This project was started back in 2013 but stalled while we built our 2nd Gen Camaro. Now that the 2nd Gen is complete and getting beat on it was time to get back onto the C10. The only problem now was R&D had other product related projects going so they had little to no time to devote to the project. Not wanting to let the project sit any longer I worked out a deal with Ed & Sal. They would make me project manager and give me plenty latitude to build it as I seem fit. A decision they will soon regret. :drive:

We are still trying to decide on a name for the project.

February 2014

The first articles have had a few revisions through development but we're getting close.

Here, Ed is changing the anti-dive angle to 7.5.

We also revised the crossmember. We raised it up to frame another inch and put a degree tilted back.

We've made a few more revisions but the project is coming along quickly.

There was some discussion about which c-notch design we were going to use. The round style won out almost unanimously.

Mocking up the anti-sway bar and a few other items. This crossmember is going to be one beefy dewd once it is all boxed in and fully welded.

We picked this LQ4 up with 78K miles for $2500. Compared to the aluminum counterparts I have been seeing this was a steal and the 4L80 is icing on the cake.

Things to note: Driver side spindle is different than Passenger. The passenger side design is our new custom set-up. It is based on a C10 pin and uses the factory lower ball joint with a heavy duty Moog upper. The steering arm is removable and helped us attain the geometry and turning radius we desired.

We just received our first article spindles yesterday. This was one of the most important pieces to the puzzle. We still have a lot of time studies to accomplish but we're moving very quickly, so quickly that many of the R&D projects are finished and have moved into the production department.

Here are some of the pics from the Shockwave mock up yesterday (based on a 26" tall tire). This is with the 2" Ridetech shock extension, I am hopeful the 1" top will clear the control arm cross shaft. This will give another 1.125"-1.25" of compressed travel but will keep the suspension below its designed operating range. I will mock these up today sometime just to know.

Our bumper is bent up on the driver side so the frontal view looks a little off. The driver side is roughly an inch higher than the passenger.

This picture is a little deceiving because I couldn't get the camera low enough to get the true height. The crossmember is closer to 1.75".

The front frame head just behind the front bumper. Keep in mind that the rear suspension is still at ride height so once it is aired down this height will actually go up.

May 2017 - When I took over the project

So anyways, with some freedom to proceed how I choose I began to mock up some things. First and foremost I put some shock simulators in place to mimick full compression of the 5.2" travel ridetech coilovers. Then I placed some wheel simulators in place mimicking 26" tall tires. I know this is probably less than what some may run but I plan to run 18x12 wheels all the way around with a 315/30/18 Falken tire which is 25.5".

Here is a pic with the frame at full compression.

http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/TotalCostInvolved/C10/20170511_173655_zps24chuplm.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20170511_173655_zps24chuplm.jpg.html)

The frame under the front cab mount is 5" off the ground.
http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/TotalCostInvolved/C10/20170511_173732_zpsg3hqwxqz.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20170511_173732_zpsg3hqwxqz.jpg.html)

Something that has been lingering in the back of my head is the original upper shock mounts we made for the front end. The engineers ditched this design early on because the truck sat too low. Basically the inner fender had to be raised with them so they felt our kit wouldn't go this route. Anyways, we still have a couple of the original design mounts sitting in a box. There is roughly 2.5" difference in height between these.

The rear axle sits above the frame but it does clear the bed.

July 2017

Worked on the rear boxing plates. I removed the standard bolt-on frame plate that comes with the Torque Arm kit and placed it on top of the rail. I don't need to step the rails that far to get the desired ride height but it was a good starting point.

The frame is countoured in this area so I will have to put two bends in the new boxing plate to match the frame. R&D is really busy right now so I might not wait for them to draw these up and cut them on the plasma table. I might just trace and cut them out with the hand held plasma. Sure it's dirty but I am trying to get this thing back to a roller by the Brothers Truck Show.

The Holley Hi-Ram is in our possession now so we can actually do some mock up with the coils. There is plenty room to mount them underneath it. We just want to make sure that they are serviceable somewhat easily. Probably make a one piece removable shaft so they come out as a unit.

Some more major components have arrived. We haven't done a bagged shop project in a few years so this is kinda exciting. Ridetech triple adjustable shockwaves 5" travel front and 6" travel rear. Dual 3 gallon tanks, dual pumps and their pressure based ride control system.

So the thing about boost. It's just a measurement of restriction. Less restriction, more flow at a given pressure. On a naturally aspirated LQ4 these 230cc AFR heads would be overkill. I've already said too much. Those that know me, know the direction this is headed.

We finally got the frame rails back from sandblasting. Well......they only baked it apparently. Anyways, waited this long so we are moving on.

One of the guys in the shop mentioned that we had a chassis dolly in storage. He thought it was sturdy enough to build a temporary fixture out of so we took a few guys down there and grabbed it. Sure enough, this thing is a monster and honestly I am kinda glad that it is short. This way I can place the cab and bed on it if need be. Will come in handy with doing a body drop. ;)

I had to install a CPP driveshaft loop because the stock one would interfere with the chassis dolly.

August 2017

I am finally back in town so it's time to make some real progress. I spent my lunch today tracing and cutting one of the rear boxing plates. It's sucks that I had to cut it with the hand held plasma vs. the hi-def but I can't wait for R&D to draw the plate(they're super busy finishing up the squarebody 4-Link).

So basically what we have done is give the rear suspension an extra 3.5" of travel. The bottomed out height before is where the new set up will be at ride height. I left the rail height at 6" at the step so there is plenty of strength for towing.

Dimensionally I am pretty happy with the outcome. Side to side height is perfect and front to back placement are within 1/32". I am off .25 degree of vertical on the driver side(should have cross braced it before the heat). I've still got work to do on it cosmetically though.

August was a busy month of shows so not much progress has been made.

The boxing plates are slowly coming along though.

Braced the top of the step and cut the stock frame piece out.

Got some cool(errr hot) parts ordered this week. :mm: No picture tease yet but parts are on the way. Getting real close to engine/tranny mock up.

The frame is absolutely ugly right now but the fitment is pretty darn good. Had to section the top and bottom(note the cut) in order to pull the outer wall of the frame into the step. Still have to clean it up before laying down a bead.

http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/TotalCostInvolved/C10/20170906_074510_zps6fjtbgrk.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20170906_074510_zps6fjtbgrk.jpg.html)

I wanted to add a little extra bracing inside the frame rail where the front shock mounts. Main reason is our engine mounts triangulate the frame and the crossmember but I am setting the engine back. It's just a piece of 1x2.120w tubing

http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/TotalCostInvolved/C10/20170913_094056_zps22wrtvfz.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20170913_094056_zps22wrtvfz.jpg.html)

Started working on the front boxing plates. I cut the driver side with the handheld plasma like I did the rears. Once it fit I used that as the tamplate for the passenger side. There will be a filler plate added to the top of the rail to close the gap.

So about 5:30 last night I'm in the shop and Ed(Owner of TCI) comes walking out of his office. I'm sitting on a short stool inside the cab just staring at the dash contemplating things. Ed says "You know, when I was building my Mustang I wish I would have cut the dash out. It would have made my life much easier". That was all I needed to hear. I grabbed a sharpie and started marking it up. Removed the few retaining bolts and fired up the plasma cutter. I left a one inch flange to attach the replacement dash to later.

http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/TotalCostInvolved/C10/20171004_172738_zpssem8ihqu.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20171004_172738_zpssem8ihqu.jpg.html)

With the dash out it became very clear to me how the tunnel and firewall should be cut. I knew I wanted to push the engine back, I just didn't know how much.

http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/TotalCostInvolved/C10/20171005_070834_zps1yfaomjx.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20171005_070834_zps1yfaomjx.jpg.html)

So I took some measurements and rigged up a floor mounted fixture to use as a guide with the plasma cutter and went to town.

http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/TotalCostInvolved/C10/20171005_075542_zps5pntcf7z.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/20171005_075542_zps5pntcf7z.jpg.html)

Once you exceed 3-4" of setback things start to get interesting (difficult). However, once you go beyond 3-4" it's not much different to go 10-12" vs. 6". In the position below the engine is back 10" from the factory location.

Apologies for the ignorance. I know it's good to have the engine pushed back a ways rather than hanging way out in front of the vehicle, but is there extra benefit to having half of it inside the cab?

Excited to see the work on this truck!

You'd be surprised how little moving the engine back 3-4" effects weight distribution. At least with a lightweight LS based engine and a long wheelbase vehicle such as this. Moving a battery from the front to the back can have more an effect.

We have a few different sets of headers sitting around the shop we use for mock up. Of all the ones I tried our own off the shelf headers fit the best. Mainly because the rear cylinder primaries go forward slightly before going down. This actually allowed me to move the engine back another 2.5"(12.5" total) with relative ease. I had to raise the engine in order to keep the pans(engine & tranny) above the bottom of the frame anyway. It had to go up over an inch(too much) in order to keep the transmission tabs off the tunnel. Now I've got clearance issues with the intake manifold. Next week I'll trim the tunnel a little more where the tranny tabs are interfering so I can bring the engine down roughly 1/2". This may or may not be enough to clear the intake manifold again.

Needless to say if the engine stays this far back I will have a constant foot warmer.

Haven't made much progress lately. Ed and I have been discussing the chassis center section and engine placement at length. There is no physical way to lower the engine in place so we've decided to build a removable lower section of the chassis. It will have 6 attachment points and allow the body/chassis to be lowered over the top of it. I've built this over and over in my head so many times that I get disappointed when I walk into R&D and see that it isn't physically built yet. I should start on it today though.

Much like the engine placement, cab placement is still up in the air. I had read and spoke to a few C10 builders that if you body drop .75" the bottom of the pinch weld will be dead even with the bottom of the frame. That's not the case on this truck. I am currently using our Camaro 3/8" spacers(which are roughly.75" less than the stock rubber mounts) between the cab and frame mounts and the pinch weld is still well below the bottom of the frame. On top of that the rear of the cab is lower than the front, using the frame as reference. This kind of works to my advantage though. I had kinda wanted to tilt/rake the whole body down a degree or two in the front. My plan is to make the bottom of the cab parallel to the bottom of the frame.

All of that means that the core support bushings will also need to be modified to assume the new angle. This pic is with roughly 1" less thickness.

http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae297/TotalCostInvolved/C10/IMG_20171025_161837_001_zps2eeuwfbr.jpg (http://s981.photobucket.com/user/TotalCostInvolved/media/C10/IMG_20171025_161837_001_zps2eeuwfbr.jpg.html)

I was at a stand still with cab placement because I wanted the pinch weld rolled up flat. I'm an OCD photog so i've seen way to many good looking trucks be ruined by the pinch weld.

Still plugging away on the center section. Built the main tranny hoop and tied it in with some downbars. It is just tacked in place at this time. I still need to throw the cab back on to confirm placement. It'll make sense why the tubes are on top of the frame once the cab is back on.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2017/12/01/20171201_0756221.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/aroH)

I still need to make a couple tabs to close out the round tube on top of the frame.

We will likely try both the Vue/Equinox and the Prius boxes. The Vue/Equinox appears to be more robust but has some "On Center" concerns. The Prius might be the easiest to adapt but just not sure of longevity under this much load.

I had hinted at why the chassis cross bars were mounted above the frame rails earlier. The cab has two raised areas in the floor that the tubes line up with. This allows maximum exhaust clearance through the center section. Might even try to incorporate additional cab mounts and seat mounts into them. If you've been paying attention you've seen a couple different pics of engine set back options. I think "The Sweet Spot" has been found, see pic for measurement.

Getting the cab and bed perfectly aligned has proven to be next to impossible without bedsides. Started cutting up these brand new bed sides so we can raise the bed floor.

It's kinda hard to see what's going on here. This is the piece that was cut and removed from the bed side. It is now mounted into position on the bed floor. The driver side will be the same except where the gas filler is currently mounted.

My small piece of advice on EPAS is to use the most robust u-joints you can find in the steering shaft post-EPAS. I wore out some nice woodward joints very quickly. I notice the Borgeson joints are one size larger so they might be fine. I didn't get a chance to confirm as I converted over to a Ron Sutton setup with a new Sweet hydraulic rack. I had hydraboost so I wasn't able to drop the P/S pump anyway.

But the Vue box worked well for me otherwise on 285's on the front of a '68 Mustang although I never put stickies on it or took it on course while I had it.

Good to know, thanks. We normally use Borgeson joints but I will certainly discuss it with them. How was your "on center" feel? That was my only concern with the Vue box after reading up about them.

The rotating assembly and valvetrain is good for 7500. It will likely nose over around 6500 with the smallish turbines. Hoping to run about what your car does in the 1/2 mile. In order to do that on the 315 Falkens it will need a 3.25 gear spinning 7K (3rd gear figuring a locked converter).

On a sidenote: How much power does your FD make at the wheels? That car has gotta be so much fun on the street.

Slowly making progress on mounting the bed sides. I cut a fairly big strip out first and then just trimmed little by little in order not to cut too much. It is a long process but the fitment was perfect. The goal was to keep the factory internal bed body lines for looks and strength. Just kinda sandwiched them closer together. The inner panel will require a little more work once I get the main structure together.

Been trying to get the bed back to a solid piece for safe removal. Made some closeout panels for the outer structure and fitted them up this morning.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/03/05/20180305_080230.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/X0IMm)

Made a cardboard template (oversized of course so I could trim to fit)

.050" panel cut and ready

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/03/05/20180305_080338.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/X0kGP)

So I kinda skipped a picture/step here. I cut a few slits in the lip and rolled the edge before laying the new panel in place. The top is butt welded, the bottom is laid inside of the lip.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/03/05/20180305_125805.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/X0dYN)

This should at least hold the structure in place so I can remove the bed, disassemble and fully weld on a bench (comfortably).

Slowly getting to the rear suspension. The Torque Arm will work as is, with slight modification to the cab. The link arms will need to be shortened. We're not going to use this 12 bolt but it already has the bracketry so it helps with mock up. The problem is the 12 bolt is roughly 1/2" shorter at the pumpkin than a 9" so I have to account for that.

From this angle you can see that the axle bracket hangs to far behind the axle. We need to bring the flange area closer to the back of the axle tube to gain clearance for the panhard bar.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/04/02/20180322_132928.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/ZXdI3)

I've hinted at the idea that there won't be much room under the hood. The radiator is roughed in. It's likely too wide, since at current placement the tire will actually interfere at full lock. Once the inner panels are constructed there really won't be much room at all. The cardboard box is a rough intercooler size. Dual inlets, one on each top/side, with a center outlet on the bottom that goes under the radiator. Radiator fan outlets will be routed out of the hood.

I feel so scatter brained lately. I seem to be jumping from project to project. I started removing the drip rails and then ran into a little problem. So I moved back to finish welding the bed.

I had planned on doing the drip rail removal a small section at a time. This helps keep the roof structure from distorting. I worked the door areas first and all went pretty easily. Unfortunately, when I cut the front section I realized real quick that the roof skin doesn't line up with the windshield surround. Basicaly, the roof skin overhangs the windshield surround by roughly 3/16". So I went ahead and cut that whole front portion of the drip rail off. I now plan to do a small pie cut on the sides and will lay the roof skin down a little at the front to smooth out the 3/16" difference.

We've been working on rear suspension mock up. The 12 bolt display rearend we had was too wide so we built a mock rearend that is 55" wide housing flange to housing flange and 60" wide axle flange to axle flange. We also had to cut some special axle brackets(similar to our Muscle Car Torque Amr brackets) with a 25 degree angle.

After posting these pics on FB, Bret Voelkel chimed in and said we shouldn't run the shockwaves upside down. Debris can find their way in between the sleeve and body and create leaks. So we may have to pocket the frame a little for bag clearance.

Time for the monthly update.

The first few pieces of this was accomplished with Tig because the Mig machine was being used by Ed on Ray Currie's F100. Needless to say I am no sheet metal guru and the Tig added a level of complication due to awkward positioning.

Before, just a big gaping hole.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/10/18/20181002_105251.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/O5ATR)

I skipped a couple pics during this 4 step process. one flat panel, and 3 strip pieces to cover the frame crossover tube.

Making room for the driveshaft. This part was a little more involved than the previous steps. Plasma cut the back of the floor out but there is a cross brace underneath. I had to put myself in the path of the plasma overspray to get to a couple areas.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/10/18/20181008_120854.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/O5juY)

I had considered adding an access panel here for Torque Arm adjustments. Changed my mind once I realized that once the interior and seats were in there it would be a pita anyway.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2018/10/18/20181008_142841.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/O5n7o)

This piece had the same curvature as the previous panel. There's more than enough room for even a 4" driveshaft.

So project #Ctwin is gaining some junkyard parts. After a bunch of measuring and online dimension searching I headed to the Ontario Pick-A-Part with reciprocating saw in hand.

There are 3 variants of the Astro Van engine cover. Early, mid & late. I chose the mid year because of it's larger opening and thick construction.

There were a bunch of vans to choose from. Luckily I found a very clean example and began cutting it up.

Doing a little prelim fitment check. It's pretty darn close as is. The under side of the dash will need to be raised slightly. That will allow the engine cover to move forward against what will eventually be a new firewall. There will be some serious consideration here for dash design. The cover must be able to be removed easily. Which will be no easy task once there are seats in place. Initial thoughts include designing a hinged center to the dash that lifts up and away. Another thought is to have two separate dashes (driver/passenger) and then have a removable center console that mates up against the dash/engine cover that is also easily removable.

I finished up Episode 2 last night.

I cover getting the chassis out of the fixture, building the rear suspension, mounting the cab, taking it to the Brothers Truck Show and beginning the diffuser design.

My fears were confirmed. The Holley High-Ram intake will not clear the Astrovan Doghouse.

Realizing that the manifold would need to be changed I started grafting this Astrovan doghouse to the tunnel & floor.

I am not ready to close out the firewall yet. I've got a plan for up there but I need to mount Ed's wheels again and cycle the steering at full compression. I'm looking to gain some forward foot space without encroaching on tire clearance.

I mentioned that the Holley High-Ram won't clear. We ended up changing to the Sniper Race Series. The only problem there is the inlet is 90mm. So I spent some time opening it up to 102 to match the throttle body.

I was gonna suggest you just mount the cup holder that all true pro-touring cars have to the back of the engine and leave it exposed, but I see you already covered it up. Keep up the good work.

I have every excuse in the world as to why this thing is taking so long. Lack of motivation isn't one of them. I am really trying to stick with one small project at a time. The biggest hurdle as of late has been the firewall. I wanted to remove the rain gutter and make a solid flat panel. I also wanted to change the angle of the toe boards at the same time. This was kind of an afterthought from mocking up a driver's seat and realizing the forward footwell space was limited. The problem of course is making sure there is plenty of tire clearance. My major hold up has been deciding the tire overall diameter. I finally just put a limit of 28" and moved forward.

Paper cutouts of the new firewall pieces. In order to make working with them easier I kept them in two pieces.

Initial mock up. Lots of trimming and fitting. I left a little extra because I figured after bead rolling it would shrink/warp in some areas.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190418_124613.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/haruS)

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190418_124627.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/haMe5)

Made a pretty simple design for the bead roll.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190419_125355.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/hWK6Z)

& spent some time at lunch today rolling some beads. This was my first time using one so I took a bunch of practice swipes with some spare pieces. The plan is to drill some holes about 1.5" in from the perimeter for rosette welds. The toe boards will just be bent up into place and welded/trimmed.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190422_130158.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/hqQiH)

Here is a side view of the toe boards. IMO the old toe board angle is where the pedals should have been from the factory. With the new floor angle that shouldn't be a problem.

https://i.hmjimg.com/images/2019/04/22/20190418_124726.md.jpg (https://www.hostmyjunk.com/image/haFzZ)

Our buddy Andy 'The Nova Guy' Mule found a LS7 oil pan & pump at the Pleasanton Goodguys. I hadn't planned on going dry sump for cost reasons but I couldn't pass this up knowing that Ed has a spare oil tank.

Since the beginning we had plans to run a Dakota Digital dash. I just kept hesitating because we also have a Holley dash. Once I realized that the Dakota harness is a pass thru and that I could stash the Holley somewhere else I pulled the trigger.

HDX-2200 will work out well in a universal situation. I also nabbed two 2000psi pressure sensors so we can monitor front/rear brake pressure and adjust accordingly via a prop valve mounted near the driver. We will also run twin widebands as well.

A little progress on the firewall. Also made some tabs for the tranny crossmember so it will unbolt and drop out from the bottom. Turns out the 4L80 I used for mock up had a different (more shallow) pan on it. The current pan hangs about .5" lower which means the engine had to go forward and up. Will be making the engine crossmember next.

Made dual battery trays, mounted the Derale tranny cooler, mounted both compressors & tanks. Wired up the Ridetech Pro-X controller so we could cycle the truck at the Brothers Show this past weekend.

This is Fred, he does all of our brake & air lines on our chassis. He's routing the 1/4" lines from the distribution block to the tanks.

After the Brothers Truck show we dropped the truck off at Doug's Headers. They built us some easily removable 1.75" primary, mid length headers and 2.5" mid pipes for it. We kept the tubing smaller for better velocity.

We just started mocking up the Magnaflow 3.5" I/D mufflers yesterday. They will be tight up against the Derale coolers so we'll build a small heat shield there.

We also began mocking up the Wilwood tandem brake pedal assy. I wanted the pedal as high as possible so we could get the most ratio possible. As it sits we're at about 9:1. The dash will make servicing the master interesting. Will likely make the dash top pin on for easy removal. I'm still not sure what the gas pedal will look like and whether it will be pull or push yet. The throttle body will be rotated 180 degrees from normal so the cable can go right down the valley. The problem is that the valley is behind the pedal. So the cable will have to go back and around the Astrovan cover and up into the valley.

We've had a few different sets of wheels on the truck to get it around the shop. These are some that we borrowed from Schott for another display chassis. They're 18's & 20's with way too tall of a tire so it doesn't lay frame with them.

What are you doing with all the free real-estate in the engine bay? I was expecting to see some crazy 8 into 1 headers with a turbo up there!

It'll be mostly inner fenders, radiator (laid over 45 degrees), and radiator tubing (outlets thru hood).
