A little history on this car.........The first Power Tour we went on was in 2005.....Started in Milwaukee and ended in Orlando.....There was a group of guy's that flew in from Australia to do the tour.....They flew into L.A. and bought this car and drove to Milwaukee....We got to meet them at a Party in Milwaukee before the Tour started.......LOL.....Wild group and a lot of fun........So......while in Milwaukee, the owner of the car met and got a girlfriend ......So.....After the Tour he drove the car back to the Milwaukee area to be with her..........He sold the car to a friend of mine in July of 05......Floyd had the car 10 years and kept it in a heated climate controlled environment........Labor Day weekend we were at a car show and noticed Floyd had the Car for Sale.......The rest is history......The car is a perfect California rust free piece that was gone thru in the early 2000's and built to what was normal back then.........LOL.....Just a couple weird things about the build back then......obviously the builder didn't want the A/C condenser in front of the polished radiator......so .....it was mounted parallel to the road behind the front bumper with an Electric fan blowing air thru it when required........except mounted in that position while driving down the highway it didn't work too good.....LOL........the other thing is with the Condenser mounted in that position ......there wasn't any room for the front sway bar........so......the car was a little wishy washy going down the road......all soon to be corrected along with a LSA drivetrain transplant..........So......Here we go again.........

Picture of when we picked up the car from Floyd

I forgot those "traction bars" were on there. Those have to go, all they are good for is binding up the suspension.

Don't forget, that steering box is new.

I think you said something along the lines of --- the brakes have been upgraded so they're good...

You're going to put in a 500+ HP motor -- and my '56 Nomad weighed 4,000 pounds....

I know you don't drive like a couple of other idiots you call friends :knock: .... but think about following Charlie - and we're cruising up the road (no speeds mentioned here) and he puts on the binders in one of his super cars.... His stopping distance will be FAR FAR shorter than yours.... so even if you had adequate distance off his back bumper... Well, just sayin'.

Just FYI --- On a tri-five chevy -- it's far easier to just pull the front sheetmetal off as a unit --- I tape a couple layers of green tape on the leading edge of the doors and the rear of the fenders and the edge of the cowl -- pull the hood -- There's one bolt (and some shims) at the top of each fender by the cowl -- and one at the bottom (and some shims) just ahead of the door..... two bolts (and some shims) at the core support -- three guys and walk it off.

I usually bolt them to those cheap ass furniture dollies you get at Harbor Freight and a 4 X 8 Sheet of plywood... cover it for protection and push it out of the way.

SO much easier then to access everything else.

A couple of neat things about this car..........whoever built the car in California originally did a great job with the install of the engine/trans..........the frame engine mounts are a work of Art.......and the trans has a tubular trans mount and frame mounts installed very professionally.........Gonna save a lot of fabrication and installation time getting the new drivetrain in..........Ended up very carefully taking the core support out........Pulled the headers off (Glad I never had to change the Spark Plugs on this puppy)..........dropped the trans out and then pulled the engine..........Now I can get the engine compartment Sparkling again.......

Got a few more parts today.......The new A/C condenser arrived along with the LSA fuel pump......The Pump and Nomad tank will be a little project from the other pumps I have modified, .....I had to make them shorter to match the depth of the Tanks.......This one I have to make it longer to work in the Nomad tank which is approx. 12" deep.........And....since the Engine is out I did a quick clean-up of the engine compartment...........Again.....Great Job by the person who originally built this car.....The new engine didn't make it to the shop today.........Gonna have to wait till next Monday now........I can do some serious cleaning now .................Happy Thanksgiving to All!!!!!

While waiting for the drivetrain to show up.........I have just been cleaning things.......Again.....What a car.....Just gonna make it LSA "Better"........Before and after on the rims .....then a shot of the engine compartment again......A couple of things that will be changed is I realized that the 9" Ford rear end in the car is an open rear end.......Posi-unit on the To Do List.........And since this car was built roughly 15 years ago......I think I am going to update the A/C system in the Dash to a newer version with the Electronic controls.......Gonna order a Kwik Performance Alternator/Power Steering Pump unit and get that part put to bed.....As you can see in the pic's also......Floyd just recently installed the Wilwood Brake system all around.......The Drivetrain should be delivered next Monday............

Still waiting for the Drivetrain to show up.......In anticipation of the new A/C set-up showing up.....I removed the Heater controls as they will be converted over to electronic controls.......I also removed the Gauge housing as I ordered all Dakota Digital gauges.......the gauge housing was chrome plated at some time in it's past and the chrome sort of faded away in some area's.......so....I'm going to paint it back to original.....sent the housing and the lower steering column cover out to the plater to get the chrome stripped off......then off to the paint shop for paint.....All the Dakota Digital stuff showed up today.......With the cluster out that gives me access to get the wiring all straightened out..........

Nice stuff Ken!!

Yeah - A reman part would pee me off too.... not that it's probably not a perfectly good part... it just isn't what I would CHOOSE to order.

Is it done yet??

I finally got the engine home (Thanks Gary !!).........So, the first thing I did was to swap out the stock oil pan for the Holley 302-1 pan.........Gotta love the new gasketing systems........a heck of a lot better than the old cork and rubber leakers......LOL...While changing the Pan I noticed that GM left out a plug in the block that was meant for the Integral Oil pan Oil Cooler .......The engine didn't come with that cooler so I don't understand why they didn't put it in.....not a big deal, but I had to order one and it mounts behind the motor mount adaptor plate and the motor mounts....so...If I install the engine and it just happens to work out that everything fits......I would have to take back out again to put that stupid plug in.......So....I started getting the new A/C system ready for install....then in looking at the original wiring and fuse panel under the dash, I decided to basically rewire the car and get away from the Glass Fuse system.........I was amazed at how simple the original fuse panel is with limited fusing and circuits.........I will leave the rear body harness alone and rewire the rest using an American Autowire Classic update system.........Oh Well........I have to do it correctly......with the dual fan set-up for cooling and the Intercooler pump,Fuel Pump and everything else that go's with the new drivetrain.......it just makes sense.......Also....I sent the dash cluster out for stripping of the Chrome.....It's stripped, now I need to get it painted for the Dakota Digital Gauge install.......

Some times I get comments about "Whining" too much..........But......I'm just documenting the reality of what happens during the build process......I'm just a "Garage" builder guy.........Just think of the Professionals that are building multiple cars at a time and think of the problems they have to deal with on a daily basis with purchased parts.....It really disrupts the "Flow" of the project.......

I have to second what Ken says. I've built a ton of cars at home using my own tools and hands in my cramped garage / shop, stuff rarely fits. The problem is magnified when you are trying to do things few people, if anyone has done before. I honestly don't understand how someone without decent fabrication skills can build a car without farming it out.

While waiting for the new wiring kit to arrive I converted the stock heater controls over to the Vintage Air electronic set-up......I could have installed the A/C unit but I figured it would have gotten in the way while rewiring....also while the engine was out.....I noticed that the frame mounts that were welded in by the original builder were not parallel to each other......and I noticed that the rubber engine mounts had taken a set to the angle being out of position........I figured that since it worked before...........LOL.......As you can see in the pictures the engine fits in the 57 perfectly with the stock Camaro exhaust manifolds .........got Lucky.....Till I went to put the motor mount bolts in...........Close but no cigar.........Gonna pull the engine back out and cut the mounts out and do it correctly..........Just can't put it together in that "Bind" condition.........

We are going to replace the "Old" with the "New"

Then........It's kind of hard to see how far out the frame mounts are......I made the Aluminum Jig to the 16.5" centerline as required and the mounts are way out.......I cut them out and will modify them correctly......

Also.....after test fitting the engine in the car.......It became apparent that my plan to mount the A/C compressor down low like I did in the Chevelle just wasn't going to work.......Darn......Mounting the compressor up high on a LSA engine is not that simple.........so.........I decided to bite the Bullet and buy a Concept 1 front drive system.........and with this system I had to remove the front snout assy from the engine so I can send it to Lingenfelter to get a new Hub installed on the Supercharger shaft for the Concept 1 Pulley......

I finally got the motor mount situation corrected.......Lets just say the old engine fit.......but it wasn't correct....I cut out the mounts and basically raised the mount position 1/4" to give me a little more pan clearance and made the mounts the same height relative to the frame (there was 3/16 difference)........I welded the spacer plate to the cut off mount......used my Jig and bolted the mounts in ......after everything checked out I welded them in......Side story........I have a good 110 volt Miller wire welder and got an education about extension cords......LOL.......I now have a new 12 Gauge wire one in the garage.........."I are Smart" now.........

In my heavily modified car I have basically zero room for an Hvac unit although i fit a small hot rod heater in there. Sometimes I take out the tape measurer and sigh while I try to determine if some tiny inefficient ac unit could possibly fit.

which is all a long winded way of saying I envy your giant A/C unit !

Sometimes taking a car like this and rebuilding it "the right way" is almost more fun than building from scratch.

In retrospect..........I can't even imagine trying to get all the electrical power required for this conversion thru the stock fuse panel.....Thanks to Donny Bock at AAW for pushing me into the rewire....In the mean time I have a good portion of all the wires run ......the mass of wires in earlier pictures are now in place and just need to be zip tied in place after getting the Dakota Digital modules wired and in place........I also have the new A/C unit installed under the dash and everything wired......the Supercharger snout should be coming back from Lingenfelter next week and the new front drive should be showing up also.....I also did some checking on Transmission dimensions and it looks like I have to move the trans mount back 3 1/2" on the frame from where the 700R4 was........Time to move the car's around and get the 57 up on the lift ........

Nothing worse than a nice car with those NASTY plastic A/C outlets!

When I was re-doing the '56 Nomad -- I found a pair of perfect OEM A/C outlets... IIRC I paid about $500 for the pair at a swap meet. Nobody made repops back then.

The problem was - the compound curves - and I wasn't exactly certain of their location. Since the car was painted - I wasn't about to just hack away and rework an area... So lucky for me - I found a dash from a '56 A/C, and get this, also factory PADDED!! I've never seen one (padded) in a car. I bought the whole dash - and then I could make a pattern from that and cut my dash, and they fit perfectly. I still have that dash... for no other reason than I've never seen one.

I'd also made a "console" out of wood and bondo and metal.... because I loved to drive that car and needed a cup holder!!! LOL

Man you move fast!

I started my fuel upgrade project about the same time you started this thread...

I just got my Corvette running again this week - but that fuel project snow balled into a clutch replacement, speed bleeder install, rear main cover and gaskets, and new input bearing!

Good work Ken!

So........I needed room to hide the ECM and the TCM along with the additional fuse panel.......The existing set-up in the car had the passenger side fresh air vent zip tied closed........As I was looking at getting that working again.........I thought how that area under the fender would make a nice out of the way mounting area for the modules if the vent tubes weren't there........So.....Guess what.......They are now gone (had to sawzall them in half)......I took out both sides as I will now use the drivers side for the Inlet air and a cold air set-up.........Perfect.....hated to cut up the perfect rust free vent tubes........But....I'll make up some block off plates to seal off the openings to keep the hot air out..Here are a couple of pic's

O.K.........Back at it..........Made a simple mounting plate for the control modules out of 1/4" plastic........Then I got it mounted in the fender well area so it is basically out of the way......Gonna make a mounting bracket for the GM supplied engine compartment fuse box.......I also got the trans cross member bolted in and got the engine drivetrain angle set......Need to make a couple 2 degree angle blocks to change the pinion angle to match the engine.......I also spun the engine over today to get some oil pressure......after getting all the wiring finished up next week I still need to deal with the fuel system......among other things....but...we are getting closer

Before I could finish up the engine compartment wiring......I had to close up the fresh air vent openings in the Firewall after removing the vent tubes for mounting space for the control modules......So....I made a couple plates to seal the holes today......Got the passenger side installed (LOL...No room to get at the upper screw as it is right behind the A/C unit.....Took awhile)......And........While I was at it.....I had another issue that was making me crazy.....After getting the basic engine wires hooked up, I turned the key to start and expected the engine to crank over......Nothing.......Humm!!.....Checked the wires at the neutral safety switch.......Power there.......Solenoid wire at the starter.....no power.....Call the Tech Line at American Autowire and explain the situation.....I was told to check the plug where the wire goes thru the firewall......I forgot about that....and it's tucked up behind the A/C unit......(Damm that thing)....finally get it to where I can see it and noticed that the power terminal wasn't snapped into the plug body all the way and when I plugged it in it pushed the spade out.......Duhhhh!!!! Starter now works correctly....also got the GM supplied engine compartment fuse panel installed .......and Time for a Nap!!

Im drooling over those gauges!

kwhizz
02-24-2016, 05:41 PM
So......Been an Interesting last couple of days........After getting the gauge cluster in and getting the starter solenoid issue resolved.......I spun the engine over and noticed I wasn't getting any oil pressure........Hummm!!!......Must have lost it's prime........So......I borrow a pressure oiler to prime the system.......it has an adapter that screws on in place of the oil filter that connects to the canister with a hose.......Add oil to the canister ......pressurize the canister with 100lbs air pressure and open the valve.......the pressure pushes the oil thru out the entire oiling system in the car........open the valve and turn the key on 40lbs oil pressure........Humm....That was easy......Take all the pressure stuff off and put the oil filter back on...(still filled with oil)......Spin the engine over........"0" oil pressure....,,.WTF !!!.........Put all the pressure stuff back on......40 lbs.........Spun the engine over with the 40 lbs pressure..........Take it off ......."0" again......Talk about getting depressed........So.......I spend a day thinking this thru......It seems that the only place this problem can be coming from is when I changed the Oil Pan and changed the oil pick-up tube.........the mounting of the pick-up tube to the pump is critical to get the "O" ring seated correctly ...........I was very careful in putting in the new tube and "O" ring, so.......I was not convinced that was were the problem was.......So......I get a hold of Gordon (Formula 88) and explain what's going on.......He did some research and sends me a link that shows some past similar issues with the wrong size "O" ring installed.........Humm !!!.........I just took the supplied "O" that came in the kit installed it and never gave it a second thought.......But....It was the only answer that made any sense........So.......Other that the fuel system the car is a day away from running and now I have to take it apart to check a stupid "O" Ring.......Spent the day today taking the car apart.........Ha!!..........The tube was seated perfectly.......pulled the tube down and the "O" ring was in perfect condition........then I checked it with the old one that was on the GM pickup tube......... Basically 1 mm difference in size......the "O" ring supplied with the pan was smaller..........Darn !!!!........All this work for a stupid "O" ring.......But....I get it back together ........Put the pressure oil primer on .....take it off...put the Filter on and spin the engine over........Bingo.......Oil Pressure..........Some times the littlest things cause the biggest problems.............

Well !!!!..........I got another education today..........Got a call this morning at the shop from Coy........an Engineer from Holley........He wanted to know what and how everything transpired in my Dilemma...So.....I explained everything to him and how I felt the "O" ring was the cause of the issue.........O.K...He said !!.......I explained how I measured the tube and it was the same size as the Holley tube and since they were the same size I concluded that the smaller "O" was the issue.........He then asked if I still had the GM pick-up tube and was it tapered.........In my mind I was thinking a lead in style taper, .....And I measured the end and it measured .875 the same as the Holley tube........So....I told him I had it at home and I could measure it again and send him the info..........Humm!!!........When I get home I figured this was a waste of time, but.....I get it out and look at it a little closer.....

Wow.......Look at this .....When I looked at it originally the "O" Ring was on and I didn't notice the recessed taper area that the "O" ring sat in.........Hummm!!!!.........I called Coy back and explained what I found and what he already knew.........

When you measure the minor diameter and add the size of the larger "O" Ring vs the .875 dia of the Holley straight tube and the smaller ring.....The compression for the seal is exactly the same.........So.....My conclusion that the "O" ring was the problem was not correct........Holley had it figured out dimensionally correct........Sheesh !!!.......All that work for nothing.......but.......I still don't understand exactly what the issue was......So......Right now I have the larger "O" compressed into a space it really wasn't designed for......and......when I was talking to Coy I spun the engine over........"0" oil pressure.......Spun it over for about 20 seconds and Boom 50 lbs pressure.........So......If you have installed one of these pans.....don't worry about it.........Man.....what an Idiot .........This car stuff is hard............

And...........Congrat's to Holley for the follow up to bring that part of the issue to a logical conclusion...

Well !!!!..........I got another education today..........Got a call this morning at the shop from Coy........an Engineer from Holley........He wanted to know what and how everything transpired in my Dilemma...So.....I explained everything to him and how I felt the "O" ring was the cause of the issue.........O.K...He said !!.......I explained how I measured the tube and it was the same size as the Holley tube and since they were the same size I concluded that the smaller "O" was the issue.........He then asked if I still had the GM pick-up tube and was it tapered.........In my mind I was thinking a lead in style taper, .....And I measured the end and it measured .875 the same as the Holley tube........So....I told him I had it at home and I could measure it again and send him the info..........Humm!!!........When I get home I figured this was a waste of time, but.....I get it out and look at it a little

Wow.......Look at this .....When I looked at it originally the "O" Ring was on and I didn't notice the recessed taper area that the "O" ring sat in.........Hummm!!!!.........I called Coy back and explained what I found and what he already knew.........

Moving along.........Got the heater hoses installed and on to the part that is a real pain in the rear.....piecing together radiator hoses.........So.....I made some adaptors today matching the different upper hose sizes and then went to the auto parts store trying to visualize cutting sections out of hoses to get then to suit my application.......ended up being simpler than I expected.....I ordered a bunch of heat shrink hose clamps that will be here Monday so I can get them finished....Supercharger intercooler hoses are next........Getting closer......the adaptors are Aluminum Glass Beaded

On to the last major piece of the puzzle......Fuel System.......The Nomad has a major difference from the standard 55-57 Chevrolets........The Gas Tank........Because of the spare tire well in the Nomad.....the standard Gas Tank couldn't be used......so...GM used the space available and pretty much form fit a tank to fit........the easy option would have been to cut out the well and use a stock tank........I couldn't take the easy way out....LOL.......So......With the Nomad tank being much deeper than a stock tank, and using a stock GM LSA Fuel Pump.........some major issues popped up.......In my other conversions I had to shorten the overall length of the pumps to fit.......on this application I have to go the other way and lengthen the Pump and modify the tank to accept the new pump.........Stay Tuned......LOL

Well........The last big hurdle is the Fuel system......Two issues here.......#1....The Nomad gas tank is nothing like a stock 57 tank......with the spare tire well in the rear floor....there wasn't too much room left for a gas tank.....so GM pretty much form fit a tank in the space that was available......as you can see........

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/57%20Nomad/3C03D05E-71AE-4838-8AF5-4B6B535BD50F.jpg

And a new tank I bought for Modifications.............

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/57%20Nomad/D26F37C2-750D-4ACA-8D64-0B9557A046DE.jpg

I'm using a GM LSA Fuel pump which is 7 1/2" high and the Nomad tank is 12" deep.....So......two problems....the GM pump needs to be spring loaded against the bottom of the tank......so...I need to build a recessed mounting system for the GM pump......and I need to lengthen the stock LSA pump to replicate the stock compressed GM specs......Here are some pic's of the Tank Modifications.......Should be finished later this week........

More to come

kwhizz
03-16-2016, 02:50 PM
Also..........To get the old Nomad tank out of the car I basically had to just about take the rear axle assy out........I disassembled everything and slid the housing forward on the springs to get enough room for the tank to come out.......And....as long as I am ripping the rear of the car apart, I had an Axle oil seal leak on the passenger side, so....pulled the axle out to get that fixed.......then I checked and found out the rear was an open rear......so....pull it all apart and took the third member to get a Posi unit installed.........used a couple cans of Brake clean to get the oil out of the parking brake assy and to get the pads and rotors cleaned up......should have the rear ready for reassembly when the tank is finished.....

kwhizz
03-16-2016, 03:15 PM
And........The Fuel pump.........A couple of concerns here.......The GM pump has exposed wires that are submersed in the gasoline........So....I found out by asking the experts on LS1tech how to extend the wires while lengthening the pump......I was told to use PTFE wire and shrink tubing only.......took a while to locate the Teflon insulated wire and shrink tubing......finally got everything and got the wires fixed.........next was the flexible "Soda Straw" feed line from the pump to the outlet port on top of the assy........couldn't figure out a good way to lengthen the corrugated plastic tube without crushing or restricting the line........so.....I ended up getting some -8 braided stainless fuel hose and it worked out perfectly......I cut off the plastic tube and left the stock GM RF sealed tube ends on the fittings.....the -8 hose fit over these tube ends perfectly and will be held on with stainless hose clamps.....then I made some stainless rod extenders and longer springs to make the pump to the new length.........all finished, just need to wire tie the wires to neaten then up.......

A little update.....After starting the car it was noticed that the Alternator wasn't charging.........Ended up I had to put a ground wire from the alternator to the block.......charges fine now.....no fuel line leaks.......Added transmission fluid......everything Good......Made an appointment at the Muffler shop to get the Exhaust system installed......Then we have a problem..........Started the car and let it run for a while to check out the cooling fans.......Look under the car and coolant leaking .....Damm........Ended up being the Concept1 Billet thermostat housing leaking where they put the Hose Tube into the body.........called them and they said that they had a problem with them and changed the way they manufacture them to eliminate that problem........the "Big" problem is that the housing is buried under everything and I had to pretty much remove everything to get at it........4 hours later I got it off and waiting for a new GM one to show up............Darn........I was all done and now the car is in pieces again.......Gotta push the exhaust appointment back to next week........

Oh the joys :hitaxeonthehead:

Had another little issue come up......when I did the gas tank revision I didn't think it thru correctly, the stock fuel level sender had the float arm going in to the left.......LOL.....it and the new fuel pump were fighting for the same spot..........I ended up ruining the original sender in modifying it......new one showed up and was modified correctly ..........cut off the pick-up tube that the sender was mounted to and rotated it 180 degrees......and since I am not using the tube anymore we welded it up solid to eliminate any fuel leaks.......installed it and everything works perfectly....Two little issues remain (until I find more).........the intercooler pump doesn't turn on and the fittings I used to connect the intercooler lines to the Supercharger leak.........Always something.........the exhaust will go on this week and I moved the car under it's own power for the first time ........just in and out of the garage.........

Got the car back from Frame-up and the A/C system is now complete.......I was going to take the car up to the Dells for the Automotion car show........In checking everything out, it seems the new Intercooler Pump that came with the kit doesn't work...........A new one is coming under Warranty but won't be here in time.........Darn !!!!

kwhizz
05-22-2016, 07:59 AM
The learning curve continues..........I didn't take the car to the Automotion show in the Dells as planned because the Intercooler wasn't working........I had the car running for a while and was checking the cooling system with my infrared heat gun........Noticed the intercooler was ambient temp.......Hummm.....Check the intercooler lines and just a gradual heat change Hummm.......I checked the plug and had Power.......Humm.......I added a Reservoir for the coolant that was higher than the Supercharger and it was full.....but there was no movement of coolant when running.........I called Pace Performance (where the system was purchased) and told them the pump wasn't working........They said they would Warranty it and send out a new one.........(paid for in advance till they got the defective one back)........So.....We get back from the Dells and the box was waiting for me.........Beautiful !!!....So......I change out the pump......fill with water again (was surprised there wasn't a lot of coolant leakage from the line from the intercooler).......started the car and the pump ran for about 10 seconds and shut off...........Darn !!!.........Check all the fuses......everything good.....
Hummm!!!!.........Come in the house and do a Internet search about the pump........Found a thread about this exact problem..........Air in the System.......When the pump sees Air it turns off......Hummm....System is full at it's highest point..........Hummm.......Go out and now Focus and this issue...........I ended up putting a "T" fitting from a Radiator flush kit in the upper Intercooler hose....I back filled the Intercooler that I thought was full with 3/4 of a gallon of coolant.....capped it off and it now works perfectly..........Sheesh !!!.......This car stuff is Hard !!!!

Here are some pic's of the finished install.....Everything went smooth except for one issue.....I wanted to keep the ride height just as it was.......the Coil-over shocks that were shipped with the kit set the ride height when they were fully extended........so....Donnie ordered a new set that were 2" longer ........The kit was designed to work with the shocks as delivered and with the 9" Ford rear in the car, the yoke is lower than a Chevy rear........So.......With the longer Shocks the triangulated bar now hit the driveshaft yoke.......They to make a bracket to lower the bar to get it to clear........The Gas Tank is installed and the fill tube all hooked up......Here are some pic's before the wheels and tires are installed

New exhaust system is in......New Tires as the old ones although good.......were 10 years old, and the rear tires were a pain to get in as they were so wide......the rear end had to have the shocks unbolted to get them on or off......so....I went to a slightly taller and narrower tire to make the car more user friendly.........and the new storage pan is in and in use......So........The car is pretty much finished and the conversion has taken the car to a new level, the Coil-over rear suspension has improved the ride considerably........I also added new tubular upper and lower front control arms........the one thing that is not finished yet is I bought a Glide Engineering contoured foam front seat that is being upholstered to match the existing pattern ........Here are some pic's..

Update.........After getting the Lift gate straightened by Mike at Madmooks and getting it installed........The next thing I was concerned with was the 25 year paint on parts of the car that were untouched by Pulera's.......the paint was in good shape, but had Orange Peel and areas of shrinkage in it......and I didn't want to open a can of Worms, but.......After thinking about it......I got in touch with Joe Miller who wet sanded and buffed the 66 Biscayne to perfection 10 years ago.....Joe started his own Restoration shop in Forreston, Il (J. Miller Restorations).......Anyhow, Joe said he could get it in and two weeks later I dropped it off....Joe was concerned about some of the shrinkage areas and obviously about how much paint was on the car for wet sanding.........8 days later I get a call saying that the car was finished.....(no paint jail here)........Joe ended up having to repaint the roof, and then continued with the wet sanding and buffing..........All I can say is that Joe is a Miracle worker........Check out the pictures........all the area's of shrinkage are finished and buffed to perfection......absolutely no imperfections at all......Crazy!!!!.......We will be shipping the car out to Phoenix in early May for the Spring Good-Guys Hall of Fame Road Tour that starts there.......I'm really starting to like this car.....LOL

Update........A couple of things........Took the car to Nickey Chicago for tuning......during the tuning process a couple of issues popped up.........#1....I put a Concept 1 front drive set-up on the car to allow for the A/C compressor to be mounted up top ( no room in the stock low position due to cross member clearance issues)....this setup drives everything off of one 8 rib belt.........and in the Dyno tuning process when given full throttle, the belt squeal made it apparent the Belt wrap on the crank pulley was not the best along with the belt dust all over the engine..........I had a Gatorback belt on the car which has cross grooves which make the belt quieter,........But the guys at Nickey told me to get a Gates Fleet Runner Belt which doesn't have the cross grooves and will give more gripping surface..........Only made 7lbs of boost with the slippage.........New Belt installed..........2nd.......the Horsepower on the Dyno was lower than I expected..(442 RWHP).....Also in driving the car home it ran good but just didn't have the power of the LSA powered 66 Chevelle) ............After getting the car home I put it up on the lift and after looking at the exhaust system..........I now realized that I should have not used the stock cast iron manifolds........and when the exhaust was fabricated, the 90 degree bend put in the pipe coming down from the manifolds actually reduced the pipe diameter quite a bit..........so....as I looked at this set-up, I really realized the Choke point of trying to push all the exhaust at RPM thru that area of pipe........So..........Here we go again......LOL......Ordered a set of 4 tube headers........(pic's to follow).........It will be interesting to see what the numbers will be after getting everything installed and tuned again............I'm also going to install a set of Ring Bros Hood Hinges........

Also on your Chevelle you you are running the LSA in stock pulley configuration not the LFP 2.5" upper pulley?

Hey Ken any new dyno numbers after the header and tune? Also curious if you're at the limit of the stock injector with header / tune / and pulley combo.

Been busy so I haven't gotten it back on the dyno yet..........Hopefully next week.......

Been a while for an update.........We were going to take the Nomad on the Good-Guys Road Tour last fall........That was the plan anyway.....The tour started in Mooresville, N.C. and ended in Dallas/Ft. Worth.....We were going to drive to Mooresville and have the car shipped back home from Dallas......During the mod's to the car, we had to eliminate the stock Emergency Brake linkage and cable assy due to clearance issues......So...We ordered an E-Force electric E-Brake actuator (Need E-Brake for shipping)......While waiting for the assy to show up I noticed that the A/C system lost it's charge.....Damm!!.........Did some checking and found that the front drive compressor manifold that came with the kit had a leak in it at where the Tube was welded to plate.......Darn........Called Concept one and they said they would ship one out.......well....It came the day we were supposed to leave.......No time to get it fixed so we took the Impala instead.........Meanwhile.......I left the car at Frame-up for Donnie to fix the A/C, install the E-Force unit and replace the Shorty Headers that had some clearance and vibration issues......we ordered some "Real" headers........Hooker long tubes.... When we returned Donnie had the car all finished.........So, it is ready for this years Road-Tour........Also after the new header install and a pulley change (another long story) we got the Supercharger belt slippage resolved....It now makes 12 lbs of boost and made 520 RWHP thru the mufflers........By the way....The Impala got an overall average of 23.7 MPG over 2880 miles........

I ended up adding another Idler pulley between the Power Steering pump and the Harmonic Balancer to get another 90 degrees of Belt wrap to eliminate the slippage.........and I added a 2.5" pulley ..........All the difference

So...….The story continues...… The seat was at three different upholstery shops over the last 2 1/2 years trying to get a decent job..... Now.....This is a Glide Engineering seat ordered for a 57 Chevrolet...….The upholstery shops (all except the last one, had a issue with the stupid way that Glide designed the pivot arms for the seat backs...….They are about 4" in from the seat sides...….Normal seats the swing arms are outside the cushion (common sense)…….So.. After throwing away two sets of covers that were terrible... I went back to Dave who did the 37 Ford....So... Dave did a great job on the seat except I would have preferred a more rounded form on the top of the seat backs..... Picked it up today and wanted to get it installed right away as we are taking the Nomad on the Good-Guys Road Tour and she wanted a comfy seat in the car...… Well......I get the old seat out and get the new one in and after getting it bolted in I went to raise the seat backs and guess what...……..The seat back frames are 1" per side too wide ……..Great Job Glide.....Here we go again !!! All I want is to be a person that gets what he wanted and paid for that actually fits and works...… I guess that is asking too much...…….Glide Engineering Sucks !!!!!

I had a intermittent problem that kept cropping up...… I would get in the car and turn the key and click, click, click...… Battery was fully charged..... Humm !!!……. Went thru the Battery cables, cleaned tightened and thought the problem was solved.... Till it did it again...….. replaced the starter...…..problem solved.... Not !!!...…… Replaced battery cables...….. Same thing...… The only thing left that makes any sense is the Ignition switch...…. No time to get a "Real" GM switch and replace it......So... The Nomad is staying home and the Chevelle is going instead...…. Darn.... This car stuff is hard !!!!!

Did you put a new harness in the car? I had a problem some time ago with the original harness bulkhead with corrosion. It provided a periodic voltage drop in the trigger wire for the solenoid.................click click!

Greg...... Different situation...... Ended up being a loose alternator connection to the Battery.......Voltmeter showed voltage but the amperage wasn't getting thru to the Battery......and the Battery was getting minimal charging..... Found the problem after we got the car home last year..... The 10 ga wire I had going to the battery (way too small I have since learned) covered in the plastic casing....... Couldn't see the wire because it was inside the casing, but I smelled a weird smell in the engine compartment and was looking around and I noticed the casing was melting at the alternator....From the loose connection resistance heated the wire and pretty much melted the insulation...... It also took out the alternator.....I did some research and found out that with the Electric fans at least a 6 GA wire was required.... New alternator and 6 GA wire and now I can have everything running and the Voltmeter stays at 14 Volts...... Another education to the guy who thinks he knows everything.....LOL......

I are Smart !!

Just thinking about the clicking ----

Check grounds from motor to chassis etc

Check voltage at starter motor for voltage drop

Check voltage at ignition vs battery

Bypass ignition and hot wire -- to see if she starts

Neutral safety switch contact (assuming there is still one in the car)

Bad battery. We had an Optima on our C10 with a SBC that did the same thing. One time it would crank and run like a champ, then you get somewhere and it sit for awhile (meaning the starter etc had cooled off) and it would just click. Keep trying here and there and eventually it would crank and run like hell. We could take it in to the auto parts store and let them test it and it would show the battery was bad every time. We went through 3 Optima yellow tops before we switched to something else. Never had another problem and eventually sold the truck.

Will tell you very quickly if it's a possible battery issue -- just jump it and see if she fires up every time you twist the key.

Also -- some parts stores (hate to call them that anymore) can do a load test on the battery vs just a voltage check... sometimes it's the load that takes 'em south.

Since it pains me to say that the car season is basically over for the year....The refining process will now continue over the fall and winter season.....Couple things I'm not comfortable with...… Ordered a new GM Ignition switch to hopefully solve the intermittent starting issue...… #2... I'm going to bite the Bullet and change out the Concept 1 Front drive set-up(single belt for everything) for a Wegner LSA front drive ( two belt drive) ……. In the 57 the single belt C1 set-up moves everything forward to align with the Blower Belt position...… In this position everything fits, But.…..There is no clearance between the drive and the fans and radiator...… So, in driving the car like we do across the country, if anything would happen to fail …….. the only way to access the components is to basically remove the radiator and or Core support (another reason I was hesitant to take the Nomad on the Road Tour this year)...… Don't want to be in that position..... With the Wegner set-up, there will be another 1 1/2" of room to at least have room to access the Pulley's Etc... One of these things you learn as the process moves along..... Gonna make it more Gooder !!!..... LOL

After being in three different shops and finally getting a decent job in the third shop, then finding out the seat was too wide and didn't fit...… I've had it with that seat..... Glide made new seat back frames so the seat would now fit, but, after being on the Road Tour a couple weeks ago and talking to Greg Weld and sitting in Bret Vogel's car...… I have decided to sent the original seat to Tracy Weaver in Nebraska and get him to recontour and work his magic on it as he has done many of these conversions………. #2...… The intermittent clicking issue when trying to start the car ended up being a connection issue at the column mounted neutral safety switch
#3..... the Battery going dead ended up being in the aftermarket ignition switch included in the rewire kit...…… the original 57 Key bezel is still used..... It has Start...Run...off... and Lock on it...…..Unknown to me.... (Probably in the Instructions....LOL )when I would shut off the car and turn the key to the lock position...…. Time to fix another issue that came up with this particular combination...… I bought a Concept1 front drive system while putting the car together. After final assy it turned out that the single belt front drive setup was designed to run everything off the forward positioning of the Super Charger drive pulley. This had all the pulleys and tensioners in that forward position. After the Radiator and fans were installed, everything fit but just barely..... If something would have happened on the road there would have been some major issues having access to the components on the front of the engine..... An uncomfortable position I didn't want to put myself in..... So...… In looking at the other set-ups that are available, I decided to get purchase a Wegner LSA drive.....A two belt set-up that will provide a lot more access for maintenance in this particular application...… So... If you are going to need a LSA front drive set-up and install it in a car that has more clearance in front …… Here is a 100% complete Concept 1 system that has only a couple thousand miles on it and you can save a lot of $$$$$...… LOL....

Here are some ongoing pic's of the change over

Looked at my email from them and they said they would notify me when it was shipped...… They never shipped it...… WTF !!!! Ordered it elsewhere and told them to cancel and refund the money...…. Let's see how this plays out...….. All I want is to be a consumer and get what I pay for..... I guess that's asking too much !!!!!

Looks great!

I can't stand it when I pay for fast shipping and it doesn't show up!!! Drives me crazy. You know your expecting the part, maybe take vacation from work just to do something..................and then nothing.:hairpullout:

Like they don't know it needs to be there by you paying for overnight. It just doesn't make sense. I hope this works out for you this time.
