A few of you guys followed along with my ls swapped f100 build. The builds here are amazing and guys have more money into their wheels than I have into my entire builds.
But you guys do give some awesome feedback and have some builders on here that have some amazing talent and I appreciate your pointers.
Follow along as I try and get this thing done in time for Thunderhill OUSCA

Truck was found behind a friends shop with some locked up brakes and a little frontend damage but all in all, pretty ok.
Its a start and was extremely cheap.
Wanted to make sure I had a good straight and square frame so once I got it torn down, I sent it off to a local frame shop.

Bolted in and ready to swap ends. Oh yeah, I am doing every last bit of this myself in my small shop with just a few tools, you could call it an extreme budget build.

Starting on the rear, I spent a ton of time on the back of this thing, good to go back and see where I started.

Rear end pretty mocked up and ready to weld it out. 3 link with a panhard bar. QA1 adjustables, double in the front, single in the rear Factory mustang Sway bar. Should handle extremely well.

Getting close to setting it on the ground again to hold up its own weight, but a whole lot lower this time. I am about 8" lower than stock now.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20151018_190232_zpsrzbyv9to.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20151018_190232_zpsrzbyv9to.jpg.html)
I built all of the suspension points from the good stuff that the mustang has. Those are b&r upper and lower control arms, poly on one end and adjustable heim joints on the other for some good adjustability. Also, have some separation height on the upper, lower and Panhard bar adjust-ability to be able to really dial in the rear suspension. The one thing that is poorly engineered on the mustang is the upper 3 link bar. Its rediculously short. So I chopped it up and made it about 5" longer at a total length of 75% of the lower bars much better geometry through the range of travel this way.

Let the frame clean up and plating commence. Idont really have the budget for an aftermarket frame so trying to make this one as solid and clean as I can.

1970 mustang fuel tank, fit up to the old truck, hole cut for the Aeromotive Phantom 340 fuel pump. I will have enough pump, filter and delivery to support a supercharged setup in the future.

Starting to look like something. Coyote has a 6 speed manual attached to it at this point, motor and tranny are in for good, hydraulic pedal assembly is built from scratch and installed.
Wheels are what I could afford, Iforged 18x10 Square setup all around Dunlop Direzza tires in 275/35/18 ( i plan on running bigger but needed to start somewhere)

Nice work so far, I too love a budget garage build.
What year was the donor car? What are your plans for the interior? And you are leaving it patina too right? :D

Amazing!!
=) Thank you

Thats awesome that you followed the other build, it was a super fun truck, actually it is going back to the paint shop to get a few things fixed on it after the first of the year. Plan is for the wife to drive it to a few car shows and cruise ins this year.
Nice work so far, I too love a budget garage build.

Thanks, donor car was a 2012 with around 20k on the odometer. It was in really good shape except for the front end damage. Once I tore into it I found that the wreck hit the engine harder than just about anything. I see why insurance companies total these cars. Oil pan, engine wire harness, dipstick tube, all 4 cam sensors, throttle body and body harness were all damaged beyond repair. I saw a few of those things when I bought the car, but not all of them. Still I think I got a good deal on it. $8400 for the car, I used a lot from it. Engine, transmission, shifter and shifter boot, rearend and all associated rearend hardware. I am selling off the parts I did not use. Sold the shell of the car for $1500 and should be able to get $750 or so for the wheels putting my total investment for the entire drivetrain at only $6,150. Pretty good for a 430 hp all aluminum engine, 6 speed manual trans and full rearend including brakes.
I am doing my best to leave the patina look but I find it very challenging. I am way too OCD for it.
I think what I am going to do is get it on the road for this season, then likely do a full tear down for revisions and paint next winter.
Interior is going to be nice. I Have some 65 mustang buckets I am using. They will get the TMI Sport Seat overs and dark brown leather cover with a double french stitch all around. Still torn on the door panels to keep them metal or cover with a pattern and matching leather. Dash will get the same leather treatment and stitching as well as the center console.
Thanks for the kind words fellas.

Great start man. Thought this was a repeat thread then saw the old build in the background. Two early model trucks with diff brand power plants. Awesome.

Nice job! You've got skills! Garage build here also. Nice find on the donor car. Lots of old trucks around these parts like the one your doing, but they all seem to be long beds. Pretty rare to see the SWB models. Leave the patina!

A little suprised to see all the comments.....but its pretty awesome!!!! Thank you all.
Fuel tank fits like it was made for the back of these trucks after you cut and flip the rear crossmember and move it back a bit. Aeromotive Phantom pump setup is so much cleaner than the way I did the LS Truck.

Had to get a little creative, shortened the stock MT82 shifter down by almost 5" and built my own mouting for it to keep it a little more beefy.

So these things dont come with any kind of power steering setup. Luckily Ford racing sells a pump mount, so I got a 2010 power steering pump and the ford racing bracket and voila a pump where the AC used to live. Still needed to figure out lines to get from the 2010 pump to the reservoir and back to the rack on the 2009 Crown Vic frontend. It like building a puzzle without knowing all the pieces when you start :guns:

I spent far too much time agonizing about the battery. I wanted it in the back of the truck but there were lots of drawbacks, the biggest one was getting the wire to the back of the truck, there was just no good way to get it back there and then there was the whole disconnecct issues of having to run the charge wire from the alternator back to the disconnect so it actualy functions.
So after a bunch of research, I found that there are some less common batteries with some newer technology that work really well. Although it will be up front, it will be really low and is half the weight of the Optima I was going to use.
How all garage brackets are build....cardboard

This truck is killer! I really like how you went old-school (in hot-rod theory only) with the already-capable donor car and tried to use as much already-engineered stuff as possible. This (approach to building) has been my obsession lately, after so many years playing the bolt-on game.
I'll look forward to seeing the finished product at Thunderhill next year!

Wow .... this is some nice hot rodding!! Question: I see you have a lot of dimple die action, I saw a couple photos of the press and a model, who's dimple dies are you using? What rating is the press! Is most of the bracing 3/16th?
Looks awesome ...

Thanks, I have access to a bender but currently do not have one at home. I doubt if any of the big shops would ever do work this way but I make my template and then score the piece of metal with the thinnest cutoff wheel I have. Then I have a good place to start the brake and can make it bend where I want it. Once it is all formed up, I just weld it all up. It might take me longer but it gets done on my timeline which is something I have learned to respect more and more.

Thank you, the idea was to take something that I know works, and works really well and stuff it all under the 68. I hope it works =)
You and me both look forward to it at T Hill. I have very little road race/autocross skills so it will probably be terrible but its a place to start to say the least.

Harbor Freight press and its a 20 ton unit. Dimple dies are just some off pirate I bought years ago. Most of the plating on the inside of the frame is .120, the thicker suspension brackets are all .250 and a little .188 mixed in there.
Thanks for the props!!

Thanks Marty.
Having a rough day at the office today so I decided to come in and update this a little more today. Making good progress but not 100% or even 80% sure that I will make T Hill.
Built the rest of the fuel system, its all push lock style fittings and hose. I have had great luck in the past on it.
Main run up the frame rail is 3/8" Stainless hard line with -6 ends braized on.

I am running the fuel pressure regulator at the rear for the clean look. Not sure it will be perfect but I like it. Some manufacturers run them back here so should be alright. Running DOT Airline hose for pressure reference to manifold

I need to do a little touch up with the proper paint method but you will never be able to tell it was there when I am done.

Then I started ont his project.....I should have just ordered new ones from Dennis Carpenter or something because this has been my major time suck lately well this and wiring, wiring for weeks now.
These had some rust issues and I was going to section up a couple of old inner fenders and make 2 good inners.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20151213_173854_zpsuni2sqjj.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20151213_173854_zpsuni2sqjj.jpg.html)
What I missed was that there was rust in other places on these and they looked not that great once they were welded up. So I cut off everything that was crappy and rebuilt.
Remember, paper first

Welded along the top edge and ground down the weld and metal finished. I was able to do these without filler and they turned out great.

Getting the radiator mounted up, its a generic one from Northern but fits the opening about perfect. Need to come up with an upper mount for it as well.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It is definately not on the same level as most of the builds on this forum. I read through a few of these builds and my mind is literally blown.
Been stumbling along the last several weeks with some less than exciting work but its all gotta get done to go together.
Driver side fender was trashed on the truck when I got it along with the core support and a few other bits. So I picked up a parts truck for a few bits and pieces. The fender had trim on it and a couple pretty good dents so it needed a bit of work.
Did a little bit of body work on the fender and welded up all the holes on it, no filler. Primered with the same factory stuff, grey and then red oxide, then the pebble beige on the truck from the factory.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20151227_123353_zpsseym8btt.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20151227_123353_zpsseym8btt.jpg.html)
Then some rattle can in a little more yellow to match the rest of the truck.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20151227_130842_zps834hwmq8.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20151227_130842_zps834hwmq8.jpg.html)
Keep in mind, trying to match the rest of the truck. This is the red stripe going on.

So on with some other stuff. I needed a little more clearance for the upper link in the bed floor and I dont have an english wheel or other fancy tools so I got to work with some plate and u bends.

I also needed a way to get some fuel into the fuel tank so lets cut more holes in the bed floor.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20151230_192205_zpsdrmeduii.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20151230_192205_zpsdrmeduii.jpg.html)
I snagged a gas door from an explorer and worked on making the gas door from the old bed floor. Worked really well and I have plenty of clearance for everything. Little hammer and dolly work and I have a nice finger recess to open the door.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20151230_192225_zpseprrwlsy.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20151230_192225_zpseprrwlsy.jpg.html)
Continuing work on the bed, I needed to fill in all the holes on the bedsides from the farm hooks someone put in probably in the 70's. Trying to teach myself bodywork as I get going in life. So in order to keep the filler to a minimum or not at all, I did some lite hammer and dolly work to get the hole flat before I hit it with the welder. Very little welding on these holes but I still had to disturb the bed.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20151230_192152_zpsdhvirvvm.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20151230_192152_zpsdhvirvvm.jpg.html)
Again, just metal worked the holes with some abrasive pads to just get them flat, no filler on these holes either. Hit them with some etch and red oxide and then some 600 grit paper to flaten it all out. I ended up going with just a touch of clear over the primer spots to seal everything.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160101_114006_zpsjdovuh2j.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160101_114006_zpsjdovuh2j.jpg.html)
Lots more color sanding and even more buffing and finally got the bed on the frame somewhat resembling a truck for the first time in months.

With the bed on, I knew that I needed to wrap up all the wiring to try and get this thing back on the ground and in one piece.
Onto more wiring...

That my friends brings me up to where I am today, no more secrets and Ill keep the thread up as I do work. Truck is up on jackstands, measuring to try and figure out how I am going to get a driveline under it. I know its going to have to be a 2 piece unit.

I had some good chats with friends and a couple experts on the driveline situation and was able to finally come up with something that I think should work just fine.
The very front of the stock mustang driveline has a swage to it and it was bent right there so I went back just behind that and cut off the stock front yoke that is friction welded on there. I knew that I was going to be needing to machine the flange at the other end near the carrier bearing. Stock tube was just over 3" tubing so I grabbed a piece of 3" Driveline tube and a 3" 1350 weld yoke and non greasable 1350X spicer u joint. and Wanting to make sure that I got the driveline just right I mocked this up.
This is the mocked up version of my driveline hacked together in my shop for fitup.

You can see in this photo the chunk that I had to cut off the driveline. You can also see the bolts and stuff needed to bolt up this to the truck.
My buddy Dustin managed to take my stuff and build me a very factory like driveline that should be perfect. It fits extremely well.

Fluids. This is where things really get real. I managed to get the power steering fluid in the system and got it kind of bled out, opened up some fitting to make sure I was getting fluid around the system.
Got 7.5....yes 7.5 quarts of oil in the engine.
Then started bleeding the brakes. I did not have the best luck but I did manage to get the system all sealed up I think... and got all the air out after several hours of bleeding.
I am not sure about the pedal feel though, its really soft at the top and then firms right up but there is some pedal travel, quite a bit. I need to get it on the ground and see how it stops, if it sucks, back to the drawing board.
Hope to clean up my mess this morning and see what blows up when I hook up power.

Thanks man, trying to up my build quality with each car or truck. Trying to get some new tools in 2016.
Damn good weekend, if I can say so.
Picked up the filter and it is perfect, just what I wanted. It is nice and clean and fits well in the engine bay, away from the radiator and near the front corner away from as much heat as it could be and protected from any water as well.
Got to building a mount for the air filter, might have gone a bit overboard for just a filter bracket but its cool.

I think the intake turned out well for modifying the stock crap. Once I can get the truck on the road and find someone that can tune it, I will likely do a JLT intake on it but this should work for now.

And that is the end of photo taking for the day.
I did a bit of other stuff though. I was having issues with the clutch master cylinder, I could not get it to bleed very well so I tackled that first. Got the wife to help me a little bit more. I tapped on the hose and got it as flat as I could and uphill the entire length of the line. See there is no provisions for bleeding this thing, its just through slowly pressing the pedal and releasing to get all the air out. We got that sorted out and the air bled out of it but I could still not get the clutch to release, I felt like it was just not pushing the pedal far enough or not getting all the travel out of the master.
So i started measuring and looking at the pedal. Turns out my hunch was right. Where I built the double shear on the pedal apparently It hits the heim joint and I could only use the top hole. So out with the air saw, the cutoff wheel, some files and a die grinder and an hour or so later I was able to get the full travel on the master cylinder and got it pretty well adjusted.
One more try, the wife pushed down the pedal in gear and hot damn I could spin the driveline!!!! This was a pretty big relief that the stuff I had was indeed going to work and play well together.
So, I moved onto the gauges to see if I could get all that crap to work together. Read the manual and went through all of their setup and got everything to work with the exception of the oil pressure. Pretty sure that the coyote does not use or is not setup to use the input from the oil pressure sender. I swapped in the sender from the Dakota Digital into the block and hot damn we have a full set of working guages on the truck.
I also cleaned up all the wiring under the engine cover and got the insulation on the fuel rails and got the factory heater hose guides on. Most of the work on the engine is complete. I need to build some exhaust and get the overflow for the radiator.
Garage is a mess, time for a few hours of clean up!!!!

Well......DBasher talked me off the ledge today and I am officially signed up for T Hill optima event. I am nervous.
I picked up a pile of exhaust stuff tonight, 3" stainless mandrel bends, a couple flanges that worked perfect, some stainless v band clamps and a muffler is on order.
Wish me luck.

Loved the first truck you built - this one is even better! Stealing several ideas for my own 1970 F100 that's getting rust repair at Ironworks.
Probably a moot point at this time but do you still have the old front beam suspension?

That is awesome about the 70. Ironworks does some killer work.
I ditched the stock beam stuff from two trucks now. I did not know that people were still using it???
Very slow week for work on the truck as a matter of fact its been exhausting.
Picked up a bunch of stainless 3" tubing 3" stainless mandrel u bends, v bands and some 3" 2 bolt gaskets from columbia river mandrel earlier this week as I kind of need the exhaust done before I can continue on and get it on the ground.
Ordered a muffler but it did not fit so had to order another muffler, single in and out this time instead of dual in and single out.
Magnaflow 3" all stainless, I think its going to be really loud.
Managed to get the header flange over the crossmember and back to the V Bands done, then from the V bands around the transmission, built the y connector from scratch and got that all tied in together last night. Its hard building exhaust on the floor and trying to build it all neat and tight with very very small gaps.
I spent a long time getting these just right.

Here is what it looks like under the truck. Sorry for the crappy cluttered photo. I really hope to have the exhaust all mocked up tomorrow and pull it out. I need to figure out if I am going to try and take it to a friends house to tig weld or just use the stainless wire that I have in my machine and get it done. His welds are masterful to say the least.

Thank you sir.....the whole plan for the truck is to fly under the radar. I think the finished interior and the stance might give a little bit of that away. Should be fun though.
Service Manager......Owner =)
Volvo is gone, It went to a new home in Florida. I needed the garage space and am only going to get with practice so I keep building new cars so I build drive, enjoy and sell :confused59:
Managed to get a little bit of work done on the exhaust this morning. Finished the rear part and got the exit figured out. It took me a few times to get it but it turned out good. I am pretty happy with the final results.
Got the hangers all bolted in as well and welded up the hangers to the exhaust. It was ready at that point to come out and get welded. I asked my buddy if he would weld it up, it just looked too cool to not tig weld it.
I pulled out everything and gave it to Robbie to get welded up.

Only pic I snapped of it.
After the week of exhaust work, the garage was in desperate need of some clean up. A couple hours later I was ready to get some more work done. I got the overflow tank tucked away under the air filter.

There was no great way to take a photo of i so this is what you get to see. I had to put a spacer on the front of it to make up the space. I am not happy with it but it will need to work for now, running out of time.
With that done, I could clean up the frontend a little and get the grille and upper sail panel mounted up, well at least its kind of on there. Upper bolts are in and its pretty well aligned. I ran out of hardware.

Went to put the bumper on and things up front might not be perfect. It took a little work with the porta power to push out the frame horn to get things to bolt together but I got it. I have a little more work to do to get things straight and square but pretty sure I can get it there.

So.....Exhaust is done and all bolted on, v bands, gaskets at the collector flanges, done. Little bit of copper high temp on the v bands to make sure it doesnt leak after the welding
Here is where the side exit comes out, I think it looks pretty cool and flows with the wheelwell opening and the side of the truck

I had my wife put a couple of blocks of wood under the bed when I lifted up on it so I could make some clearance for the shock bolt so it was removable without pulling the bed. Also ran the fuel vent line with a -6 line up into the bedside behind the tailight and ran a small air filter on the line. No pics though.
Also cleaned up all the bed bolts and got those all installed and nuts on the bottom and tightened up.
Got the bolts under the truck and the rearend tightened up and went from rear to front with a pair of wrenches. Got all the loose stuff tightened up. Ran the drivers side wires in P clips for the front harness up and got things tidied up. Got the Wheels bolted back on and set it back on the ground. That felt damn good.
Fired it up and drove the bitch out the garage!!!!!! That is right, I drove it out of the garage, clutch feels excellent, brakes feel like ass but stop the truck, this is as far as I drove it, then pulled it back it. Sounds awesome.

Todd at TCE Totally did a great job working with me on these. 2 piece 14" rotors, 6 piston calipers, braided stainless lines.
Truck stops incredible now.
This one is going to have to stick with the Crown Vic stuff in the front and Mustang stuff in the rear. Ill likely have to do some aggressive pads, especially with the manual brakes but want to see how it does before I start making even more changes.
I did a few things different. I mounted the rear lower control arm mounts at 45 like they are on the crown vic for proper alignment geometry.
I elected to do the SPC Camber adjustment bolts. They are a pain in the ass to install but get another 2.5 or 3° of amber adjustment allowing you to go lower without the negative effect of negative camber.
Double adjustable front struts on this truck as well so should be able to really dial it in.
I learned a lot from the other truck....a ton actually. All the little things add up. I also moved the entire cradle back 1" from the other truck to properly center the wheel in the wheel well.

Last night I could not sleep, I mean slept maybe an hour or so, finally ended up just getting up and going to work. Worked from 2 am to 3 pm this afternoon and as of right now have basically been up for.....39 hours straight. Not feeling too great right now as can be imagined.
I put some coolant into the truck and found that the T connector from the thermostat housing out to the engine and back to the radiator was cracked.......and of course nobody has one in stock so I ordered it from back east, hope it shows up soon.....at least by the weekend.
Drug out some sand paper and got to work on the drivers side of the truck. I need to spend a little bit more time on the bottom of the doors but its getting better
Hit it with the buffer and the old **** shines up pretty damn good.

Had a great night last night and have some damn talented friends.
My friend Scott Becker from STS Machining dropped off my hose clamps for the heater hoses and I have to tell you its pretty amazing what they can make in a CNC machine these days. He runs a small shop from his house and cranked these out in less than a week. I think he is going to try some hood hinges next. Amazing work.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160121_065019_zpsbto0fzt2.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160121_065019_zpsbto0fzt2.jpg.html)
I have been buggin my buddy Andrew to help me with a console for a long time and I am about to that point now so he came over and we made a huge dent in the project :D
We started off by making templates in chip board of the floor and then built the upper surface on it. The templates looked like this.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160120_195753_zpsnzgpzsxp.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160120_195753_zpsnzgpzsxp.jpg.html)
Then we cut out an exact replica of the carboard and did all our sanding and smoothing on that one before transfering it to the PVC Foam Board (It is very, very cool stuff if you have never worked with it before).
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160120_195735_zpsgjot93al.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160120_195735_zpsgjot93al.jpg.html)
Once we had that done and were happy with them, we screwed that to the PVC and used a plunge router with a bearing guide on it to cut out the actual sides of the console. We used a 1/4 round bull nosed bit and gave the top edge a nice contour and made a huge mess with all the routing.

Center panel where the shifter is is going to get a couple of cup holders and maybe a little tray for stuff to go in It should frame the seats and stuff really well and bring the interior at least into the 2000's =)
Also ordered Seat Foams from TMI for the 67 mustang bucket seats, I got the R foams with the big bolsters.
Ordered the Seat belts as well from Seatbelt Planet, they should be here the end of next week.
Carpet is ordered, interior door handles are ordered and I think that is about it.
Parts for the cooling system should be here this afternoon so I can keep progress going. I need to get shorter struts for the front still, mine are too long.

Looking good Sean! Make a mess, clean the shed, make a mess, clean the shed...before you know it you're done and enjoying what you've built.
I heard back from the guy about the thing...he said McFarland is the only person he'd ever use and that he does do small projects. With that being said, I wonder how hard it really is...I'm sure you'll look it over when the parts show up and am willing to bet a dollar you'll be doing it yourself!

Shed is a mess most days =) Thanks for checking on the the thing with the guy....I found a local guy and might give him a shot first. I dont have covers for the seats I need a guy to sew some up for me. I want a specific color and stitching. If it were just foams and covers I would totally do it myself.
Nice progress. The wheels look good on there.
Thanks a bunch..
First of all, I got the T fitting for the coolant hose today so I installed that today and got the coolant all filled up and let the truck Idle and warm up, burped the cooling system and checked for leaks. All good. Took it for the first little trip around the block and all seems alright. It has a little tick to it, it sounds like its pretty normal with these engines. Messed around with that for a bit, jacked the truck up and set the Fuel pressure to 55 lbs base.
Second trip out of the garage netted a big burnout in front of the house =) truck is going to be damn fun. The manual is where its at for sure.
Stay focused Sean...stay focused.
Back on center console build. Got the sides connected together to finish up the frame work and it fits well.

Then cut this piece out to fit and heated it up with a torch to get it warm enough to bend and held it in place till it cooled.

Trimmed the top piece to fit the ends and tried the first test fit in car to mark the shifter location.

Cut the hole for the shifter and all lined up really well. Console is turning out awesome. I am not sure what I am doing up front but its getting cup holders right behind the shifter I know that for sure. I kind of like the super clean simple look of it and dont know if I want to mess it up with stuff. Maybe just do a really cool double french stitch right up the middle of the flat panel

I have thought of that, the console is pretty low and you done exactly sit low in these things so it should not be a problem but I might mess around with their location anyways, in front of the shifter could make use of that big blank space a little better.
Only a little time tonight to work on the truck, had to go to a WInterhawks game with the wife.
Managed to pull these out of the bin and get some polish out and see if they would clean up. They polished out like new. I was pretty suprised.
Old on the left, polished up on the right.

Also spent a little more time cleaning up the license plate from the 68 I parted out. I hope that the DMV will let me keep them on the truck.
Little hammer and dolly work on the license plate and cleaned it up really good and shot it with a coat of clear. Also got it on.
Rear of the truck looks cool...At this point, I have no plans to run a rear bumper.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160122_173548_zps2tt1c793.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160122_173548_zps2tt1c793.jpg.html)
Also go the shifter adapter and lift kit built, welded up and bolted on. It has a little angle back and to the driver, forgot to snap a pic.
I was able to find some diagrams for the seat bracket and plotted them out at work actual size and printed out and picked up some steel.
1 of the seat foams showed up today, next week should be a barrage of parts. Seat foams, carpet and inner door handles, seat sliders, bolts and hardware, second seat foam and shorter front shocks....its go time fellas.
Damn near ready to take it for a trip to get some fuel for reals.

**raising hand** Me too...
Do you know what cracks me up about this....I have gotten more comments from people on the placement of the cupholders than anything else on this truck build.
My dad even made it a point to send me a text message about the placement of the cupholders and his concern about where they are going to go.....he is a car guy and almost 70.
More on that soon...Probably not a lot of people on here who care about seat brackets for the bumpside truck but Ill update this as well as my other thread to keep them all current.
Well, today was interesting. Hands down the longest I have ever worked on a set of seat mounts in my life.
Not too sure everyone knows that they once made factory bucket seat mounts for these trucks but they were very, very rare and even more rare some 50 years later. I stumbled across someone that had taken the time to draw up the seat mounts in CAD and share them on one of the ford forums. I downloaded them at work and had one of our CAD guys print them out in actual size so I could use them as a template. (Thanks Eddie) Its one of the benefits of working in the HVAC Field =)
And here we go.
Started out with some 3/16" hot rolled plate. I sincerely believe these could be made with 1/8" and be plenty sturdy.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160123_085925_zpsa20jzgys.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160123_085925_zpsa20jzgys.jpg.html)
Laid out the template on the plate....I should mention here that I made a couple adjustments. As I am not running a fuel tank and am not necessarily a small person, in height and diameter I extended the brackets to the rear of the truck by about 3" and marked another set of holes in the brackets.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160123_092324_zps2ivlfeyx.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160123_092324_zps2ivlfeyx.jpg.html)
Got to work with the plasma, grinder and a flap disc and the drill press. I did a pilot hole, around 3/8 then the final 1/2" hole x 24 holes 8)
Cut out and marked for holes. I also use a punch to mark the center of the holes before drilling.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160123_103851_zpsrfwz2u8r.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160123_103851_zpsrfwz2u8r.jpg.html)
All drilled up and ready to mark them up and bend them the poor mans way
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160123_105823_zpssciup6rp.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160123_105823_zpssciup6rp.jpg.html)
So.....I have no brake so I have to get a little more creative and its a lot more work this way but I get to the end and its a very strong good looking part. OEM, not exactly.
I marked out the lines to bend on.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160123_120806_zpszjuionns.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160123_120806_zpszjuionns.jpg.html)
Then I use the plasma to cut the lines. I leave about 3/8" of uncut material at the end and about every three or four inches I skip a 1/4" section to keep the piece together allowing me to bend it but keep the part in one piece.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160123_135422_zpsh7svqula.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160123_135422_zpsh7svqula.jpg.html)
This is how I do my bends. This is a digital angle guage from Harbor Freight. It allows me to get dead on angles on my bends. I think this one was 26 degrees. I bent it to 26.2 degrees and can duplicate that over and over this way.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160123_113816_zpsfkqx6ssf.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160123_113816_zpsfkqx6ssf.jpg.html)
I wont bore you with the other bends.....and I did not take any photos of them either.
Here are the 4 brackets bent up and ready to weld. I know bending is the preferred way but this is doable at home and should be no issue with strength for seat brackets.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160123_140552_zpsyrash8mv.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160123_140552_zpsyrash8mv.jpg.html)
I went to work with the welder, turned the heat up a little bit and had 2 good setbacks. I forgot I had put Stainless wire, so I had to swap back to normal wire, then grabbed the hood and found it with dead batteries. So a quick trip for a rockstar, and some batteries for the hood. New lenses and batteries are good for the vision.
Now onto the weld.
You can see that there is some compound angles going on here.

And there we have it, bucket seat brackets for your bumpside in about a half a day's work.

I am super happy with how they came out, they were a lot of work and I am very, very glad to have found the drawings.
My neighbor also found a weak link in my brake heim joint (These were not final tight yet) but I was not happy with this setup so I rebuilt it with WAAAAY more better stuff.
3/8-24 stud cut down and lick tighted into a female heim joint then into the coupler with a jam nut on both sides and burried together. There is no chance of a failure now.

I guess the good news is that my brackets look remarkably similar to yours =) I think mine are a little more beef than the stock ones.
Its not looking good for making it to T Hill....
Photobucket is acting up so please bare with me on the update.....some of my photos will not upload and others just upload three or four times and drop in the wrong place.
Took a little bit of time to work on the beat to #*(& hood that I got off the parts truck. It is very much not straight but its not all rusted out either. Not too sure I can live with all of the dents and stuff on it but it will have to work till I can find a straight one.
Scrubbed it up first of all, hit it with some 800 then 1500 and several passes with the buffer and it doesnt look terrible. Kind of funny seeing how different years or different models of truck have different paints on them. This one appears to just have a black primer over the metal and then color over that. Appears to be original paint as well.

My buddy Jeff took my hinges and ran them through his blaster and got them all good and clean for me (I have got to get one of those) I shot them with some etch primer and then some cast aluminum paint. Pretty happy with how they came out.....I took pics of the whole process but cannot get those to upload either....

Got the second TMI foam for the seats. They look amazing until you sit in them. The foam is waaaayyyy too thick. It raises you up a good 2" from the stock seat and pushes you forward even more. I would not order them again if I had it to do over again. I would just build the foams from scratch. For $335.00 for the two foams I could have spent money somewhere else.

I think I am going to try and find a seat I can bolt into the truck so its driveable so I can work the bugs out of it in the next couple of weeks. I am trying man, I am trying.

When I googled it, i got a ton of hits of other people complaining about the thickness of the foams, not just for the mustangs either. Some people have not done the leg work I have by mocking everything up, paid an upholsterer to cover the seats only to realize that they cannot fit in their car without their head hitting the roof of the car...these are not tall guys either.
I am going to email TMI about it today. The biggest issue I have is that the foams are not cheap. I think I am into my pair of foams for about $330.00 and that is just foams. Now I am going to be into them for a couple of hours for the upholstery guy to trim them down how they should be.
You're killing it man! I loved your last truck and this one has been awesome to watch too! You can do it!
Awesome!! Thanks man. I hope I can make it =)

This looks amazing, your a machine!
That is a big compliment coming from you. Thanks....looks like you may have been working on the camaro a little bit? Glad to hear you are back at Aarons as well. I need to get the white truck in there for some touch up on the seams still.
Thanks Crazyhorse!! I hope so too.
Looooong day at work yesterday only got a little bit of time in on the truck. Managed to get the truck up in the air and swap out the coilovers for the shorter ones. For those of you that are running a crown vic setup, how low is the front of your truck? Tire/ wheel size and crossmember to ground clearance.
Hood hinges, while they look cool on the bench, the silver in the engine bay looks terrible. Looks like I am going to reshoot them black tomorrow.
Thanks for keeping up with the build thread.

Okay, so it's like this:
Horsepower unit: Check.
Springy stuff: Check.
Wires and bolts for above-mentioned contraptions: Check.
Tires: Check.
Gas-moving device: Check (I think).
Shifter: May still require like three bolts or so. (Check soon.)
Seat: There's one somewhere.
We know you do good work, and the thing will be perfecto when done, but USCA does not require perfecto (the last and next iterations of my death trap were and will be evidence). We know it will happen soon enough. A place for the cheeks, bolted down, a couple pedal thingys, and a tiller, and you're good for the weekend.:bigun2:

I absolutely love your enthusiasm my friend and cannot wait to meet you in a few weeks.
I agree, I will get it done, really hope its at least close. I already know that there is going to be a wheel change and some other stuff but I am close.
I appreciate your words of encouragement.
Seat Tracks from mustangs unlimited showed up today along with the hardware to bolt the seats to the tracks and the tracks to the brackets. Its a lot of crap to order all this stuff from scratch.
Got the seats out, bolted the rails to the seats and figured out the latching mechanism. Amazingly enough my hacked together seat brackets from a set of downloaded drawings on the internet bolted right to the truck and the seats bolted right to the brackets.
I had to get these bolted in and see how they fit in the truck.

Also managed to spend a few minutes on the seatbelts and got them mocked up in there. They fit great....the cable end near the console might need to be a touch longer but they look great.

The silver looked terrible on these so I painted them black. I am not really sold on the black but it looks a hell of a lot better than the silver did. They go great with the stuff on the firewall. Need to pickup some washers for the hood bolts and I can get the hood bolted down.

Appears to be original paint as well.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160126_201806_zpsfg6a0p29.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160126_201806_zpsfg6a0p29.jpg.html)
It is just sitting on there, no hinges to bolt on yet.
Get a heat gun and some cans of compressed air (keyboard cleaner, etc.).
Heat up the dent, but not so much that you overheat the paint, then invert the compressed air can and spray the heated area. The inverted can will shoot out super cold spray that will make the dents pop back into their metal memory shape.
It may take small steps to pop a big dent, but it should help you :)

I have heard of this in the past....I think I am going to give it a shot and see if it makes it any better. Hood is pretty bad though, it came open on the freeway and hit the top of the cab at some time.....also the reason I did not keep the cab on the parts truck =)
Thanks for the tip John!!

Spent a little bit of time yesterday evening cleaning up the shop. It was long overdue for some cleaning and organizing. I even gathered up all the manuals, paperwork, receipts and anything coyote F100 related 3 hole punched them and got them all into a binder. I know I have a problem...I know.

Although I found a little bit more rust than anticipated in the drivers floor board, I made due with it, a little rust mort and a little aluminum panel to reinforce it for now will have to work.
Managed to get 22 sheets of Hush Mat installed on the floor, firewall and back wall of the cab. I think it turned out really good. It was a pain in the ass. Sorry for the poor photos, the phone seems to be taking worse and worse pics with the update.

I also got the holes burned in for the seat mounting brackets and the seat mounting brackets bolted in place. Seatbelt on the drivers side is in.
I need a tap for the seatbelt holes in the center and some proper sized washers for mounting the hood. If its dry enough tomorrow I might get the truck out for a few minutes.

Got the seatbelt for the drivers side all installed, bolted in the seat for temporary and checked it all out. With the stock foams int he seats they are very comfortable. Great seating position and easy pedal operation.
Got the hood on it and tried to line it up but the hood is pretty messsed up from opening going down the freeway sometime in its life.
Had a little bit of help from some friends and figured out why the speedometer was non operational. Turns out the information I got from Ford Racing was wrong and I had two of the wires on the sender backwards. He is a full time tech and we pulled up the wiring diagram from All Data.....It was awesome.
Swapped the two wires back and forth on the connector and Voila....working speedometer.
Now onto the bad news.
I have a noise in the engine that we are unable to locate. It sounds like spark knock or pinging but it sounds pretty mechanical sometimes as well. I pulled the pan a while back and inspected and there was nothing in there. I also did an oil change after running for a couple hours or so and there was nothing in there either.
So I needed to dig further to find said noise....its not healthy.
Pulled Passenger side cam cover to inspect.

I do not see anything wrong on anything that I opened up. The top end on this thing looks like its brand new but I am not a Ford trained technician.
I think it sounds like timing chain to me. The only thing I did see was some whitness marks on the backside of the timing chain that indicate its been running against some plastic, dark colored like black or dark brown. I am wondering if I have a chain guide/tensioner issue but am not too sure how to tell if I do or not.
Oil pressure is excellent 100 psi at startup and around 40 at a hot idle.
Could be spark knock because of the no cats, open exhaust and open element air filter...could be mechanical issues I have no idea at this point.
Any input? Its almost impossible to get video of it since it has to be running and driving.
Pretty sure at this point that I am not going to make Thunder Hill, I just am running out of time to do it all.
Super Bummed out.

Just a quick search and I've found that it's fairly common on these motors...passenger side ticking. It seems more noticeable when guys have done headers or cat deletes. It appears ford issued a TSB on the timing chain at some point as well, I'd start there.
Is it RPM related?
What oil? Some folks mentioned hearing it after an oil change.
Can you plug in to see if any codes have popped up?
Check your PS pump and make sure it's got the clearance, Clarence.
I'll look into it some more tonight when I've got more time...don't worry you'll get it figured out.

We thought it was spark knock or Pre ignition being a really lean conditions so I ran some 110 octane through it last night, no change at all.
There is no other signs of damage other than the plastic on the one connector. The electrical connections appear to be just fine inside that one.
Pulled the serpentine belt off last night to rule out alternator, tensioner and water pump. Same noise.
Added in some hyper lube to the engine oil as I have heard good things about it same noise.
Picked up a stethoscope and got it good and warm and tried to pin point the tick. There is literally no noise from the engine. It was loudest near drivers side tire. So I started poking around with the stethoscope around the exhaust and frame then hit the bellhousing and the noise was very clear in the stethoscope.. tick tick tick.
I have no idea if the tick tick tick and clatter are related to each other, they sure sound similar though.
Push in clutch pedal, hot tick goes away.
Going to drain transmission fluid this am and flush and refill with redline MTL.
Interior has to get finished today and over to the upholsterer. Trip permit is going to run out and I need to get it registered so I am playing hooked from work for a little bit today.
Work peeps following along.....thanks for understanding =)
I'll report in in the MTL helped at all.
Sean
So....I had one dry day, and one day to get the upholstery done and get it to the upholstery guy.
Got the MTL swapped in, that was a nightmare by the way. It made no difference in the clatter. I raised up the rearend a little bit and went for a cruise. I put 10 gallons of fuel in the truck and drove it to the DMV.
Well its got a couple really big problems. The driveline vibration is bad. It does go away at some speed not sure what speed that is, it seemed to change around a little bit.
3rd gear, well it does not go into it all the time. Seemed to work about 80% of the time but twice at least I got a grind out of it.
The Clatter that I mentioned before and thought was pinging or detonation is clearly not. It is a mechanical issue, its present in any gear clutch in or out once its warm and has been driven a ways it will make it in the driveway.
Swapped in a brand new set of Motorcraft plugs just to rule that out. Also double checked the coil packs on each plug, verified operation as best I could. No difference.
So I am done with this thing for a bit. I am mentally destroyed between this and my actual work load.
I finished up all the work on the interior since I had a deadline with the upholstery guy tonight.
Here is what I ended up with on the console. I thought it turned out really well for a backyard shop.
Adding a little detail for the side to break it up. This is 1/8" material.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160202_163725_zpswz6myrov.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160202_163725_zpswz6myrov.jpg.html)
Cut out, mocked up and letting the glue dry
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160202_165542_zpsuqgdv8tg.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160202_165542_zpsuqgdv8tg.jpg.html)
So this piece serves two purposes. Cover the screw holes that hold the thing together and add a little detail to the top of the side panels. The 1/8" piece is about 3/4" shorter than the side, giving a nice little detail when it is being covered. The side will be covered in one piece each. The center panel will be removable for access to run wiring and things like that down the center. Panel will have a french stitch all the way down the middle to keep the theme on everything.

Sean,
If the ticking noise goes away when you push the clutch in, I would be exploring either a clutch or a throw out bearing issue.

It sucks to hear about issues like you're having, but really, some of them should always be expected with a new build. It will probably be a year of time between when I bought the engine/trans (currently sitting in my Falcon) and when it might be fired. Here's hoping for a lack of issues . . .:sarcasm_smiley:
Let's take a minute to blame unreasonably optimistic expectations and the need for artificial deadlines on reality TV. These elements added to a hobby will frequently ruin the value--don't let it happen. Just chill. Be the boss.

To be clear. I don't really think Paul has a dirty whore mouth. If the truck doesn't make it, it isn't because he gave up...a few days to let things marinate and he'll be right back at it. If it's a simple parts swap or exchange it'll get done, if it's broken....well there's always another event.

I dont have much hope for making it. The time that I am spending troubleshooting this issue is taking away from getting all the other crap I need to done, like breaks and bearings on my trailer, troubleshooting the short in the trailer breaks.
Driveline vibration needs to be dealt with as well...its bad.
Also need to get some better pads on the old girl all around and go make some panic stops and make sure they will stop but have yet to research and order pads.
I have not gotten a room reserved yet either, but have paid for my entry fee already.
I get a little noise from cylinder 4 area but its not the same noise that I get when its under load.
As terrible as this sounds, I think I am going to get the hood back off of it and have someone else drive it and have me ride around on the frontend and see if I can isolate where the noise is coming from.
If the wife sees that or I get hurt, Ill be in a world of trouble.
I have some dyno time next saturday if I can make it until then.

I still have a set of front calipers off of a Chump car that would bounce your Eyeballs off the wind shield (PM Dan if you dont believe me)
As far a s the vibration goes it may be an orientation issue. Try rolling it 90 degrees at the rear end. I saw that you had a carrier bearing in it so you may have an issue there. not sure if it is splined or bolted. My old 69 C10 was splined till I lowered the truck. Without listening to it I would not even want to guess what the tapping is. Hopefuly I get a chance to see it run at T hill.

Hey Wayne, I got your PM a little while back. I am sure that the driveline needs more adjustment and tinkering with but the clatter is my main focus right now.
I am curious if you happen to know any more about the pads that you guys were running on the chump car? I am looking to get some more agressive pads installed before i get it out on the track.
I could type up an entire book about my troubleshooting process but here is the highlights.
I found a really hefty exhaust leak mid week so I pulled the exhaust apart and cleaned things up and put some copper RTV on the header flange to the small downpipe and reinstalled. Sounds exactly the same.
Had a friend come over Friday night with a Snap On Chassis ear....that was where the bad news started.
Its either bottom end noise, clutch or transmission.
We picked up a lot of noise on the side of the engine but even more noise on the bellhousing. So not 100% sure if the bottom end is shot or the clutch/tans is shot but something is wrong, broken, damaged for sure.
I started to pull it apart friday night and realized I had over looked something while building the truck......I cannot pull the trans out the bottom of the truck.:-roll
But I was able to get the transmission moved back far enough to pull the pressure plate and look at the clutch.
Here is where we get more questions than answers. The clutch is like brand new. Ford part with a manufacture date of 01/21/15, I had the car in what september and I bet the clutch took a couple of months to get shipped and installed so it might be four or five months in the car.
However the springs are really beat up and two of them are pretty loose in the cage, I can rotate the springs quite easily in the cage and two of them get looser and tighter in the cage. The center hub has a good tick tick tick to it as well when you rotate it in the clutch. When we were pulling out the driveline you could hear the clutch rattling as we were rotating the driveline back and forth

I randomly talked with a guy in Seattle yesterday who races in a spec mustang class. He seemed to know these things better than most. I explained my issues, little bit of end play in the input shaft, rattle on bottom end and stuff and he said replace the clutch. DO NOT PUT A FORD CLUTCH in it though. He said on their spec cars they have to run the Ford clutch and can barely get a race weekend out of one clutch. He said get ahold of ACT and order their setup for it and be done with it. Then put it all back together and see what happens.
So as of right now that is my plan. Order a clutch on Monday and get it here as fast as possible and see what happens.
Oh, my Dakota Digital OBD adapter died also, so I have a new one of those coming Tuesday as well.
Totally running out of steam on this thing. If its bottom end, not too sure what I am going to do.
Here is crossing my fingers to this fixing it...

Spent the weekend doing chores around the house, organizing some stuff and recycling a ton of stuff. Even did a couple of house projects....I know what???
In cleaning up I decided I finally needed to get rid of this stuff and build the seat I have wanted since we pulled the seat from the truck, it is in immaculate condition.
Here is the Grille Narrowed up 8" to match the width of the bench.

Got the frame all built for the seat and getting the fit better on the height of the seat as a sofa and the fronted fit up where it needs to go.

Here is the somewhat finished product. I need to make a top cap for the frontend, I dont like how unfinished it is and I still need to find a couple of bezels for it. Anyone have a couple they want to get rid of, white and beat up is totally cool with me.
I raised the grille up off the floor a fair bit. Bench might be a little bit tall for some but its about perfect for me.

As terrible as this sounds, I think I am going to get the hood back off of it and have someone else drive it and have me ride around on the frontend and see if I can isolate where the noise is coming from.

Started it up tonight, same noise. It almost sounds a little quieter but that could just be that there is an interior and a console in there. Its still there.
I believe at this point for me, I am done with the truck in its current state. I do not feel like pulling the motor and purchasing a new crate engine for the truck and investing another $7,000 in a truck that I already went over budget already, and that still does not guarantee that it is not something in the transmission.
Signing off for a while....Thanks all for following along.

Subscribing, even though I don't like Fords ;)
I've been there, chasing a tick that just doesn't sound right. At this point, why not pull in a pro? Someone to physically be there and do that? BTDT sort of people know statistics on sounds like that.
If it's the low end, so be it, either tear into it or run it until it blows.

Wait, what? What Grendel said above...drive the sucker. If she blows, she blows, you won't even hear the ticking noise at ThunderHill, with you helmet on. I can't imagine that those engines are big bucks anyway. Yards are probably full of them, and can be had for very little, I'm guessing. You've come too far to let this stop you from making the trip. It's probably one of those infamous Ford timing chain noises. Those engines have a lot of chain in them. RUN IT!!! This build is killer!!!!

I agree...run it til it blows...or doesn't.
The 8.1 lt in my 2002 truck has made all sorts of noises from deep inside ever since it was new. All of the GM haters told me it'll never last, the cold start knock would give it an early death.
I've run it short on oil many many times, ran the dog snot out of it and abused it pulling loads way over capacity...and it still runs like a top...220,000 miles later.
Barney's crate engine had some pretty significant valve train noise ever since new as well. Probably the stamped steel rockers...never stopped me from running it like crazy as well.
Don't give up now!!!!

Sorry for the brief reply earlier fellas.....was on the dyno.
I appreciate the kind words and words of encouragement. Just really frustrated.
Took it over to a friends shop today and rolled it on the dyno...not for HP just to listen to it with a load on it and get a fresh set of eyes on it. We could not hear **** on the dyno, its really loud with the truck, the rollers, the fans and stuff so we just took it out and drove around. We figured that its a pretty loud version of the tick I hear at idle.

So we got it up on the rack and ran it. Its coming from something in the motor from what we can tell, the noise is the loudest at the side of the block. Took the opportunity to shoot a couple pics of the underside for the potential parts buyers =)

Its not loud enough to sound like its coming apart and they both said they would just run it. Put some thicker fluid in it and run it.
So I came home, picked up some 5w50 which is what they run in the track pack cars.
Drained the oil when I got home and got a little bit of a suprise.....a whole bunch of metal

It is not a ton of metal, but its metal, and its in the oil, there are some flakes in there that are bigger than just the glitter in the oil.
I wanted an answer, guess I got it.

I cannot seem to get any good photos of the oil in the pan. Ill try. I am by no means an engine rebuilder. I know that small glitter in the oil is sometimes understandable or ok. But small flakes of metal in the oil are not ok. I ran a magnet through the tailings of metal in the oil and some of it sticks to the metal some other stays in the pan.
I woke up and said F u truck and got to work like any other project. 2 hours later Engine was bolted on the stand and I was ready to order a crate engine this time.

One interesting thing. There is one good hot spot on the flywheel and pressure plate, I am going to reach out to ACT and see what they say There was no hot spot on the factory stuff.
Ordering a few things and looking for a little more information. If I can get a motor, I should be able to get it installed in an evening with a little bit of help with the front clip.
I am going to flip it over in a little bit and pull the pan and see what the heck happened.
Screw you Coyote engine....screw you.

Something to keep in mind.......when your crate motor shopping. The new ones (I assume picked from fords supply for the 15 and up stang)have some differences in the oil filter adapter area. I would spend a little time clarifying this but I have one from a 15 and the frpp oil filter relocation adapter does not work as its intended for the earlier coyote. Hopefully I can prevent an unexpected headache for you. I respect your perseverance. Keep up the good work.

Well it definately is not something simple. Pan has been off though, lots more metal in it.
Unfortunately this motor is shot. It is believed that it was something that happened during the accident. I pulled the pan, there are big flakes of bearings in it. Like the size of a q tip.

The engine has excessive end play with an audible clunk when moving it back and forth in the engine. You can feel it with your hands when moving it back and forth.
New Service engine has been ordered from Ford. This will be cam covers to pan, will require my intake, accessories and other stuff but I am just fine with that. Comes with a 3 year warranty.
Motor should be here Wednesday, hope to have it in the truck and ironing out the final details this weekend and putting some miles on it if all goes well.
Cross your fingers, its going to be a whirlwind couple of weeks I think =)
Got home and got almost all of the accessories off the engine just to make sure I was not missing anything to get it put back together. Only need to pull the alternator off tomorrow.

My very first engine upgrade project as a teenager was a 4 bolt main 350 I traded for out of a recently wrecked 2nd Gen Camaro that I put in my 1978 Monte Carlo. It spun a rod bearing about 3 weeks later...
I'm pretty sure some damage happened to it during it's accident as well.
Sorry for your luck but it looks like you have a good plan in place.

On a related note, I've always had my best luck with used engines--it's been the opposite with machine shops. Here's hoping the crate version does the trick.

I have never had this bad of luck on an engine to be honest and I have bought a ton of engines. It just so happens that its likely the most spendy of them all. Sometimes that is how the cookie crumbles.

Ill drink your beer my friend!!!! Looking forward to meeting lots of new faces by the way.
Oh man....hope that big girl shows up tomorrow.
Got my pre oiler built so I can put all of my oil in through the block and get the new motor nicely oiled up before start up. I popped off a cam cover and rotated the crank over while putting the lube in and sure enough, I had lots of oil coming up onto the cam while rotating it over. Should work sweet on the new engine too.

Now you guys might be laughing but for like $12.00 it works really well. The end of the sprayer is 1/4" so a 1/4" brass coupler and a piece of 1/4" brass pipe and it bolted right where the oil pressure sender was located.
With that done, I had a few things on the interior that were bugging the crap out of me. The dash was still not bolted in so I got that cleaned up and bolted in, its not picture worthy but its in there and I can get a few things buttoned up. Little bit at a time right.
Sorry for the finger in the picture..
These were bugging the crap out of me. They looked terrible on the newly upholstered seats.

Looks so much better in my opinion.
Now, do I paint the seat brackets? Wrap them in Vinyl? I have no clue. I need to try and get some carpet dye or something, the copper color is terrible.
Thanks for following along and all of the words of encouragement fellas.

Thanks Jay. Its a bummer about the engine, but not much I can do really. Pretty sure I had 2 vibrations, one in the engine and one in the driveline. Hoping I only have one in a few days and non next week =)
Well, motor showed up at Ford around 2 so I headed down there and picked it up. I was pleasantly surprised for once, Not only were all the parts there, on time and they loaded it up for me. They gave me a $300 in store credit after the purchase I was not expecting..
Not to mention the engine came with more parts than expected!! New intake, water pump, idler pulley, motor picking eyes that made our job so much easier. Also came with all the sensors on the engine proper.
Got it home and got it all unloaded....did I mention how nice those picking points were?
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/1455753484091_zpsn3lazoq6.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/1455753484091_zpsn3lazoq6.jpg.html)
We then worked on transfering all of the parts onto the new engine, accessories, alternator, injectors, new Pilot bearing, transmission spacer plate, exhaust manifolds, flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. I also pulled the oil pressure switch and ran three quarts of fluid through my pre oiler setup. You could hear the oil making its way back to the oil pan, and pulling the fill cap you could see it running out of the timing gears and the cam. It was pretty neat actually. Rotated the crank shaft while pre oiling as well.

Made some good progress tonight. Have everything back together ready to start......Not too sure how I overlooked it but apparently this thing comes with a pan full of oil? Well, I did not check it first and added oil and ended up with a ton of oil in there. So I had to drain it all out and start over, guess I need to get more oil tomorrow and fire it up :tv_happy:

Got the oil in and fired it up. First turn of the key. Lifters pumped up and I had oil pressure right away. Then my oil pressure sender on the dash went to 0 and EE which means error or no signal :-X16
Shut it off and checked the wiring and sender again, all good fired it up and same thing.
So I ran to the parts house and picked up a mechanical oil pressure guage, removed the factory sender and got this one in its place. Fired it up again and no issues with oil pressure, its a sender or Dakota Digital thing. Ill iron that out this week.
Got it up to temp and got the coolant all topped off and checked everything else out. All looks good.
First trip around the block and its nice and quiet.
Got inside the house about midnight and the shop was a pile of a mess. Weather was supposed to be ok and dry for the first time in what seems like months.
Got up at 5 and got back to work.
Worked on getting the new shifter extension built and installed and the new shift boot and ring glued up and installed. Turned out really good I think

Was really interesting to hear people's thoughts an opinions on the truck. People would walk right past it, stop, come back, walk around it and then smile. Lots of people wanted to talk with me about about it. Made me feel good.
Found that 5th gear has an issue with the synchros, Ill have to deal with that but its going to have to wait till I get back. Ill have to deal with it, its not stopping me now.
Had a little noise in the frontend, came home and found that there is a lower balljoint that is pretty trashed so I need to swap that out as well.
Other than that, the truck is pretty awesome, the manual and three pedals is just so refreshing and very, very fun to drive.
Got almost 75 miles on it today without a hiccup from the engine.
Order more parts today.

Well, I had a pretty successful day yesterday. I was hearing a lot of noise from the passenger front wheel though when coming to a stop. I got home and jacked up that corner and looked things over. I found that I had overlooked a pretty hammered lower ball joint and a wasted wheel hub. So, parts got ordered and then this commenced last night.

I also got the opportunity as written above to hammer on the brakes a few times. Nothing broke =) Stops the truck pretty damn good. Also drove it this morning and the brake noise on the passenger side is all gone.
Had to do a bunch of other stuff today, a little emergency car rescue with the trailer for a buddy and some clean up around the house.
I pulled the passenger seat out and finally got around to putting the seatbelt on that side as well. I had found some paint for the brackets that I wanted to try, its satin dark walnut and Ill be damned if its not almost an exact match to the seat material. I was super happy with how that whole seat, seat bracket and seat belt turned out.
I also spent the time to build the brackets to hold the door switches and got those all wired up to the revolution electronics module for the soft on, delay, soft off. Got the under dash lights all installed and wired up as well.

Sean. Something you might consider. Id post the link, but my phone isnt cooperating. Search Big brakes on a not so big budget. Its a thread on the Mercury Marauder site. Basicly, its a 14 inch GT500 rotors, C5 Vette dual piston calipers, and brakes hoses from Jegs. There is a guy on that site who sells caliper brackets to make it work. Total, depending on how cheap you can get the calipers w/abuntments is under $6-700.

That is some great advice!! I spent a couple hours last night reading up on the kit they put together looks like it would be a really budget way to get some bigger brakes under the front. Ill likely order some brackets next week when I am back from California. Thank you for sharing, I would have never found that.
I was going to just live with the unfinished parts behind the seat but the other night when I was painting the seat brackets and getting the seats installed, I just could not stand it any longer and got to work.
I started by building some panels to cover up the unsightly back part of the cab where the fuel tank used to reside. They are super light, made of plastic and pretty easy to work with.

A little sanding on the pieces and they were ready to get covered.

I still was having some trouble with what to do about the back wall flat area, but I knew that I needed to continue the stitch.
I cut some 1/2" x 3/4" pieces and rounded over one side and glued it to the flat PVC Foamboard, it glues together nicely. I got that stuff covered and also cut out the center panel to get the stitch done on.

I also made a trip to the alignment shop as well. I heard about some people locally that could do a more performance oriented alignment and they certainly did not dissapoint.
We got the truck right up on the rack and they threw their fancy stuff on it and got a baseline.
All of my measuring, remeasuring and OCd of placement of the links, suspension points and front end paid off as they were pretty suprised to see how close I had everything. Chassis is square and suspension is all within 1/16th of an inch of where it should be, wheelbase was about perfect side to side as well. We started with 5.66 degrees of caster, .10 degree of toe and 1.56 and 1.55 degree of negative camber. I was shocked.
They straightened out the steering wheel, dialed in the camber right at 2 degrees and left the caster alone. I seriously encourage anyone who does this swap to keep the lower rear suspension mounts at a 45 degree angle and if you are going to lower it, install the SPC Camber adjustment bolts. Both allowed me to have a very functional front suspension and a pretty low ride height.

Still chasing the vibration, but I adjusted the lower rear links to the next hole up and went in 5 clicks on the adjusters of the coilovers and it made a huge difference.
Wheel travel is much more controlled and ride is greatly improved. Hope to mess with it some more tomorrow.

I was for about 8 years. Journeyman myself. Spent most of my time in residential retrofit and dabbled in service work. I found it a hard trade to live with, mainly due to poor work life balance. They try to run you pretty hard. I'm sure you can relate. I've since moved on to finish carpentry which I find much more suiting.
That being said, the in depth understanding I gained of electrical circuits, plumbing, fluid flow, and trouble shooting has helped me in all my other endeavors in life. It's made me a better hot rodder to boot.
So, LS or Coyote for cost economy? Being so early in, do you like the 5.0l? The 6.2l are pretty bad ass, but I think they are all 2v.

You guys are awesome. Mr. Weld.....you should have made the trip, it was an epic weekend =) and I would love to meet you in person someday.
I got to meet a ton of people from this forum, great people all of them. I loved talking with everyone (I am not great with names sorry about that)
Pretty great group we have here.
What an insane weekend, not even sure I can put it all into this post but I will give it a shot.
Rolled in with my friends from Seattle and their bad ass car. Got some fuel in the old girl and got through Tech and threw some stickers on it. Very cool place to spend some time.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160227_083946_zpsccx1xc04.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160227_083946_zpsccx1xc04.jpg.html)
So day 1 was autocross day and I was pretty nervous. I had done a few auto cross races but not enough to be good at it. I quickly found out a few flaws in my plan.....seat.....seatbelt. I ran through the auto cross course 11 times I think in the course of three hours. There were some incredibly quick cars there and crazy talented drivers.
Towards the end of my morning session I realized I had to do something about staying in the seat as I was having to hang onto the outside of the truck in order to stay in the seat, but it just was not working.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160227_100757_zps71sb4mwk.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160227_100757_zps71sb4mwk.jpg.html)
I did make some incremental adjustments to the truck that morning though, adjusted the settings on the coilovers a couple of times to get it to flatten out a little bit more as well as dropped the air pressure in the tires to increase rearend grip. They both helped a ton and the truck was working really well.
It just so happens that my friend Dan (DBasher) had bought a set of ProCar buckets for his mustang project and he was picking them up there. I thought they might be close so I unbolted my seat and looked how close it would be. Two new holes in my brackets later and I had a seat that would hold me in.
The good eyes will also notice a steering wheels swap... this one has less dish, is an inch bigger and has nubbs on the back for traction. These two changes transformed the truck....I am learning a lot.

Funny thing is that these seats put me in a way better driving position, lower and farther back. I ran the rest of the weekend with this setup.
So we got through lunch with the seat swap and off to the Speed Stop challenge. This is a little faster and really tests the take off, turn and brakes. This was awesome and I really enjoyed this, the truck did really well. It was awesome being lined up with all of these beautiful super high dollar cars in the staging lanes and holding my own =)

Those that were asking how the brakes work pay attention here. FANTASTIC!!! It took me a few tries in the stop box to get it dialed in but the big girl comes to a stop and fast.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/imagejpeg_3_zpsvkvk9uuh.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/imagejpeg_3_zpsvkvk9uuh.jpg.html)
Great weight transfer and the truck did really well. Finished I think 13th out of 24 in my class. I have never done this before, I was really happy with how the truck performed so far.
Did the evening cruise with no issues and actually really enjoyed it. I met a ton of new friends and people and once the truck was out on the courses I got a few more people coming by to talk to me about it. Pretty sure people loved it :D
I went over it all early sunday morning and could not find an issue so far, all bolts were tight. Made some additional adjustments to the coilovers before hitting my track session.
I was really nervous to be honest.
I had three really great track sessions but slow, I am not comfortable on the track yet but the truck was awesome. First session was loose in the backend and I ran really low on fuel so I pulled off. Filled up the tank and the back end got a lot more planted. I need stiffer rear springs, I know that.
Keep in mind this is a pickup, built in my garage in just a few months and it was hanging with some pretty cool cars out on track.
I lost a power steering belt on the last session, ran the 15 minute session with no power steering and other than being a handful on the arms the truck still drove fine so I stayed out there the entire session.
Power was awesome, the motor did not miss a beat, has a ton of power and not to sound cocky but it sounds friggin incredible when I am on it.
Exhaust turned an awesome color at the end of the weekend after getting some hard beating for hours and hours.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160228_154037_zpsxrxm61bt.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160228_154037_zpsxrxm61bt.jpg.html)
Tires are nicely scrubbed in and have worn pretty well. =)
So here is where the weekend took a turn.
These guys came over and started to talk to me, then they got a few more people to come over and look at the truck, then they wanted more information and asked if we could go take some better video and sit down and talk about the truck.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160228_142717_zps3lzu2ul1.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160228_142717_zps3lzu2ul1.jpg.html)
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160228_142739_zpsfdns8lkw.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160228_142739_zpsfdns8lkw.jpg.html)
It was super cool and they dug the truck.
So these guys shot a bunch of video of the truck. I got it all loaded up and ready to hit the road as I had not placed anywhere in the top spots.
Hanging out at the end watching them announce the class winners and they got ready to read out the overall but started with the "Spirit of the Event award" Presented by K&N. I had talked to Mike from K&N for a fair bit of time over the weekend.
I was in utter amazement when he called up number 68....that was my number. This was just not happening right now....Not it was real.
I hustled up on stage and shook Mike's hand and Jimmy Day from OPTIMA's hand and they asked me if I can make it to SEMA. Of course I can make it to SEMA.
They took a little video of the truck and me and we all got on our way.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/IMG_0691_zpsko4ma1k6.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/IMG_0691_zpsko4ma1k6.jpg.html)
I could not be much happier with how the truck performed over the weekend, I have a lot to learn and some small changes to make like Brake Ducts, proper Seat, harnesses, some better front brakes (for brake fade on the track not more stopping power.)
Thanks all for the encouragement over the past few months, it was all totally worth it.

Congratulations, Sean--you've turned hotrodding into a science! We were all very impressed with how your truck looked and worked out there, because you're a hotrod maniac who takes the time not only for all-around booty-kickin' performance, but to make sure he has a damn nice interior. You've earned the credit!
It was good to meet you in person, but more importantly, it was fun to see you enjoying the hell out of your truck on Saturday, in perfect California weather. That's what it's all about. Here's to pics of the truck in Vegas!:bump:

Great work on the truck, and the event. :trophy-1302:
I'd be curious to know what was wrong with your first engine when you tear it down. I'm wondering if that front end collision just smashed the thrust/main bearing back. Maybe a new set of bearings is all it needs? :headscratch:

Unfortunately I did not get it judged before the seat swap....I will next time though. The seat swap was rad, I actually enjoy working on stuff like that and it made a huge difference, I think people were looking at us like what are these guys doing on that old farm truck?

Thank you, Thrust is what we think is shot in the engine, it has excessive crankshaft end play and that also leads us to believe that it was from the wreck. The other indicator is that when you pushed in the clutch just a little bit the noise would get a lot quieter, all the way in and it was there and all the way out it was there.
Congratulation's Sean reading all the excitement in your post made me smile! No more thoughts of busted knuckles and bad motors. Only the sweet feel of Victory!!!!!! Good for you !
Thank you!! I am over the bad motor, live and learn right? I had a smile from ear to ear. Dan told me before we even went, I just need to show up with a working truck and a good attitude and I think I did both pretty well =)

To say the last 6 months of building this truck has burned me out was an understatement!!!! I feel like I have been sleep deprived for the past 6 months (I actually have been)
The last week and a half I have not done a damn thing, lots of work, getting some things caught up around the house and stuff but barely went into the garage at all. Even all weekend, not much.
I am not done with this build though, even though its on the road and made it to the first event I have a lot more work to do.
I did manage to get it to shred a new power steering belt in like 10 miles. So I tore the pump and bracket off cause I feel like I have an alignment issue. When I got the bracket off I saw I had a problem. The dowel pins that are supposed to locate the bracket to the block were in the bracket, not holding the bracket to block in the right location.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160304_092525_zpslvjlxgrc.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160304_092525_zpslvjlxgrc.jpg.html)
I put the dowells in the block first, then in the bracket and made sure that it is going to stay in the right spot. Have probably 25 miles on it and no signs of a problem.
Also knew that I was going to need to do something with the brakes as they got a bit hot on the track at Thunder Hill. So a little tip from a fellow forum goer and I was lead to some killer brackets that allow you to run 14" GT500 rotors and C5 corvette calipers and pads on the crown vic frontend. Not only will this be a big upgrade in stopping power, I should have a lot less brake fade but also a chance to run a huge variety of brake pads, the stock crown vic setup, not so much.
Dont worry, Ill make sure that the calipers dont say corvette on them.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160308_170725_zpswx6jlomr.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160308_170725_zpswx6jlomr.jpg.html)
Brackets should be here in the next few days, I need to order some pads and get them installed so I can mock them up.
Also, needed to get the new bigger and better offset steering wheel painted up and installed.
I also got the horn button to work. This is a factory ford horn button, mated up to a Grant Mustang steering wheel. There was some cut and chop with the horn buttons and I needed a horn itself so I got that installed and all wired up, the horn even works to boot!!!

Also got this and the cover yesterday so got a little bit of mockup done. It sucks...but man it holds you in the seat right where you should be, pain in the ass to get in and out of but Ill take that if I can focus on steering.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160308_195859_zpsdhaddckr.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160308_195859_zpsdhaddckr.jpg.html)
Next track day is on the 20th of March, should have a little more time to get things done before then. Might even come up with some kind of roll bar/harness bar.
So in mounting the seats and thinking about a harness bar, I am wondering what exactly I should do to mount the harnesses? I am struggling with the height of the harness bar as it needs to allow the harness to be less than a 20 degree angle to the bar from my shoulder, but that would actually put the bar above the top of the seat with the low back buckets and the cab being right behind me. I think I am just going to build something and see where it lands and hopefully nobody hassles me too much about it. Any input on this from someone that is more experienced with these than me?
Thanks again for all the nice words and encouragement, keeps me motivated.

Obviously its for safety, but not the kind of safety a massive regulation roll cage offers. If its just to keep you planted in the seat (more or less) does it need to be exactly to what a crazy cage requires? What are the main points of having a harness with a 20 degree shoulder angle? Mostly this is me adding to your thoughts with mine.

Should've built a crew cab.
The back of the cab is double walled correct? :superhack: You may not be able to get to 20 but I think as long as it looks correct you won't have a problem in tech.

One option may be to install the harness bar where it needs to be but fabricate it in a way it can be removed when not needed.

Not too sure what to do about the harness stuff...still thinking about it.
Probably going to have to roll with the 3 point until after next weekend.
Messed around the garage today for a little bit after a really rough night last night.
What I started with this morning.

So you can see the brackets here in the photos, they are really nice quality and the hardware came with them. They adapt the crown vic frontend to the C5 corvette PBR aluminum calipers and run the 14" GT500 rotors.

The Rotors needed to be opened up at the center of the hub to fit over the crown vic.

You can get the idea from the photos of the size difference from the photos. Stockers are 12" and the upgrades are 14"

I had to make some provisions to the calipers for the smaller wheels..you can see I made some changes with the grinder to these. I have about 2mm clearance now to the caliper from the wheel...its tight but it should be just fine.

I thought so too and kept with the OEM Theme of the truck. Thanks Sieg and appreciate you sharing some killer photos with me.
I am working on the brake ducts this week, hope to have them done before next weekend.

Actually the fins are on the back side of the caliper where the mods had to be. Its likely because of the aftermarket 18" wheels have a thicker hoop than the OEM ones. I have seen a couple people be able to run this setup with 18" FORD wheels. It is also a 14" rotor, its pretty good size.
Excellent work. I admire your determination. :)
Thank you, I have lots of that whole determination thing going for me.....some people call it stuborn, I like determination better.

Brakes look good! Funny I mentioned be interested in what seats you were going to choose and you went with the one I'm currently most interested in. Did you get the padding for it? My concern is I'll be doing some longer drives (5hrs) so I need something comfortable for that length of time.
You might wanna try these seats with the 3 point and see how that works out for you unless the series you plan to compete in requires more. Harness bar could be a non-issue.
Good luck!

I did order the padded cover for it and to be honest its pretty comfortable. I am not sure about a 5 hour drive comfortable but Ill know more after this weekend.
I want to be safe in the seats and held in place really well. This thing has a lot of traction and it throws you around the cab pretty good. Good Seat and good harness are worth its weight in gold for this stuff.
Had a little time in the shop last night, well enough to get frustrated with a few things then get over it. I really want to get some harnesses to hold me into the seat for track days but I also dont want this to turn into a track truck only and a full cage gets pretty hard to live with on a day to day basis.
So here is the aftermath.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160314_195504_zpsqucfsvh5.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160314_195504_zpsqucfsvh5.jpg.html)

The plan is to run some support rods from the center of the bar down next to the seats and tie into the floor to add some triangulation. All mounts will be double shear and it should be more than sufficient to hold me in place and deal with the forces of any crash. The tube is 1.75 .120 wall DOM not some lightweight weenie stuff that I have seen other bars built from.
Also since I was going gung ho on the Brakes, I figured the rear needs an upgrade as well. So I ordered the rear caliper brackets for the GT500 rear brakes and some new rear rotors for the GT500 stuff. Rear will be 13.8" now.
Hope to get this wrapped up tonight and get the truck back road worthy with the seat bolted in and the harness bar in place.

How far off the ground do you plan on making this?

How far off the ground do you plan on making this?
The truck itself?
It has about 3.5" of ground clearance to the lowest point and that is the bottom of the cross member and the bottom of the old radius arm mounts. Bigger tires are going to raise it up a little bit too.

I did a lot of reading on harness bars before building this, and saw a few of them that had actually collapsed in the center from an impact. I do not want that to happen and want to be safe so I built this to tie in the center to the floor boards.
I think it turned out really well, is very unobtrusive into the passenger area and is still keeping it classy.
I got everything welded out last night and even got a few things painted. I need to get the main bar painted and install everything. I need to break in the brakes and make sure all is still functional and the damn thing stops.
I got some brake ducting from Summit last night, probably will not be permanent but should have something rigged up for the front brakes.

Well good news and bad news. I got the pads bed in last night and holy **** does this thing stop, and that is with the stock rear rotors on it, should get a little better with the 14's on the back. I have to adjust some rear bias as the fronts were able to lock up pretty easy now but not going to adjust it until I get the rears on there.
The pedal feel is actually quite a bit improved from before, a little stiffer a little higher off the floor so all around pretty damn happy.
Hanging out between runs after letting the pads cool down.

The bad news is that I cannot keep a damn power steering belt on this bitch. This time it just flew off, there was no evidence of any kind of damage to it other than the chew marks where it hit the stock belt.
Apparently Ford offers a tensioner kit and pulley to work with the AC pump, so I ordered that, hope it shows up tomorrow, if not I think I am screwed for the weekend.
Handling and braking on this old turd is incredible, you would never know you were in an old truck unless you got out and looked at the inside.
Seating is much better, I am lower in the cab with more leg room and its pretty comfy too. Not sure I am ever going to take it out.

No sir, like everything else on the truck all built from scratch in my garage.
So I bought 2 belts, got one installed, changed the oil and filter tonight....no metal in this one =) and got these little guys installed in the front bumper. I did not have much choice in the placement of them as they needed to be outside of the framerails as I would not be able to get the ducts under the frame without them really dragging on the ground or getting in the way of the engine or steering. Now to figure out how to get the hose between the wheel, tire, sway bar, strut, coil spring and all that crap.

Looks pretty cool.
Took the truck to dinner, without issue this time with the wife. I have a tough time driving this thing not like an idiot and its fast. Not supercar fast, but damn fast for an old pickup truck.
I wanted to see what she thought of it so we found a little back road and did some spirited acceleration and braking. One time of that and she wanted out of the truck. It does good 1,2 burnouts even with granny shifting the thing and comes to a stop right now... It was awesome =)
Gotta get my **** together and make sure I can tow the trailer with the camper and the extended stinger now.

That is a deeper conversation that just one post my friend.....Let me clarify.
I bought the tube, the heims and the inserts. I bent up the tube off of my plans and drawings, Cut out the brackets, built the links with bungs and tube I bought and welded it all up.
It was not a kit that I bought from a shop or prefabricated from someone else trimmed to fit.
I ordered in a new power steering pulley last night and it somehow showed up this morning at Oreiley's....,.,I never buy anything there but they said they could get it there in the morning and they actually did that. It was the right one to boot.
While I was at my normal parts store visiting my buddy Andrew, I asked about a proper pulley installation tool and looked around on his shelf of tools and low and behold there was a whole kit that had the 8x1.25 one in it that I needed. So I got my crap and headed on my way. I used my Garage heater (Hair Drier and a Towel) to heat up the pulley. You would not believe how hot it will get things, hotter than it should.
The pulley installer was key, and I think was my problem all along (Hopefully) It has a bolt that threads into the pump, then a thrust washer, a bearing and then the threaded rod and press portion. It takes all the rotational torque out of the equation. Got it all ready and with the hot ass pulley, I tossed it on there, got the tool installed and pressed on the new pulley, there was no drama like the first time, no washers getting stacked up. I guess you live and learn.
The pulley went on at least 1/4" or more further than the last one. I am pretty sure that was causing some alignment issues. That combined with a much higher quality belt, I never new that Gates made a regular 6 groove and a green label six groove belt, there is a difference in the backing, the depth of the grooves and the thickness of the belt as well. Still learning.
Got the belt routed and installed and fired it up with no drama. Also finally installed the covers on the battery while I had that disconnected, looks more finished now than before.
Also got some brake ducts installed, not happy with them at all but they should work for the weekend no problem.
So a trip around the block filled up with fuel and onto the trailer.
First time towing with the camper, the hitch extension and the trailer, truck did remarably well considering that there was a massive headwind all the way out here.

Thanks for following along everyone.
What a weekend...my instructor for the day on Sunday was Peter and he is a very, very experienced driver and racer. I was fortunate to have him as I know him from the Volvo world and he was eager to see what I and the truck could do.
It was a whirlwind schedule, drivers meeting, then classroom, then on track, then classroom, then on track then classroom. We were hustling all day long from about 7 am to about 4 pm when the rain really rolled in hard and I put the truck on the trailer.
I learned a ton, both on the track and in the classroom. I am getting more comfortable in the truck each time its on the track and my efforts to fix things are paying off big time. I had no power steering issues, even on the rev limiter by accident a few times, no leaks or other issues. The brakes performed awesome. The switch to the bigger front rotors and calipers was impressive, late braking was much easier and the motul dot 4 660 fluid, and brake ducts did their job and there was zero brake fade all day.
Truck was an absolute blast on the track, it just kept getting faster and faster the harder we pushed it, its very well balanced and turn in is excellent. We were both impressed at just how quick the truck could go around the track. So was the guy in the c7 corvette that had a rearview mirror full of 68 ford pickup for lap after lap =)
Another epic weekend. The wife had a great time, we got to use the camper, the truck , the trailer and spent a weekend at a beautiful track.
I would call it a total success!!!! Not to mention beating the snot out of the truck and all I did was check the lugnuts all day.

Messing around with this all day on the track was just stupid fun for us. Probably not being driven to its limits as we were both in group 1, but he had a lot of track experience and the car was fast. He could pull on me just al ittle on the front straight when he was really getting into it, but I could reel him in in the first couple of corners after that and be right on his rear bumper. I am sure I dont have a chance against some of the fast guys in a fast car but it sure was fun.

I did get rid of the Volvo, I don't have enough room to store any more than I have right now.
I love the rear suspension and so far it is up to the task of track days and handles extremely well. No regrets.
I am not too sure what I would do. Likely, a 2013 mustang rearend again, I like it and the rear suspension very well. I like the coyote as well but you don't really need much from the donor car.
Trans is a turd. I would either do a t-56, a Richmond, a Liberty or something along those lines over the MT-82.
That would also allow me to run a more conventional rear driveline.
All in all though, I am pleased with the end result, not necessarily the blown up motor in the garage =)
So no rest for the weary....well, I wanted to get these done before the weekend but just did not get around to it.
Stock 2012 mustang rear brakes to begin.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160321_170435_zpsfes5higg.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160321_170435_zpsfes5higg.jpg.html)
Rearend has to come apart in order to change the backing plates, to I leisurely pulled the diff cover, center pin, c lips and slid the axles out and cleaned them up. Pulled the stick brake brackets off the axle and bolted on the FORD GT500 brackets on. $60.00 each I believe.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160321_191441_zpsebpt8bo7.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160321_191441_zpsebpt8bo7.jpg.html)
Got those on both sides and put the diff back together, it needed a fluid change any way...no it really did. The cool thing was that this setup used the OEM mustang caliper and the GT500 bracket and rotors.
Got the rotors back on and bolted the calipers on as well. That is a 13.8" rear rotor.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160321_194904_zpsrand0pvm.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160321_194904_zpsrand0pvm.jpg.html)
18" wheels, 14" rotors in the rear.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m588/hackster1/Coyote%20F100/20160321_202121_zpstgodusmn.jpg (http://s1133.photobucket.com/user/hackster1/media/Coyote%20F100/20160321_202121_zpstgodusmn.jpg.html)
I did it mostly because I wanted a bigger rotor, not for any kind of additional stopping power. Should give me a little better rear braking as well.
Going to run out of stuff to do soon :D

Yes sir. Factory mustang brake hooked up to the F100 foot pedal. Thinking about doing a floor mounted e brake though so I can do some kick panels with speakers in them =)
How was the show....I stopped in your booth but did not see anyone I know in there, Tan truck looked bad ass.

I went on thursday and spent 3 or 4 hours walking around and ended up not going back. Aaron was there alot over the weekend but he was probably not at the booth the whole time. The tan truck was pretty popular, its a cool truck I wouldn't mind having it myself! Im having a hell of a time finding rear brakes for my camaro, I have a bunch of weird issues to work around and im about to just put drum brakes on the back.. behind 20 inch wheels, kind of a sin haha:sieg:

Had a great weekend, went to the late night drags on Friday night for a little bit and drove the truck, no issues.
Headed to cars and coffee and got to talk to some great folks and see some killer cars. A few real standouts.

Followed him back from Cars and coffee and took advantage of his street to warm up the tires =)

Cruiser is just damn cool. Think of it as a restomod FJ40. Its new, painted, plated and powdercoated everything, top to bottom and is top notch. I did some of the metal fab on it and welded up the cage all the rest has been him and he needed a hand starting it. He wanted nothing to do with it so Ole and I got to work and got it fired up. It has a really cool Fuel injection setup on it and after getting the distributor in the right spot we got it fired up and broke in the cam and stuff.
His shop is pretty rough too.....what an awesome place to work.

Got a chance to bed in the rear brake pads and mess with the rear bias. I overdid it and got the rears to lock up a bit. Made one more adjustment and think Ill get it pretty close. Truck stops though, no doubt about that.
Swapped out the seat for the other one tonight as I need to do a little around town driving this week with the nice weather. Fending off a cold right now.
Big swap meet this weekend so doubt much progress.
Need to get Harnesses, Tires and a stereo before Vegas.

I used plastic. Its actually called PVC Foam Board. I would use it again in a heartbeat. It doesnt weigh much and it is very easy to work with and gives a very nice finish when completed. Thinking about building my kick panels out of them since its easy to build up and work with.
That said, is anyone running a hand e brake where there used to be a foot brake?

Have you checked mileage on the truck?
You had mentioned transmissions. Obviously Richmond has a 5 and 6 speed, and the T56 is a 6 speed. Is there a strength factor associated with the richmond 5 speed vs the t56? What reasons would there be with going for the .xx overdrive gear instead of the richmonds 1:1 5th?

Have you checked mileage on the truck?
With the weather we've been having in the NW (and a new dodge truck :poke:) I'm sure it's getting more street miles. With that being said the truck may have more track time than street time...with it being a new build and the driver having a heavy right foot....mileage may be unknown.
I'd bet you could see 20+ out on the highway just cruising along in 6th gear.
hackster
04-06-2016, 11:38 AM
No idea on the mileage yet, but around town it seems to be pretty good. I can actually check it on the next tank since its been around town and some highway miles as well.
Dan is right, I have been beating on it pretty good and most of the miles on it have been at the track. The 1:1 5th gear on a 5 speed would be pretty useless for me. I top out right around 120 in 4th gear at the limiter. I need some taller tires to help with that.
If I do a tranny swap, I will also need to do gears in the rearend as these tranny's are geared a little funny to work with the 3.31 rearend that comes in these cars and that is part of the reason they get great mileage on the highway.
The new dodge huh......truck has been in the shop getting worked on more times than any other car I have ever owned, oh and you have to pay for the rental car, no loaner on a $50k truck still under warranty. We will not be getting another new dodge anytime soon. This time it is in for a check engine light, code P20EE, they are saying that it has a bad catalytic converter, it also needs fuel filters and the injectors cleaned....some covered under warranty, others not.
Keep in mind, the truck has 33,000 miles on it and has been very well maintained. Truck has had 17 warranty recalls performed to date. Also the computer has been replaced and reflashed several times now, the radio module has been replaced, overhead lights and console replaced, fuel filler neck failed on the road so the tank was dropped and that was replaced as well.....you could not get diesel into the tank at that time.
We got this truck because I was tired of constantly having to work on my personal rigs to drive them for work. This thing is awesome to drive but horrible to own and maintain.
Looks like I might have a whole fleet of fords soon enough =)
Been working on some interior stuff the past week or so, will have a stereo soon as well =)
Maybe Ill get some pics up and bump this thread.
I did teach myself how to build and use a buck for metal forming, its pretty damn cool if I dont say so myself.
Happy Wednesday everyone!!!

Sean, it seems that maybe you can build a better truck than the Dodge/Ram/Chrysler (I would include Ford here too, based on experience with an F250 p-stroke) people. Perhaps a super-cool towing-capable vehicle build is in your future . . .

How about a Bump or Dent side quad cab build? Big block LS, 4L80E.
.
So, how many miles total do you have on this truck? Does the other truck get driven at all any more?

We knew you had it in you, Sean. I also know how you wind up telling yourself that a new truck will be (so much) better than a tractor-like 12-valve in so many ways, but then wind up looking back and deciding that a bulk investment in Dynamat and creative gearing would have been better. It's just the way we motorheads must roll . . .
Trying out a Corvette and a BMW 5-series has led me back to a 1963 Ranchero, in so many ways . . .:slingshot:
On a side note, I miss the 1973 W200 I sold a few years ago (to get a stupid F250 p-stroke). It rode better than the F250 on its 37-inch Toyos. There's always next time . . .
Dig the Pirate thread--I love that site!

Thanks guys....I may have gone back to my 12 valve roots. Will know more tonight.
Been tinkering with the truck the last few weeks but also working a bunch.
Started messing around with a better stereo setup in it a few weeks back. Trying to keep it super simple and clean, you can tell that is kind of how I roll by now
I took the back corner pieces apart and cut some giant holes in them. I wanted a custom looking setup and have some interest in wood working and making some bucks.
I built a male and female buck that I could put in my press and press my own speaker grilles to exactly fit the holes I cut without any mounts or screws to show. Kind of OEM looking.
Took a couple tries but I got it to work out.

Well, got everything loaded up and hit the road this morning. Weather has been nice for what seems like months. Weather apparently moved in last night so I got to deal with this for about 150 miles. There was a number of times I could not see anything in front of me, keep in mind, big ass truck camper in the bed, extended hitch trailer and the f100 behind me.

Sorry forgot to update this earlier this week.
Vegas went ok. I need to work on my driving more than the truck to be totally honest. There were some brutally fast cars and very good drivers there.
I held my own overall but did pretty poor on the AutoCross and Track Day portions.
I finished 10th overall out of 23 in my class of GTV. Keep in mind most of these guys have been racing for years and years. The truck does well in the Design and Engineering portion of the event. 6th out of 23 is pretty good for a truck that has its original ****ty paint and some rust holes here and there.
Some rediculous cars there as well. Dusold's camaro has 850HP on a full tube chassis...you can start to see I am a bit out of my league here, but still having fun.

Sitting in line waiting for the Speed Stop Challenge, you can see some killer cars I am lined up with. Pretty fun to even be able to hang with these guys in my old truck.

Our Road Rally took us down the main strip, it was brutal, hot and we were in bumper to bumper traffic for 2 hours.
Cool as hell though to see all that stuff and from the seat of the truck.

My buddy Martin has this killer wagon, it has a 535 hp 427 crate engine in it and hauls the mail!!! Well his 35 amp alternator, yes you read that right 35 amp would not keep up with the heat, the fans, lights and stuff in all that traffic and finally killed the battery. So we hung out here on the side of the road for a couple of hours until someone could bring us a battery and we could get Martin home safe.

That is what this event is all about for me. Making new friends, getting some seat time and having fun, I dont think I will ever be right at the top but hope the more seat time I get the better I can place.
This Holden was super cool, it looks like it is a real Holden brought in from Australia and sounded rowdy!!

Ordered some proper wheels for it when I got back. Just finished measuring them up and am going to get bigger tires this go around as well. 295/40/18 on an 11" wheel
Messed around with the coilover setting for a few moments last night and stiffened it up in the front 3 clicks and will do the same for the rear. I need to swap the springs all the way around to stiffer rates and likely get a smaller rear sway bar.
I have a track day all day Friday, should be fun, its at my "Home" track PIR.

Thanks for posting pics of two cars that can give you so many bad ideas: that AMX and DuSold's Camaro. They're about enough to make you put the bed in front of the cab, then put a hood on the bed, turning it into a shoe with rear-weight bias. Bad ideas . . .
It sounds like you had a good time--you got to soak up the strip in style!

I read that whole truck build because I love those old Cummins trucks. I had a 2012 Cummins, and never had a problem with it. Recalls done on oil changes. In and out. Other than the steering one. You have some great builds, including this one. Thanks for sharing! Is the racing easier on the body?

I signed up for the Cascade Car club track day and instruction a week or so ago. Headed up to the class portion with Doug Bockman (sp). He put on a good class and went over a lot of the same stuff as the team continental class I took a few months ago. He went a little more in depth on car control and I took a good bit from his class.
We had 4-30 minute sessions on Friday at PIR, first two were in the rain. I was pretty bummed at first running in the rain but it turns out I got some really great car control lessons with the wet weather. Leaning how to keep the rear out without spinning it out, over correcting or lifting. After 60 minutes of in the rain I had a pretty good handle on getting around in the rain, it was slow, three cars went into the wall hard that day.
Third and Fourth sessions were in the dry and awesome. Truck worked well, track was fast, I picked up a lot about exit speed, getting on the gas faster. Slow in, Fast out is starting to mean something.
I tightened up the front coilovers 3 clicks and softened up the rear a couple and the truck was better, front end had a lot less dive and the truck was pretty balanced. I was able to get the rearend out on some faster corners but it was very predictable and controllable.
4th session I tracked down the fast car in the group a new z-28 and we did 6 or 7 laps around the track with me on his ass. He could pull me a little bit on the front straight but I could reel him in on the corners. We had a great time and passed our fair share of cars.
We talked after the session and he was impressed, could not believe I was able to hang with him the entire time.
I still need a lot more work, truck needs a little bit but I am getting better and more confident.
Onto a few pics I snapped.

Funny part was I loaded it up with a bunch of steel, tubing bender and a hydraulic ram today and did a bunch of running around.
Love this truck.

I did a couple of track sessions in the rain last weekend and learned a ton as well. Then in the semi dry session after I put what I learned to use and ti really showed. I loved driving the track in the wet, was giggling like a school girl when I came off track.
Curious if you made any adjustments to truck between the wet and dry session? I ran the exact same setup on both and seemed to be just fine.

Some of the best driving lessons I've received/learned from - was at DirtFish.... not only is it wet - it's gravel... you finally figure out how to control the car with just the loud pedal and begin to enjoy looking out the side windows! LOL
This truck is so kool - but YOU learning to drive it is way kooler!

Nice job on the truck! It's looking better and better every time I see it, so basic, clean and just does what it's supposed to. The white with black wheels is just about my favorite color combo, diggin the canopy as well. :action-smiley-027:
I've got to schedule my track day at SIR (Actually Pacific but I'll never call it that) you should come up and show me how to drive.

And here I thought you were giving the auto hobby a break and going biking/hiking? Hope you have had time to work in a few here and there.
But I'm glad you picked it back up. I came to this site (from Tbricks) following the other Ford. Now this one. Well done! Really cool truck!
ps got the Volvo running! Finally!

Nonhog....that is awesome about the Volvo. Its about time =)
Thanks everyone else for the comments. I ran the setup three clicks softer in the rain and it seemed to really help out all around letting the truck move before it just broke loose.
Have gotten the truck out to two track days in the past few weeks. Last one was Friday night at the SCCA Tracks Night in America. We had Rain all week, then Friday was overcast and dry, it was meant to be. Got in three sessions and the truck did very well, getting faster each time out so I am learning my way around a track finally.
After the first fast session there was a crowd of suprised onlookers checking the truck out when I got back to the Paddock. Lots of questions and thumbs up and more than a few suprised fellow car guys there on track with me.
There was one car that I just could not hang with and that was a new hellcat on new Toyo r888 tires. Car was damn fast. I held my own with everyone else out there though, worked my way around a handful of Subaru's, Sti's, BMW's, 2 CTSV's and a few others. The truck works very well.
Here are a couple of photos from the last two track days cause everyone likes pictures.
First time with the truck in the rain....I was not happy but learned a ton about car control, it was a blessing in disguise actually.

The Subaru behind me was very fun car to play with. It had a full STI swap in it and was pretty quick. I ended up getting around him but we had several laps of fun before hand.

And then there was this guy. 2015 z28. Car is just plain bad ass. He could pull on me by a car or so down the front straight but I could reel him back in through the corners. We had some traffic and both made it around them and got in a good 7 or 8 laps of me pushing him around the corners and him dragging me down the straights it was very, very fun.
This photos was at the end of the longstraight away into turn 4 at PIR.

I dragged my friend Chris in his Dinan tuned 335i out with me this past friday and we had an absolute blast at the track. His car is quick....he was not expecting the truck to be as fast as it was at all.

So how does the truck work. After 5 track days including two Optima weekends I think the truck works pretty well. Its not a full tilt race car, its still an old truck.
I am pushing it pretty hard and its taking it. I need to work on getting the right springs on it and stiffening up the sway bar on the front a bit. It has a little body roll in the corners but you dont feel it in the truck at all, just in photos. I would like it to be a little flatter into the corners though.
It turns extremely well and corner exits are very good, I actually make up a fair bit of time on corner exit speed, the power cones on fast and the truck dead hooks once its through the corner and settled.
I am getting too much heat in the front pads and glazing the pads and rotors so I am going to try some other brake pads this week and see if that helps. I am running AC Delco Ceramic pads for the c5 vette. I think I am going to try some Hawk pads now, not too sure what to go with as i am driving the truck, tracking it and autocrossing it all in close proximity to the other.
Ill try and do a better job of keeping the thread updated. Have not been working on much lately so not much to report other than using the old girl exactly like I built it to be used.
