Hello Everyone. I’m finally getting around to starting my build thread. I am enjoying the pleasure of making this 1961 Biscayne road worthy once again. A little back story… I have been around and wrenched on this car for almost 30 years now. I became friends with the owner when I was 17. I met him when I had questions about my 1963 Corvair w/400 SBC in the front. Anyhow, he had sold and bought back this car numerous times. Each time it went to different hot rodders who were friends of his. Each person made changes, upgrades, downgrades, whatever to it. I believe he owned it a total of five times since I have known him. It had combinations ranging from a 350 SBC w/671 blower, to 502 BB w/Procharger and 150 shot of nitrous. It was mostly a street/strip car that he took to car shows. The last owner who had it before he bought it back put a 454 w/671 blower in it. He became ill and was not able to complete the car. My buddy bought it back with intentions of retiring it from the racing scene and make a cruiser out of it. A year and half into it, he lost interest and that’s where I come in!

The car has a full cage in it now but will be modified to accommodate easier entry to the back seat for my kids. The setup it had when I acquired it was a bone stock 6.0 LQ4 with 4L60E. He purchased a Vintage Air AC kit, power steering setup, and a few other goodies for it. The power steering setup was installed and the AC kit is still in the box. Me being who I am, I could not have this beautiful machine running around with a stock motor in it.. especially after the history it has in my area.

Project updates will be added in upcoming posts. In the meantime, here are some pics…

The first pic is from 1997 when it had the 502 in it. It was a respectable land yacht that ran mid-6's in the 1/8th. I took this pic when he let me drive it for the weekend. The others are of when he got it back with the 454 in it and of the interior.

Goodies from CPP and Summit start to arrive…

CPP - Big brake upgrade and brake booster
SUMMIT - Stage 2 Pro LS Truck Cam Kit, Stainless fuel line, a few odds and ends, and a Holley Terminator X Max 4 months later.

First order of business, I wanted to rebuild the front end with new ball joints, tie rod ends, springs, and the brake upgrade.

I don’t know what springs were in it when I got it, but it looked like it was shooting for some good 60’s! Definitely had to fix that ASAP!

Thank you for the replies! I have more updates to post and I will soon. All the pics are on my phone, so I will get them downloaded from there.

In the meantime, I have ordered new wheels. I am going with 18" and 20" versions of the Boyd Coddington Junkyard Dog. Once I get those in, whenever that will be, I'll mount some tires and check ride height. I think the front end is still sitting a little high. We shall see.

If time permits, I am hoping to start mocking up the Vintage Air system to see how and where I can mount the Holley Terminator X Max and run all the wiring. I know I will be fabbing up a center console for it, so it will most likely be tucked away inside it. I do not have the means to smooth the firewall and make fancy, but I will clean it up as best I can. I was thinking about getting the Terminator X Firewall pass through from Sharpe Performance. Is anyone here using that? Thoughts? I would also like to use a bulkhead plate for the AC system rather than passing the hoses through the firewall. I think that would help clean up the firewall somewhat.

If anyone has any suggestions or tips, please feel free to share them. I would appreciate it.

While I had the oil pump off, I massaged the passages a little bit to improve flow and shimmed the spring. I figured since I improved flow and bumped up the pressure a little, I thought it would be a good idea to replace the barbell. I picked one up from SacCityCorvette.com.

I definitely love all the room in the engine compartment of these classics! I was able to reach all but the bottom two transmission bolts from the top! It’s great!

And…. Slowly getting the motor back together. I picked up a set of 243 heads and massaged them a little bit. They probably didn’t need it since I’m not racing anymore, but I enjoy doing the work and I’m sure it won’t hurt it. I upgraded the rocker arm trunnions and installed them along with new springs. I also had to order a set of 7.425 pushrods to get the right lifter preload. I topped it all off with an LS6 intake.

Found this spot on the radiator, so I’ll be taking by a shop sometime next week hopefully to get it checked and repaired if needed. Always something…

More to come as I get things completed.

I remember this car from years ago. It’s cool to see you making the changes you are.

The small Sharpe Performance firewall plug is very nice and perfect for the engine harness. I choose to run my trans harness through the trans tunnel as it layed out perfectly.

The guys at Street Machinery mounted there Terminator under the passenger seat for easy service and it well looks awesome. They also ran the harness through the firewall very low and it comes up to the motor for a very clean look on the firewall.

What every you do don’t follow them on Facebook as they will overwhelm you brain with really cool ideas.

Where have you seen it? It has been around for a while. It lived in NC for a bit, I believe.

I’m getting ready to start installing the Vintage Air and finding a good home for the Holley Terminator X Max.

First order of business will be getting the ginormous bench seat out. I will them pull out the carpet so I can put some sound deadening material in, and Yes, I will be cutting the drop bars on the cage. As you can see, they are a hinderance for getting in and out. I am not getting any younger and I would also like to make it easier for my kids to get into the back.

The NOS floormats are up for grabs. Who wants them? I do need a MAP sensor for and LS6 manifold. Just sayin’. :lmao: Shoot me a PM if anyone wants the mats.

I’m… I done did it. There’s no turning back now!

On a side note… the defroster vent is a total pain to cut out. Especially with the dash still in place. The instructions say to use a chisel or die grinder to cut the spot welds. Yeah… about that.

Thanks, Scott! I’m working on it. I’ll post an update in the next day or so. I started on the AC install and I’m not to fond of the plastic firewall plate that’s supplied with the kit.

Small update: I started working on mocking up the Vintage Air system. I can say that I definitely do not like the chincey plastic firewall cover that is supplied with the kit. I would like to replace that with metal and used bulkhead fittings. We shall see what I can come up with. Anyone have any ideas in the meantime?

As you all can see, the many years in Kindergarten almost paid off.

The airbox is mounted temporarily. I will layout everything for the Terminator X Max next and also determine how I want to run the AC and heater lines. And Yes, the wiring under the dash will be addressed too. I'm leaving it in place now for your viewing pleasure.

The floor pans are a hot mess. I'm going to get them cleaned up and install some sound deadener. Hopefully what I ordered will get here before the 4th of Neverary. Everything is either out of stock right when you hit the "PLACE ORDER" button or it is delayed with shipping. The deadener I ordered on the 20th is lost somewhere and they supposedly sent out a replacement order. We shall see.

On a side note, I did receive the wheels. Unfortunately, I had to send two back due to damage. Hopefully the replacements will be here soon. I'm going with 20X9 in the back and 18X8 in the front and looking at 285/35's rear and 245/40's for the front.

I also scored a set of Dakota Digital gauges from FB Marketplace. They were new in the box and I couldn't pass up the deal.

Pics of all coming soon!

I just reinstalled my vintage and I have one more line to make and I’m looking forward to that project being complete.

So which line / fittings are you using. There new lines/fittings are pretty cool as you don’t need the crimper.

To be honest, Marty... I am not sure yet. I have to unwrap the ones that came with the kit to see how they are. This kit came with the car and is about a year old.

Do you have any pics of yours?

@syborg tt - Looking at your thread, it appears I have the same lines as you. I did a mockup of the condenser/drier setup. I'm not liking how the drier is mounted on the condenser. I may use your idea and move it to the core support. My only issue would be making new lines.

I managed to finish removing the down braces for the roll cage. I will leave the rest of it and either repaint or get some sort of cover to “hide” the areas where I had to cut. These are rough cuts currently. I will remove whatever interior I can and tape up the rest so I can grind the rest down. At least now, it will be easier to get in and out of the front and my kids can actually sit in the back.

So much MORE room for activities!!!

The last of my wheels finally came in. I will be running polished Boyd Coddington Junkyard Dogs. 20X9 Rear and 18X8 Front. I did notice a few things after looking at these pics...

1- I need to sweep my porch
2- I definitely need to drop the front more
3- The center caps don’t match 🤦🏻

Seems like the way things are nowadays. Oh well. I’ll see if I can get a matching set. Wish me luck!

Until then, I’ll leave these here…

Nothing really to update as I haven't had much if any time to work on BISKWIK. I did get updates on shipping of a couple items though.

The 4-speed hump has been delayed yet again until sometime in July and the Lokar shifter is not shipping until August sometime. :headscratch:

It is an absolute shame that this has become "the norm" and most find it acceptable. Just plain sad.

Hopefully I'll have some updates with pics in the near future.

On a side note, I am thinking about picking these up for speakers to replace the vents. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Quick update….

Not much progress has been made on BISKWIK. My kids are out of school for the summer, so I spend my days off from the Fire Department with the family. I am contemplating working on it after they go to bed. We’ll see how that works out.

I got another update from Jeg’s that the Lokar shifter I ordered back in May was not going to ship until October now!!!! What?!?! I get on the phone with Customer Support and find out what shifters they have in stock. Low and behold they have one, ONE Lokar shifter that has a single bend for a 4L60E. It of course is a “Smart Shifter” which OF COURSE means it’s more expensive than the original shifter I ordered. After some more talking, I was very cordial btw, they were able to get the price of the replacement shifter within $45 of the original one. Talk about markup! I am very happy they worked with me and impressed with the customer service. Long story short, bought the shifter and BAM! It was on my doorstep in three days!!! I am hoping the length will be adequate for my setup.

I also ordered some sheet metal to patch up the holes in the floor pans from where I removed parts of the roll cage. I will update with more pics soon.

Hello Everyone! Not too much to update. I haven’t spent much time on it while my kids were out for the Summer. School is back in session, so I will be able to get some work days in here and there hopefully.

The only thing I’ve accomplished recently is starting on prepping the interior to weld in patch panels for where I removed parts of the roll cage. I will be working on that and the firewall panel before I move on to anything else.

I quickly learned I need to get a corded angle grinder. This little bit of work took four batteries using a sanding disc and a wire wheel brush. I’m hoping I can do it justice with the patches as I will be learning how to weld as I go. Yay! Go me!

The patches that are in the pics are from when the cage was installed. I have not mud-daubered any of my welding yet....

Good luck with the patches. Practice first. Clean the metal well before adding the new patches.

Ok… it has been a little bit since my last post. Not too much going on unfortunately. I have managed to get a 4-speed hump modified to work with my shifter so it will be offset in the center console and have also started on disassembling the dash to install the Dakota Digital gauges. The rat’s nest of wiring will be fun to tackle. The shifter is not mounted in the pic, btw.

I also figured out how to get the Vintage Air system moved inboard a bit to clear the firewall so I don’t have to use their chincy plastic cover plate.

Now, does anyone have any suggestions on what to use to cover the gaping hole? A smooth firewall would be great, but I’ll be real. That is beyond my skill level and wallet of course.

WSSix

You could just make a plate. There's been a number of build that have a plate covering the hole in the firewall. They also tend to run the hoses in and out through the plate.

Agreed. Make a plate and use grommets or a bulkhead to run your hoses though the firewall... or looks like that hole on the left side may already have enough room so as not to add more holes to the firewall.

I like the factory "heat only" plate idea too and then you could just use grommets.

Cramer4918

Thanks for the input! I have thought about the plate and bulkhead, but was concerned about routing the hoses under the dash. It is a bit cramped for where the exit through the firewall would be.

The “heater only” cover looks like a viable option as well.

I have thought about a plate and touting the lines through the kick panel vent then up through the round panel under the fender. For those that have done that, how do you block off the air coming in from the cowl? Does that make sense?

Some 'flat plate' covers look out of place vs the factory 'heat only' pieces. I like things when they look like they were made to be there.

Of course, completely reworking the firewall can create something better. But when you're picking & choosing your fab-list battles, the covers always win out for me to keep things moving along.

That's how we did mine in my Firebird actually... just made plates to block off the cowl but be sure you caulk them really good or you'll get water inside!

Hello Everyone! I’m finally getting a little bit of progress made. I was deployed for a couple weeks to Sanibel Island after Hurricane Ian but I am back now! I actually had a couple of solid days to work on BISKWIK. Exciting! I know!! :lmao:

Anywho… I managed to get the LOKAR shifter mounted and access hole drilled for the shift cable. Unfortunately since the cable runs out the back of the shifter in this model, I have to raise the bench seat about an inch to clear the bracket and cable. Not a big deal, but still something else that is getting added to the ever expanding To-do list. I’ll get pics of that fiasco soon.

I started working on getting the Dakota Digital gauges installed. The dash had been worked over before to fit the smaller AutoMeter gauges, so I had to take my trusty half round file to the openings to enlarge them for the round Dakota gauges. That was super fun. It took a little bit, but I got it done.

I started to try and make heads or tails of the wiring debacle while planning on placement of the Dakota Dash module and the Holley Terminator X Max ECU. While doing some research on Google University to figure how to wire up the Dakota gauges, I learned I need to get a bridge module from Dakota for the gauges to get signal from the Holley ECU. 🤦🏻
That will be on order ASAP.

While I was under the dash looking at the wiring with all the daylight coming in from the gaping hole in the firewall, I decided to tackle that project. My kindergarten skills paid off once again as I was able to use a Sharpie, measuring tape, and some scissors to make a high tech template out of a cardboard insert which was in a box for something my wife bought…. Not car parts of course.

I made up my template and transferred it to some sheet metal I sourced from eBay. I used a paint can to draw radius the corners. I was able to get it cut out pretty straight with my angle grinder. I don’t have a good work area or a lot of proper equipment yet, so a piece of 4X4 post and a size 11 held the metal in place while I cut it. It did the job.

I plan on cutting the heads of some 5/16 bolts and tacking them onto the plate. That way I can install it and provide mounting points for the Vintage Air setup. It will definitely look better than the chincy plastic piece that was provided with the kit.

I had looked at the Heat only cover and really like it. However, I have to pick and choose how to allocate funds and since that was more “want” than “need” I decided to make a panel. I’ll decide if I will color match it or paint it black like the heat only cover. We shall see. Still deciding on how/where I will run the A/C and heater hoses. I will have a better idea once I have the VA unit in place with a solid mounting setup to see how much room I’ll have.

Hello everyone! I would like an opinion. I am thinking of mounting my electronics under the dash as pictured. I was planning on having the Holley ECU project out the opening as pictured for all the hook ups. When I make my center console, I was thinking of having a small window so that the LED’s could be seen to make sure all is working correctly. Above the Holley ECU, I would have the Dakota Gauge module along with the Dalit Bridge Module. The wiring and cable can be run up and over the mounting plate and then behind it.

What do you think? Just not a lot of room with the VA unit in the passenger side.

Cramer4918
11-20-2022, 12:45 PM
Hello Everyone. I have another “need your opinion” post. I’m trying to figure out how I am going to run the exhaust. The car has been underbraced when it had the cage installed. I do like the fact that the X-frame is beefed up a little. The issue is that the tubing interferes with where the exhaust should run. I do not want to run it under the bracing as that would kill the ground clearance. I had thought of getting some 3.5” square tubing and welding it between the bracing and the frame to make a channel for the exhaust.

Don’t mind the battery cable in the pics. I haven’t started the electrical fiasco yet.

Is there anyone that has any experience in this area or could just give me some insight? I do appreciate any and all info and advice.

Not very familiar with the frame layout on a Biscayne but what about cutting out a section of the brace where you want the exhaust to go and replacing it with a section that has a pass-thru for the exhaust tubing. Might get to have your cake and eat it, too.

That’s kind of what I was thinking of doing. I was just seeing if anyone that had any experience in framework could chime in with thoughts. Unfortunately I know it will probably look like an after thought, which technically it is. 🤦🏻*♂️
I just want to make sure that making the changes will keep the rigidity of the underbracing.

Question… Does anyone have two of these laying around they don’t need? They are fittings for the heater on the Vintage Air unit. I have straights now and need the 45’s. Unfortunately, they are on back order until after Christmas. 🤦🏻*♂️

Not too much to update. I did manage to fab up the electronics mount and received some goodies in the mail.

I took some planning cues from Marty (syborg tt) and picked up some Mag Daddy mounts and Velcro straps. I didn’t have time to save up the twist ties. :lolhit:

I appreciate that, Marty! They actually arrived earlier this week, surprisingly.

I’ve been tackling the wiring here and there when I get the opportunity. I may have to start working on it at night when everyone is in bed.

I’ll post some updates soon. Thanks again!

Thank you for looking, Marty. I did receive the fittings and will be moving on to completing the A/C setup once I finish the main wiring.

I have the panel made up and am in the process of mocking up the layout of the electronics and the wiring. Once I get it how I like it, I'll take it apart and fine tune the panel and paint it.

Not much of an update. We went on vacation early February and I got pretty sick upon return to the tune of 103 fevers with meds and a total weight loss of 19 lbs in a week and a half. I was in bed for three days and wasn’t able to eat. We are guessing it was a strain of some type of Flurona. 🤷🏻*♂️ A month later and I’m up four lbs and my stamina definitely isn’t what it used to be. I’ll get back to where I was, mainly because I’m stubborn.

I did get a new radiator/ fan setup for BISKWIK though. I’ll be working on getting that mocked up with the MSD Solid State relay. More pics to come!!!

I did manage to get the fans mounted and the setup temporarily in place. I wanted to make sure there was plenty of clearance with the steering box and the accessory drive. All looks good so far! I just have to massage a couple holes on the fan shroud to get them to line up properly.

Cramer4918
03-28-2023, 07:06 PM
I was also able to make some progress on making panels to fill in the holes between the back seat and the trunk. I did not seal it off completely, but it is a vast improvement over what it was. The wheel wells have a healthy layer of undercoating in them, so I did not add any material to the interior.

Cramer4918
03-28-2023, 07:10 PM
Once I completed that task, I employed the help of my Mini-Me and installed the seatbelts in the back. Once we got those bolted in, the backseat was put back in place. It’s a little dirty and will be cleaned, but it’s starting to look like a car inside again!!!!!

Cramer4918
03-28-2023, 07:12 PM
The seat cushion got tweaked a little over the jump area while putting it back in. I will be pulling it back out to address that and make it uniform again.

Finishing the wiring and fuel system will be next…. Hopefully.

Stay tuned!!🤙🏼

Hello Everyone! Well, the cowl hood is no more. I ended up trading it for a steel hood. I really like the lines of the ‘61 hood, more than I like a cowl hood apparently. It is not perfect, but it is factory steel and I’m good with that. Pics are from the person I traded with. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230501/cb25c814b8c6d68d10c4df449fe4d607.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230501/9de312b42f07f2a6110ced3108d9d33c.jpg

Now that I have the hood, I need to do a little work to it. It does have a bad spot on the underbracing that I would like to repair. I do not have access to a bead roller nor do I know anyone around here. Do any of you all know anyone I could get a small patch piece from that would replace this section?

I am also working on modifying a brake booster bracket to work for power brakes. I did not take pics of the interference, but let’s just say it was sitting in #7 coil.
I managed to butcher the bracket and modify the mount orientation to gain clearance.

This is the original bracket
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230501/f46c9ad9c884b12dca85d48da775681c.jpg

This is what I was able to do. Forgive my skills, I am teaching myself how to weld with this build and I don’t have a bunch of fancy tools. Just getting things done!

The bracket modification gained about 1 1/2” more clearance outward.

I did not feel like dealing with dripping brake fluid, so I just bent the master cylinder out of the way. I am making new brake lines anyway.

This is my next hurdle to clear…

That was my mistake. I posted before finishing my statement.

I need to work on the clearances for the mounting bolt and brake booster pushrod. The linkage will need to share the same general area and I need to figure out the geometry of how I can get everything to work cohesively.

Man! It has been a minute since I’ve updated. I do apologize for that. The kids got out from school and I haven’t worked on it since they’ve been out until today. I got a little bit accomplished.

I put some heat shield on the starter wires that run by the manifold.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230729/2a093e8c75c56e8d194fe7581d016cea.jpg

As you can see, I have the passenger manifold installed finally along with the oil dipstick, installed the plugs and checked the fit of the plug wires. These will do for now, but I my go with a ceramic boot in the future.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230729/5ed5185ca94038cd043af80e33cfab97.jpg

I did not like how I had the Terminator Max harness ran into the engine compartment, so I purchased the billet bulkhead from Sharpe Performance. It s a really nice piece and install was fairly simple.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230729/911b93046bb7055104b155ee900686e1.jpg

I picked up a couple more coils that I was lacking and installed them. There is plenty of clearance on the driver’s side for the plug wire boots. I also ran my charge cable from the alternator. I just need to wire it up next.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230729/a35a88c66a19da179acc5cf0e1c0c9e4.jpg

I also managed to get a little more of the sound deadener installed. I will be tidying up the wiring shortly and installing the gauge cluster.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230729/2486540261aa8be757256959b9b0ae4c.jpg

The Vintage Air unit will be installed but not wired up. The harness for the controls is for an AC equipped car. Mine did not have AC originally, so I will need to purchase the correct harness and controls. That will be put on the back burner as I need to allocate funds to getting BISKWIK running. Hopefully I’ll be able to fire it up soon!

I’ll try to get more work done soon and update everyone when I can.

Started with all this room!!!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230927/29c7385ada4a4864b51784e0eaebba34.jpg
Local hardware store only had 1/8” flat bar and since I have zero patience, I purchased it.

Well… I made a little more progress.

I probably did not need to weld the spacer plates together, but I figured I could definitely use some more practice with welding. I know it’s not pretty, but I am still learning. I am using a flux core welder, so there is a copious amount of slag and spatter.

I know you all are jealous of my high tech, high dollar welding table. When I am not needing it for welding, it doubles as a short step stool.

Anyhow, this is what I am going to be repairing..

I also went ahead and made a new ground for the battery. The previous ground was bolted to the frame in the rear. I cleaned up an area on the frame and welded a bolt directly to it. Once it was cleaned up and cooled, I taped the threads off and sprayed undercoating on the bare metal. I installed the new cable from BatterycablesUSA and I won’t have to worry about a dirty ground anymore.

Here’s a funny for you all….

I picked up a Neutral safety switch for the 4L60E and I decided to try to figure out the outputs for Reverse Lights. I spent about 45 minutes under the car with the switch installed, looking at a schematic and using a volt meter to determine what wires I need to use. I got that completed and wanted to see what color wires the reverse lights used. This is the “funny” part….. my car does not have any!!! :lolhit:

Nope. I did not know that. Something else to add to the list now.

I think one of the next big ventures is going to be the exhaust. As my insomnia was in full force last night, I pondered over how I was going to run it with the frame bracing. I came to the decision of cutting the frame bracing out completely, running the exhaust and then reinstalling the bracing with channels for the exhaust to run through.

It sounds good in theory. I'll have to see if it comes to fruition.

Hope all is well for you, brother. Get up with me sometime when you're not too busy.

Yup…. I was left alone and unsupervised again! [emoji51]

I went ahead and started removing the underbracing so the exhaust could be ran. I have a plan to plumb the exhaust and then add in the underbracing with channels for the exhaust. We shall see how it turns out. I may have to completely scrap the bracing, but I’m hoping not.

Left alone and with power tools. Here goes nothing!

Hi Matt,

You're welcome and I have learned so much from this board that I feel the need to share what I learned and the mistakes I make.

Just one more update for now.

I learned from Marty to put the tape back from the fitting so I would not have to worry about digging it out after crimping. Thank you, sir!

I used a section of the straight pipe to line up on the bottom of the frame to check my ground clearance.

Plenty of clearance for the tire.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231105/eb7828af705763977f115e37068af0b3.jpg

I used the boxes to assure there was plenty of clearance for the exhaust since they are right at the height of the bottom of the frame.

I bought some stainless wire for my welder and was able to get the pieces tacked together. I know it’s not pretty, but I’m working with minimal tools.

My plan is to make the exhaust in three sections. I will use stainless clamps to join the sections together so that I can remove them if needed. I am going to take the sections to get TIG’d together.

I know the tacks are bigger than needed. I’m still learning to weld properly. The guy that is going to TIG the pieces together said he can work with them. I am hoping to be able to watch him and I will possibly grind some of the tacks down as he gets some solid welds in.

In the middle of getting the exhaust mocked up, my new to me injectors arrived. I did some research on the ones that were installed and found out they were only 24# injectors. They may have worked for my application, but they would have been maxed out in duty cycle according to the flow calculator I used. The new injectors are 50# GM injectors. These will be more than adequate for my setup.

The injectors that were installed when I got BISKWIK.

The journey for cutting the tubing was painful in the beginning. Making clean cuts on the pipe was challenging with a 6” angle grinder. Not to mention, getting the tubing cut square on the bends. Initially I wrapped painters tape around the tubing and marked them that way. Most of the time I would end up making adjustments to my cuts to get the ends to mate up properly. That was time consuming to the say the least. I then discovered the technique of using a zip tie cinched down around the tubing. You could move it however you needed along the elbow and mark it. That allowed me to get the my cuts marked perfect every time!

I used the ziptie trick with the headers and exhaust on the TA. Worked great as you've seen. Your exhaust looks great.

Side note, I had no idea Flowmaster made a straight through style muffler like Magnaflow until I was hunting for exhaust for my C10. I wanted low buck because I'm cheap. I love Magnaflow but found the Flow FX mufflers for half as much. Hopefully, I like the sound.

Keep up the great work.

Unfortunately, the flat bar I purchased was zinc coated, so I could not tack it to the exhaust with my setup. [emoji2959]

Prior to realizing that, I made up a hanger. I made up a jig to bend the bar to curve round the pipe. I heated the bar up and then used a hammer to form it. I guess one of my next purchases will be a vise.

It's hard to tell from the images.... What material is the tubing you used?

*EDIT*
Found my answer in post #111. I think you'll want to make sure the 'hangers' used allow for some fore/aft shift as SS likes to 'grow' when it gets hot. Certain sections will see higher heat vs others so allowing movement seems to keep things happy. Just my experience/s w/the material.

I've only built a few complete exhaust systems from scratch like you did so I'm still definitely a novice at it, but I think it's a lot of fun figuring out! Also was hoping you would decide to run it all the way out the back....having ridden in several side exhaust cars, it sounds odd to my ears only hearing part of the 8 cyls. You will be happy having the sound and fumes at the very back of the car!

I did not think about that. I appreciate the info. I will look into using a more traditional/OEM style hanger. The biggest issue I am running into is the clearance. I have tucked the exhaust up tighter than factory, so space is limited.

Thank you for the compliment!

Are you referring to a lap joint similar to below pic?

If so, it is because the Builder’s kit I purchased did not have that option and the closest exhaust shop is an hour and a half away. That’s why I used the butt joint clamps.

I didn’t go with one since the majority of the systems I looked at did not have them. I figured between the fact the motor torques sideways and the length will be adequate enough to absorb the movement.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong pls.

The more rigid the set-up, the higher the need for a flex-joint within the exhust tubing.

The 'flex' sleeves are typically needed where exhaust routing is very tight for spacing. Set-ups like this are utilizing mounting bushings (those metal tabs/hangers w/the blue bushings) that minimize movement. That 'almost fixed' mounting keeps things from moving so the movement @ the motor has to be absorbed somewhere within the exhaust system or there will most likely be a failure/crack somewhere @ a joint on the tubing.

Exhaust set-ups that have more flexible mounting/hangers & more space (the old school rubber straps or bushings used in a floating arrangement) don't necessarily need the ability to flex within the actual exhaust tubing because the system has room to expand/contract/shift w/less bind.

Cramer4918
01-23-2024, 03:31 PM
I understand and agree. I am planning on using the oem style hangers after what ScotI and WSSix stated earlier to accommodate for expansion and flexion. I believe I left enough room where it's needed, but we shall see.

If not, I'll have to regroup and may have to add a flex joint.

Future plans will be to reinforce this ‘62 frame hiding in the back forty to eliminate a lot of the flex. I am considering the current frame under the car as the “mock up” frame.

The cooler did turn out well. Good choice with the bulkhead fittings. It is very clean looking.

Thank you, Trey and Scott! I hope it will help get some longevity out of the 4L60E.

For my next trick, I wanted to mount the Vintage Air controller. I was trying to decide on mounting it on the “not there yet” center console.

Or dare I cut a hole in the dash and put it here.

A Command Decision was made and I decided the dash was going to make a nice home for it. Wish me luck!

Not too shabby if you ask me.

I got the controller wired up and the trinary switch sorted out so it would play nice with the Holley system.

IT WORKS!!!!

I don’t know about you all, but I’m not a fan of the vents that come with the Vintage Air kit. They just look too much like an afterthought.

So, I purchased some vents for a Camaro and commenced to mock them up for the dash.

I did not get a before pic of how the bezel sat against the dash, but let’s just say it took some massaging to get the contour right. I’ll try to remember to get one before I get the driver’s side done.

Finished product….

Big question now is do I paint the bezel to match the dash and leave the vent chrome or do I leave it all chrome. Thoughts? :headscratch:

If the paint match is on point, paint the housings if you feel the 'all chrome' housing is too much.

But if the color is even slightly off, it would be an eyesore & bug the sh!t out of many/most.

Looks good/decent in the posted image.

Agreed. I like your idea of painting the housing if you can do it correctly. It looks nice all chrome. Mismatching the paint will look worse.
