And here are some more renderings without a spoiler and with a Trans am spoiler.

I'm liking the modern chin spoiler from the other pics but just not sure. Comments...http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160915/56099025004134a2abfffbcd32a9e869.jpg

Love the first rendering! They all look great, that's just my favorite! The only thing I would change is to keep the original style snorkels, I love those snorkels!

I like the take on the 69 T/A meets 71/72 GTO hood scoops- that's a really sharp design!
As much of a fan as I am of T/A's(and their aero components), I prefer the first drawing for a fresh take on what a Formula can be.

One more rendering. I think this is it! Thoughts on the color matched splitter?

Anyone have any power train ideas? It will definitely not be naturally aspirated 😉

The color matched chin splitter subdues the effect somewhat, where the black emphasizes it and makes it more bold. I think keep it black and then add a black stripe around the entrance of the snorkels and perhaps an accent black line around the rear spoiler...

I agree with Greg the 1st rendering is the way to go.

Cool looking project! I'm digging the rendering! l personally like look of the black or dark argent on frt. splitter. I'm also liking the the flared frt. fenders and qtr. panels! Guess I'm partial to that because of our second gen!

Looking back and learning from past builds I would definitely do thing differently. Since your car is a 2nd gen and I have a little bit of experience with this. I would do a plug and play LS Engine & Trans and a complete bolt on front suspension.

As for the rear suspension I would seriously consider the leaf spring options that are out there which would lower the car just enough to look nice.

Do the rear outer wheelhouse modification so you could tuck the taller rear tire.

Afco LS 2nd Gen Radiator
Vintage Air
28" tall 275 for the rear
25" tall 255 for the front.

Keep it simple and be done in less the a year and have a ton of money left over to cruise the car to all the places you want to.

Marty brings up some great points. Yeah, I'm biased because it's a similar path to what I'm already taking, but I truly recommend it. I'm still running leafs in the back of my car. It rides well and sits well. It is a little jarring when the back goes over a bump compared to the front, but it's not terrible. It goes through corners great. Check out John's, NotATA, #14 car build. He runs a simple bolt together suspension and has been for many years with lots of track time.

Forgot to ask earlier, why the choice of late 2nd gen formula scoops and not the early ones? I believe the early ones actually work if I'm not mistaken.

Love rendering one. I think the single stripe would look good. However, the last rendering with everything one color is nice as well. In general, I prefer a spoiler on the rear of a 2nd gen. They look naked without one.

Good luck regardless.

Go with the composite leafs and good shocks and you may find the rear suspension is more supple than the front. I know I did.

All
Thanks so much for the input. All of this is helpful to a newbie like me.
So I'm definitely going with a crate option for power instead of "modernizing" the old 400.
The builder I'm working with suggest an LS paired with a Kenne Bell 3.6 SC similar to the photo thoughts?

That's a great choice in motors but what I've learned from the last 3 projects is less is more. Do a GM crate motor with a factory harness and a factory tune and you won't regret it. It will run and drive just like a new car which should be your end goal.

It's not 850hp but it's more then enough for a 2nd gen.

I have 2nd Gen with 468hp at the fly wheel and it's a handful. I also have a 650hp 5th gen and trust me that is plenty and it has scared the **** out of me on many occasions. People get hung up with big HP number which in most cases are completely useless for the street or track. Plus there are truly only a handful of people that can actually handle a car with high horsepower. In most case the HP gets us in trouble an we end up losing control of the car and wrecking the car.

I really like the rendering...few notes just my opinion but I think your asking for them... here goes... the rear spoiler Love it.. the front iss very good looking but worried about practicality.. the tailpipes.. they look very busy with the defuser... i would either have the exhaust exit behind the wheel (like a bandit trans Am) and have the defuser go from side to side.. or have the tails exit as you have them and skip the defuser.. Love the concave wheels.

Also just wondering If you going OEM Brewster green or are you looking at newer greens? I am also going green and I have been obsessing on color and wanted to see if you have found any info or Websites were you can get a good look at the color. I plan on having my body guy do some spray outs... My current leading Green is Dark Olive Metallic from Porsche

Thought? Comments? Here is the rear qtr rendering. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161125/50ed382b94be8598117a06ae33c69c9b.png

Thanks for the input xlexustech. I kind of agree with you on the pipes.

On the color, it will be OEM Brewster Green as that is the color it currently is. My father purchased the car new in 71 and it has been in my family ever since. So keeping the OEM color is very important to me.

That's one of SW's cars. Well, partly his anyway. DSE's website has hundreds of pictures of it.

http://www.detroitspeed.com/Projects/SW-1973-Trans-Am/SW-1973-Trans-Am-pg-1.html

x2 on the tips being too busy. Another thought you could do is to have the tail pipes simply exit out of the diffuser with just enough sticking out to get the exhaust smell away from the car. The rest of the pipe would be hidden by the diffuser.

Yeah, we hoped we didn't have to do this much metal work either. There just was rust in a lot areas. Once done, it will lady a long time. It is better job to replace panels than put so many patch panels in the car. The quarters are great examples, we would have had to repair so many areas it just makes more sense to replace them at factory spot welds.

Thanks

Just wanted to get some updated pics up

We are working slowly as we are on an extended build time to spread the cost over time. However, some progress is being made. The DSE Quadralink and rear end will be ordered this week. We are also putting a DSE Subframe in as well.

The Fesler glass kit was delivered last week. I’m interested to see if anyone has any feedback using that kit for the second gen f body.

Also, the renderings have been revised to go with a more classic formula look vs all the body mods

Updated rendering looks fantastic. I still love the color choice and a glad that's staying.

The only thing I would change is to add some sort of rear spoiler even if it's just a small duck tail. To me, the rear of these cars just doesn't look right without something back there.

Good luck moving forward. I'm glad progress is being made.

Really?

As someone who owns a 71 T/A, 74 T/A and 76 T/A I have to say...I actually prefer the non spoiler look for the 70-73 birds.

I think the best looking car on the planet would be a 73 Formula with the Formula hood, wheel spoilers but without any rear spoiler whatsoever.

In my opinion...that is the right formula.

I hate to say it but I liked the Budnik Tungstens in the basalt ceramic coated finish... was hoping you'd tie the finish into the grills, headlight and running turn signal bezels like in the rendering.

I was digging the classy bronze look of it all against the Brewster green... just my humble opinion.

GREAT build and can't wait to see how it turns out!

I thought the Pypes system I started with was well worth the money. I built my own mufflers and cut the tail pipes to dump behind the rear wheels. Otherwise, it's as they intended. I'm still on leaf springs in the rear though I'm quite low. Plenty of clearance everywhere around the axle for me.

For sound, I prefer Magnaflows. They'll get loud when you put your foot into it. Otherwise, it's a smooth, clean sound to me. The longer the muffler, the quieter. I built mufflers similar to Magnaflow's design. I only had room for 3" think mufflers and they don't make them that thin.

I can't help with header brands. My suggestion is 1-7/8" diameter primaries. I wouldn't go full 3" on the exhaust pipe. Maybe start with 3" and neck down to 2.5" before the x. Or, go with 2.75 the whole way if you're building from scratch. I'd be afraid 3" will rob too much low and mid range torque to give you higher peak power. That's not worth it in my opinion. Not to mention how much louder 3".

Car's coming along well. Thanks for keeping us updated.

I did 2 1/2 all the way back and I have plenty of ground clearance.

One issue I had is I should have frenched the floor at least 2.5 / 3 inches as instead of the 1.5” that we did as we are having a few heat issues under the rear seats.

Is that Lizard Skin on the bottom and inside on the floor? Love the Kindigit door handles! I have a 71 Firebird that I am in the process of building and yours is giving me motivation. You don’t see that many 70-73 birds being built this way. Looking sweet!!

I was considering using the Kindigit handles....how difficult were they to install?

My builder did them. I can’t imagine it was too difficult

Are you sure the battery cables are large enough? They look like 2ga.

I like the package tray with the arrow head in the middle. That's a nice touch.

Well, it’s done. Picked it up on Wednesday and drive it 160 miles home. Has it dyno tuned on TH as it was a bit angry. Very pleased with the way this build came out. The lady in the pic is my 82 year old mom who has owned this car since new in 1971. Let’s just say she was happy to see it again.

Any updates? Anything you would have done differently?

71-Formula
01-05-2020, 09:44 AM
Not really. It’s pretty much what I though it would be. Now two things I would have done would be to use a different transmission and go with a less aggressive cam. I can’t stand the lope of the hot cam ls3/480
