Hi all.
New here. Figured this would be a good place to document a build that Myself and my friend Matt are undertaking along with UTP Racecars (www.utpracecars.com (http://www.utpracecars.com)).
A 1963 AMC Rambler Classic Coupe.
The body: Will remain mostly stock with a few subtle alterations like a front valance, and removed inner lights for intake ducting and possibly a rear spoiler.
The drivetrain: LM7 and 4l60e with goodies coming for both.
The chassis/suspension: Mustang II front end, Ridetech Coilovers, 4-link rear on a custom narrowed Ford 9"
The wheels: Boze Forged Clutch 18x8 up front and Boze Forged Clutch Concave 18x10 in the back.
The current weight is right at 2800lbs with stock driveline in the vehicle. It has about a 56/44 weight distribution also. The goal is to keep it right around 2650-2800 lbs after all is said and done.
Progress so far: obtained the new driveline components, removed the old heavy cast iron I-6 and transmission from the Rambler.

The hefty I-6 out. Know anyone interested in a very low miles running powertrain? It's for sale!
Fuel tank removed along with fuel lines and exhaust.

Great project and love the wheels. What specifically will you be using for suspension? I in your first post where you said MII and 4-link, but wondering about more details? Would a Roadster Shop universal IFS clip or the DSE X-Gen front clip fit with mods?

Entire front suspension has been removed by Matt, Brian and myself and the tires have been mounted to wheels at this point.
Here are some pics of the front wheel being mocked up. It will likely sit 1.5-2 inches higher than this pic. (Ran out of wood to lift the tire/wheel higher into the fender well. Should have decent room for turning clearance.

Hey Sean,
The tires are CONTINENTAL EXTREMECONTACT DW's. I would not consider them a great performer for autocross tires.
My account on instagram is kcoxphoto for those who want more frequent updates on the build!
Thanks for the support guys.
Looking at brakes right now, but dang they are expensive! any recommendations for a cost effective brake setup around 12.8-13"?

Depending on your hubs and bolt pattern, user tubbed69 has a great deal on a full new Wilwood brake setup on the 2nd page in the parts for sale classifieds on this site right now.

Thanks Wes. I checked them out, unfortunately won't work with my setup. Got to have something that will bolt to a Mustang II drop spindle.
looking at Wilwood 6R's that are 13" for the front and some 12.18"s for the rear.

Quick update. Ordered all parts for the front suspension. Doing a Heidts narrowed mustang II crossmember along with Heidts upper and lower tubular control arms, 2" mustang drop spindles and a power steering rack from a t-bird because of it's width. I'll do a quick video when the parts arrive.
Rear end work should be completed this weekend or early next week at UTP Racecars (http://www.utpracecars.com).

Here are the width specs: Overall width is 45-1/8". 15-1/2" mount centers.
The year T-Bird it's from is 1982-88.

Update without images.
So, a lot has happened since I last posted. We are teaming up with Wilwood Brakes on the build! The front end is being mocked up and installed this weekend. The rear end is also being mocked up this weekend. Custom axles have arrived from Moser, the Ford 9" has been narrowed, the ridetech 4 link is ready to roll. Center section is going to be an Auburn Posi unit with a 3.73 gear. That is getting picked up tonight.
The ride height has officially been set.
Also, the Ididit steering column has just arrived. Since the build is an automatic and I did not want to place a large console in the floor, we are utilizing a column shifter.
Here are the Wilwood components that are on their way:

This weekend we got a good amount accomplished on the car. The differential got finished and installed (3.75 Roush/Fenway Trac-Lok Posi Diff with polished gears), we centered the axle, cut out a portion of the trunk, mounted the upper shock mount bar, Brian welded the 4 link hardware to the 9” and to the chassis, and installed the parallel 4 link bars. Front suspension has already been mocked up on the floor.
Tonight the front shock towers get cut out to make some space. The front cross-member is going to be welded in later this week (as soon as the brakes arrive to confirm clearances). Brian hopes the car will be rolling with a suspension and working steering within 2 weeks.
And I found an NOS grille for the car for a decent price.
A small video of the work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvNCVsnhxgA .

Thanks, and yes it is moderately light by some folks standards. It weighed 2800 before we starting tearing it apart. We aim to keep it around 2800-2900 lbs with the LS. The original iron 6 cylinder was HEAVY.

Brian at http://www.utpracecars.com welded in the Heidts Mustang II front Cross-Member and mounted the control arms so we could determine how the wheel would turn within the front fender wells.
Here are some progress pics and some welding pics of Brian.

What is the name of the Facebook page? I'd love to post up that perfect running condition driveline that I have out of this car for sale as well as the red wheels and rambler hubcaps.
UPDATES:
We accomplished quite a bit more this weekend on the car. Front 2pc brakes have been fully assembled with loctite and the front hubs have been packed with grease. Front drop spindles were painted chassis black. Front brake flex lines have been installed. Brian clearanced out the front frame area for Coilover fitment. Installed front Coilovers. The steering rack threaded ends have been narrowed and the steering rack was installed. Panhard bar setup has been installed to keep the rear axle centered from side-to-side.

This weekend at UTP Racecars (http://www.utpracecars.com) , we mounted up the ididit column and NRG innovations quick release hub, and steering wheel. Also placed the seats in where we plan to mount them.

This weekend we assembled the rear end and brake components (finally got the correct backing plate for the parking brake), installed the rear coilovers, and set the ride height. Brian finished up welding up the steering linkage and installing the U-joints as well. We dropped the car off the frame table and rolled it outside to see what she would look like on the ground.
Tonight, powertrain mock-up begins.
And here is post altitude adjustment:

Sorry for the lapse in updates. Slowly but surely making progress!
Since the last time I updated you, lots of metal work has happened. Minitubs have been completed along with some trunk modifications. Firewall is being smoothed, which includes welding all holes in the firewall, bondo, and sanding. Brian welded in supports from the cowl area at the firewall to the areas where the strut towers used to be. Brian modified the front uni-frame stubs to make room for the front swaybar. He also added in subframe connectors from the rear 4 link front mounts to the front uni-frame. I installed the master cylinder and Camaro booster to the firewall and brain made slight modifications to the pedal setup. The rear-end is final assembled after returning from powder coating. Motor and Trans mounts have been fabricated with the mock-up powertrain in place.
The engine is in Texas at Scoggin Dickey Racing for an overhaul. Radiator is getting picked up tonight. I had the radiator specially made to my dimensions which include an A/C condenser, Trans cooler, and fans/shroud. Wiring and fuel system has all arrived and is sitting at home on my kitchen table. The underside of the car is getting sprayed in matte black Lizard Skin which is a sound deadener and sealer. Once this chassis work is done and suspension is installed, the car is getting trailered to a close friends to complete the wiring, plumbing, and final build checks.

LOL Tony. I may have to pick that up.
We were back at it again this weekend. The undercoating and engine bay paint completely dried. That allowed us to final assemble the suspension, start running brake lines, and get the car on the ground. We started to bang out the bumper dings one by one and Brian mocked up a front valance. Brian replaced the front floor due to a couple rust holes and also put in a larger trans tunnel for the 4l60e. That got sealed/painted also. The seat frame mounts have been started and should be in by tonight. Engine is arriving midweek.

Big milestone for the Ramblur project this weekend; the car left UTP Racecars to head to the final wiring and assembly location.
Started on the engine harness this weekend as well.
Here are some pics of the Ramblur in its glory sitting on the ground:

Keep in mind the car does not have a fuel tank installed, battery, fuel lines, brake lines, carpet/dynamat, nor fluids. Should be close to 3000 when all is said and done with a 54/46 weight distribution.

Sorry about the lapse in updates! There was a big lull in the project, and it has been sitting dormant for over three months. A big commitment was broken by the current shop and that is the reason why I am transferring shops currently. The Ramblur is going to get finished by a shop in Alma, Michigan called Republic Metal Works. Look for updates coming soon as they will be working on the car immediately when it is dropped off the first week in January!
@jmking: i'm not positive on the backspacing of the wheels since it's been over a year since I ordered them. They are Boze Forged Clutch Concave wheels with a gunmetal center and polished lip.

Thanks Zak!
Loving the work that Republic Metal Works is doing on the car. They have already done more in the last two weeks than the previous place in 5 months.
A small rust hole in the firewall has been repaired (looks factory). The cowl trough has been replaced. The Vintage Air Unit is mounted in place and several custom-fabbed mounts were made. The customer wiper motor setup is mocked up and ready to be powered up. Wiring is in process.
Excited to see this thing on the road in the spring!

You are not kidding. Grilles are impossible to find for these things. That grille is an NOS grille that I snagged on ebay. Someone had it up for an astronomical amount of money, and I offered them less than half of what they were asking and they agreed.
I still have the original grille, although it has a crease.

Update time. We went out to visit Republic Metal Works last weekend to see what they got done the past few weeks. They completed rust repairs including a replacement of the cowl tray. They also mocked-up and installed the vintage air unit under the dash. Wiring is deep in progress right now, PCM is installed in the glovebox along with fuse block. This will be nice and easy to access if necessary. A nice looking split intake is being custom made to utilize both open running lamp holes. Also considering doing a partial cage while the interior is apart to utilize for belts. Detroit Speed is now a sponsor of the Ramblur project, we will be utilizing their battery relocation kit. Looks beautiful and should distribute the weight a bit better.
