking time to go over the salsa red with me and introduce me to Cerakote!
Blazer looked amazing! Very cool build bud.
Thanks again!

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you use the E-rod motor, computer and required equipment that goes along with it.

Same junk yard place I got the engine and stuff from.
First thing is convert the front rotor to 5 on 5 bolt circle.

Next is to make a bracket to add caliper to spindle.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190805/cf6d91e09c204c0f82e02d41bd32d2b8.jpg
I had to make a template the convert that to a CAD drawing. Then a mock up part.

Nice upgrade! Did you get lucky with the rotor and caliper offset matching the original offset? Or was there some spacers/milling to make it work?

Stock spindle? I'm surprised those Detroit Steel wheels required so little balance weight.

No I had to use CCP spindles that have a nice boss to build a adaptor off of.

I have read mixed reviews on the CPP stuff in general, ie quality issues. Glad to hear a real world use ! It's really tough trying to sort through reviews and figure out whos giving honest opinions.

Honestly.... They (the peoples opinions of CPP) probably all are. CPP is hit & miss. Some stuff is good as is. Some stuff not so much. The follow-up when you (the little guy/John Q. Public) do have an issue leaves you wondering how they remain in business.

I added 2018 Tahoe brake booster and master. I cut the brake booster brackets off the 1978 Blazer booster. The amazing thing is the rivet pattern matched the 2018 Tahoe booster. I changed the angle and it bolted up. I had to rework the brake booster rods but over all fairly straight forward.

Curious.... Was this to simply keep the paired components together or is there some specific benefit to using the 2018 Tahoe booster vs. a 78 version?
Stielow

Brake pedal feel. By putting the booster and master together and coping the pedal ratio of the Tahoe the brake pedal feel should be the same as the Tahoe. The only wild card is how keeping the rear drum brakes will effect things. If it is not good I’ll add the dicks to the back.
The 1978 booster had very poor brake pedal feel.
I also wanted the look of the modern booster and master.
To further update the truck I also added the Detroit Speed wiper motor and windshield squirters.
Hope to drive it as soon as I put the seats back in it. They are out getting redone with Chevy Highland Plaid material.

Stock 12 bolt open diff. It is DEAD quite. I though about a post but it works great with no noise. I’m a little afraid to mess with it.
Again not a track car so on open is fine.

New seat covers going in today. This was on option on some GM products I think, called “Highland Plaid”. I’ll post some photos when we get it back together.

I just completed the Goodguys Hall of Fame Tour East. I traveled 2500 miles with no issues.
I made some upgrades prior to the trip. New plaid interior. New Detroit Speed intermittent wipers and washers.
The old truck ran with Lillard’s Riv on the twisty back roads with no issues other than sliding all over the seat.

What a killer build. Love it!

I did a CA legal swap on a 1993 RX7 with a 2002 Camaro donor back in 2005-2006 (before the E-Rods).
It was not that bad, all things considered. Only real PITA was the evap system for the fuel tank. I ended up fabricating an adapter to put the OEM Camaro fuel bucket into the RX7 tank.
It may take you a few trips to the BAR Referee to get every little detail ironed out; however, I'd not hesitate to give it a go seeing how well everything fits in the truck.
One wildcard - check to see if the donor is of the same category/class as the truck in the eyes of CARB. IIRC, you can't put a medium duty motor in a passenger vehicle and vice versa.
