Goal: To create an American Supercar. I believe the term "Supercar" is relative. I believe a "Supercar" is a vehicle that is an over achiever. Something that is spectacular on a road course going through turns, yet is very fast and thrilling in a straight line, but could also be driven on the streets. To me, one of the things that really puts a car in the super car category is very phenomenal engineering feats such as balance, huge cooling ducts, aerodynamics, big oil coolers, etc. And lastly, something "luxury". I think the "luxury" ties it all together. Not to get confused with comfortable, as a 10 hour trip in an Aventador really isn't too pleasant, but its "nice". Leather/suede interior, nicely designed dash/controls. I want this thing to laugh at modern cars such as C7Z06s, Viper ACR, Porsche GT3s, and put an Aventador, or maybe even a Koenigsegg up for its money. Am a crazy? Probably. But lets give it a shot.

The Shop:

The shop doing the work is Fast Lane Performance located in Atlanta Georgia. Super nice shop with great group of talented guys! From tube chassis, cages, to performance work for new and old American muscle cars. (Camshafts, Superchargers, Etc)

Quick Run down

Chassis: We are going with a full tube chassis. It's going to be rigid, but hopefully still pretty light when finished.

Suspension: Cantilever Front and Rear suspension.

Engine: LSX Based Twin Turbo

Transmission: Thinking of the GM 10 Speed. Something different. Which says alot because I am a huge Manual guy. I've never owned an Automatic before.

Body: 1975 Camaro. Why 1975? Because I have never seen a super cool 74-77 Pro touring camaro for obvious reasons. We will be doing a 1970 split bumper conversion though.

Quick CAD Models to just give an idea.

Phase 1 - Tear Down of Camaro

The car was found for sale at a Storage Unit. The body was straight, so it made a decent candidate, considering we only needed a shell. We started stripping away everything we don't need.

Phase 2 : Chassis Design

We wanted something strong and somewhat light.

Lets keep it going! A few tubes are "placeholders" until we test fit the body onto the chassis.

Engine Placement and Wheel Base time! Bring out the chalk and plum bobs.

The engine is offset a tad for driver weight and steering wheel/shaft, etc. Furthermore it is set back quite a bit. The entire engine is behind the center line for the front wheels. This give us some room for an epic twin turbo system and more importantly keeping that weight to the middle of the car!

Very cool, I would love to see a high tech one off build. My question is what is the reason for cantilever suspension? Is there not room for the shocks?

Thanks! Honestly I was always fascinated about cantilever suspension. I think its pretty cool design! It tucks more of the weight inboard and can be more adjustable. The coil overs will be easier to get too, plus changing the cantilever ratio's.

Really cool! Do you have a target weight for the completed car?

Thanks! I don't have a weight in mind. I would love for it to be under 3,000lbs, but there will be some heavy items such as twin turbo system, coolers, full interior, big brakes, wide wheels, etc. I did a rough estimate and I calculated the weight of the chassis was around 350-400lbs, not including the engine block the way it sits. But I have to run numbers again to see if that's accurate.

Fun build for sure! Welcome to the site. Keep us updated. Hope to see it out at Caffeine and Octane when it's done.

Looks killer. And you're right, I don't remember seeing a badd azz 74-77 Camaro anywhere!

I have used that style of dash bar before, but when researching most of the rules out there (NASA SCCA CASCAR and others) none of them allowed that in their rules. They never said it was bad, they just never said it was good. It seems to be more common in the drag racing style of chassis.
Looks like a good build coming up. I am about a year and a 1/2 into my build and wanted to make sure that I wouldn't run out of posts for a while. Are you further along than you are letting on maybe?

Good eye! It is very common in the drag world, however the dash bar is a "place holder" untill the body goes back on the car for test fit, then we will create the actual dash bar and A Pillars. We have made a little progress since the last posted picture, since the shop has moved locations, and there was a lot of new construction done. They are now setting up the Fab area in the new shop, so we will be moving full speed soon. Only thing done lately is Just mocking up the A arm lengths/ track width. But nothing substantial. When real updates are made, I will definitely be posting!

Here are some shots of the new facilities Late model Performance side. The offices, show room, and conference room was newly constructed. The building was an old Pepsi Storage building with nothing inside before. I will post the fab side of the shop once that side is completed.

Fab side to the shop isn't complete, but it is back up and running! At the moment we are going to focus on the front suspension, then move to the rear suspension. We have the front suspension designed and CAD, but I'm sure the final design will change when actually building it.

Track width. I want this thing wide. Alot of high end sports cars/super cars seem to have a track width of 60-70inches. For example the viper ACR comes in at a 62.9", while the corvette zo6 comes in a tad over 63". Aventador is 67". Koenigsegg is 66.9 Keep in mind track width is center of tire, to center of tire. So that gives an additional 5-6" of "meat" per side to add to get a complete width. We are going to be around 78-80" in complete width. From my understanding is just wider than an Aventador.

Here is a quick mockup. The passenger side is a 345. The driver side is a 275. I Would love to run atleast a 315 up front and a 345 in the rear. But would really love to run a 345 on all fours. It may not be ideal, but I'd like to play around with the 345 on all fours to see if it can be dialed in. After all, the car is being made from scratch right. lol. Once we nail down the track width, we will start fabbing the A arms and cantilever suspension.

I have designed my car to take a 325 on all 4 corners with room to increase the rear sizing. Probably wont run that big of a front but it would look good at shows. LOLhttps://lateral-g.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=70932&stc=1&d=1576208759

So finally got settled in the new shop, then the pandemic hit, slowing down progress on personal builds, since the shop got really busy. We have cleared out most of the cars, and now I have time again to do my stuff!

I am going full speed on it now. My goal is to have it as a full roller by New Years, and into SEMA 2022. I hope to compete with the “big dogs” in battle of the builders.

I placed the body on the chassis, and everything lines up perfectly! Next step is to add a few more bars to strengthen up the chassis, then remove body and final weld. After that, then it’s the cool cantilever suspension!
