My new rear Baer SS4 brake kit will give me the ability to orient the calipers facing forward or rearward. I am thinking of doing them on the opposite side and put them forward to give my coil overs and exhaust some breathing room.

I was curious if there are any pros and cons to the different orientations of a caliper.

If you look at most of the modern super cars the calipers are mounted forward.

With our cars and adaption, it comes down to available space.

I don't see how it makes a difference. However is you're using the parking brake kit, the calipers only go one way.

I swapped my Explorer rear calipers around to the front of the axle to gain frame clearance. I had to switch calipers side to side to keep the bleeder screws up top and extend e-brake cables as they now enter from the rear.

I had an instructor at a HPDE event tell me by putting the calipers on the front it creates more braking grip as the brake is pulling the axle down whereas when on the back it pulls the axle up when brake applied.

I go both ways on that, thinking it makes sense and not sure if it does or not. If so, it's just an added benefit from something I did out of necessity for room.

I watched this video a couple months ago and thought it was pretty interesting. It comes down to packaging for most of us but per the discovery in the video, its about keeping the weight as low and as centered as possible.
