View Full Version : LT5 discontinued!?

Apologize if this has been spoken about already. I went to look at GM performance crate engines and it’s listing the LT5 as discontinued now. This is the engine I planned on purchasing for my car in the next year or two so this is pretty sad news for me. Has anyone heard of this or why it is happening? The LT4 seems to be staying in production.
Part of me wants to just pull the trigger on it and keep it in a box for a while. The other part is thinking that they may be about to release something even more powerful, but I am doubting this as the nee platform is mid engine and probably doesn’t need the same power house as C7.

GM built out the LT5. Now the LT5 is no longer in production GM does not plan to build any more.
So GM is sold out of LT5 and LS7s

It'll be interesting to see how many more crates will disappear with the new electric revolution fad.

Makes sense if it's not going to be used in the future. I'm surprised the LT5 wasn't planned to be a future powerplant for the C8. Guess there's something else in the works to up the power for it in the future, will be interesting to see where it goes and what trickles down (if anything) for crate options

Ls7 disappeared and was replaced with an engine with more power , lt5 is all but guaranteed to be replaced with more power , follow c8 new and rumors new DOHC v8 twin turbo ?

The c8 trans delay etc resulted in the c7 zr1 & lt5 being built as a one year model to placate the hot rod masses while the c8 issues were being fixed.
I believe the l83, lt4 & 5 represent the last in line for now of semi tune able gm engines as the newer upgraded gen motors are locked down encrypted due to liability/reliability management.
Until the aftermarket cracks the new gen code if ever, we for now may have reached peak engine tune.
So here’s investing 102 advice (rip weld) stock up on lt5 front accessory drives 😀

I was going to wait to buy an LS7 for my next build, but.... with this happening I decided to pull the trigger now. Figure it can sit in the corner for a bit till it’s needed.

Anyone know the life expectancy of the LT4? Should I get mine now?

Holleys latest EFI setup includes DI tune ability. This is why we are seeing the GenV engines gain traction now in swaps. Holley is really making a name for itself in electronics lately. Lots of guys making the switch.

LT4 is used in in the current model Camaro ZL1 and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, so I'd expect it to continue to be available for a few years yet. But I have no inside info :)

Well, there's one less LT5 available as of yesterday morning. Now I need to figure out the difference between the 19418270 and the 19370666 controller kits - both for manual transmission. Looks like nobody has the 19418270 until July (probably the global chip shortage) but I can get the 19370666 now. Anyone know the difference?

I'm sure you spotted the rebate but..... $250 is $250.

Looks like the LS7 will be replaced with this wet sump version that makes more HP & Torque.

I'm under the impression that's what was used in the newer Z28 Camaro.

Honest question here guys...for a street car with an owner that prioritizes torque but may not want the added packaging complication of an LSA, is that thing worth the $4,500 upgrade over the Ls3? I’m struggling with that decision...

https://www.chevrolet.com/performance-parts/crate-engines/supercharged-lt5I saw that, nice rebate for a T56 after buying the LT5 crate but right now, unless I can get a GM Performance Dealer interested in price matching, I can get T56 more than $250 lower from other vendors. I was going to get the cruise and connect to get the rebate but same thing, I can do better and pick the parts I want from other vendors.
I don't think there's any rebate for just buying the LT5 is there?

I had to go back and look. Appears I was looking at the connect and cruise, missing that detail. Sorry about that. But... I agree on sourcing exactly what you want from other vendors.

It's always a balance. There's a lot you can do to an LS3 to gain a bit more Tq. Talk to and engine builder or tuner and see what their thoughts are. Mike Norris Motorsports is who I'd suggest. They do a lot of upgrades and tuning. Mikes a good guy and has been at this a long time.

That’s a good call. Sorry for the hijack...that was a bad one :)
Connect and cruise never seems like the value play, always the convenience play for dummies like me.

Just saw this myself.
Now I have to change plans as I see Summit has 6 of them and Jegs has 1.
Is the LT5 worth the few grand over the LT4?
Or should I go with the LT4 and upgraded it down the road?
This is going into a 55 chevy with a T56 in case anyone was wondering

Me personally i'd say it's worth it over a LT4. Blower alone makes that difference to me.

Thanks for the answers.
Still debating. Just something cool about seeing an LT5 under the hood. But I also have visions of a turbo LS (until getting stuck in shop hell with my motor).

Jegs and Summit show no inventory, but available from the supplier in October, seems odd for something discontinued. They went from 2 to zero quick.
