Can someone explain MAF sensor placement to me? I have a GM crate motor LS3 in my 68 Camaro that I am looking to get a wiring kit for. I also am going to use one of franks LS air intake kits. Do I need the MAF in the air intake tube? I see some builds with it there and others not. Any guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks

It should be roughly centered in a long section of straight intake tube for best results. You don’t want it in turbulent flow.

The GMPP installation guide has a good explanation of how the blade style MAF needs to be installed:

If you were to go with a Holley EFI system, like the Terminator X Max, then a MAF is not needed.

This is the correct info. Frank placed the MAF in the center of the intake tube he made for me and I haven’t had any issues. Wiring leaves a bit to be desired, but it’s the only option. That setup from Frank is $$$$.

And to add to this, you can also run the GM stuff without the MAF. It will automatically go into SD (speed density) mode when MAF is unplugged. Any good tuner can make the setup work properly. Really boils down to preference. I prefer the SD tuning myself, but I don’t drive mine across the country where multiple weather and elevation changes would work better with a MAF setup. Both style setups have their pros and cons.
