Power steering cooler help

I bought a Derale cooler for my PS and I've now decide to add a filter.


Whats better a micron filter or a paper element?

Earls has this.....

And XRP has a similar one with a paper type filter.

Also, on the pluming aspect for the cooler/filter, should I come from the rack into the cooler or vise versa then into the pump? And where should the filter be before or after the cooler?

The filter and cooler are plumbed on the return side of the pump, so really all you can protect with the filter is the pump. If the pump fails or is making trash, it's going into the rack/box at pressure!
That being said, I'd want the filter on the rack/box return, but before the cooler. That will keep any debris from plugging up the cooler.
Some pumps have a screen on the return inlet, so that can tell you if anything made it through the filter and compromised the cooler.

Always come from the rack or box to the filter, then to cooler and back to reservoir. The filter needs to be in the low pressure side of the system. This routing keeps the cooler free of debris and if you ever fail a pump or rack, the cooler should remain protected by the filter.
