Hey guy's,
Just read http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/project-cars/1701-mark-stielow-takes-a-different-approach-to-his-latest-1969-camaro/
And came over figuring it'd be started already and i might get a bit more, but didnt find anything?
Has it been started on here yet or not? If so, care to show me the way?
Thanks,
Lead.

I would guess that because things are being covered in a magazine, there will be minimal posts about it. They still have to sell issues right?
Here's to hoping I'm wrong.

Funny, I was thinking the same when I saw this topic two days ago.
If Mark was feeling really generous, he could post more detailed stuff for us hardcore types AFTER the content hit the magazine. Just saying... :D

I get what you guys are saying, but most of his cars make the magazines. He's thrown up quite a few build threads of the others, so why is this one different?
Again, I'm hoping that Charlie, or even Mark himself will chime in.

What I read was in simple terms DSE frame and suspension, big brakes, and all the other goodies without the paint &body work they are trying to portray a "simple" build that the average joe could build without again the paint & body price tag....
If anyone has heard differently please correct me.

And..... This one is targeting moderate (650) HP goals vs. one-upping the previous build(s).

I was sort of hoping there would be a build thread here as well. Magazine builds are so stripped down they offer almost nothing but pretty pictures and we know and love most of the vendors already. I love Mark's builds and frequently "borrow" his good ideas. Learning about the engine would be really cool. I am sure a lot of thought has to go into that!
Plus, I am sort of protesting Super Chevy because I am still stinging from the cancellation of Camaro Performers. They still send "bait" e-mails that say Camaro Performers but when you open them it is just Super Chevy. Sort of irritated me I guess!

I did start a build tread on this car but stopped because I am building it up with Chevrolet High Performance Magazine. I have not done a magazine build up in a long time so I thought it would be fun. So far it has been. I purchased the green beauty off Charley Lillard after talking him into purchasing it off EBay.
The car has a super cool original paint with a DX1 strip. The two super long lead things on a build are paint and engine builds. So I thought why not do a pintina car with a crate engine. I have been able to drive a bunch on LT4 powered GM vehicles and love the way that engine works. The ZL1 fixed all the cooling issues and that car hauls and does not get hot.
This car is for fun and not an effort to win Optima. I had a great run at Optima but I'm done chasing it for now.
I will add a build tread on this project after it runs on line or in print in CHP.
I feel the LT4 will be a popular swap soon. There are a few tech issue to work out and I'll publish / post them when I sort it out. The original build will be a stock LT4 but we are already looking at performance mods.

Thx for the update, it does seem curious that there hasn't been a lot of builds to reference regarding an LT4 crate install as it has been out for a while now.
I know of the Ironworks Fairway Camaro and the Forgeline 2nd Gen and another 1st gen over at Smittys Custom Chris is working on incorporating the LT4 - but so far no real world post install drivability results. I wonder if the cooling issues in the Corvette or these tech issue you speak off has put a damper on more projects incorporating the LT4.Tell the other Jason to stay away from this one lol

Now I am not sure which car I will like more your new 69 or Gordon's 67.
Quick question on the ABS is it a stand alone system that anyone can buy or are you piecing it together with your knowledge of the system ?

I pieced together the system myself based on a 2006 - 2007 Corvette Delphi system. If you trick the module to think it is still in a Corvette it will work. I did a custom cal To remove all base chassis controls and traction control. I used the same system in Red Devil and Mayhem. Before a get a ton of questions about it I do not want to give out the cal due to the complexities of the system. It took me 2 years to get it to work flawlessly on Red Devil. I do this stuff as a hobby and don't mind helping some people but I feel the custom ABS stuff and wiring maybe over most peoples head. Also the failure modes are bad.

That is what I thought and I understand the complexity and it is way above my knowledge base. Just impressed that you were able to create a working system in a vintage car.

Don
Don, you are correct. My lawyer told me if I want to keep my house don't sell this system..... During development on this system it failed 20 during testing.
Bosch makes a system but cost around $7000 not counting the hardware. I used the Delphi stuff because I had some left over parts.
Custom ABS module
Custom wheel bearing to get the Pre-2009 non active wheel speed sensors
Custom axle ends to allow a Corvette ZR1 wheel bearing with a built in wheel speed sensor. Now a few companies sell the axle ends like Detroit Speed.
So if you want ABS the best way to go today is the Bosch stuff with production ZR1 wheel bearings.

Does the OEM LT-4 Dry Sump pan work with a factory subframe or is an aftermarket version required?
Thanks!

Mark,
If you can elaborate (at this point), what you did for the fuel system? Additionally, does the FED fit into the subframe any better than your experiences with the LS7 / 9 combo?
Looking forward to seeing more. Always enjoyable to follow your builds.

The LS 7 pan and the dry sump LT4 pans are very close so from that data I would say the LT4 dry sump pan will not fit the stock Fist Gen Camar subframe. But, Holley is doing a LT wet sump pan that should fit.

The fuel system is fairly easy. The GM crate engine harness comes with a fuel engine pump controller. Use a Gen 5 ZL1 fuel pump in a Ricks tanks and your done.
On the FEAD we are using a Holley adaptor for the A/C. Then the DSE subframe need notched a little bit

Bag for the buck the LT4 is great. I feel it makes a solid 700 HP with headers and open exhaust. For about $14k you get engine, harness and controller with a cal. To build a LS7 that makes 700 HP you will be way over that and not have a warranty. Mine also idles at 650 RPM find a LS7 that will do that.
The Thomson 427 LS9 based engine are wicked. But will run around $40K. But if you want 900 HP and 900 Ft*lb they are the best. We have ran those very hard with NO issue. But we developed that package for 10 years.
I feel the LT4 program will get stronger over the years. The LS9s were only in Corvette ZR1s for 8 years. Not a lot of cars or spare parts. The LT4 is in stock in Corvette Z06s, ZL1 Camaros, ZL1-1LE Camaros and CTS-V Caddys and will be for a while. It is also available in wet sump and dry sump. I also have the luxury of seeing the future products. So I felt it was time to jump to the new engine.
Mine is all stock and works very well. (A stock LT4 powered a 3800 lb Camaro around the Nurburgring in 7:13, it also crushed the Car and Driver's Lightning Lap times) The Camaros have way better cooling than the Corvettes.
Now the downside. The LT4 is all new and we had to prototype:
Engine mount
Headers
A/C mount
Power Steering Mount
Trans Cross member (Same as LS)
I worked with Holley on all of that so Holley will have a kit in the spring.
The rad and intercooler package is from C&R racing. Top shelf parts and people, but not cheap.
Over all this is one of my favorite builds. No painters or engine builders so no drama. My only outside shop was Sled Alley and Matt did a killer job. Best guy I have ever worked with.
We have all been there where the painter or engine builder is saying "it will be ready in 2 weeks" or "we have more time in it than we thought we would". :warning:

The car is all tuned up ready to go to SEMA. If your going look for it in the Holley booth then OUSCI.
We had a chance to chassis dyno the car. It made great power for a stock engine with Hooker Headers, Large inlet tube and a Cal.

Mark,
Did you do any tuning at all? Or just use the Connect and Cruise kit with the factory tune? I am currently working with V8 Speed and Resto on swapping my 540 BBC over to a GenV LT4 and purchased the Connect and Cruise kit. I purchased the Ultimate Headers and Drive Junky kit for the Dry Sump LT4. Awesome build!

Mark,
I cannot say I can find what rear gear you chose. Was it the 3.25 you have used before? Curious if you duplicated OE in terms of cruise RPM.
Thanks,
Tim
I used a 3.5 rear axle gear ratio and at 80 MPH I'm at 2000 RPM in 0.5 6th gear.
1 - 5 are tight and 6th is a big overdrive.
My best mileage on the Goodguys Hall of Fame tour was 24 MPG rolling at 80.

Mark,
Did you do any tuning at all? Or just use the Connect and Cruise kit with the factory tune? I am currently working with V8 Speed and Resto on swapping my 540 BBC over to a GenV LT4 and purchased the Connect and Cruise kit. I purchased the Ultimate Headers and Drive Junky kit for the Dry Sump LT4. Awesome build!
Regards,
Larry
If you follow the instructions the calibration with the kit is very good. I did a custom induction tube, swapped to tilted supercharger bricks, Did the 2017 "Big Lid" and did a PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) fan. If you stay with a 4 inch induction tube it should work great.

Having followed this car for many 100's of miles..... I came to realize that in my humble opinion -- it was way cooler in it's natural patina than the three high zoot painted cars in the group..... That's not baggin on them at all - because I've never driven a car that I liked more than HellFire... It was just that this car is such a sleeper.... and to me that has an undeniable appeal. Once again "the man" has laid down tracks for others to follow.

Always fun to hang out with you. I hope to be chasing your '40 next year! Thanks for the kind words.
I had a lot of fun building this car but I kind of copied Gordon's Rojewski's blue Camaro. With out doing paint and custom engine build this projects can go fairly fast.

I used Stop Tech brakes on this car. I have used them before on Red Dehilnand they worked great. Iron rotors have more pad compounds available and do not need as much cooling as CCM. If you run CCM you NEED big cooling ducts.
The Stop Tech stuff is great. No issues. Great brake feel and they look great.

Nessy ---- the one that is / was on Gary's '32 Sedan is an ORIGINAL.... and they're ever so slightly different than the repops. So I had the original repaired and also modified the repop and sent them both to Ed.... he can choose which he wants to run on the car. I'm still searching for an original replacement.... So far - even Brizio can't find one.

Well hope Ed takes it easy on you - those Louisiana expansion joints were jarring.
This latest from Mark is plain Jane initially then whoosh - gone. great build/fit and finish - perhaps the Thompson motors prior to this led the way for LT4 development - amazing bang for buck motor - hey vendors hurry up with a swap kit already lol

The car developed a radiator leak on the way to SEMA. I chose not to try putting goo in the radiator. If it fixed it I would have to flush it out. If it did not work I still would need to fix it and flush it out.
The safest thing to do was bow out and fix it correctly.

Mark,
First of all Love your cars! Hope to see a DETAILED build on this car!
I am an the midst of installing an LT4 in a 71 Firebird. I see you went vacuum brake booster for the brakes. The instructions that came with the LT4 said use a vacuum pump as using a vacuum brake booster will have issues under boost?
What did you do? Pump or no Pump? If you used a pump which one did you use?
Thanks,
Stan

I see this.

Earlier in this thread there was a pic of what appeared to be -10? lines on the valve covers.
From what I can gather, GM ran a line from the air intake tube and a line from each valve cover to the dry sump tank. Is the Pro Vent on Gunner in line between the valve cover and tank or intake and tank?
......or is the Pro Vent the fresh air intake/blow off for the PCV system period.

The instructions are wrong. You don’t need a vacuum pump. The vacuum pump is for cold start on the stock car. So don’t park you car on a hill and deplete your booster and take off quickly on a 0 degree day and you will be fine....
It is Engineeringly correct yes. Do you have to have it with a stock LT4 with out cats. No.

I ran 2 -8 line off the valve covers and tee them together to a -10 line. That line goes to the top of the Peterson dry sump tank. Then a hose (I think 3/4) comes off the top of the tank to the Pro Vent 100 (3931070793). Then a -10 line comes off the Pro Vent to the inlet tube behind the MAF sensor.
I have experimented with the other Pro Vent 100 part numbers and that is the one that has worked for me.
The Pro Vent has a drain with a one way check valve that drains back into the dry sump tank. (I need to look up the part number it is a Mann &Hummel part)
The dry sump tank has been modified to add 4 extra quarts. This is so the oil level is not as critical because you are checking it with a dip stick.
I know it is a expensive system. But it works great. I’ve done this on 3 cars so far and I really like it. Keep the engine bay oil free and keeps the engine happy.
Hope this helps

Mann Hummel part no for the check valve is 2400843621.
That will works with Pro Vents 100/150/200.
Here is the catalog if anyone else wants it. https://www.mannfiltersrus.com/pub/media/catalogues-pdf/MANN_HUMMEL_Crankcase_Ventilation_EN.pdf
Now I have more questions, it appears that you only need the check valve if you are draining back above the oil level.....?
Oil return The respective port of the oil return (see diagram on page 15) is connected to the oil sump via a drainage pipe. There are two principal connection possibilities:
1. Below the oil level The oil return is connectedvia a drainage pipe below the minimum permissible oil level of the engine oil sump. According to the principle of connected pipes, the same oil level is present in the oil sump and the drainage pipe. This oil receiver acts like a siphon so that when the oil is sucked from the outlet port the blow-by is directed via the oil separator. The negative pressure in the oil return pipe during operation is the same as the negative pressure at the oil separator. As opposed to conventional solutions, this intake negative pressure is reduced due to design considerations so that the height of the oil column in the drainage pipe during operation is accordingly low. As a result the drainage pipe need only take into account a respectively low oil column and this enables numerous installation possibilities.
2. Above the oil level This connection variation requires fitting of a check valve which is available as an option. The valve is fitted in the drainage pipe is close to the engine as possible. Separated oil collects above the check valve during operation. The check valve is closed during operation by the negative suction pressure present in the housing of the ProVent. When the weight of the oil column is above the closing pressure of the valve, for example when the engine has been switched off, the separated oil flows back to the oil sump.
If we plumb the Pro Vent as Mark described in the clean side, between the air intake and the dry sump tank, which way is the air flowing? Normal operation, fresh air flows through the air filter, past the MAF, into a hose through the Pro Vent and into the tank. No need for an air oil separator in situation.
Under heavy load, that air flow reverses, out of the tank into the Pro Vent up the hose and into the intake tube. We don't want oil there at all.
Do we follow the arrows on the pro vent for for the former or the latter?
This may become painfully obvious when I hold it in my hand.
Thanks again!

Thanks for posting the catalog. I also have other questions that will require some thought. I am using a large, 5-stage pump that will pull a lot of vacuum. The pump manufacturer suggested I use a vacuum regulator (available from Peterson) to control the vacuum at 12-14 hgM. I am concerned that if I ever reached a positive crankcase pressure situation (my engine builder says I won't) there would be no pressure relief and I might blow oil through the seals. Peterson also makes a check valve designed to release pressure (back to the tank) for that condition, but I'm not sure I need it. My motor goes on the dyno Thursday so maybe I will get a better feel for how I should proceed after I see what the crankcase vacuum looks like. Any thoughts from you or Mark? Thanks
Pappy

I'm glad you guys are getting this figured out for me so it makes my job easier when I'm ready to install this.
I did call Sled alley a while back and asked them if they could build me the dry sump tank to match Mark's and they said I'd need to send them my car, but would be more than happy to.
