View Full Version : 59 Bel Air Redux..........The Reacher

I'll see if there is some interest in my latest project. I purchased this 59 Bel Air about 9 years ago. It was an original Texas car with 80k on it. It is an original paint, interior and drivetrain car. I wanted to build a nice driver that I would not fuss over.
As of current, it has an LS1, 4L60E, Ford 9", Ridetech coil over suspension front and rear, and 4 wheel disc brakes. It's been a great car to bang around in. My wife and I have enjoyed the car immensely, but my tastes have changed a bit as well as my expectations from my cars. I am sick of 2pc driveshafts and a frame that has the rigidity of noodles. So...............having said that...........it's time to blow it apart for the next phase.
I will keep the original paint, and the overall look of the car won't change much. I'll even see how much of the original interior I elect to maintain. That's where it stops. My goal is to improve the car in these areas.
-Handling. A nice stiff chassis to take the squeaks and rattles out of the car and maintain a great ride quality. Not that I plan to autocross this, there is definitely room for improvement. I am thinking a 12" wide rear tire which may require mini tubs. 10" wide rubber in the front.
-Braking. It stops well now, it can be better. An engineered chassis and brake system will improve overall braking and thus predictability. I'll be limited in brakes as I am going to maintain a 15" wheel so I have no issue with the hardcore 1964 and earlier events. (I'll just keep the hood closed)
-Comfort. Vintage Air HVAC as well as revisiting the seats. I am wanting to keep the bench seats and the overall feel of the interior. Modern foam in the seat so as I feel a bit more "planted" while in it. I suppose there may be some mods to the seat frame so I can get some lumbar support and perhaps a bit better ergonomics. We will see there. LOTS of sound deadener!
-Power. Here is the subject I have been struggling with. My inner cheap speaks LS3 to me.............................my inner child screams LT4! The jury is still out but I am leaning to the LT4.
-Theme. The theme wont necessarily change much. I want a car that looks like it got parked in the mid 60's, and then recommissioned recently. My original vision was a car that could have been parked around Gasoline Alley in mid May of 63-65.
On the docket........................
1. Roadster Shop chassis
2. GM Connect & Cruise power
3. Refinish the underside and engine compartment to the standards of a modern build. I am drawn to the Stielow OE feel and sensibility (sorry if it sounds a bit creepy and stalker like Mark!)
What I started with years ago............

Very cool car. I’ll be following along on this one since I have a 59 El Camino waiting for me to finish my 69 Camaro. Wish mine was as nice as yours.

Cool plan.
I was beginning to think I was the only one on this site with a car that used an entire parking spot. I have a 1961 Impala 2 door hard top with LSX power. :D
Is it possible to install a Roadster Shop chassis on one of these cars without cutting most of the floor? It doesn't look that way to me.

To the best of my knowledge, the rear floor pans will need to be modified. We also may need to make a new trans and driveshaft tunnel. The driveshaft is going to have to be rather large to handle the power given the length of it. I certainly will post what is necessary.
The fabrication is going to be handled by Topline Design & Speed in North Prairie, WI.

The engine and trans are sold. I will be selling the chassis and can give a detailed list of what it all has for parts. If that is of any interest to you. The frame is uber clean!
Thanks,

Thanks a lot. I've seen parts of those cars, but I hadn't see the full builds on them. There is also a 1961 wagon with one of their chassis, but I'm not sure the car was ever finished.
To me that is a pretty substantial amount of cutting for the guy who just installed new floors front to back one year ago (me). Problem number two... I might need a winning lottery ticket for the chassis... $20K is a bit more than I happen to have in my ashtray, chair cushions and change bottle. :G-Dub: :D
The weld in sub frame looks like it's more my speed and better fits my goals and budget for the vehicle.

You could opt for the Spec chassis series and save a few thousand dollars...

My chassis will have the REVO front end on it. I did not go crazy checking off boxes, and my chassis came in at about 16k. The SPEC chassis is only offered for 61-64.
While 16k is not cheap, it's a ton of bang for the buck in these cars that desperately need rigidity.

As they say, you gotta give a little to get a little. Give up the floors for better handling. It'll be a good sacrifice.

I'll take the opportunity to give a shout out to Ididit. I purchased one of their columns about 7 years ago. The top of the column had become sloppy. When calling them for parts, they asked for the serial number and told me where to find it.
Without asking for dates, proof of purchase.....................asked nothing...........They offered to repair the column, free of charge. All I had to do was ship it to them. What a pleasant surprise.

Nice progress. You should be driving pretty soon.
Good to know on the IDidIt column. I was looking at those and a friend was trying to talk me into a Flaming River. I really liked the IDidIt column a bit better and I felt (pure opinion) it was built a little better. For me service post sale is often the deciding factor in decisions like these.

Fantastic build.
I have had similar experience with Ididit. I was given one of their columns for a Christmas gift once. Never came out of the box for several years, then that project was sold off. The new project needed a different size column. When I reached out to them, they said as long as I covered shipping then they would swap one for the other free of charge. This was at least 5 years later. I was blown away. How many companies would do that?? They will always get my business and support. They know good customer service!

E-T Sebring wheels, instead of Vintage Wheels? That's interesting because they look almost identical. I think I'm going to look at the ET wheels, again.
What size wheels are those for your 59?
Thanks

They are identical................ET make them for Vintage. The fronts are 18X8 and the rears are 18x10.

I talked to Scott at E-T, today, and he told me that. As much as I want another set of knockoffs, I'll probably order a set of bolt-ons, in 18x9 fronts and either 18x10 or 18x11 rears. Plan to run a 275 front and 315 rear.
Sure glad I found your thread.
edit: By the time I spend the money for center caps w/three spoke spinners and lug nuts for the bolt-on Sebring wheels, it's not that much more money to just get pindrives.

I must say, one of the items I have been TOTALLY thrilled with is the bumpers just bolted on...............and square as the day is long. The front sheet metal fits much better than is used to with the original chassis.

We scaled the car out yesterday. This is with me in it (250lbs). I dont think I could have gotten a 50/50 weight bias if I tried.
I had a problem with the rear bottoming out, regardless of how I set up the shocks.

This car has been BORING! We just drive the hell out of it:lol:
I've been busy with so many other things, that I have not focused on this car all that much. Until as of recent. I have what looks to be a reoccurring issue with spark plugs (twice). I thought I'd throw it out there to see if any of you may have an opinion or experience that is similar.
I rolled the car out of winter storage this year, and proceeded to go for a ride. The engine developed a miss to it. I figured it out to be the #2 cylinder (running much cooler). I pulled the plug, and that looked good. Checked for spark on that cylinder, all good. Took a compression test, all good. Swapped injectors......no change. I then shot gunned a spark plug at it, voila! All good now.
Then yesterday, just driving along, and it starts to miss again. I got the car back to my shop, the number 8 cylinder is running cool. I then proceeded to change out all of the plugs, and we're good again.
In the pic, I am pointing at the #8 plug. Admittedly, the #2 looked much the same when I pulled it. in both instances, the plus seems to be breaking down under load. So, could I just have gotten a load of bad fuel? Are these plugs known to be that sensitive?
The remaining plugs (except #2) have just about 6k miles on them

https://i.imgur.com/7SkZumSh.jpg
And a pic of the car as it sits today

I’d try closing the plug gap up about .005 and see if it will retain a tad more heat without messing up the actual heat range of the plug. Fwiw the tune looks great from what those plugs show. Also make sure the engine (block) is still well grounded. Killer car man!!!
