This is what I started with.

https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-QBM98vg/0/931d1136/XL/i-QBM98vg-XL.jpg

Stripped it down with straightforward plans to put a 4.6 in and some suspension mods

When I started the build I only had two kids. Now I have 4!

Patiently waiting for the rest....In the mean time, what's going on at the back of the car in the picture? I see the bumpers been molded into the body, is the trunk extended and the taillight panel recessed?

It was an unexpected by product. Once the bumper and all was welded and molded in, the tail light pan appears recessed but I think we actually left it in the factory position. We added some metal to the trunk lid lip. I'd honestly have to have it next to a factory one to point out all the differences. Would make for a good "Hocus Pocus" in the newspaper, if you remember that strip. Lol

Had to make the housings. There may be an easier way now, but at the time we had to build everything. Got the parts from http://www.watsons-streetworks.com/index.php?route=common/home

On the backseat panel and the console you have some "chrome" strips.
What are those made of ? is it polished aluminum rod or something else ?
I'm interested in making something like that.

Originally built to autocross. It's looking more and more like it's going to be for cruising and shows.

It's been a collaborative effort. About a year after I started the build I opened a shop. The design, drivetrain setup, electrical and assembly have been done by me. The metal work was done by Kelly Murphy and the paint was done by Larry Woodall. Jean-Noel at J-N-G Customs is doing the interior work.

Sad day in my household. Those that have followed my build since the beginning know that I went out and purchased this car as a project to busy myself after my father passed from cancer. His twin brother, my uncle Wally, went with me when I got the project and has encouraged me the whole build. I had planned for him to come up next month and take the first ride.

On January 4th he was hit head on by a driver going the wrong way down Interstate 295 in Jacksonville, Fla. He passed away on the 8th. His entire adult life was dedicated to helping others, from being a medic in Vietnam to running the tissue donor bank (he was returning from performing a case), he always had a good joke to tell and tried to help whenever possible. Life is short, make the best of it and if you're out drinking and having a good time.........think about this post and take a cab home.

Sorry to hear about your uncles passing. My cousin went with me to Nebraska to get my wife's project a few years ago. He passed away 6 months later. I will always remember the time spent on the road with him and the talks/fun we had during that trip.

His wife later told me he cherished the time and had a great time. I'm sure your uncle had a great time and enjoyed every minute spending it with you.

God bless you and your family!

Very sorry to hear this sad news. Such a needless tragedy. I haven't had a drink for almost 32 years now... and I'm always the DD in our "group". As we've all aged - my friends are responsible enough now to start to drink water an hour or more before they know they're hitting the road. So there is "improvement" on drunk driving, just not enough.

Both our kids have our Uber account so they can use that when they need it - and I know they do use it!

My condolences on your Uncle. Sounds like a great guy.

Interior looks killer.

I"ve struggled with the doors on these cars, I can't use the aftermarket full door panels that are sold because the roll bar hits the extended arm rest, and its way down on the project list to build one myself, but the bare metal part of the door always bothered me - I never thought of just upholstering the metal directly and then using a somewhat standard inner panel, great stuff there.

But beyond that the panel looks positively Bentley-ish. Was never really sure how a speaker would fit in there either, that's pretty amazing.

Do you have a picture of the inner door metal before mounting the speaker baffle ? I"m curious how much of a hole you cut there.

BTW, I'm a big mobile audio guy, can you detail out your system for us ?

TY. I used to do 12 volt audio for a living back in the 90's. To answer your questions:

Not too big a hole. Just slightly bigger than the magnet. It sits about an eighth inch away from the window frame. I was going to use waveguides to begin with but went away from that because of space concerns and making it look right. So, I am running a JL C5 3-way setup in the front. It's a 6 1/2 in the door and a 4 in and tweeter in the kickpanel. They get ran off of a JL HD600/4 which I ended up bridging to two channels. The subs are JL 13TW5v2-2 13" shallow mount subwoofers. They get driven by a JL HD1200/1. I used a Pioneer headunit that's mounted in the trunk. I control it with the Crestron system and will mostly just bluetooth to it. I am signed up for the Goodguys show in April (Raleigh, NC) and hopefully it will be all done :).

Sounds good.

Horns would look really cool and different and the EJS mini-horns would fit nice under the dash, but I put them in my truck and while the imaging is superb (especially compared to other options in a truck) I don't think they sound nearly as nice as the normal Hybrid Audio 3 way in my Cadillac. I"ve eq'ed the bright spots but they just don't have that soft smooth sound. Lots of other factors between the 2 vehicles but its like the difference between a tube and a solid state amp.

I really like what you've done with the interior, very inspiring for me.

Doing some detail work

Clamped the upper hoses. More on order for the other hoses

Power Steering has been one of the top 5 PITA's of this build. When I started this build Turn-Key was the only option. They send a plastic reservoir and it just hasn't worked well. Got two of these nice metal ones in with -AN fittings. 1 for the mustang and 1 for the truck. Works way better.

Spent a lot of time this week getting the windows adjusted correctly. Note for any future builds, stick with factory doors.

Painted the headlight trims black. Feel it looks a lot better

You are using re-pop doors ?

I used a door from NPD (I think it was dynacorn) and it was actually very nice. Of course after splitting it in half and widening it 2", maybe tweaking things to fit the glass didn't seem like a big deal. But really, everything fit pretty good I was impressed with it.

I love how you can build these cars out of a catalog now.

Turns out the issue is the glass. None of the glass was correct.

Congratulations on the award! We're really liking the color scheme on this. It seems that most mustangs these days are in brighter colors, so its nice to be reminded of how good dark colors can look as well!

Looking good !

did you wrap some thin leather around the inner door outside of the panels ? That's not just brown paint right ? I think I saw a picture of that, just wondering how you trimmed/rolled/cleaned up the outside edges including int the window jam.

I think I said this before but great job on the door panels those look really nice.

(ha ha you are thinking "all the work I did on this car and he's gushing about the door panels")

lol. It's all leather. Wrapped around. I am proud of how the door panels turned out too. It was my plan for awhile and I am glad it turned out great.

Something that didn't occur to me until someone brought it up this weekend............the car is entirely locally built. Obviously all the stuff I did but also the paint guy, Interior guy and part of the metal work that I farmed out was to local guys. Kinda proud of that :)
