Dot 5.1

Looking at the pros and cons, I quickly eliminated Dot 5 .
THe proice of 5.1 is basically the same as DOT 3/4 with higher biouling point (270 degrees).

So given a bran new brake system with OEM (Detroit speed master) and OEM KORE3 C6 Brake calipers.. I was leaning toward DOT 5.1

Any downside to this decision?
Can it be used for clutch fluid ?

Unless you are. Easy racing your car your brake fluid temp will be fine with dot 3 or 4. Remember the rest of your brake system has to withstand those temps. I doubt you will run your car to the extreme and have on racing brake pads. I went with dot 5 which is different than dot 5.1 in the beginning. I’m not running dot 3 or 4. Reg cheap stuff

Everything here in the shop gets DOT 4. The cost difference between 3 and 4 is negligible.

Anything that will see track time gets 5.1 It's cheap insurance. You do not need race pads to boil brake fluid.

I've had great luck with Redline RL600 DOT 4, it has a 600F boiling temp.



If Redline made a 5.1 I might switch to that.

Used to run dot 5.1 in my motorcycles all the time
Switched to a dot 5 high temp in my pantera and it was swelling my
Seals. Found out after it locked up my brakes the second time

Now using Dot 4 Fliud per the brake master cylinder rebuilder

Make sure your seals can take 5 or 5.1 fluid
