View Full Version : LS3 FOX Mustang track car

Long story short ... it's not typical Lateral G spec, but it's got the spec LS swap. :D
Right place, right time, right body, right safety parts, and the right engine.
Bought for pennies on the dollar for what it cost to put together. Know all the local builders/installers of the car and its parts.
Got sick of watching all my buddies have fun at Sonoma and Thunderhill and just being a spectator.
Untested and untuned in its current configuration I shook it down at the Shelby Club Mini Nats last month.
Great parts list. Cortex and Griggs suspension. Stoptech front brakes. Top notch roll cage. Maier wide body and front end pieces. Custom splitter and G Stream wing. And to top it off a Turnkey Engines LS3. I don't think I would buy a Fox without a GM engine in it. :)
Sonoma was a blast and the only carnage was 5 splitter rods which killed 2 of my 5 sessions but
Good power. Light weight. Aero. This thing is a damn rocket. It's been awhile .. so if the driver can catch up to the car's potential we might have something here.
More to come...

Dam that's light. I wish I could shed 400 lbs off AO and get to that weight.
Low weight, good brakes, lots of tire, lots of hp, proven AIX components and legit aero there doesn't seem to be any excuse to not be fast.
Enjoy.

It actually came with a very nice Sparco EVO passenger seat installed. But no belts for it so I popped it out and mounted the Traqmate box I'd had for the Camaro right in that spot. I'd like to put it back in at some point.

Then say something funny -- "fun" is one thing -- just being a smart ass is another. Lest it's just an "ego" exercise - and if you try to climb someone else's back to boost your ego you just piss people off. Constructive comments -- constructive criticism (provided the comments are supported by someone that's actually doing, or knowledgeable, instead of just watching) is welcome. I get my ass handed to me every time I come off track by Sutton.... But he actually knows what he's talking about. He's not trying to be a keyboard warrior.
It's just like the comments about the lap times. You just look stupid if you don't actually know what you're talking about.

Of course I am not as fast as Greg right now (driver or car) but that is perfectly fine. I shouldn't be either with all the seat time and hours and cubic dollars of Sutton development. :)
And it doesn't matter one bit. I had a blast ripping around in this car at Sonoma. So blessed that it is my home track at only 1 hour away. If only more of the Shelby Club participants didn't think they were running Nascar. I will be trying out some other local groups as there are many.
Greg is a very capable driver I have come to find out. Up until recently he didn't give himself very much credit.

THAT is the point I wish everyone that does this stuff would get. This is not spec class racing, where it's all about the driver. These cars are all completely different.
Go out -- drive to your ability (at the time) -- and enjoy the entire process -- fixing -- learning -- dicing -- dreaming -- and spending time with your buddies.
I'm so impressed with Rob's driving -- because he's running with me despite being down 200+ HP.... I'm not saying that I'm fast so he must be good.... I'm saying that the two cars are a mile apart HP wise --- so he's making up time in the corners and elsewhere despite me being able to out drag race him in the straights. The cars are a mile apart - I have HP - He has aero - he has some serious talent and it shows. A little more seat time and some suspension tweaks - and I'll be following him around. THE KEY is that we have a blast. Not another single thing matters.
The Porsche guy didn't come up to us and say how fast he normally is -- or was -- or that his car is this and he's all that...... He came up to us excited about having had so much fun! Period. His wife was excited because she saw that we were having a blast. Anyone that's done this knows what I'm talking about. It's not about the size of your balls.
I HOPE that Daves' new car works out and he gets some seat time in the car.... figures out what He needs to do, or what the car needs (maybe nothing) and he finds enough days to get out on track. Well -- not too many -- I don't want him running 1:59's too soon.... I got to get that new car built and quick!!! LOL

LOL.. That's hilarious.
You might not remember it was so many years ago... first time... new car... new track... Sonoma.... pretty intimidating! And add 45 cars per group with the Shelby Club... there is a LOT going on....
my favorite part of the weekend (and when I knew sh!t was REAL) was the red plus and green drivers meeting.... nearly 100 guys... they ask for a show of hands of who has NOT driven the track ..... no one raises their hand. LOL. Well I sure as hell was not going to be the only one raising my hand in there.

Good on you for finally putting this up, Dave. Participation is everything, so long as what you're participating in is not so boring that you start having conversations with your passenger going full throttle around Thunderhill (what happens in cop car).
Now that I've said this, I can say that I've been doing my best to ignore my junk for a little while here, and you punks keep getting me all excited again . . .
Try not to overheat the thing again. My kart likes this so little that it blew its stupid little head gasket. My garage is mechanically desperate right now.
Oh, and what's with the Swiss cheese lightening efforts around all of that structural sheetmetal under the hood? The Boss 302 toughening guide suggests doing the exact opposite (looks like what they used to do to kids' BMX bikes in the old days for racing) . . .:newbie:

See ------ here's a guy that can come in and snipe at Dave or I - or Rob - HE actually takes his days off and comes out to hang with us and give us crap face to face. Can't tell you how many times Paul has turned out just to bang on us.
Sorry to hear about the golf kart - er - I meant Go Kart.... hope it's just a simple gasket.
DAVE --- I remember Lillard telling me at the first driver meeting ''sit down -- don't talk - and don't raise your hand - and don't ask any questions". LOL
I think I have a video somewhere -- he's helping me get in the car -- telling me not to be a dumbass - to check my gauges - to take it easy - and then, of course - I hadn't put in the hood pins...... I think the video shows him flipping me off as he fixes that...
Greatest thing I ever did --- hire Ron to fix the car, and coach me, and make sure I don't do dumb things --- like he's always reminding me -- KEEP YOUR EYES UP etc -- and that stuff really helps!!

I only bring up the list because sometimes it's needed. That Andy fellow has the Lotus and a wicked fast Corvette. He also has, as I understand it, a ton of seat time....and a list posted on his steering wheel.
I noticed you've got an unmarked switch on your control panel, is the accusump a solenoid valve or a manual ball?
Take it for what it's worth.
I've been around a roadcourse a total of 4 times.....as a passenger. I know nothing other than how to help get guys ready to go out. PRO3, SpecE46, Optima or these track days. Right now for me, it's the people I get to hang with.

I remember my first track event at thunderhill many years
back. We had our drivers meeting in a metal roof bldg when
it was raining so hard you could hardly hear what they were saying
They asked how many had non treaded tires and over half of us rose our
hands. They gave everyone the option to use their SUV or other car
I brought my race car so I was going to run it. I had everything with
Treaded tires passing me almost all day Saturday. On Sunday it stopped raining about 1pm I finally could get the car to speed, smell some brakes and see what my mustang could do. Lots of fun but a lot of tip toeing around the track for most of the weekend. You really had to learn throttle and brake control
Been hooked ever since then
Good to hear you guys are running your cars and having fun
I want to join you guys once i finally heal up

The list is smart I agree. Just one more thing to not be a potential fail. I will give myself one more track day to get the routine down on my own. :)
There is one available switch -- I thought about adding the traqmate but we will see if that's a mainstay. I have the manual switch with the pull handle right on the passenger side of the tunnel. I like the manual vs electric... one less thing to go wrong, assuming no "driver error."

Yo, Dave, a quick favor: Does your LS3 have a Mass Air Flow sensor? If you're not sure, just start at your throttle body, then work to the air filter. If there's no wired connection in there, you're speed density. If there's a wire, you probably have a MAF, or at least one being used for the air temp measurement (IAT). The reason I ask is that I'm contemplating a speed density tune to get the stupid Falcon running tolerably. Thanks!

Thanks for looking, Dave! I'll be plying some severely amateur HP Tuners tuning very soon, as speed density seems to be favored by those who actually whoop on their stuff, whereas MAF tunes seem to be preferred by the cruiser set. I've not built a cruiser. The internet gets you to at least "enthusiast" status with anything very quickly . . .:computer:

Be careful there buddy ---- lots of folks have decided to be tuners and ruined motors and they're gone in a hurry! Glazed cylinders - washed out rings - and lean burned up ring lands etc.

3) Have fun

After running LS I do think I could get into the high 1:30's with some more time there. Not having to lift for the sound meter was a nice bonus!

Better shoot for mid 1:40's ----- NASA club records show a 1:34 in a '99 Corvette and that record hasn't been broken in FIVE YEARS....
LOL
Mid 1:40's will put you in RECORD territory at Laguna Seca in the TT (Time Trials division). That's some of the best amatuer drivers on the west coast. Just sayin'

There were so many cars in the 1:30's when I was out there I lost count.... apparently there are some fast drivers/cars that don't run NASA! Go figure!

So Dave, do you know whose cradle or K member is in your car to install the LS motor ?
Thanks

Yes, there is an epic thread on Corvette Forum about every LS3 ever driven on a road course has or will blow up.
A dry sump is the best method of course but pretty expensive.
Mine system is made up of an Accusump, Kevko road race oil pan, and remote oil filter. Has been fine so far. At least when I remember to open the valve before each session. :sieg:

What's the prognosis on the clutch? The pedal clearly stopped playing an active role in the game . . .
If it makes you feel better, my truck's water pump gave up yesterday (no towing was involved). It'll cost me nearly $60.00 to fix. Dang it.

Was the clutch pedal to the floor with zero resistance or was pressure noticeable and just won’t engage a gear?
Hopefully it’s an easy cylinder swap or TOB....if not, it may be time to swap the SB2 and dog box. :bigun2:

Mark I am guessing you ran your Monster RX7 there?
I had another red RX-7 widebody with 18x12's at all corners, JRZ triples, 2470lbs wet with detuned 438 stroker LS7 (stock LS3 heads and made only 530rwhp to try to meet power/weight rules), GForce GSR dogbox, and 3.27 gears in a Cobra IRS 8.8" diff with custom axles running the RX-7 suspension out back. It had an ARE dry sump system. My first time at Laguna ever I ran a 1:35.5 with it... my buddy who built the car ran a 1:33 flat and said there was a lot more left. Also broke the GSR dogbox by not fully engaging reverse and sheared the teeth off it... We ended up tearing down the box at the track.... cleaned it up... removed reverse and ran it another couple sessions.
Sadly after running the 1:35.5 a couple laps later the bolt from the dry sump pump walked off... allowed the pulley to move... which then made the belt fall off.... so I seized the motor. That was an expensive day! Cameron Rogers now campaigns the car in TTU I believe. It's gray now....

Only real issue was when I killed it too many times getting ready to get on track for 1st session that I overcooked the battery on the starting grid and had to get towed back to the paddock for a jump.

It's so shocking that the GT would be driven like a hot dog cart; god forbid somebody's buns might fall off. I still have fond memories of that green Viper at Thunderhill that provided a similar experience--good thing he'd "upgraded" the thing in various ways before hitting the track. It looked faster parked. We do live in the era of the participation trophy, however . . .
Buy some real tires, like with treads or something. After doing so, avoid trailer burnouts for a more respectable life cycle. My Nitto NT05s work great, so long as 80% of my brakes aren't biased to the rear.

I must say driving in 3 sessions of combined HPDE4 and TT -- with nearly 100 cars on track -- it was a blast and forced you to be absolutely aware and on your game at all times. It was so much FUN and great track experience. Best weekend I've had. Hanging with Greg and all of the mutual friends made it obviously so much better.
Did get 2 or 3 clean laps during the HPDE4 only sessions and improved my PB by 2 seconds so that was nice.
Anyway, I will be running TT1 class in September it looks like. Maybe that slow orange 69 Camaro of Gaetano will show up finally. :action-smiley-027:
