Well... With the 55 in for paint the wife talked me into pulling out the 68 Camaro and make a family project out of it and get it running. So my oldest and I picked it up and brought it home. She ain't the purdiest thang, but she is solid. All original paint, minus the addition of the SS hood and smooth deck lid (which are both orig in their own right) which my buddy, who I bought it from, put on. He also had some rust repairs done around the back window, hence the primer. First time she has seen daylight in 9 years since I bought it on 2009. It has been off the road since 1984. This part of the project will be to simply get it running and driving. A few years ago our resident Curtis Osgood, aka Spiffav8, parted out his 67 Camaro as he was going full pro touring treatment. So I bought everything from bumper to bumper underneath which consisted of worked over 454 LS-6 (Old school) 5 speed TKO, 3.42 12 bolt posi, full hotchkis suspension including springs, shocks and sway bars, Lee steering box, disc brakes, etc... All of which ran exceptional in his car. The plan is to swap all of that into this. Interior is actually really nice. All factory deluxe and will just need a good cleaning for now. Looking forward to working on this together. Teach the kids the ins and outs of cars. Once the 55 is done the plan will be to go completely through it and make it a real nice car. In the meantime though we're gonna have some fun with it and make some memories!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/7e01ae192ec4ce420463583ba7f57cf7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/d31821e6d8fa3f1af3531bdd4709eb3d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/9b40be90bb8768fa735c08a6dd7756de.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/a3fc1da931b814c9f258e1e31df4a844.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/20fb605929a14296e5b38c3444f46b97.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/dd192b61f8dc8d790339e967eb807ab5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/6260712c10930987f5bfe3510a6a8519.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/9da0fbf22a6705c24ebb0a1e8ebccbd8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/bcf763507c070502b617200573afea18.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/31bd407f8cd2798a06df006fd39d9850.jpg

Well... James and I have been spending the past few nights working on the Camaro. I honestly don't know who is having more fun..... Just having such a good time working side by side with this kid. We have a great game plan and so far been executing it as planned. So far we've ripped out the old exhaust and the fuel tank.. Tonight we wrapped up tearing the front end down... Will be ripping the old frame, motor and trans out this weekend... And with a little luck be sliding the new (old) one under it very soon..... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/921371b51e3d5ea1dc362635e5edab9c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/be325a5c6900a307fb3c8452215c6408.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/f089b6665fe29d898ccdb0645e4df5da.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/3c842f0aaff557bcc59bf4a34bf57d31.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/ce1b25b5f6d8d670283180c0f7e590d6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/0dbce34e1e782058b975c42148e4f834.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/04d31f881aa13862d3d7fa0fa658309d.jpg

Love the car! Everyone should have a "spare" 68 RS laying around:lol: Happy for guys that you get to make memories and pass along valuable skills...be sure take lots of pics of you guys working together. Some of the best posts on here are of people with their cars from "the old days" especially when they still have the same car! Good luck, have fun and keep the updates coming!

Some of the best posts on here are of people with their cars from "the old days" especially when they still have the same car! Good luck, have fun and keep the updates coming!Lol!! Yeah... I literally had this car fall in my lap 9 years ago... Was not looking for one but had plans one day to build a clone (with a few upgrades) to my first car I ever had. (pics below) The one that got away that I wish I never sold back in 1997... But it helped me buy first house and start a family... So no regrets.. The plan was to wait until the 55 was done. My boys are 13 & 11, and reality is the 55 is roughly 18-24 months out. By that time who knows if the boys will want to... So the wife talked me into getting it running. So here we are, with the wife's endorsement!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/4f9ed627977a952b5ca6bebeff5d16ef.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/b4bffa5f4c063f7991a419ad8a18b073.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/d77ff76ab9200ac21bfab07427d79790.jpg

James and I had a very productive weekend. Pressured washed the entire car top and bottom. Yanked out the rear suspension and rolled out the old subframe, motor and trans. The underside of this car is so clean. All original paint and no undercoating. A shame to cover it up but decided to shoot the whole underside and protect it for another 50 years. Made a road trip Saturday to see Jody who graciously stored all my junk for longer than I care to admit. Picked it all up and brought it home. Now it's time to get it all ready to slide it under. Going to take it all apart and give everything a fresh coat of paint, polish up the hardware and put it back together. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/4bfcf4a77817cab52f1ebd63f3204dfc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/38167d0411e703c76ae921fac5889b94.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/cecbafd6348b8686632ec062d8a7aa66.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/7ab0617b52a798d4f1dc68862a6511b3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181029/2e1ba66e5328ac2c60a7a2c1c7759c25.jpg

Well.... Christmas came early for the Camaro!! What turned out to be just leave it as is and just drive it and have some have fun went out the window... somewhat.... Imagine that... Like car guys have never heard or done that before...Lol!! My Painter heard about what James and I were up to and said... Man... We have to make that thing a little easier on the eyes... So we have decided to put a quickie paint job on it. Just scuff, seal and shoot - nothing crazy. It's all original paint and the body is in great shape. Was going to with the original color butternut yellow, but the kid ain't feeling it. So we may go a light charcoal Grey or?? We shall see.. Either way, since we decided to paint it we can't put old stuff on it, right? So we went shopping..... Decided to do a few upgrades along the way as well... DSE hideaway light Kit, Dakota Digital VHX gauges, Retrosound stereo, Sniper EFI, and almost everything on the outside new...... Let the fun begin..... Love that kids smile!!! He is excited!!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181213/083283980543602caba74499bf612c3d.jpg

Well, we got the underside wrapped up. Sanded off the surface rust, scuffed the rest with scotchbrite pads and wiped it all down with acetone. Then after that sprayed the underside with bedliner material. Hopefully this weekend get the rear suspension back together. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181219/a2677596d6431a3f6253df8a518d8366.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181219/486c6f126100155786a89e713a8cdd75.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181219/a58062543029b25b79a90991462f00e7.jpg

How much trouble was it to spray on your back? A rotisserie won't fit in my garage, (and adds a considerable expense) so I was considering doing this also.

Thanks! It's been a good time working side by side with this kid. The undercoating I used is made is bought through Finish master. Here is the link. It comes in Aerosol cans which makes it nice. Very durable and paintable. If I remember it was only like $15.00 a can and I used 4 cans to get this done. I plan on using on the back side of the fenders and trunk as well. I was told that SEM makes this for them and they market it.

It was a little work and the back and neck felt it a little afterwards - but not bad at all.

I suck at updates!! Lol!! But we have been still plugging away on it. Underside is all done, firewall, frame and accessories painted. Motor and trans cleaned up, painted and back in. Motor and trans had very little miles.. So just a clean up was all that was needed. Brakelines, fuel tank, fuel lines, booster. And master all done... Need to get the exhaust in it, get it on the ground and get it prepped for paint. By far the best thing in this is doing this with my son. He has lit up more than I have ever seen. #projectmemorymaker 7002870029700307003170032700337003470035

So this car was an all original paint car. The plan was to to just leave it as is. Although not a pretty patina... That was the plan. Well... My buddy Jim, aka Painter, said... Come on... Let's just do a quick scuff and shoot. Make it look a little nicer. So James ended up scuffing the whole car with 220. Joey, little bro, even got in the mix working on the hood for us. We took it to Jim's and the plan was to toss a few coats of filler primer on it, quick block and be done. We'll... That escalated quickly. Turns out the paint was dead and was flaking off. So Jim stripped the entire car. We knew we had a couple rust spots that needed to be addressed. Aside from that though that car was extremely clean. When we gutted the inside we found a Lowenbrau beer cap under the drivers seat. This car had been sitting since 1983. Wonder how long that had been there? James was going to throw it away. I plan on cleaning it up and leaving it in the glove box. Keep that memory alive. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/98e76ee955b00aa0550c5b6bb72a2266.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/7c23b1612aad6382b7d28b4278a1ddcd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/30d2c0be7234dbaae49ab48e2551b041.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/b98de0749742c9faa05a7f1fd7b684b8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/423657c190ef9b866f889467e7cb9d51.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/c4f1383f529275e2a9e88853ff34d77d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/2a9f6bee049e7058e7063aba84ec4395.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/53eb8e8cde228d3f9549452aee60c874.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/d3d6f82f5093797c43b7789e10fc68ad.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/bd9af1ab184c588f5040cf27d7c8b0fd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/996a3b9b693c35e017839c0e372724d0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/f56fec74c4aeeee9d5b127d24dba9b61.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/3ab23504880ea11dbd90abd8dcc696ec.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/abcd3bf7ed5b1c4980fcccccd36ed117.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/defb1ba1390bf3516af00d6fdbc4422b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/9193f0a77b095ba0cb8a414dbbfa29a0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/cb240d79d03c7cf6f37f5a6d58b9fac3.jpg

Color time!! James wasn't feeling the original butternut yellow. I told him any color as long as it was an original 68 color. So it was going LeMans Blue. Then literally a week before it was going to get sprayed he saw this color. He wanted it to stand out from the rest... So here we are. Very pleased with the color choice. Jim mocked up the front end because we were going to go with a bumble bee stripe, but then opted not to. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/4031c3330a74dedb4217fe306dd71f74.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/110a0af610cf0e5d8c94880a43197d76.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/236e104457bf747b4638da10c6afd19e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/f226816bf46807d91a9f8e3efe5c1f92.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/9cedf8dc4fbbf12d9e1a7f28a1587ead.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/2112ee66d9797c0ef2bf83177ef2bd13.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/7709adef3bd99d93cb448bf07e24d4da.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/5884ee055241a4b0ff1ebd61894eb169.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/db0fc22e81d642e0e9c5f86fda9acdcc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/c191c62a1b6c22fccff71bcab10f3da9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/fa778879809817b8d09050b7d44985d4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/99bbc272a0a1f80ead5a41230d317173.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/b232bf0f8fa6764dd9a18aab3006d265.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200926/1045d966c5cff62081e26c6d48434ca7.jpg

So here is where we are today. Most of the trim is done. Ordered up all new smoked glass all the way around. Unfortunately the rear glass is defective which is why the trim is not on. Have a replacement, just haven't put it in yet. Currently in n the process of wiring the entire car. Well.... Sunday was a HUGE milestone. We all jumped in the Camaro for its official first drive. I can honestly say everything went perfect. Put around 50-60 miles on it. Nothing crazy... But it did everything we wanted it to without any hiccups. James and I embarked on this project Oct 19, 2018. Almost 2 years to the date it is finally done. Been an amazing journey working hand and hand with him. Something we will both reflect back on for the rest of our lives. Aside from the paint, which my good friend Jim Ramirez handled, we did everything in our garage. Not a single nut or bolt left untouched! I included a few before pics to see how far it came. Looking back at these pics the transformation not only of the car is amazing, but also those of James DuPont. He is a young man with a huge future ahead and we couldn't me more proud.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201117/0a7b0feb075431b9431abe155541a271.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201117/9b9ccb20223af8307e67253ee2f7f2db.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201117/e94821d7a742874e4ab28a57ee9c9cc9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201117/1208e2b26d58b1d7cf1d30cd6127305f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201117/0a23be42b8bfd7fa9539fe260fc4e740.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201117/644947b9af8bd22663faf60c3e1de05e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201117/939b9e3dac44afd1c5a6f69ae74b2469.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201117/8aaf4cbe3d57675a651966df77655557.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201117/e5f56c890c27218c6def6c416d18b53f.jpg

Well... Been putting some miles on it. Have about 600 miles on it so far. Shaking it out. Had problems with the Holley Sniper unit. We started noticing issues the hotter it got. Andrew B was helping put a tune it and thought the ECM was giving us issues. Spoke with Holley Tech. Went through some trouble shooting with them and determined it was the ECM. Even though it was out of warranty they didn't blink an eye and took care of it. They sent us a brand new unit. MAJOR props to Holley for their support!! James swapped it out by himself. I double checked everything and looked great. This thing has NEVER ran so good, all across the board. I almost don't want to mess with it, but we're going have Andrew work his magic and
put a better tune it. The other thing that given us a little issue was a caliper that was hanging up. Wilwood makes a 2 Piston Caliper that bolts in the stock location. D52. Simple swap and really slick. Once we dug into found the rotors were on the ragged edge so we swapped those out as well. $550 for all new Calipers, Powerstop rotors, bearings and seals. Much stronger pedal. I never did before and after testing but HUGE difference in stopping!! James has been getting some time under his belt driving it around a bit. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210203/aa8f1f31a14c5e52b700e119a98bcc39.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210203/2ba21697b0756562fc9ff3e617c207f6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210203/2997678fe50d5dac97a0d4cb58f50031.jpg

Well, James is a Senior now and has had to write multiple essays on various things as he is applying to many Colleges ....

This was the ask...

Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

James' essay

In 1968, Chevrolet produced 40,977 RS Camaros, and one of those ended up in my possession. Growing up, the Camaro was ever present, but I never thought much of it until my dad asked me if I wanted to help him restore it. At 14 years old, I had no mechanical experience; I had never even held a wrench before. However, I had seen my dad restoring cars throughout my life, and I knew he would be there to help me when I needed it. I had no idea where to start, but my dad took the lead. Within hours we had the entire front end of the car apart. After about a month, we had most of the car disassembled, and it was time to repair and refinish everything. I was constantly sanding, cleaning, and repainting parts throughout this process. The first time I painted, I didn’t clean it properly, resulting in the paint starting to flake. The second time I painted it, I used too much paint, causing it to drip. After much trial and error, I became fluent in cleaning and repainting any part that needed it. This process of trial and error continued for years, but it was the end goal that kept me going.

Finally, the day came when we were going to start the car for the first time in 37 years. Now 16, I was beyond excited to start up the engine. When the time came, I cranked the motor, and all I heard was the whine of the starter. The engine would turn over, but after multiple attempts, it still wouldn’t start. Feeling demoralized, we rolled it back into the garage and tried to figure out what was wrong. After troubleshooting, we discovered that the fuel lines were flipped, and no fuel was getting into the engine. With the problem fixed, we rolled it out of the garage to start it up again. “3, 2, 1,” but this time, the whine of the starter was not there. The starter was broken; the car wouldn’t start. Back to the drawing board, we rolled the car back into the garage and had to start over. This time we discovered that the starter had gone out, and we had to replace it. With all these repairs done, we finally got the engine started. When the engine fired up, my pride, happiness, and gratitude were overwhelming because we had finally accomplished what we had set out to achieve.

Despite the setbacks, I learned to enjoy the process and never give up. I can persist in facing challenges and achieve anything I want. Seeing the improvements on a day-to-day basis kept me motivated when I started to feel overwhelmed. One of my favorite parts is taking it to car shows with my dad and talking to other car enthusiasts about our project. This two-year project with my dad is a significant milestone in my life. Reflecting on late nights with my dad was when I truly got to know the man he is, and I understood that he was a model for me for the kind of person I want to be. I realized I wanted to foster the same type of relationships with other people in my life that I love and care about. This process taught me that the journey is truly just as important as the destination.
___________________________

Serious proud Dad moment here. I'm going to reflect back on this one until the day I'm gone..... We try so hard as parents to raise our kids and hope they get it... This kid gets it 100%, and truth be told.. He has made it easy for us. So blessed and proud. ( And yes.. I was cutting onions when I read this...)

Well, it's been about 2.5 years since my son and I completed the Camaro. We have put about 9400 miles on it and been an absolute blast. We decided it was time to do a little update to it. What better way than to put some new wheels on it. We decided to hit up Boze. They have a new series of wheels out called their Flo-Lite. We wanted to keep the classic look, so we opted for a traditional 5 spoke design. Their B3's fit the bill perfectly. We went with 18x8 with a 4.75" bs with a 235/40 up front and 18x9.5 with a 5.5" bs with a 275/40 in the rear. They fit like a glove. The finish on these wheels are perfection. As much as we drive this car we didn't want to spend a million bucks for wheels. These wheels seemed like the perfect choice for us. And to top it off, they have them in stock and we're shipped the same day. Boze was great to deal with. Their friendly advice and knowledge was exceptional. Can't thank them enough! 8161381614816158161681617
