There has got to be a better option for the mirror gasket. I'm putting 2nd gen mirrors on a 1st gen and they seem to actually fit better without the gasket. But also, the gaskets I have are hard as rocks.. should they be more pliable? Is there something better?

I had the exact same problem on my 68 Camaro.
I do not know the best solution but here's what worked really well for me.
Get online to mcmastercarr and order a small sheet of VITON.
They offer multiple thicknesses and durometer (softness) ratings.
VITON is a wonderful material that will stay pliable, last longer than any other rubber commonly available and be easily trimmed with an exacto knife or cut with scissors. And yes, it's black in color.
It's also chemically compatible with anything your car would experience (unless you drive through foric acid, lol)
Hope this helps!
