View Full Version : 1969 Camaro wheel question

Hey guys I'm having troubles finding out what the problem with my rear wheel/tire and suspension setup is. I know this topic has been beaten to death but still running into issues. Looking to see about getting any input or if anyone has had similar issues with their setups. Car is a 69 Camaro. I have 18x9.5 American Racing TT2's with 5.5 backspace on the rear mounted on BFG Sport Comp 2-275/40/18 tires. Hotchkis 3 inch lowering leaf springs (part number 2413C), Hotchkis Fox shocks with 18.5 to 11.25 inches of travel (part number 71020012) with a factory 69 Camaro GM 12 bolt rear end (part number 3894860NF). Wilwood rear disc brake kit (part number 140-7149). My issue that when I put weight on the ground to torque the leaf springs down I'm running into the right side of the tire sitting/rubbing on my rear quarter panel lip towards the outside of the car. No clearance and the tire just kinda sits on the quarter lip. Nothing rubs/touches on the driver side but not much room for clearance there either. Original quarters on the car that have never been replaced. I understand these rear ends don't sit perfectly centered and even if mine did I think I'd still be running into clearance issues. I know that the 275/40/18 has been the tried and true fitment on these cars with stock tubs and no modifications, and I want to avoid rolling/massaging the quarter lips. Could it be possibly the disc brake rotors? Any ideas??

Can you post a few pictures of the problem? It sounds like tire is just to wide or bulging when you have weight on wheels. How is it on the back side?

Kind of hard to see in the pic but you can see the quarter lip sitting on the tire

Back side is fine no issues there...

Yeah...I can see it. The numbers you put up should work...from what I remember. I was thinking it might be a little bit of tire bulge or something. How much space do you have on the back side? Also have you checked the back spacing on those wheels?

Are you sure they are 9.5" and not 10"?

I know Forgeline measures their wheel to the inside lip, where the tire mounts.. so a 9.5 would be 10.5 outside lip to outside lip, Plus any tire bulge.
looks like you need a 6 1/4 - 6 3/8 backspace to make that work.
One of the main reasons I sold my Works wheels I had purchased for "Joan"

wrong size tire for and 18" should be a 35 series not a 40.....a 40 has to much wall and bulge..(need, 275-35-18)
a 40 series wall works on a 17 because the 1 inch smaller rims allows for the wall and bulge
and you will have to roll the inner fender.....

I vaguely remember seeing something about tire bulge between the different brands, etc. I can easily fit a finger on the backside toward the inner fender so ther is no issues there. Just checked the back spacing and seems correct.

Looks like it could possibly be measured the same way. If i measured correctly...

Something's not right. Either your wheel is wider than 9.5", they shipped you the incorrect backspacing, or your rear end is not the original and is too wide for your car. I am running 18" wheels on my 69 and they tuck way more than the one pictured. My wheels are 18" x 9.5" with 5.5" backspacing. I am running Nitto NT555's in a 275/40 size. I did roll my fender lips, but really don't think I had to. I also have Hotchkis 1-1/2" drop leaf springs. Have you verified the backspacing yet ?
