The event on the 17th, is it at PIR or ORP? I’ll be heading south to Thunderhill...or maybe Sonoma...not real sure yet. Either way I’m coming through Friday on my way south.

PIR, 3 to 8 PM Track Night in America.....you better stop by.

Had a little settling going on in the frontend so jacked the car up to adjust the coilover to find that something was going wrong. I was able to move the entire wheel assembly 1" front to back, it was super weird. Started checking things out and narrowed it down to the lower control arm bushing, at first I thought it was the bolt was wrong, but more disassembly led me to these gems.

I have never seen a bushing fail in that amount of time. Approx 300 or maybe a little more miles. 10 auto cross runs, 6 speed stops and 4 laps around a track.

These things are like gum. Super soft. We compared them to new in the package super blue bushings (IPD) and these were softer but not by a ton.

I thought that possibly the ATF from the power steering leak had hurt them but it did it on both sides.

So I tore everything down, first side fought me but the pass side was 30 mins tops.

Late Friday night trip to the twins and they whipped up these awesome pieces.

https://i.imgur.com/EOPiHc1h.jpg

These are delrin with new sleeves. They pressed in the lower control arms pretty easy and we were off to the races.

Curious to try these out. We have no idea how long these will last at all, they are just a test. Initial drive was a massive improvement in turn in and steering feel and feedback. Little additional NVH was added by changing these out for some reason. Car is night and day difference with these installed.

Huge shoutout to these guys too. They have been a huge part of this thing, helping out with motor mounts, steering shaft, custom one off bits here and there like the dash insert, these lower control arm bushings, the LSX badges and lots of hard to find bits and pieces.

Thanks Scott and Taylor!!

Got the car together at 1 am, up at 5 for the portland transmission show, its a low key show but a great event tons of variety, mostly hot rods but some killer VW's.

Asher gave me a hand on Sunday trying to isolate my fuel leak. We used the smoke machine to find it and its the filler neck gas cap, we dropped the tank and replaced the filler neck to be safe as it was all ovaled out. Still leaks....so I need a new gas cap.

https://i.imgur.com/aLitZurh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/UPiblh8h.jpg

Hardest job was getting the clamp on the filler neck at the tank.

Definately helped but still need a new cap. Smell is much better than before.

Drove it around town a bunch this weekend. Exhaust is too raspy for me, I think its the front muffler making the raspy sound so that might be on its way out.

Car is a riot to drive, badly needs an alignment and even more important a stereo.

Killer pics from LS Fest came in.

Dude it was shocking how much different it was on turn in. I cannot wait to get some more seat time in it.

Have a few things to fix, rev limiter being one of them. It just hits a hard limiter, tuner says he thinks he knows what is going on so we are going to look into that thursday night.

I need more gear, or raise my rev limiter now.

Weather held out on Friday so I snuck out of work a little early headed home, grabbed the trailer and the old **** box and headed to PIR for Track Night in America.

Great group of cars, interesting group of drivers.

https://i.imgur.com/koWsiqlh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/oNReQKBh.jpg

I didnt take too many pics was busy driving and doing some tuning on suspension bits.

First session out, much much better turn in with the delrin bushings, front control arms still have a little wiggle in them, assuming its the bubble gum rear bushings still in there. Does it on hard braking entering a corner, probably need to do more braking before the corner

Had a little shimmy on the rear of the car on corner exits in the first session but the car was doing well, full 20 minute session, no steering issues, got to 217 (Still on the stock 190 degree stat).

Pitted the car, adjusted the rears 4 clicks softer, adjusted the fronts 4 clicks stiffer. checked tire press, 30 front 27 rear. Good notes.

Rear diff needs a hose on the vent tube, losing a little oil out of that but not enough to stop from running again.

Session 2, much better, less rear wheel hop on corner exits, able to drive the car much harder, notice a little understeer mid corner, car rotates really welll, turn in is excellent.

Had a hell of a time, passed everything in our session except an RS3 that I had an awesome time running with, he was a better driver than I was so once he got around me I hung with him and followed his lead.

There was a guy out there in a McLaren that was a horrible driver, didnt watch his mirrors, wouldnt let anyone around him and though because he had the fastest car out there that he was the fastest driver....he was not, by a long stretch. Passing only on a point by and I wasnt going to break the rules but we both had him covered by a long shot. I was starting to get a little angry, realized it was just for fun and tuning and pull off track a few minutes before the end of the session, a solid 18 minutes out.

Car is getting better, getting used to it. Power and grip in corner exits is awesome, its much faster than I am used to in the F100.

Needs a little softer rear springs, I have 450's in now, ordered some 400's and 350's to try out next week.

I still believe it needs more front bar, I have a 25 on it now, going to go up to a 28mm and see how it does, could make the understeer worse.

I need more front camber.....more on that later.

Rear Diff Breather needs addressed as well as a 160 degree thermostat.

Was stoked to have Robert drop by with his father in law, we had a great evening, car drove into the trailer. Good Day!!!

Saturday was IPD's big annual car show and garage sale, car was pretty well received there and I took home a best of show trophy. Thanks to IPD for putting on this event, its a great time for all of us Volvo Folks was good to see some old friends and make some new ones as well.

https://i.imgur.com/dREcRO1h.jpg

I took half the day off today and cleaned up the shop, ordered a bunch of parts and then got too it.

Havent been looking forward to this but its got to be done.

These are Kaplhenke adjustable caster/camber plates with his strut bar as well. There are no instructions included with the kit so for anyone that needs to do this in the future here is what I did to get the camber gains but still keep the structure in the tops.

https://i.imgur.com/G81Gkrhh.jpg

I then traced out the inner shape of the strut tower opening on the top of the strut tower so I had an exact location of where I needed to cut.

Taped up and protected.

https://i.imgur.com/dp9T3mEh.jpg

You can see the pencil line

https://i.imgur.com/oQrssVXh.jpg

Drilled the corners so I had a nice radius and gave myself a big hole to start with the airsaw.

https://i.imgur.com/ODObb1Ih.jpg

Rough cut.

https://i.imgur.com/TYTesnrh.jpg

I cleaned up the hole with a 1.5" round sanding disc on a die grinder and several different files. I then touched up all of the bare surfaces with color matched paint. Its not perfect but 90% of it is hidden away,

https://i.imgur.com/MTkERc6h.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/edlX2Xjh.jpg

I think it actually looks better now than before so I call that success!!

https://i.imgur.com/AwXcurAh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/ygsRRg5h.jpg

I am not quite sure how much camber I gained, but I gained a bunch of tire clearance, and the strut top moved in a good .75" I still have a little more to gain.

Will get it all buttoned up tomorrow before the rest of the parts show up, hope to have it all together before next Fridays TNIA in Seattle.

This write up came out today, pretty stoked to see this posted up from our shoot a few weeks ago.

All in all pretty awesome weekend and last few weeks, fun to see people dig the car.

Thanks for all the help and support over the past year, its been fun as hell!!!

I havent been great about updating this thread lately...

Car did awesome at TNIA in Portland a few weeks ago. Two solid 20 minute sessions before some weather moved in and I loaded up. Had a few issues with temps again being in the 217-220 range. Not something to worry about but it was warmer than I wanted it to be. Swapped in a 160 degree stat.

Also had a lot of understeer, so I got a real alignment done on the car as well. 2.7 degrees of camber.

Loaded up here at noon on Friday and headed North, ran into a nasty rolled over freight truck on highway 512 between Tacoma and Puyallup that held me up for almost an hour. Got there just in time for the drivers meeting.

Got the car unloaded, warmed up and got out to grid for my run group.

Oh man did my changes help a ton. They recently did a big upgrade on the back section of this track and its so much better, real curbing that you can drive over, even carry some tires too. Took a few laps to get the hang of the new layout and get a grip on the car.

Its a big fast track if you have never been before and has a monster of a straightaway. Although I am convinced that the rear end has 4.10's instead of 3.73's in it. Either way, the understeer is just about gone now, adding the camber made a huge change on turn in and corner entry, rear spring change settled the rear of the car down a lot. I was having a blast.

Temps were staying in the 190's so a huge improvement from the last track outing.

Brakes have zero fade no matter what I did. I need to work on my 4 to 3 downshift, have hit 5th a few times on accident. Need to adjust accelerator position up a little to assist with heel toe.

15 mins into the session or so, I came through turn 2 and felt the car do something weird mid turn, I couldnt quite tell what it did but it shifted over a few inches off the line.

Then on the next straight the steering wheel was no longer straight while I was going straight.......

So into the pits to see what was going on.

https://i.imgur.com/FkhIkJ0h.jpg

Unfortunately it appears that my steering rack has jumped a tooth. There was a pretty good clunk in the steering when working the wheel back and forth. Once under the car I could move the rack output back and forth a good 3/8".

Bummer that it ended my fun filled weekend of car stuff waaaaay early. I had planned on track night friday, Seattle cars and coffee on Saturday and Auto Cross on Monday.

Instead I had Dinner with my nephew and his lady friend and hit the road from Seattle about 9 for my drive back to PDX.

Saturday I tore this **** apart.

https://i.imgur.com/IW6FczQh.jpg

Picked up a known good rack from Scott and Taylor. Very minimal play in this one.

https://i.imgur.com/7Bn2S8mh.jpg

New Rack in!!! Get the rack in, fill with fluid and bleed a little before sleep time.

Woke up to a nice puddle under the car, not coming from the rack. The "rebuilt" pump was leaking now. It wasnt from the high pressure line like I thought as the car had not started yet.

So here we go again.....

https://i.imgur.com/7trev9ch.jpg

I tried to round up a pump but with no luck this weekend. I ordered a new pump from Turn One this morning. This time it has a real rebuild on it, tested before it leaves with a new reservoir and a billet wheel so the pulley doesnt need to be pulled each time you remove it.

Bummer that I missed out on all car stuff this weekend but I did manage to get a ton of stuff done around the house. All hard surfaces got pressure washed, trip to the dump, goodwill, took care of some touchup paint on the interior of the house, installed out killer new bedroom ceiling fan, assembled a new bed for the spare room.

The wife got the best end of the 3 day weekend for sure.

I have an event on the 8th and 9th at PIR and really hope that this thing is reliable for the weekend

My understanding is 210-220 is about the sweet spot for LS's on track. That's where my cammed LS3 operates.

You're a labor inspiration, Sean--you did more work on your house in one weekend than I have on mine in five years or so. Freak out much?

Seriously though, the breakage is a bummer, but you are doing it the right way: using it. Good work on that, and good work on proving me right in the sense that softer springs are better . . .

Your newfound grip (nice camber setting!) may require you to engineer a more stout rack and cooling setup. I don't envy the research requirements . . .

I think they figured this heat range out with the 1992 LT1--I remember bugging out seeing a new Corvette get that hot in a smog shop I worked in back then. The LS definitely continues to like it some heat (excuse language--I am in Georgia right now) . . .

More and more reading on this topic and this is where I am looking to land. In Vegas it was 220+ and I was a little worried about it. I think the cooler stat is going to do me good.

Thanks man, Yeah I am a nut job what can I say. I am happy to be using it, just got a little frustrated that this stupid steering is what is going to kick my ass is all.

I believe that the "rebuilt" rack is my problem.

You crack me up.....whats in Georgia?

On a brighter note, Turn One was great so far, parts are shipped out and I should have them on Tuesday in time to get it back together and make it out to the SCCA Time Trials at PIR. As long as everything goes back together and no leaks I should be good to go.

I ordered some PowerFlex race bushings for the front, that is about all Ill be able to get done this coming weekend, still out of town for work until Friday night.

Did a terrible job of taking pics.

Could not give up a perfectly good (Sunny and dry) weekend with the car sitting missing parts so I got a parts store rebuilt pump and threw it on Saturday to see how things were working.

Bled it, put in Royal Purple fluid in the system this time. Drove just fine around the neighborhood so I loaded it in the trailer Saturday night and got my **** ready to go.

Went to McMinnville to run autocross with the BCA club. Great club, really good event.

Rest, Run, Work schedule. 70 cars in total, Raw numbers I am mid pack at 35.

Got some good testing in. Steering did the same thing.....its not the rack, believe it to be lower control arm bushings moving around under the car so I will address that this week.

Front brakes are too hot, I am locking up the front brakes on corner entry no matter what I do......I need to learn to be a better driver.

Temps were running right about 200 sitting around. We got 8 runs in less than a 2 hour run time so we were pretty fast moving. I was happy with these temps and didnt think I had anything to worry about. Temps were in the high 80's, just under 90 and we were in the sun from 7 am to 4 pm when I left.

https://i.imgur.com/CcLgEO2h.jpg

I definitely need to work on the driver more. I feel I am overdriving the car and need to work on smooth before I work on fast. That is a very tough balance and I am still very new to the car as well as autocrossing. I know that there is more in me, I feel like I need some instructor time to help me pick up the pace.

Hope I am able to get the car dialed in before next weekends SCCA Time Trials.

Seems to be the most normal pose for the car, might as well take a pic of it.

https://i.imgur.com/FIlHup2h.jpg

Couldnt stand not knowing what was going on under there so I jacked the car up and got to work. Finding it was easy. Jack car up, wheel moved....

Grab wheel, the front lower control arm mount moves about 3/8" or so. I start digging further and the "stover" or lock nut is loose on the bolt that holds the lower control arm. Not only is it loose on there, its loose like you can thread it like a normal nut onto the bolt.

https://imgur.com/TfVFdkn

Also the hole in the crossmember is 14mm, while the bolt is a 12 mm bolt.

So here is what I came to the conclusion of, Replace the lower control arm bushings with the race superflex ones I ordered. I drilled out the sleeve for the front lower control arm up to 1/2" and ran a new grade 8 bolt with a new stover nut on it a little lock tight and it should be good. This was a much tighter assembly even when things were not tightened up unlike before.

I got one side done last night. Still need to do the other side tonight. It took me a little bit to figure out what I was going to do to fix it.

The hole in the crossmember was not egged out either, it was still perfectly round.

I am sure that I screwed something up somewhere but this is what I have now, should be better than stock in my opinion.

The good news is I can have the lower control arms out of the car in like 10 minutes now after doing it so many times.

I can't imagine the feeling in the steering wheel that movement must have created?

You do realize that each time you make a fix like this you are going to have to learn the car all over again, right? :D

Nice work!!

It was horrible feeling in the car man, turn the wheel then wait for the car to change direction.

I am still learning to drive it anyways so not much time lost there =)

At least I am out using it and getting seat time instead of just looking at it in a parking lot or a field at a car show. Dont get me wrong I like a few car shows here and there but would much rather be out using it.

I see the Volvo is getting some love on Speedhunters. Right on the front page today!

Someone sent me that yesterday. Was pretty awesome to see it on there. Thanks for sharing!!!

When I got over to the passenger side, the nut and bolt were also loose, not as bad as the drivers side but still, not suspension parts tight like it should have been.

I done have any fancy machinery at home but since this isnt a pretty part, it just needed something to allow it to bite into the crossmember I had at it with my hacksaw to give it some teeth.

https://i.imgur.com/u0ecy8Qh.jpg

Performed same treatment on this side, drilled out sleeve to a tight .50" hole, replaced the lower control arm bushings with the superflex black "Race" bushings Used a new .50" bolt, heavy washers, stover nut and lock tite on the bolt.

Took the car out for a quick stroll to see how it was. Most solid the car has felt since its been on the road by a long shot. Curious to see if these stay tight over the weekend if they do I think its problem solved and move on to something else.

Turn one pump showed up last night looks nice, billet pulley is sweet but the pump is not drilled to accept my brackets......so call them and figure out whats up with that.

Now to get some sort of an alignment on the thing before the weekend.

In search of how to get a little more air for the radiator....I had always liked the front bumper on my friend Jerd's Gold wagon so I got to chopping. Stupid pilot hole drifted a little bit so they are not all where they are supposed to be but a little bit of black paint on the inner structure and you will never see them at least I hope.

Thanks for the idea Jerd.

Power steering pump showed up as well, have not gotten a chance to install yet, might wait until next week.

Beautiful piece though.

Helping the neighbor with a 70 F100 and we needed to cap the lines on the mustang tank sending unit. So a couple small plugs and silicon bronze TIG'd it up last night. Should hold back fuel no problem.

https://i.imgur.com/OVzyDRbh.jpg

Truck is cool, Coyote, MT82, crown vic, coilovers front, boingers in the rear still but doing cal tracks. I have done most fo the welding and fab work on it. Still gotta do motor mounts and tranny mounts and we can drop the engine and trans in.

I ordered a GPS Speedo cause I am sick of not having my speedometer working. vnet module shipped out but antenna is coming from Texas so its a week out.

I did a string line alignment on it after all the frontened work and for my first try with it I think I did pretty good. Wheel is straight, tracks well both under power and under braking.

SCCA Time Trials this weekend at PIR so hoping the car does well.

As a side note, after building this the last year and now a few months of working the bugs out of it I am getting pretty burned out and I think a break is needed from car stuff for a while.

Happy Friday!!

I always find a little track time is an excellent cure for car burn out fatigue...

I'm in week 5 of a 3 week project myself and finding it difficult to motivate to finish the last few details. I'm SO close...yet still so far away from hearing this thing run. I'm sure once it fires for the first time I'll relight that fire inside...

Isnt that how it goes though, Trust me my friend I totally get that. Keep at it you are too close now to stop, car looks awesome by the way, its going to be a ton of fun once its back together.

Good track time is a good cure =)

Well, Here is my short reply. I believe that the rear lower control arm bushing mounting and style are what are causing my weird front alignment. I am going to order or build some different lower control arms that have a real rear control arm mount. I believe that style of bushing is just not compatible with what I have going on.

After last weekend and this weeks repairs I was not really holding my breath that anything was going to work.

Friday after work I spent a little time going over some items, chatted with Racepak. Their tech support is not educated on anything with these dashes though. Is all he did was open the manual and read it line for line. Anything technical he had no idea how to do it or how it operated.

The bottom line is that you cannot manually program in any parameters for the speedometer (according to Racepak) and the only way to get the speedometer to work is to go through their auto calculation procedure. Seems rediculous to me.

So I go out, do their procedure and sure as **** I have a working speedometer!!!

I was pretty stoked. Get the car loaded up in the trailer for Saturday morning SCCA Time Trials at PIR with my buddy Kevin and his S10.

Got to the track, ran through Tech, no problems, registration, transponders and what not.

We got 2 20 minute practice sessions in the morning and 2 timed sessions in the afternoon.

Unfortunately my fastest lap was a 1:31.2 in practice and seemed to get slower as the weekend went on. They lined us up in our run groups by previous fast lap, Kevin and I were in the front 3 or 4 spots all weekend long so we got 4 or 5 good hot laps in before we caught lap traffic, me in front a couple times, him in front a couple, we had a blast chasing each other around and surprised more than a few people in our run group.

https://i.imgur.com/qFdKrsnh.jpg

In impound after our session for a debrief. It was a great rundown of what happened in our sessions, what worked, what didn't and so on.

I chased Kevin all weekend but he was just faster than me and I had to settle for 2nd place out of 2 cars in our class of MAX 1. Either way though we had an awesome time.

After our first session, the steering wheel went to about 10 degrees to the right and stayed there all weekend, made a little adjustment and said f it and ran it. None of the hardware came loose. I paint marked all hardware before we left and nothing moved at all so that was good.

Only issue I had all weekend was that and the panhard bar came loose on my second to last session, going to need to add that to the list of things to check after every run. Got a little blip of low oil pressure on Saturday, was a little low so added in some oil and ran all day sinday without a problem. Reading up on it, Holley in very small print says to run an extra half quart if you are going to track their oil pans.....good to know. so its a 6.5 quart system now

Beautiful weekend for some racing!!

Car did awesome, figured out tires are much happier with 36 lbs in them than the 32 I started with. Rear end is happier softer than stiffer.

Driver needs to be more aggressive and I need some more power!!! Ill be ordering a cam and pulley soon.

I was able to hit 130 on the back straight away though, so its no slouch.

Thank you SCCA for putting on such an awesome event this weekend, I had a blast, met some new very helpful people and took home some awards. There is a long story behind the spirit of time trials trophy, but it really comes down to just being there for people when they need a hand, remember life is short, enjoy it and lend a hand when you can.

Now that sounds like a fun weekend playing with cars!!!

I think the SCCA accidentally stumbled on something really cool with their Time Trial program. It is kind of like the CAM classes in their autocross program. They didn't really want to do it, but once talked into it has taken off with huge success.

I can't wait to try one myself.

I can't wait to try one myself.

Totally agree. Although pretty lightly attended. There was only 60 cars entered in but it made for great unclogged sessions, just not sure its enough revenue to keep them going.

If its done right and gets some attention it could be huge.

Congrats on the hardware. Basher said he had a great time at that deal.

I don't think it was an accident at all. They need help drawing in more participants to the track and this was a no brainer way to do it.

Thanks man, pretty fun times. Basher was at a Track Night in America, another great event and very, very well attended. The fun thing about those is you get great seat time on a friday night so you dont have to give up an entire weekend like the Time Trials.

Not much to report here.

Still brainstorming on the front suspension situation.

I did however manage to get the racepak 100% functional for the first time last night. Went through and programmed in all of the gears so that the gear indicator on the dash works. I am shocked at how well it works too considering its going off of mph and rpm. Pretty cool though.

https://i.imgur.com/m8c6rCfh.jpg

No more track days or autocross planned for a bit now. Going to dig into the lower control arms and see what I can come up with there first.

Probably going to dive into a stereo in the next few weeks though, headphones are getting old.

Well, I am getting to the end of my proverbial rope with this thing now.

Continue to be impressed by the killer stuff these guys have helped me out with on this car. Huge shout out to STS Machining's Scott and Taylor for helping with my idea.

I was having issues with the rear rubber bushings on the lower control arms. I hatched the idea of a delrin bushing for the rear that was captured in the cup, Taylor made the first set, a 2 piece design that would not be able to be pulled out the front of the cup.

Here is what the end result is. A 2 piece delrin bushing, the cup welded into the actual bucket that bolts to the car. For the first time I can without a doubt tell you that this is not moving around at all.

Getting machined

Parts cut and fresh out of the freezer ready to be installed.

https://i.imgur.com/oiZJFlRh.jpg

This cup was cleaned and welded in place so that it cannot get pulled out.

Assembled

https://i.imgur.com/VJpCBy6h.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/xcWrBfCh.jpg

When I took these current bushings out, the one on the drivers side had come out of the cup so far that the flange on the backside was not even holding it in any longer. The passenger side had started to pull the cup out of the bucket.

No its not the Fancy Sellholm arms, maybe those can go in someday in the future.

SO now I have lower control arms that are not moving around, great should be problem solved right.....wrong.

Still does the same ****.

You can center the steering wheel, go out for a drive and it will move from left to right depending on what you are doing.

It seems to be getting worse. If I go hard on the gas, the steering wheel will be off center to one side, if I go around a hard turn, brake or something then it will be off center to the other side.

I checked all the front crossmember bolts and they were not crazy tight, drove it again this morning before work and same problem.

I installed new hardware on the steering rack when installed. Considering that it changes on hard launches, I am leaning towards something loose in the rear suspension.

Might have time to look at it over the weekend but have graduation activities from this afternoon through Sunday.

Any good opinions I am all ears.

Sean, now that you know you have a solid bushing in the front, how easily do the arms move up and down before connecting them to the knuckle? If you don't have much stiction there, and you're positive the rack and pinion isn't moving, then something in the rear could still be adding to the situation. Seems like everything you've done up to now has been a necessary upgrade.

Totally agree with you, its what I was leaning into last week and didnt get a chance to go through it till the weekend. Thanks for chiming in. Totally worth the upgrade and the stuff I did needed to be done I agree with that.

Well, only had about 2 hours to work on the car this weekend with 2 Graduations to attend. One in Seattle on Friday, another in Portland for our Steamfitter apprenticeship program and then a bbq on Sunday for the Neighbor who graduated Friday night.

Got a little time to work on the coyote swap for my neighbor though, just about ready to set the motor in for the first time one night this week and I can finish up the motor mounts that I got started on.

I went through the entire frontend Saturday afternoon. I cleaned, torqued and put paint pen marks on every fastener. The only thing I found that even remotely budged was the 4 bolts on the Driver side steering arm. I got maybe 1/4 turn from 3 of the 4 bolts, but that was it. Not enough to cause anything to move.

I torqued all of the motor mount hardware as well as every nut and bolt on the crossmember, and all steering stuff. Nothing in the front is moving so its time to head to the rear.

I got the car up in the air, frustrated still..

I checked every nut and bolt on the rear axle, panhard bar, shocks, upper and lower links at the axle, nothing was moving. I reached up and put a wrench on the chassis end of the upper control arms and it wasnt more than hand tight.

I continued to find 4 loose bolts for the fronts. Uppers got torqued to the proper spec. I found the lowers loose as well. They had stover nuts on them but the stover nuts were not really tight.

I purchased new washers for the bolt, new stover nuts and installed with Blue locktite.

I took it out for a trip around the area to see what I had. For the first time ever the steering wheel was in the same spot the entire drive. I was hard on it too, accelerate hard from a dead stop, hard braking, steering left and right abruptly.

I paint marked all the hardware on the body for the rearend to see if it moves at all moving forward.

Never did I think that the rear suspension moving around could cause that bad of an effect on the steering. I am really curious to see what it feels like on track now. It feels so much tighter than it every has.

Live and learn right?

So, working out the little bugs now. I have a shake in the steering wheel at about 62 to 70 mph. I think its a front hub issue, but going to tear into it this week and start measuring things out with a dial indicator to measure runout.

Gave the old girl a bath yesterday and enjoyed it being mostly trouble free for a day :oogle:

Happy Monday and thanks for those who have provided help and feedback on this thing along the way, its much appreciated.

No joke. Its been a struggle with this stuff but I guess I have learned a lesson here.

Totally a good feeling, to finally have a change was awesome. Yeah, I dont really do the rest thing at all. I work a fair bit, and dont like to sit around at all. So I go work on stuff, sometimes it gets exhausting I will admit to that.

Totally, guess this is how you learn right? Seems to be, I have about 30 miles on it with zero change in steering wheel position. I dropped it off this morning for an alignment again. Hope this is my last one for a while.

I am going to need a tire sponsor....... About due for 2 new kicks already. I guess that means I am using it though right?

Just caught up on this build, awesome!

Thanks man, much appreciated.

Well, got the car almost all the way to Pacific Friday night...its about 180 miles from Portland north. I made it 178 miles when I took the offramp a guy pulled up behind me and told me my trailer was smoking......I bail out and get to looking.

What I found is with the side door, the fender just sits in two little pockets to hold it in. The entire fender just fell over, would have been just fine but it wedged itself between the car and the tire and destroyed the inside of the tire, not to mention hot rubber all over both the car and the trailer. Good fun.

Moved the fender and limped it to the track. Later in the evening I swapped out the spare. ATC is going to take care of a new inner fender and replacing the spare tire for me already.

https://i.imgur.com/yFwQJTIh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/FHBjBCOh.jpg

3 hours and 45 minutes to get there......ridiculous traffic. I pull in, they moved start times up 20 minutes. Literally unload the car, get safety gear, drive to tech, drive to grid, last car in the line and roll onto the track. Maybe 10 mins between arrival to on track.

https://i.imgur.com/K5kx5oQh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/HZyaM4dh.jpg

I ran the first session, car feels ok, steering is awesome, no more moving steering wheel, the car feels suspension wise tight for the first time ever and I was able to focus on driving this time out instead of worrying about what the hell was going on with the car. Rear feels loose though, a little floaty. Ran 20 min session, had one stoppage for a blown tire.

Came back to pits, no leaks, check tires, hot was up to 42 lbs......woah, thats way to high. Drop pressures down to 35 front and 34 rear. Have a little coolant coming out from the overflow, so drain that, not much in it and throw a zip tie on the hose. Add in 5 gallons of fuel. Car still leaks fuel out the filler neck by the way so I cannot fill it full without it getting really bad losing fuel.

Back on track, car is ****ing dialed , little bit of push if I am off my line or come in too hot but I think thats a driver thing not a car thing. Things are running really well, I run my 20 minute session, we have a driver blow an engine on the back straight in a honda, didnt oil the track down, just blown up. So we get brought in while the wrecker gets him.

Finished the session car was working really well.

Came in, threw in 3 gallons of fuel, check tires, all good. Go out for 3rd session and its fast. I got in three or four good laps, but then get a black flag waved at me. I come in to hot pits to see whats up, they say nothing, we didnt flag you at all. Just as I am waiting to come out of hot pits an ls swapped e36 comes down the straightaway smoking like mad, pulls off just after the wall so we wait.

Track was Red flagged so thats a stop all on track for fire. I ended up being the pace car and brought all the cars back in to hot pits.

https://i.imgur.com/4ZNYIIhh.jpg

Get the next 10 mins on track, had some fun with a Focus RS that I got around, then an m2 that I got around and finished up the session.

Hands down the best the car has performed since its been done, Gaining a little confidence in it now.

I left the track about 9 pm and rolled into the driveway at home just before midnight. Long day, but got to hang out with some great friends and have a killer evening.

I might have another LS on the way for a different car (524TD), so I'm trying to broaden horizons a bit beyond the LS9 cam and Deka 80s . . .

Dude, i need more details on the ls swap car now.

Nothing Crazy on the setup. It will be:

GM 95 lb injectors (still on Pump Gas so no need for anything crazy)
BTR Stage 2 Blower cam
BTR Valve Springs
BTR Keepers and Valve Seals
GripTech 2.45 hub and replaceable pulley
102mm CNC Ported factory snout.

Still debating on doing a 102mm Throttle body or not.

Car will get a full fresh tune on it with the new setup, probably be about 12 lbs of boost with the new setup and shooting for 600 wheel with the new setup. I feel that the transmission and rearend might need some stuff done to it to hold up with this kind of power see how it fares the rest of the summer but I have been driving the piss out of it the last few months.

I built it to drive it and I am totally doing that!!!!

Fun weekend of car ****.

Headed up to the Olympic Peninsula on Friday after work to a little Casino in Shelton Wa. Its a fun place off the beaten path, easy to stay at, always has trailer parking available.

Took a few mins to clean up the setup after arriving. Always like keeping things clean and tidy.

Ran autocross practice all day Saturday with the BCA guys. Killer group of people, always low key. The grounds were awesome. Its an old abandoned air strip so speeds were much higher than usual. Courses were about 1 minute each. We ran 1 course before lunch and 1 course after lunch.

No idea if this will work or not, short clip coming into the stop.

https://i.imgur.com/DZkbjhSh.mp4

Took me a couple laps to get to know the course but once I did I got pretty quick, still a couple of seconds off pace from the super fast cars like the GT3 and a boosted miata but very happy with what I am learning, both about the car and the driver. Looking ahead, smooth, less braking, more throttle early on all helped me out a ton.

Car was very happy with 34 psi front and 32 psi rear tires. I was pushing a bit in the sweepers, adjusted the rear coilovers stiffer and it got worse, softened them up 4 clicks and I picked up a second.

I didnt turn a wrench on it all day except checking lug nuts and driving it. More seat time and I think Ill be ready to do a little more competitive stuff. Been having fun driving the car.

I was beat though. I had 18,000 steps on Saturday alone.

Headed to an event in Seattle on Sunday then home.

All in all a great weekend of car stuff, even made it out to Red Door Meet in Portland. Always interesting to say the least.

Track day on Friday at PIR, going to take a break after that for a bit, getting a little burned out.

Not much of an update. Had some time yesterday so I got the front pads swapped back out for the Wilwood Track pads. Swapping out to the stock pads was the right thing to do on the autocross course, I had no issues locking up the fronts once I did that. So that is my new routine.

You know you have done this a lot when you know exactly what tools you need.

https://i.imgur.com/9yaKuknh.jpg

Gave the frontend a once over, drained the catch can....hardly anything in it, checked all the fluids and filled it up with gas. Thats when things went a little sideways.

I have only filled the tank once before as I have had sloshing issues out the filler neck.

Drove back home and got a huge amount of fuel leaking out onto the garage floor.....out the vent this time.

It was time for a redo of my venting system, I needed a high point in the system, some way to keep the liquid fuel from getting into my charcoal canister.

So what I did was came out of the stock fuel assembly with 1/4" hose, to piece of NICOP line. Came out the drivers side and then have a 12" vertical riser up by the hinge assembly and back down. This should keep the liquid from being able to get into my vent line. Previously it was almost all horizontal allowing liquid to get in there and plug it up. When I took the canister out, I drained a fair bit of raw fuel out of it.

I spaced on taking any pics though.

Took it out for a spin to check out my new mods and it seemed to be ok. Less smelly now than ever before. Curious how it does on track and if I get fuel coming out.

While out and about I snapped some pics though just enjoying the car a little bit. Its a little stiff around town but awesome on backroads. Its a little weird though, after really knowing what the car can do on track, I take it pretty easy on the backroads just a nice cruise with some good corners.

Well, had a super interesting track night on Friday. First session went out and got a few good laps in then I saw something fly out from the side of the car and a clunk, so I came into the pits.

Got the car up in the air to find that the body mounted sway bar bushing had ejected out from the sway bar clamp. I never realized until that day that there was really nothing holding the bushing in at all from sliding side to side. I think some power steering fluid helped lube it up and it just spit out.

I cut up some heater hose into chunks, wrapped it around the bar and stacked up some square bits, wrapped the whole thing with electrical tape and zip ties and went out on track again.

Had some slower cars to get around then found myself in the faster cars, passed them in the passing zones until I caught up to that one guy. Dude was in a newer white Mustang GT350 and would not give me the point by. I made it very clear that I would like by, I was very courteous at first just getting close to his bumper, then half way into the passing zone, hanging out (he was way off line through the turns) in the corners, He was well aware we made eye contact numerous times in his side mirror that I would like by but he was having none of this old ****ty car getting around him.

I finally got a little tired of it after maybe 10 minutes of this and pulled up right next to him at about 110 mph and looked over at him, finally he gave me the point by. 4 or 5 corners later, he wasnt even in the mirror on the straights and I had a great rest of the session. I am not that fast of a driver, but I have a fair bit of seat time and pay close attention to the mirrors. If I am the slower car I dont want to hold anyone up at all, hell, I usually learn something when I get passed by a faster car. Just with everyone had that mentallity on fun track days, nobody is winning today, we are just having fun.....everyone gets competitive though I get that.

I ran the car hard the whole 20 minute session. Temps creeped up to 230 at the checker and I smelled fuel....cool down lap got me to the 2teens temp wise.

Pulled into the pits and cracked the gas cap to a **** ton of pressure in the tank. Apparently I finally have a gas cap that is tight and sealed up =)

I called it a night, shot the **** with some buddies and grabbed dinner.

Spent Saturday fixing what I believed to be my problems.....

When I initially installed all of this I was having fuel sloshing out the filler neck so obviously was not able to hold pressure.

I had installed the rollover valve inside the fuel filler door but it was mounted on an angle. I believe that when the fuel got warm it expanded, on a hard left hand corner the ball on the rollover valve closed the valve and once it had a little pressure on it it just stayed closed. I proved this theory in the garage Saturday.

So another rework of the fuel tank and vent. Built a little bracket in the filler door to hold the rollover valve at the proper position.

https://i.imgur.com/D49nKp5h.jpg

Here is my vent loop on the drivers side to keep any raw fuel from getting into the charcoal canister and out the vent.

https://i.imgur.com/76Po4Hnh.jpg

Still tucks away almost all unseen. I want to build a rear firewall to go behind the seats, thats in the short term plan.

https://i.imgur.com/ugAvMtEh.jpg

So while going through all this, I found the fuel tank to be really warm, like almost hot to the touch. With the exhaust so close to the fuel tank I took some time to pull off the rear section, fix a hanger issue, add in a taller bump stop to keep it from banging on the exhaust.

I hate this stuff, but it does work. So I wrapped this small section with the titanium wrap and put a titanium heat shield on it right next to the fuel tank. I hope that it helps.

I also wrapped the tank with some DEI reflective stick on stuff to try and reflect the heat rather than absorb it.

https://i.imgur.com/5kg7r4mh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/0wD3julh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/94BZT3dh.jpg

I have been pushing the car pretty hard the last few months. Its time for a little break from beating on it. Going to get the front sway bar ironed out and install a stereo, work on the rear firewall and call it done for a little while.

Radwood on the 20th, then GoodGuys Puyallup the weekend after that.

Took a break yesterday and took the buggy out, I have had this thing probably 15 years. Its like old trusty...

Speaking of your buggy, is it street legal? Now that I'm in an area close by the mountains, I'm itching for some sort of trail rig again. My last one was a 1953 Willys Jeep when I was 14 years old. :D

I'm trying to decide which way I want it to lean, more trail rig or more highway rig with trail capabilities. it'll probably end up like my Monte, split personality and not do any of it real well...

Sean, it is great to hear about the evolution of the Volvo--that and your MacGyverisms. It's hard not to feel suddenly defeated when stuff breaks at the track, which is like every time for a lot of us, so good work on that front. You're making work fun again.

At the auto-x I went to last weekend (first one in years), Bob (Panteracer) and I were talking about how few pro-touring types were around. The scene begged the question of what happened to all of the people building bitchin' Camaros for just that thing a few years ago. There were exactly two bitchin' Camaros (and some usual suspects in Corvettes, but they've been there for 40 years, like the Maiers) that I noticed, and this was like a prime northern CA event. Just keep doing what's fun for you; the dopes like us who have it in our blood will always be around.

That Jeep is awesome. One day . . .

I will do my best Lance, but you know how I am, I get bored with things pretty fast, going to keep going on this one though and see what I can do with it.

Thats a call only you can make. A very capable street rig is super fun, I have owned a bunch of super built toyotas a few jeeps and have had a blast with them. The buggy is nice cause its the more extreme end of what you can do, 40" tires, full hydro steering, front and rear separated outputs and no factory sheetmetal make it so you can do rediculous stuff with them and not really hurt anything.

One day . . .

I have gotten a little used to **** breaking or not working how you expect it. But I usually overcome those issues and make it work. The fuel system has kind of been an issue since the beginning, hoping that this solves the last of them and we move on with other fun stuff.

Ill keep doing this cause its fun, I really enjoy track days more than autocross but find autocross a good time, wish you got more seat time and less stand around shagging cones time.

I dont see any pro touring cars up here actually doing anything, never see them at an autocross or track day. I have only seen one pro touring car at 1 Track Night. Nothing to offend anyone here but those that only get driven to car shows seem like the next "hot rod" to me. Something that looks cool but rarely gets used.

I do however find myself wishing that I had built the car to be a little more racecar. Or maybe Its just time to love the Volvo for what it is and get a dedicated track car, or lucky dog car. I have some drive for actual racing now.

Really enjoy the evolution of your build!! Absolutely learn a ton watching you sort through your issues. The build is supposed to be fun, even when things dont go perfect.

Sincerely appreciate the time you spend taking pictures and typing out the details!

Jeff-

Thanks Jeff!! Its been a boat load of fun the last few months, have used the car a ton and gotten a lot of seat time in it, working out the bugs is something I pride myself on and it will all get ironed out.

I enjoy the build threads and hope that they help give someone some ideas or help them along the way. I know that they are a dying breed but its a good way to document what I am doing so I keep up on it.

Appreciate the kind words,

Sean

Lucky Dog? Hells yes! You go I go...really.

Lance-Newer jeeps are super capable, even back to the TJ which started in 1997. Fairly comfortable on the street and easy point and shoot rigs off-road. Doesn’t take much to make a stock Jeep enjoyable off highway. Sean and I both have newer JK wranglers, set up a bit different but both comfortable on the highway and a blast off-road.
Get one, you’ll have a blast.

Absolutely nothing exciting to report. Summers in the HVAC service industry get pretty chaotic so I spend a lot more time at work than in the shoulder seasons. Work is good though.

Been messing around with cleaning stuff up in my shop, getting the superhitch retrofit on the 2018 3500 ram from the 2014 2500 has been a pain. Hope to have it all buttoned up tonight or tomorrow if the parts show up.

Got the new inner window seals on the volvo and did a bunch of clean up on some things inside that were bugging me last night. Touched up a spot on the dash, did some good cleaning on the seatbelt latches, cleaned the seat tracks and installed a few final missing pieces of hardware.

Have a couple weekends of car shows, this Saturday is Radwood up in Seattle and next weekend is GoodGuys at the Puyallup Fairgrounds. Not too sure how that will go since the car is totally not goodguys material but we shall see.

Hope everyone has a wonderful week!!!

Has been a while since the last update. Took the car up to goodguys a few weeks back and hung out with some great friends old and new. Some killer stuff there mostly hot rods but a few crusty cars and a few killer pro touring cars. Really hoping that they add an autocross to the event so there is something a little more active to do there. Didnt take too many photos.

Couple updates. Car was still smelling of fuel so I popped the access door and found the fuel pump not very tight in the tank still even though the hardware was all tight.

Its a Holley 12-133 in case anyone ever runs into this situation. I didnt take any photos but the problem is the hardware to tighten leaves greater than an 1/8" gap, with the thickness of the fuel tank being just sheetmetal and their foam gasket collapsing to less than 1/16" it left a lot of room in there. I hand cut 2-1/8" Cork gaskets and stacked them up and buttoned things up. I believe I have a pretty good seal on things now and the garage doesnt stink as bad as it had. Ill keep an eye on it moving forward.

This has been a big annoyance since I got the car together of it always smelling like fuel.

The other thing I have been fighting is a front end shake above 56 mph. never below it. I have had the frontend apart several times, the last round I pulled the brakes apart and measured runout on everypart that spins with everything being less than .005" I didnt feel like I had anything bad going on that would cause the issue.

Front tires were my next problem. A they were shot from all the track days and autocross.
B. I was starting to believe they were the culprit of the vibe.

https://i.imgur.com/B2x9hwnh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/HTwnBFgh.jpg

I mentioned it to my guys over at 503 Motoring and they took the time to check the old tire before pulling it off and found it had pretty excessive runout on one tire. They hooked me up and got the tires on and balanced as soon as they showed up.

Got them mounted up and took it for a test drive and 95% of my vibrations are gone.....note that I feel any vibration in any car. Both my 18 Ram and Trackhawk have vibrations so I consider this an epic win!!!

New sticky RE71r's mounted up for Fridays track day at PIR with Cascade Sports Car Club should be fun. Forecast is 80 and sunny.

Have been having a little fun where I can fit it in.

Also been doing tons of yardwork on the lot we picked up so that has taken some time too.

Thinking about building another cummins truck this fall.....or possibly a 2 door JK Pickup.

The ideas never stop in my little pea brain.

Happy Thursday

I have been pretty lazy lately though....It uses old ass fox 2.0 airshocks. They work really good for Rocks but not ideal for lots of go fast stuff.

I bought it 15 years ago. But I have rolled it and rebuilt the chassis 3 times so Ill take the credit for it now.

I want that buggy!!!

Yeah its a good time, its old now compared to all my friends new fancy LS buggies. Didnt fix the smell.

If there was a poll, I'd vote for living vicariously through a TJ AEV Brute build, but that's just me. Build a nasty turbo 4.0L for it and make it a manual please; k thankx.

That's encouraging to see you're working out some of the remaining issues on the 242 - the build definitely continues to provide inspiration for the rest of us.

I love TJ's. Until I drove a JK for around town there is no comparison, more room, better engine (I know the purist hate me for liking the minivan engine) and better driving. Now for a wheeler, in a heartbeat TJ.

As a graduation present I bought my 18 year old nephew his very own track day, in his own car with his own Instructor. His folks are not car people so its all on me to make sure that he gets a car fill!! He loves spending time with us so this was an awesome day.

He had the slowest car on track but did a great job. Had an excellent instructor and learned more than a thing or two.

I participated as well. Had an awesome day, other than still fuel system issues and leaks the car is pretty damn dialed in. Had fun running SOLO in the Advanced group. Two guys I got to spend some time with on track were a 2017 GT350 and a C7 grand sport with a small centrifugal supercharger on it. I think it was a Vortech setup. We had a blast. The c7 had just enough mustard to get past me late in the day. He could pull me by like a car or so on the straights. He was dynod at 570 wheel so that makes me feel pretty good. The GT350 couldnt get around me, He could close the gap a little on the straights (Mostly in the braking zone) but I would leave him on corner exits and through the turns.

I helped the Vette guy with some lines and entry speed and he dropped some times off his laps by the end of the day. The folks in my run group were shocked at how fast and composed the car was......to be honest its the fastest I have been around PIR ever and I was a little surprised how well it did.

Sean, at what point do you bail on all the existing fuel lines and make all new from scratch?

The fuel delivery problems\issues were by far the hardest part of the decision making I went thru on my recent EFI conversion. I can say that I'm very happy I choose the route I did. It is basically a Vaporworx kit that morphs an internally regulated late model Gen 5 Camaro fuel module into my stock tank with 2 corner pickups and one -6 PTFE braided steel feed line to the fuel rail. That's it...

Provides a steady 58 psi to the rail, no return line, minimal hose end fittings for issues, super simple but effective.

That and a way to vent the tank to a charcoal canister should take care of any fuel smell issues no?

This is the ****ed up part Lance.

Its exatly what I have. Single in tank HOLLEY Pump that is regulated to 60 PSI. I have one outlet from the tank to a single -6 line (Not stock) that runs to the fuel rails. I have issues with the actual Holley Hardware leaking at the tank. They are supposedly sending me parts to fix but I am not holding my breath.

I believe I am leaking fuel from my vent line (Which also goes into a charcoal canister) Its a little complicated to explain but I am just not understanding how people get vent lines to work without losing fuel somehow.

If there is someone on here that has experience with an underfloor mounted stock style fuel tank and vent system that does track days and isnt leaking fuel I am all ears.

I have zero experience, but what about adding a check valve to vent line to stop the sloshing of fuel in the tank, assume that's what is causing the fuel leak at high g's? Something like this:

So these are not the best pictures but hopefully with an explanation it'll help with how the tank vent on my 1985 MCSS stock tank works.

This is what the pickup tube\sending unit\vent unit looks like installed.

https://photos.smugmug.com/1985-Monte-Carlo-Barney/i-DJcR7S5/0/a83e1922/XL/20190603_133458-XL.jpg

This is what is inside the tank.

https://photos.smugmug.com/1985-Monte-Carlo-Barney/i-DF2SJkZ/0/5ecdcdb2/XL/20190506_185629-XL.jpg

Basically one 3/8s line is the pickup tube from the sock on the bottom of the tank that fed the old fuel pump, the 5/16s line is the return from the old fuel pump and the other 3/8s line is the vent. I now have the two lines that led to the old mechanical pump blocked off and the 3/8s vent line and sender is all I am using this for.

Just inside the tank the vent line has a 90 degree fitting with a splash flap maybe 1/4" away covering the end of the fitting. I don't have a good picture of this, sorry. Think of the splash flap as covering the end of the fitting but still allowing air to vent out or in the tank.

Outside the tank the vent connects to a rubber fuel line which goes up over the rear axle and connects to a 3/8s hard line that runs up the driver side of the frame and connects to the charcoal canister in engine bay on the port that says "tank". The other connection on the canister says "carb" and is connected directly to a ported vacuum source on the throttle body.

That's it... The O-ring seal on the pickup is an OEM design and works great, the 34 year old rubber line from the pickup to the hard line is still in great shape and doesn't seep or leak and all of the soft lines in engine bay have been replaced with new EFI rated rubber lines. The engine sucks on the canister intermittently as ported vacuum increases and decreases but doesn't hold steady pressure on the tank like manifold vacuum would.

Hope that helps somewhat. My car would smell the garage up with fuel smell after parking it with the carb setup on it but now with the PTFE line and the TBI, it leaves zero fuel smell in the garage or while driving it hard. I haven't had it on track yet with the EFI but I expect it to be the same there as well.

Thanks for the pointers and photos Lance. I dont have a purge valve in place, or a properly piped and installed charcoal canister at this time.

I am going to try one more round of venting changes, if they don't work Ill be figuring out a charcoal canister that gets piped into engine vacuum somehow.

Been working on the tunes all week, no real pics to show yet but it should turn out good. Got some cool stuff going on, very simple but hope it nets some good sound quality. Cause remember this is a street car =)

Good work, sir!

On the topic of pressurizing the fuel tank (especially in heat and with enthusiastic driving/Wally 450 pressures) the Falcon has always had some problem of this type, with both Ferd and LS engines. My latest attempt at relieving the dumb thing's pressure is a -8 rollover valve which is then plumbed to an old eBay catch can I've had forever. Here's hoping for less nasty in the trunk-ish area of the car.

Thanks dude, I am getting there. The more people I talk with about this the more I hear about fuel issues. I am seriously considering your catch can idea in the trunk as well. It seems like a solid approach, something that I could empty after each run if there was any fuel in it. Also trying to figure out how I could hook up a charcoal canister on the vent line and too engine vacuum without a Solenoid valve in there. Not sure if it just gets plumbed to engine vacuum or what.

Thanks man!! Its great to hear that people are still reading it. Ill keep the updates coming.

Spent most of last week getting some tunes in this pig.

Aside from 1 bad speaker its turned out very nice.

This was very tough, locating everything getting the holes cut in the sheetmetal to line up with the new hole in the door card. Also missing the lower trim piece on the door sill and the crank for the windows. I had this location picked out a long time ago, as I wanted some additional holding power on the door panels. So these are drilled into the sheetmetal with full length screws.

These are Audison 5x front speakers with Morel grilles on them (Better looking and fit the look and feel I was going for on the door panels)

https://i.imgur.com/KmSmF9ph.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/F2wDESyh.jpg

The plan was to keep this simple looking from the onlooker. So instead of a traditional head unit I went for this setup. This is an Audison DRC, its a direct input into the Bit Ten from Audison and is a really cool, small and light piece. It took a little work with the dremel on the ashtray to make it fit but it fits pretty good. Not sure its the final placement but moving it is super easy.

https://i.imgur.com/xBqGLB5h.jpg

This runs to the Bit Ten in the passenger kick panel and has lots of great functions, I am running it all on bluetooth input so my phone controls all of the music to it. Its a fully progrmable device, Digital EQ, crossover, staging with 5 pre outs to amps. I have software on my laptop and program the Bit Ten from that via a cable. Its amazing what you can do with this piece.

I installed an AD 400.4 amp with the rear channel Bridged for a super simple setup. Amp is under the passenger seat and that gave me great places to run the cables as I have ditched the rear seat air passages.

Sub is a singe Fosgate Punch P2 DVC sub, single 4 ohm load how I have it wired in.

We built the sub enclosure to fit tight between the down bars of the cage and tight to the floor to rear deck height. I covered the front in leather, then built a cover panel for the rear area to finish it off.

https://i.imgur.com/RQY1aAOh.jpg

I initially was just going to cover it but it was way to flat and boring, needed some detail so I thought on it overnight and got up at 5 (I am a terrible sleeper) and threw this together.

https://i.imgur.com/j80Mqf1h.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/4wAfneBh.jpg

Its super simple, but made a little more detail on the panel to make it look like something.

The finished product. I used a small fox tail broom, cut in half and used the bristles mounted on the back of this panel to finish off the ends where the trunk hinges go. They are brown and blend right in.

https://i.imgur.com/gw0zDfhh.jpg

Took the car out for a nice 100 mile drive yesterday morning. Kept tuning on the stereo and I have to say for just 2 5" speakers and a 10" sub it sounds amazing.

Car is pretty damn good. Drives great, cruises down the freeway at any speed you want to go very nice. 1600 RPM at 70 mph is ridiculous. Hauls ass on the road course and autocross.

This weeks project is to fix my god awful fuel system......

Sean

hackster
08-31-2019, 07:46 PM
So I have been fighting with this fuel system since the car went together.

Have had issues with the fuel leaking from the filler neck, raw fuel coming out of the vent, fuel leaking out of the fuel pump at the tank. Its been fun.

So after smelling fuel for the last time I decided to order some (lots of parts) and remount the pump and reconfigure the entire vent system on the car.

A couple of notes for anyone reading through this thread and looking for fuel pump info. Having run both the aeromotive setup and the Holley drop in retrofit setups I can without a doubt say that the Aeromotive is a better engineered product. If I had it to do over again I would have put the Aeromotive in tank pump in.

But here we are so here we go with trying to fix it.

So when Holley sells this they give you a foam ring, the problem is the foam ring compresses thinner than the flange height so unless you have a .125" thick fuel tank, the foam ring compresses before this assembly is tight on top of the tank. I had tightened the pump down on initial install and retightened later down the road. When I pulled it apart the last time it was clear that these were over tightened and the rubber was pushed out. I believe all of this could be avoided by them machining the top of the assembly different.

https://i.imgur.com/IgjKrv7h.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/UuH8lnXh.jpg

Clearly this was not sealing.

https://i.imgur.com/qN2KgWeh.jpg

Holley was nice enough to ship me out new hardware after I told them my issues. So 5 new bolts, 5 new washers and a new foam ring.

Next up was Revising the vent. The setup I had on it was vented from the stock sender, up a loop, and out a rollover valve mounted inside the fuel filler door.

The vent line out of the Holley assembly was going to the factory line attached to the filler neck.

So the first update was swapping those two. The new setup will be quite different. First new part going in is an in tank rollover valve. I rotated the openings on the rollover valve to be from the right and left then the vent line is now a -6 out the front of the assembly.

I cut a cork gasket to take up the too high flange height and installed the new foam ring.

https://i.imgur.com/R3TtEVWh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/rayfCUXh.jpg

Ready to go back in with all new hardware.

So new plan for the vent line is off the front of the pump, instead of the side so hoping to limit the fuel slosh out the vent from side to side.

It is aluminum line over to the passenger fender and a huge loop up to the rear window and down by the filler neck.

https://i.imgur.com/tP6QIvAh.jpg

Then out of that into a fuel catch can then out of the catch can top vented out the buttcheek.

I fabbed this up out of some plate and a 3" mandrel bent stainless 45, a little bit of plate and some fittings.

https://i.imgur.com/j7OgSVlh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/1IdXXrah.jpg

All plumbed up with -6 an stuff. Pretty happy with how this turned out.

Got it buttoned up this morning and took it out for a trip. The first time I have driven the car and had it not smell like fuel both inside and out. Filled it up with no issues. drove across town and back.

I am truly hoping that I can move on with other stuff now but wont know until the next track day.

Now to fix a few pesky interior rattles.

Well I drug this old turd all the way from Portland to Fontana to run in the Optima event.

It was a haul, 1006 miles one way and we did it in one shot down and back. Drove down there on Thursday and home on Monday.

I first ran an Optima event in 2016 at Thunderhill and boy have things changed since then.

My buddy Kevin and I decided months ago that we wanted to hit it up so we made plans way back then. I havent follow the series much at all but had a great time a few years ago.

We got through Tech on Friday and got our run groups and the stickers installed.

This is his s10 and its a bad ass machine.

We opted for garage spots with the weather forecast. It was well over 100 on Friday and Saturday and 98 on Sunday, we were very glad we got them.

I was seriously outgunned.....

I had a great time, the car did great on Saturday but I was off the pace of the slow cars and way off with the fast cars. I had a tough time getting over the nerves and the car was loose all over the track. Saturday was just autocross and D&E. Sunday was speed stop and road course.

I was much more on my game on the speed stop and had a great time running it.

https://i.imgur.com/SuVm9KIh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/34OEIpHh.jpg

Road course not so much. It was so hot, I was hot but the car was really hot. I could only get in a lap or 2 before the coolant temps were too high. I saw 235 on the first session and 240 on the second session and called it quits for the day.

Clearly I need to do some cooling upgrades.

We did the road rally Saturday night about 30 miles in LA Rushour traffic. It was 104 degrees out. It was less than pleasant but got some cool pics.

https://i.imgur.com/1dyftfbh.jpg

Kevin was awarded the fast first timer award and got his $$ refunded for the event. He is a killer driver and the truck just flat works. its 2900 lbs, about 400 wheel hp and has 315's squared setup.

I got the participants choice award from Anderson Composites and a super cool plaque from Optima for it.

I had a blast, disspointed with my driving and the results but I had fun.

The Fuel system modifications worked like a champ, zero fuel slosh or fuel smell in or around the car.

I did develop a small fuel leak at the fuel rail from a loose fitting, snugged it up and seems to be all good now.

Car is going to just hang out for a little bit. Going to figure out my next steps from here. Its been a great summer, the car has been all over the west coast and I think most of the bugs have been worked out.

Optima is a big boys game now for sure. Glad to hear the fuel issues are fixed. I heard several good drivers were really struggling on the autocross Saturday, wasn't just you. How'd you do in D&E?

You drove it there and back. That is an ultimate street car IMO. I think the events should have NO trailers allowed LOL. I haven't ran an event since '15 with them, not because of the competition and race cars, as I think the event is a lot of fun for the money spent.
my cars been down quite a bit and I do not have much time on my hands....Love watching your builds:thumbsup:

Unfortunately I cannot take that credit, we towed the car there and back. Although with most of the bugs worked out I would like to try to drive it to some bigger events and see how it does. I have only driven it an hour or so from home, but it does great on the freeway, would need some cupholders and cruise control for sure.

Man this thread really died off as did my motivation for working on the car. Up until this week it had not moved since I unloaded it off the trailer.

My work load over the summer and what seemed like a year and a half of steady work to build the car then beat on it most of the summer led to 100% burnout mode on the car.

Been back biking, commuting to work some after work rides and mountain biking, that has been great.

Finally figured I needed to deal with the looming overheating issues the car has had. They got really bad in Fontana with the car seeing temps above 230 cutting my track sessions short by 2.

I have felt that the car doesnt flow coolant well for months now. So after a ton of research on the internet I spent a little time messing with the car.

Comments on the internet recommended running the car with the rad cap off and squeezing the upper and lower radiator hoses to help push air out of the system.

I did this with no luck. The engine gets up to 190 and just hangs out there while idling in the garage, 192, 194. This is with a 165 degree thermostat in it.

I had the fans setup for the cooler stat with the fan on temps at 168 and 174 or right around there. I believed that the problem I was having was this was subcooling the water in the radiator, the lower hose was never getting hot even when the temp was above 190. When that stat would open, the cold water would hit it and it would close again.

So I disconnected the fans, ran the car with the rad cap off and a funnel tight in the filler. I ran the car like this until the thermostat finally opened and got lots of flow through the system. Lower radiator hose actually got hot and by squeezing the upper and lower radiator hoses I got a ton of air out of the system. I did this a few times, cycling the fans on and off making sure that I got all of the air out of the system for possibly the first time ever.....I hope this solves my problems.

So hook fans back up , get the car up to temp, same issue, fans cool the coolant down, car gets up to 190+ and sits there.

So I manually jumper the fans on, watch the coolant get up to 185, fans on, coolant drops to 175, fans off, stat opens, up to 185, fans on over and over again. So I have my culprit.

I get into HP Tuners and adjust the fan temps up to on at 180 first fan, then 185 for second fan and that is still too cool. Raise the fan temps up to 185 and 190 and for the first time this thing is working. Coolant temps are running 172 to 185 with the fan cycling on and off while cruising around town, fans off on the freeway.

I am really hoping that I had two things fighting me, air in the cooling system and fans that were setup wrong and that I don't have a drastically undersized radiator.

Other than needing a new set of tires from flat spots my list of things to fix from Fontana is small.

I need to fix my overflow hose and fittings as they leak.

Car needs an oil cooler too, but that will likely be mid winter upgrades.

Other than that not much to report. After not driving it for a month it fired right up, didnt do anything weird and I forgot how rowdy it was after not driving it for that long.

I like keeping the build thread going even though I know the forums are dying but in hopes that I might help someone along the way.

Cheers.

I hope everyone keeps updating their current projects & any new ones started. There is so much to learn from others & forums are great for allowing that info to be spread.

IG cannot touch on what forums can provide & the worse one (FB) is so bad many (like myself) stepped away years ago because of the stupidity.

I always have enjoyed a glimpse into others activities. Yours is better solely on the shear variance of your projects & passions!

Sean, I hope you get your cooling issues sorted out. Glad you could get out on the bike and decompress a bit. You've been powering through projects like Ron Schwarz, so a bit of burnout is understandable. It's threads like yours that keep me interested in keeping my lifelong 66 Malibu project going. I have so little time and energy to devote to it, but it's posts like your's that keep me interested and motivated. Thanks for sharing the ride.

I absolutely love the look and total sleeper effect of the car Lance.....but I feel like I am driving the piss out of it and it just doesnt have enough tire to keep up with the guys with 315's. Sure it could be the setup, or tons of it could be the driver but man the turn in ability of a 315 is huge in comparison with a 275.

Much appreciated my friend. Glad I was able to be a little bit of a motivation, lord knows I need it here and there.

Been spending the last week or so taking care of a bunch of little things that have been bugging me.

Spent a bunch of time wandering the hoses section to find the perfect pre bent hose to get rid of my kinked one for the vacuum to the booster. Also added on some OEM style crimp hose clamps.

I also noticed that the barbed connections I previously had on the radiator were not up to the task and were leaking and looked well ****ty.

So I ordered in a few fittings and converted the radiator overflow to a -6 an. Then went to barbed. on the catch can. I am not in love with the way the an fitting looks, as its a little too racerboy but its very functional so Ill let it roll for now.

Engine bay has been fully detailed, fluids all replaced, catch can drained and nut and bolt performed all around the car.

Stickers all removed, car got a full detail, removed lots of rubber and cone marks from the sides of the car. Clay bar, polished some areas and a coat of Griots new Best of Show wax...stuff is amazing if you have never tried it. Wheels got a full cleaning and coat of wax with a few small touch ups as well.

A few weeks back I got an email from K&N offering up a spot at SEMA and the Optima Invitational. I dont feel like I did anything to deserve it but I wasnt about to turn down the opportunity so all this has been in prep for being in Optima Alley all week.

Looking forward to spending the week with some like minded car folks and learning a thing or two from some amazing drivers.

Flew down to Phoenix a few weeks ago and picked up a new daily. 2013 2 door MK6 golf R. 2 owner, 45,000 miles and in damn good shape. Was a wonderful drive home, took every possible backroad and stayed off of the interstate for all but 200 miles out of a 1,300 mile trip.

Aside from the seat sucking the car is wonderful, light, handles great, all wheel drive and some great power.

Vegas was overwhelming for us. 2 day drive down and 2 day drive home. We walked about 60 miles in the 6 days that we were in Vegas, lots of it for SEMA lots of it from hotel to casino, down the strip and at the racetrack.

I am not sure I need to do SEMA each year, Ill probably take a break for the next year or more. There were so many people there it was insane.

The car seemed to be a hit. People loved that it was something different and well built. Each time we were at the car for something or another people would stop and take pics or ask lots of questions.

I think my goal of subtle from the outside and great content on the inside was a success.

We headed out from SEMA Friday even on the Ignited Exit Parade. It was awesome, tons of people but we were exhausted by then.

https://i.imgur.com/p6wFExDh.jpg

OUSCI was pretty rad, lots of cars and spectators on day one for the Auto Cross, which was half autocross and half road course. Run times were just under 60 seconds and the course itself was awesome, first half was a little loose, second half had lots of grip so it took some adjusting to that.

Road Course and Speed stop were Sunday. I did well on speed stop at 18th out of 32. I had a tough time on the Right side and would have done better if I could get that time down more.

Saturday Night was Road Rally out to Shelby.

https://i.imgur.com/wvZOIxLh.jpg

Sunday LSX Magazine grabbed the car with Kristi and went out to take some pics of it for an upcoming feature.

https://i.imgur.com/ysBLI5ah.jpg

So that's a wrap.

Lessons learned, the car needs lots more radiator. My fixes worked great in traffic and around town even on the auto cross and speed stop the car stayed cool in sunny 80 degree weather but got hot again on the road course. Temps about 230.

I developed some vibration in the car in Fontana and thought it was tires, but we noticed it all the way over to Shelby and Back and it never improved. Sunday on the Road Course, the vibration got worse on hard right hand turns. I got the car up in the air and looked everything over, possibly a little bit too much pinion backlash but everything else seemed ok. I tightened a couple of loose jamb nuts but no improvement. I only did orientation and 1 road course session so I could get a lap time, but they were not hard or fast laps.

I need lots more camber and lots more front sway bar, as I have gotten better and faster, I have been able to push the car harder and harder and getting more induced chassis roll. This is letting the front roll over onto the edge of the outside front tire on mid sweeping turns and I am getting some shudder and push, also have to scrub a lot more corner speed than necessary.

Ill be upgrading the front struts, bigger sway bar and more camber in the off season.

The car needs more power. Will be doing the BTR cam, valve springs, 1000cc injectors, 2.4 pulley, cnc ported snout and a retune on it in the coming weeks. I would love to do an aluminum 6.2 but its not in the cards right now.

A few other odds and ends, hood vents, front brake cooling ducts, tripple adjustable rear shocks and a rearend checkup will be in order as well.

Overall for a car I built in my garage with mostly junkyard parts I have been pretty impressed with it, not only how it handles, but the beating the car took all summer long. The list of things we have done with this car since it was finished up in April is pretty awesome. Not to mention the people we have met along the way have been awesome. Looking forward to more adventures in 2019.

This is all built around a 200k mile 6.0 and a used 2002 Camaro T56.

Time for more chop chop this winter to get ready for March.

Thanks Lance. I could have easily just been there for 2 days and been content. Always good to shoot the **** with you, I was serious about coming down to AZ for a few days. I have to been in Scottsdale for work in January, we should definitely get together then.

Finally unloaded the car from the trailer this weekend and took it for its last spin for the year Saturday afternoon. Beautiful afternoon too.

So here we go Sunday morning, not working at a feverish pace or anything I tore the car down. Drained all the fluids, bagged all the hardware and inspected everything.

https://i.imgur.com/MLah3uZh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/YNpXeihh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/yAKGcCTh.jpg

This was about lunchtime. Found a couple of interesting things. The alternator is totally trashed. There is a good 1/8- 3/16" play up and down on the end bearing so it will need to get changed out.

Tore down the Drivers side after lunch and began with removing the rockers and rocker tray and pulled all the plugs.

I ordered all of this stuff from Brian Tooley Racing and everything so far has been awesome, the valve spring compression tool works so good, they have great instructions online as well. These are a dual spring setup and come in a kit with new hardened spring seats and new valve stem seals. I also ordered the valve stem seal installer tool which took all of the guesswork out of the install.

The process is pretty straightforward on these, a couple taps with the hammer to make sure that keeper is loose, thread in the air chuck into the spark plug hole and give it some air to keep the valves closed. Spring compressor to loosen keepers, pull the keepers with a magnet and remove tool, Pop off keeper, spring and pull the seal and spring and reverse the order.

I took my time removing everything to make sure that it all goes back in the right locations.

All 4 done and ready for the other side.

https://i.imgur.com/iHLHWHuh.jpg

I am still shocked at how clean this thing is inside. It had over 200k when I installed it last year and has been beat on all summer long. The van it was in was one of our fleet vans and had the oil changed at regular intervals of 7,500 with synthetic fluids. This is a pretty good testament to me that regular maintenance is key to long vehicle life.

I have been running Mobile 1 and WIX filters since it went in the car and after being in here I see zero reason to change that.

Going to mess around with the other side of the engine this week and see if I can get all of this buttoned up for the cam swap this weekend.

Then I can get onto the blower snout, pulley and injector and figure out what to do for an oil cooler.

Happy Monday,

Dude I watched that the day it was released....So friggin awesome. 1000 wheel hp.

Got the other valve springs, seats, seals and retainers all installed last week.

Just been tinkering with it the last few days since I have been battling a cold, its getting worse.

Here are some pics of why I decided to do the trunion upgrade and some of how.

You can see that the stock trunion only has about 40% of an actual shaft so the bearing puts a lot of pressure on that one spot...not that this is bad wear for 200k plus miles. But when you put in heavier valve springs it really puts pressure on those bearings and shaft.

https://i.imgur.com/zqIWXZJh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/0IynYdbh.jpg

and here is the other major problem. The factory bearings are just pressed into the rocker arm itself, there is no keeper in there and the bearing is a roller bearing with no keeper on the inside so if things come apart, these end up everywhere.

I chose to do the BTR TRK002 upgrade after a lot of reading up on what works.

You can see how huge of an upgrade this is.

Totally worth the $39.00 in my opinion.

Tore down the front of the engine and built some tools.

A sharp eye will note the stock VVT 1 bolt camshaft still in place. I did elect to build some 5/16" dowels to keep the lifters up in their tray while Asher and I hot swapped the cam.

The only snafu so far is the BTR kit shorted me snap rings for the trunions. They sent them out overnight to me but when they showed up they were the wrong ones so waiting on those still.

I did measure for pushrods and they were correct at 7.400 so got those and 15 of 16 rocker arms installed.

I had a hand this weekend from my nephew and Asher, always nice to have a hand. Thanks dudes.

Looking forward to getting this thing back together, should be pretty potent.

Question for you road racers, what are you doing for oil coolers and where are you mounting them? Any links or pics would be awesome.

I've been following your build and you've created a really cool ride. Your choice of an LSA piqued my interest because I have one too, makes 740 rwhp.
Now that you put a 2.45 on and the ported snout with the 102, have you considered upgrading the lid, intercooler, lines, and pump to control IAT2's? Possibly an ice tank for track days? I've only done one HPDE day, and a couple sessions at Atco, but my cooling mods are probably one of the smarter things I did. Getting the cooling system bled can be a pita, as can be the intercooling circuit, as you've had the displeasure of dealing with.
While you had the front apart, did you change the oil pump, or install the Katech C7 chain set? Who did your porting? From my little experience with this engine, controlling intake temps and heat soak are huge to overall temps.

Thanks.

I have considered installing a reinforced brick in the lid, but I cannot upgrade the lid as the ZL1 will not fit without cutting a big hole in the hood.

The pump, front mount intercooler, lines and tank are all upsized from the stock CTSV stuff so I should be ok there.

I have not considered an ice tank as that seems like its geared far more towards drag racing than what I am doing. Keeping ice in the tank while doing autocross just doesnt seem feasible.

I did install a new timing chain set a year ago when I put the motor together as well as a new Melling oil pump. I didnt go crazy on the timing setup as I dont really plan on spinning it to the moon. I have the rev limiter set at 6200 currently.

You may have definitely motivated me to do the trunnion upgrade . . . maybe on the 524, when I get back to it . . .

On the cooling note, it seems that out front, or with frontal exposure is always the answer. Modern cars, using obvious answers like the Corvette and Camaro as examples, stuff a million coolers into the frontal areas. Anywhere else, even with a fan, seems to be a fairly short-term solution (like drifter setups in the trunk), especially if you don't want to hear a fan blasting all the time. Desert racers with bed-mounted radiators and multiple giant fans may disagree . . .

Since my Falcon had a ton of space in front of the engine, I was able to fill that space with coolers (to good effect so far, including in super-hot weather). There is a tranny cooler in front of the radiator support; there is an engine oil cooler behind the bumper (cut out and grilled in the middle). Behind the support is obviously the 31x12x4 intercooler. Somewhere in front of the engine/front chassis crossmember is the stock C4 power steering cooler, which seems to work pretty good so far (one autocross in staggering heat).

Finally got around to installing this bad ass Turn One Power steering pump and billet pulley.

Dude you have so much room up front its kind of rediculous.

Yes, working on how and where to mount the oil cooler.....and to be honest still trying to figure out what size of an oil cooler to run. Doesnt seem that its a common question to get answered.

Well, not too much exciting going on with the car.

I did get the Williams 102mm boosted throttle body and got it installed. What a piece of artwork.

https://i.imgur.com/C1XRKSGh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/eAOcO6ph.jpg

Also spent some time getting the tensioner reset closer to the engine and measured and picked up a new Gates HD belt to run this setup. Still just a 6 rib. Ill be curious if I need to upgrade to an 8 rib setup.

https://i.imgur.com/6MBwS06h.jpg

Spent a little time getting the valve covers all cleaned up, replaced some seals on the cover bolts and got them on.

https://i.imgur.com/rxW3RhAh.jpg

Also took some time this weekend and installed new NGK BR7EF plugs gapped to .022

Installed the 1000 cc resized LSA injectors. I also found the reason for the leak at the fuel rail connection. Not sure exactly how this happened but I have ordered a new fitting.

https://i.imgur.com/WHDSrPRh.jpg

Also re routed one of the crankcase ventillation lines as it was hitting the power steering pulley the way I had it routed before.

Should be a non issue now. It goes back and around the power steering reservoir instead of in front of it.

Have a few parts on order to clean up some more plumbing. AN steam port kit to get rid of more hose clamps for serviceability. Also have a raw radiator on its way, this time a 3 core with no fittings on it so Ill be taking a shot at building and welding up a new radiator.....probably tack it up myself and have someone else do the final welding on it since I am still pretty new to aluminum stuff and really don't want to screw it up.

Cheers!!

Well the new Radiator showed up and even though its supposed to be the same size just a 3 core and an inch thicker, that proved to be not the case. So here we go.

https://i.imgur.com/VZX5ITEh.jpg

This sucked working in the painted engine bay I did everything I could to try and protect the finished paint as good as possible with weld paper and lots of towels and tape.

https://i.imgur.com/xNJWbSUh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/UPqH84kh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/jfySxs6h.jpg

Capped the ends and built a tube tie the two front frame rails together.

https://i.imgur.com/KpKWLUeh.jpg

Pads that fit up into the channel of the radiator bottom will get rubber pads on top.

I got tabs in place for the lower intercooler mounting bracket as along with the tabs to hold the front of the IPD Aluminum skid plate.

Did a little clean up and taping and shot some paint on it.

https://i.imgur.com/c82kd4Kh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/DqyRxu3h.jpg

I have the upper radiator mounting bracket all done and it all fits under the existing header panel so win win.

Moving onto the fitting up the Inlets and Outlets as well as the filler.

Hope to have it back in one piece in the next week and then onto fitting up a tray to direct the air from the airdam to the Radiator to get some additional airflow up to the radiator at speed.

Going to move on to the splined front sway bar after that.

Anyone on here done one before on a 240?

Been out in the garage after work with my head down running beads on aluminum for a few nights. Talked with Nathan a bit and got some pointers, watched a couple of you tube videos and decided that I was going to tackle this radiator build on my own.

I have learned a bunch of stuff through this process and is why I like building **** on my own rather than farming it out to others.

Clean clean clean. This stuff likes to be clean. My process was acetone wipe down, then scrub really well with a stainless wire brush, when I thought it was clean enough scrub again.

Not being an aluminum welder I was not used to this much cleaning and found that the cleaner the surface was with the best fitup possible netted the best welds.

So I started to mock up the radiator, I first built the upper mount that nests in the top of the radiator since it didnt need to hold water or be perfect since you wont see much of it and it had pretty descent results.

So on we go. The plan was to be able to keep the existing upper radiator panel since I have a lot of work into it and like the way it turned out. You can see though not mch wiggle room in placement of the filler. I had to make a small spacer to get the filler up about 1/2" to clear the panel.

https://i.imgur.com/FO1E3xEh.jpg

All in place and fitment should work great. Probably need to redo the lower radiator hose but upper should go right back on.

https://i.imgur.com/NUSBte7h.jpg

Not being very familiar with aluminum and welding some thin stuff here to mismatched thicknesses was a little nerve racking but all in all I am pretty happy with the results. The radiator had just the core and end tanks on, all of the fittings and filler were done by me.

https://i.imgur.com/ep7er6uh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/oz4vCulh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/rm5vwmnh.jpg

I have been sweating this for weeks. Now that its done I can move on. Get the fans mounted up, button up all of the plumbing and reinstall all removed components, fill with fluids and get ready to start the tune process again.

Cheers!!!

I love the build. Really impressive! Are you running E85? Meth? Stock LSA heads? What's your peak boost?

I daily drive a 3-pedal CTS-V with a stock longbock LSA @ 702rwhp, and I might encourage you to consider a larger pulley than the 2.45"

The 2.45" will work great on the street, autoX, and speed stops, but you're gonna be fighting IAT2s all day long spinning the blower that fast on the track.

You're correct that an ice tank will not help on the track either, other than the first 2-3 laps. The reality is that the brick in the lid just doesn't have the ability to shed as much heat as the blower generates with that small of a pulley for the typical road course WOT profile.

Is your pulley interchangeable? IE could you run a 2.45 for most events, then swap the pulley and tune for road course events? If that's legal, that might be the hot ticket.

I didnt until you said to.....I built an elaborate setup so that I could pressure test with air and check for bubbles. My entire career has been in HVAC Service and that is how we test for leaks so I am comfortable with it and can 100% pinpoint them. I managed to find 2 pinhole leaks, got those ironed out and installed for good. Thanks for the tip Lance. I would not have checked and would have been pissed at myself.

Was at 8lbs on stock setup, pump gas, no meth, just normal boosted pump gas engine. Tune is very conservative. Keep in mind that this is a 6.0 Gen IV truck motor, its not an LSA block, heads or accessory drive. I wish =)

From what I have read and researched....

The LSA crank pulley is 7.8" and the stock truck crank pulley I am running is a 7.5" so that means I have an underdriven crank pulley. I should be overdriving the blower by approx 20% with a max speed of under 20,000 rpm with the 7.5" crank and 2.45" upper. I also cannot fit a larger pulley in there with the Nick Williams Throttle body.

https://www.lingenfelter.com/PRI2014sheets/LSA%20Pulley%20Sheet%201.1.pdf

The other thing to note, I dont spin this thing to the moon. I have my rev limiter set to 6200 currently and usually shifted about 5600 to 6000.

I am going for smooth, reliable horsepower on this setup so the tune will take that into account.

The one thing I am worried about is the brick and wonder if I should install a reinforced one while I have everything apart.

Appreciate all of the pointers though, sure helps having others keep an eye on it. I also don't think Ill be anywhere near your 702 wheel hp.

Love all the easy bolt-on upgrades, Sean . . .

Question: Are you using TIG or a spool gun for the AL welds? I have a never-used spool gun I got with my Miller welder several years ago . . .

It would be interesting to see what a few more RPMs would get you, given the linear power-generating characteristics blowers are supposed to have. Your springs are surely good to 6800, along with your cam.

Happy holidays, dude!

Ah, that smaller lower pulley makes a big difference in total blower speed!

The reinforced brick is cheap to outsource (~$100), and even cheaper to do yourself (~$30 for a kit). That being said, it's boost that kills the brick and 8-10lbs should be okay. If it does deform, it typically just dents inward without leaking, and hampers cooling. IE your IAT2s will creep up as the coolant flow is impacted, but there aren't a lot of reports of catastrophic brick failures AFAIK.

I'm running 16lbs of boost with a stock LSA longblock and a 2.4" upper, and my brick is still fine. That being said, I only street drive the car and never see 4th and 5th gear pulls that you'll see on a road course.

Have you looked at flex fuel? I pick up ~100rwhp at ~E50 over 91 octane.

In fact, you could potentially run 91/93 octane for autoX and speed stop, then ethanol for road course and probably be faster at both events based on fuel alone.

Also, do you have AC installed on the car? If so, using an interchiller to cool your blower coolant in the staging lanes will give you a lot more predictable power versus a heatsoaked blower by the time you get to the starting line, and unknown timing pulled during the run as your IAT2s creep up.

I totally agree, some of the best I have seen of the car. Kind of wish it was without stickers =)

Well, been pretty tied up with other stuff lately and to be honest its been a great break from a solid almost 2 years on this thing. Built a pretty snazzy lifted t56 swapped 940, bought a new daily, sold the old one.

Been tinkering on this but not a ton of progress really.

I had nothing but issues getting these parts, from Summit saying it was 2 days out to being almost 2 months before I finally received it to the Setrab order on Amazon getting lost, then the package getting lost. Finally had everything in hand.

Wasnt cheap but bad ass parts.

SETRAB oil cooler, Russel -10 an fittings, Russel braided stainless -10 hoses, Earl's Thermostatically controlled Oil Cooler fitting from oil pan.

Install went well, I trimmed the backside of the front apron to get as much airflow as possible through the cooler.

https://i.imgur.com/I45PvFDh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/MFUuJj3h.jpg

I ran the stainless hoses as I am worried about heat and abrasion on oil lines. It just makes me nervous to run something that is just rubber and cloth or PTFE or something so not really the look I love but should be strung and durable.

https://i.imgur.com/OIt615Xh.jpg

The only snafu....

https://i.imgur.com/Diyrepdh.jpg

I had my drill stop move and hit the supercharger heat exchanger and put a mother f ing hole in it.

Not pretty but local rad shop repaired it and you will never ever see it. Pressure tested to 20 lbs again never will get close to that.

https://i.imgur.com/sk1axmYh.jpg

I have switched over to AMSOIL on just about everything and now this. I had great luck with Mobile1 the last year but there is a few benefits to the Amsoil stuff and it made huge differences in trans shifting in both the JK and the 940.

One of the biggest good side effects of the oil cooler is the extra oil capacity, I added in an extra 2 quarts between the cooler and the lines. Full 7.5 quarts to full now. Super happy about that.

So far no leaks, need to get it up to operating temps and check it all out but going to work on building some extended front control arms to help with gaining some camber before I drop it back on the ground.

Next round is more camber, bigger front sway bar and new tires and should be about good to go for another round of beating the snot out of it.:omg:

Managed a little bit of time to work on the car this weekend. All of my friends in the south area already racing so I figured its time to get a move on.

With most of the engine work buttoned up I turned to the other part of the winter upgrades.

I am burning up the outside of front tires, the front of the car has way too much body roll and not enough negative camber to keep the car planted in the turns.

I am maxed out on the Kaplenkhe camber plates and am at 2.5 degrees. So the plan is to extend the lower control arm out and gain some camber that way, then fine tune with the camber plates up top. Is going to cause me more tire clearance issues but Ill deal with that.

I know that Sellholm sells a lower control arm for the 240's but ordering parts from them is difficult at best and the KL Racing ones widen it too much and add way too much caster.

So I decided I was going to chop up a set of stock ones and add in .75" and patch them back together.

I used some .75" x1/8" strap so I knew that I was going out exactly square and .75" Bent up to match the shape of the control arm, chop grind and tack together.

http://i.imgur.com/Jjmxuqqh.jpg (https://imgur.com/Jjmxuqq)

With the basic concept working out how I had imagined, I went ahead and buttoned it up. Added a bunch of reinforcement to make sure that the arm was solid and had no fears of it failing at the extension.

https://i.imgur.com/uoxglZXh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/iG70tnMh.jpg

Not pictured is the Yoshifab boxing plates for the underside. I wish that they were thicker metal, they are thin gauge sheetmetal, I was thinking 1/8" would have netted a stiffer arm.

All in all the one turned out good. I ran out of Argon so the other side waits.

With that one buttoned up I turned to a few other things that needed attention under the car.

I have been running a 25mm drop bar up front. I somehow managed to acquire a 28mm non drop bar from the twins some time ago. Our fear was that it would hit the oil pan so they had some 1/4" shims lazer cut to drop it down. I only needed 1 per side and the 28mm bar was a bolt in deal. I was pretty surprised to see how much beefier the 28mm bar was than the 25. I have a feeling this is going to be a much needed improvement from the 25mm drop bar. Unfortunately no pics... Its a sway bar, but bigger =)

Onto the last round of my cooling upgrades. Many people have mentioned that the factory front air dam is supposed to have a little plastic diffuser that directs air up from the lower air dam up to the radiator. With so much being different on this car and speeds of well over 150 mph I figured that something of more substance would likely need to be built.

I had some 1/2" thick UHMW left over from my buggy from a few years back and love working with it.

So I had the wife help with a template, some jigg saw action to cut it out then routered all of the edges for a nice finished look. Then it got bolted into the same place the splash tray goes and tucks in behind the front lip. It will get bolted in the front to make sure that it stays planted at high speeds.

Pretty happy with how it turned out and hope that all of this work to keep things cool has a positive effect this summer.

https://i.imgur.com/eT4W8tMh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/ad6Hk8Dh.jpg

I am hoping I can get the other arm buttoned up in the next few days and get them off to powdercoat.

I still need to get the rearend looked at, get new tires mounted up and get a proper alignment on it before its ready for another summer of beating on it but feel I have done a pretty good number of changes in the off season, hoping for some good results to come of it and a little faster this year.

After much consideration after the steel plate extension approach I continued on with my project. I like the idea of the lower ball joint being bolted directly to the control arm with nuts and washers. Having a plate that is threaded with a super low profile bolt holding it all together just didnt give me that Comfortable feeling. I am sure it would be fine but its not what Ill be doing this go around.

2nd arm went much quicker than the first, and I think it turned out even better.

https://i.imgur.com/xNLslTRh.jpg

For the bottom......I initally tried tigging this together and it worked, but it wasnt pretty. Still fairly new to the TIG game I found that the super thin boxing plates I got from Yoshi would melt away super quick when trying to weld to the 1/8" thick control arm material. It wasnt pretty, it wasnt fast so I put that away and got the squirt gun out for the bottom plates. Was so much easier and although not tig and stitched together I know 100% that this is beefy and should hold up no problem to whatever I throw at it.

https://i.imgur.com/5FkRPUgh.jpg

If I did it again, I would cut out my own boxing plates out of 1/8".

Now I gotta figure out how to remount the sway bar to the arms and get them coated with something.

Finally had a little time this week to get some work done. It seems like I spent the entire week on those dumb control arms.....oh yeah that and work.

New arms painted, new STS Machining delrin bushings and sleeves installed, Delrin rear bushings and welded cups put back in. I noticed that the fasteners on these rear cups had come loose so I installed a thick grade 8 washer, lock tite and torqued them down.

For a stock setup its damn good looking

https://i.imgur.com/zO9yZ3Gh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/gDx5Mb9h.jpg

Straightforward install surprisingly enough they went right on. I have messed with the front suspension so many times that I know exactly what I need to swap these out....if you recall I had lots of issues when I first put the car together with the front end.

So with the new arms on, we had a couple issues, fenders needed more work to clear the tires with an extra .75" of width. Drivers fender got rolled a bunch passenger a little bit.

Then onto figuring how to make it steer. I adjusted the outer tie rods and they probably would have been ok as far as thread engagement but I just wasnt comfortable with the minimum thread engagement I was getting. Checked with some folks and they said 2002 focus outers work...the ones I got were no longer.

So I started digging. Turns out that the 740 inner tie rods are 30mm longer than the stock 240 inner tie rods, this was gonna be close and they use the same outer. I had bought some new inner and outer tie rods for the 940 and they happen to be the same rack.....surely this wouldnt work.

https://i.imgur.com/q6PgSGKh.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/mx0OFSFh.jpg

Sure as ****, these bolted right in, 30mm longer, same boot and everything worked. Stoked. I have full engagement of the tie rod and an OEM product on there with the right taper.

I buttoned that all up, adjusted the coilovers, sway bar ends and got the car at ride height and set the camber at 3.9......best I could get before was 2.5 so I am heading in the right direction.

Got the slam panel on, adjusted the hood latch, grille back on and buttoned up all of my loose ends on the frontend work including drilling and tapping the UHMW air dam so its fastened to both the lower air dam and the skid plate. Should have no problem staying on at 150+

Its hard to see it, but before there was nothing to stop the air from going under the car, now all the air going through the speed holes and the air dam opening should get directed into the coolers and radiator.

Very much needed garage cleaning session with the old turd out enjoying some daylight.

Its rowdy, doesnt sound like a truck anymore as my buddy Asher says about all my ls swapped cars =)

Very base tune on it, drove around my neighborhood it dies once and throttle needs some sensitivity adjustment but its a whole new animal thats for sure.

Cool stuff, Sean. It's hysterical how much utterly useless information we come across in the perpetual building of these things. If only Jeopardy had questions regarding obscure Volvo part fitment or C4 Corvette frame components . . .

On a fun note, one of my new neighbors is a pipefitter with a Dynasty in his garage. Maybe one day I'll have some welding on my car that looks like you did it . . . Another interesting change is that the Cars & Coffee here is so big that they put it on TV on some NBC cable channel (less obscure than MavTV, so I'm told).

Here's to a bit less rain going forward.:bur2:

Thats awesome!!! Gotta watch out for those pipefitters (Thats what I am by the way) Appreciate the props but I am a total rookie at best.

I still cannot believed that you moved across the country, so crazy. Is all your stuff out there?

Very much hoping for less rain and the car stuff to pickup again, up here in the PNW it pretty much goes dormant from September to May or June. Lame.

Here you go...

Tone of Volvo idling is absolutely perfect; it's not at all what one would expect, even with the hellaflush wheels. Then again, it's kind of like the prostitute with the adam's apple and a strangely deep voice, if you've had enough alcohol to appreciate the uniqueness . . .

All of our stuff is indeed out here; I think I did the drive (2500 miles) three times between Nov. and Jan. I could do without another hotel stay for the next year or two. The old 12-valve hauled Fritz the 524 out without an issue, aside from the headlights not working after Phoenix . . .

Things are astoundingly cool here, from beer to mountain bike-specific parks to three road courses within two hours of driving (Road Atlanta, Atlanta Motorsports Park, and Barber Motorsports Park). You also get a bit more house for your dollar.

Gratuitous threadjacking pictures follow.

Pushed the ****box volvo to the side of the shop and started on this little project. Started out as a something to just get seat time in and snowballed a little bit. Nothing major but should be fun.

Basher started on it a while back and had a great start going, I picked up where he left off and ran with it.

Plan is boosted 4 cylinder.

I dont think it really fits in with the big dollar cars on this forum but thought I would update the thread with what I have been up to.

Cheers and hope everyone is going well with this Covid Crap

All is well here, except a sick car and a sick pooch.

Hopefully both are back on the mend again soon.

Yeah, kind of eyeballing the GTC Class, car could be 2595 lbs, boosted 4 cylinder and proper suspension. Car would be a riot.

Sorry about the doggo man, what the story? My schnauzer got Cancer, broke me and have not been able to get another one.

Let me know when and Ill be there......after the BS is settled down. On a side note, my mother in law just retired and moved to Goodyear, how far is that from you? Ill be down there often....

Thanks man, its been fun, started out easy and like everything I went too far. I dont blame him, life stuff happens and he is doing what he should spending time with the boys while they still enjoy hanging with dad =)

Thanks dude, your car is outstanding I have really grown to love the 3rd gens. I got to see the Detroit Speed one at SEMA and Optima and was blown away, I would love to check yours out in person some day. This one is definitely going to be less pretty than the others though. I want to beat on it and not worry about chipping engine bay paint.

Good to hear from you guys, glad people are doing well.

8 year old Australian terrier tore her back left ACL (CCL technically) which was surgically repaired Monday. This was on way home Tuesday. Shes doing good but has to be kept quiet for a LONG time. Hopefully we are past the worst part.

Goodyear is SW Phoenix and we are in NW Phoenix. Plenty close enough!!

Oh man I have a soft spot for Doggos!!! Saw you posted a vid of her up and walking around the other day so she must be doing better now?

Dude, we will have to connect when I get down there and shoot the ****.

Got the flares on and fender done, MM K member in so I had to roll it out to clean up the filth once it was bolted together.

This kinda fell in my lap - a local retired car that I got for a steal - so the Fox had to go. I like the Fox body style a little better but this one had everything and the track bug has bit me, so there you go....

100% agree on the forums vs FB groups, but the information in the specialty groups is so good it's worth a browse.

That is a wide body Fox! What is your outside of tire to outside of tire measurement there? I think I was at 71" on mine....

Wow! That fox is wide. Those tires are monstrous too. Have fun with it.
