So I've been on this site for a few years now and during that time I have begun a slow transformation of converting my 64 Chevelle from a drag race car to a fun to drive pro touring car. I've had my car since the 90's and have done everything to it. I used to be big in street/drag racing and loved to have a fast car I couldn't really drive. Once I started seeing how these pro touring cars were being built I decided I wanted to convert a basically finished race car into something I could enjoy with the family and my friends. I want to do occasional auto cross events but for the most part just build a fast and fun to drive car. I really like the resto mod look. Unfortunately I couldn't find too many before shots. It used to have the standard 90's Weld Draglites. The following photos were when I started to make some changes and had a set of 17" tourqe thrusts. I've decided to keep the 468 Big Block Chevy engine in it for now. I am putting in a T56, upgrading all the suspension and brakes, and updating the interior. https://www.dropbox.com/sc/g463cbx2vl4bp70/AABc3a9JU7PIpPCEPAiZrsrNa

Haha, my thoughts exactly. I tried copy and pasting the link of the photos from drop box and pasting it to the add photos and I get a little square with an x. I found an old how to thread but its from 2011 and isn't the same as what I am seeing. Any help?

I have always used Photobucket. Pretty simple and straight forward. They even give you the html code to copy and paste your images.

Thanks waynieZ! I'm still working on getting photos into photo bucket but for the most part this is kinda where I started a few years back. I'll get more in and start showing the work I've been doing. It's definitiely not one of these high end bad ass builds but it will be a cool garage build budget pro touring car.

I gave this one to my 17 year old son . Would love to hear your plans . This one will get a full SpeedTech Performance frame boxing with cross member as well as 4 corner coilovers A arms and some mor stuff from them . LS3 with a Richmond 5 speed and a Fab 9" rear.

So is started the ol T56 swap. I wanted to try and keep the floor as original looking as I could on the top and bottom so I opted to section and raise the existing tunnel. Here's kinda how I did it

I created roughly 2" strips using the cuts as a template then tacked them in place. I rolled the floor slightly in some spots and tacked it all together essentially raising the trans 2"

Then I had to relief cut the firewall and bring it up to the height of the tunnel. The end of the tunnel needed some work molding the old pieces and new pieces together

I cleaned it all up and put a coat of primer before I welded up all the old holes in the floors. I welded in bucket seat brackets and prepped the floors for Por15. The florrs were all in all pretty clean. There was surface rust in all the standard spots but nothing went threw and they were all in all pretty solid

Meanwhile, underneath I welded in the Chris Alston trans cross member and boxed the frame rails. The hardest part of the rails was straightening all the years of jacks and jack stands bending the old frame rails, especially with the body on the car.

Oh yeah, before I coated the floor I put in the driveshaft and took out the rear springs and the bump stops to let the axle lay on the frame. The only clearance issue I had was under the rear seat so I cut it out and welded a taller piece in. Probably wouldn't normally be necessary unless you plan on the car being really low which I do

So you can see in some of the photos the dash and door tops used to be painted a faux marble. I think getting rid of the old 90's marble is probably one of the biggest interior upgrades to me. LOL. I went with the Boss 338 wheels and I really like the flat grey against the shiny black so I felt bringing this color into the interior would be really nice. I also kinda felt that having some flatness against the black and chrome would make for some good contrast in the interior. I'm liking it so far. I went with House of Kolor Galaxy Grey with Hot Rod Flatz clear coat.

MOREHORSEPOWER, Thanks. I didn't tub it but back when I raced and before I painted the car we modified the rear outer wheel well to the quarter panel. It's actually really clean and I'm able to stuff a 30" slick under there or now a 20x10 with a 275/35/20 tire. I just placed a big order and I'm waiting for some parts. I'll be updating soon with some new photos

64mali From the last photo they look more like a 315mm . I am guesing a 5.5" or 6" backing . We also shaved the lips on the fenders when replacing the rear quarters . Keep the pic coming and the parts roiling . I like the fact that you are building your car as we get ready to build my sons car.

I forget the backspacing but I can measure it next time I have a wheel off if you'd like. I'm pretty sure the rear end is narrowed also. I'll get a measurement of that as well to let you compare. I like the 20's in the back a lot but I think I'm going to get a set of 18's for playing around on the autocross track. That way I don't kill sticky and expensive tires playing on the street. You've also got me thinking about the Speed Tech frame brace kit now.lol. But I think I'm going to finish the mess I started and see how it goes. If I do everything now I won't have nothing to compare it to because I only went fast in straight lines before...

MOREHORSEPOWER

Yes if you can get numbers that would be great . As for the brace kit you have take the body off the frame . But as you said I only want to do it once and now is the time . I live 4 hours north of SpeedTech and we went down to there shop and what a bunch great guys !! They even gave my son a ride in there C10 . I think he is still smiling !!

So it's funny how I underestimate time and materials sometimes, lol. I started to lay down the Dynamat Extreme and figured I would start from the rear. I went to clean the old glue off the package tray and ended up stripping it to metal. Once I was in it that far I figured there was no point in leaving the huge square holes where the roll bar goes through so I made filler panels. Next a little epoxy prime and I can finally start my Dynamat project.

So I start laying the Dynamat and was waiting for my Dynaliner and the cardboard rear seat divider to show up. I ordered the divider and package tray minus the old jute pad because I figured the Dynaliner would be way cooler. Then it gets here. So for whatever reason I didn't pay much attention to the amount of Dynaliner that comes in a roll and figured I would probably get the back half done. LOL, I certainly underestimated that one. So I have a very nice divider board that just quadrupled in value. HaHa. This sound deadening adventure isn't going to be cheap. I'm happy with the outcome so far though.

Sorry not a very exciting update but I am looking forward to getting my interior back in.

So unfortunately life's curb balls have been hitting me from all angles. The car was obviously side lined but I have decided to keep going on things that don't really cost money at the moment. I don't really have anything too exciting going on but I got my windshield installed today. I got new glass and had my chrome polished. Shout out to Smiley in San Francisco for his polishing skills. He did a great job! If anyone is in the bay area and looking for a guy pm me and I'll give you his number. There's not too many guys doing it around here anymore.

Now it's time to straighten out this mess. Anyone have ideas on mounting the Dakota Digital control boxes? I have the dash unit and the electric fan setup. I'm thinking of making a plate for those and the relays so I'm not drilling any holes. I'm also thinking of making a plate to go behind the glove box for my MSD, coil, and solenoid. I am planning on mounting the battery behind the rear seat over the axle.

Thanks guys! Is anyone running QA1 or Viking rear coil-over kits? I can't find shock length data on any brands except QA1. They are calling their shock 20.5" extended and 14" collapsed. Here's a shot of my measurement collapsed which is about 14" but I'm afraid that might be too close. The rear end is not touching the frame here, just lying on the bump stops. I plan on setting the car up as low as I can which I am guessing will be about two inches higher than it is here. Am I over thinking it or should I get a shock that's about an inch shorter?

Got some new parts in. It's funny I wanted to do a coil over conversion 20 years ago when I was drag racing. Really glad I didn't do it. The technology has come so far. I'm really impressed with the quality of these parts!

Alright, so to the guys who patiently waited for my explanation on how to fit a 10" wide rear wheel in a 64.....here's why it took so long. In order for me to photo what was done back in the day I had to remove years of rubber from the ol drag racing days out of the wheel wells in order to show you. LOL, what a pain in the behind that was! I tried everything next to pulling out the torch and melting it off but ultimately was successful in using a commercial grade power washer. I guess I had the best rubberized coating there is.

So I have a 12 bolt that has been narrowed one inch from factory. My rear end measures 59" overall axle to axle. I may be wrong but everything I have read the factory 10 bolt 64 rear end was 60" end to end. The next modifications were to the inner fender well. Obviously I had to do it before paint because I cut the outer wheel housing about three quarters the way up and pushed it out toward the quarter. I then welded in some metal to join the well to the quarter. Then about 3/4" of the lip was trimmed away. Bear in mind I did this 20 years ago. I ran the car with a 28x10" slicks that were basically a 275/60/15's I think. My main thing back then was I didn't want to cut the car up (tub it) and I am glad I didn't. So here's a shot of the inner wheel well looking out toward the quarter. If you look closely you can see where the pieces were welded in. I think this mod gave me roughly another inch of play. I can roll a 20x10 with a 275/35/20 without touching anything and the car's frame resting on the axle without a bump stop.

I decided early on in this project that I did not want to remove the body. It was a decision I regret after countless hours on my back degreasing, welding, grinding and sanding. I guess for the most part I was scared of space limitations and dealing with an already painted car. I also did not want to cut the cage out of it even though I already removed some of it. But in the end I am happy with the way it is coming along. These pics are in an epoxy prime as there are still a few areas that I need to finish but I think it's coming along.

I'm on to my last big project that I've put off and put off. I thought of ways of covering it up for now so I can put the car back together but decided I've come this far I want to finish it right. I would have much rather did the big one piece pan but again not pulling the body off has haunted me. Oh well, I think I've come up with some cut off points that you won't be able to see underneath and the top is going to be Dynamat'd anyway. I'm pumped because once I finish the trunk floor I can finish refinishing the underside and the car can finally go back together.

I'm getting really excited to finally bolt things onto the car for the last time. Hopefully. I've been working on the wiring with a good friend of mine. We decided to install a new electrical bulkhead for all the wiring forward of the fire wall. I used a Delfi connector and it will be moved to the outside driver's edge of the firewall where it will be hidden by the fender. In order to get to that area I had to run the wires into the pocket where the air vent was. I am replacing the vent with speakers so I can use the original kick panels.

Not super happy with the trunk floor pans I got. There's a couple subtle differences like an extra drain hole in the middle and the raised beads on the bottom ran too high in the back. They prevented the pan from sitting flush against the rear cross member. So I had to break out the torch and hammer and flatten them out. Other than that they fit good and I sectioned it in a way that from underneath you could never tell they were replaced. I can make the inside undetectable as well but I'm not going to spend a ton of time on the top because I'm gonna Dynamat the floor.

I have a big front sway bar but would like to go with the Ride Tech one also. Sweet! How much clearance do you have with the inner fender?

Zoomin, the clearance to the fender well is good, I am more concerned with the oil pan and cross member. The good news is when I put the coil overs in if it is an issue I can raise it up a little bit.

I was hoping the huge disk brake trend ends before I am done so I can save a little money and just run it with rear drums. LOL

Anyone that doesn't like LS engines is going to get a lot of heartburn on this site. :snapout:

I've got a FiTech unit too, but haven't hooked it up yet. Can't wait to test it out.

Haha, I agree about the LS engines so here's my stance on it.

A.. I have two healthy big blocks that are done and have a lot of money tied up into them so it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me at this point to do an LS swap. My second motor is a beast at over 700 HP on pump gas!

B.. At this point it's better for me to finish my build and try to set up for an LS swap down the road if I am unhappy with the motors I have or as they die...LOL, I'm not easy on motors so in all reality I just need to start preparing for that day in advance.

C.. I am happy setting the car up with this type of fuel injection for now knowing that I'll have parts in the car like the fuel injection tank, fuel system, and transmission that will easily adapt to an LS down the road. I have also thought about doing the swap using a carbureted intake and the FITech if I wanted. In all reality now that I have the T56, the fuel system, the FITech, I am thinking a swap will be relatively painless. I am also very excited to get the car running with all the improvements I have made so I have an idea of what I like and would like to improve on.

All in all, I am very partial to traditional small blocks and big blocks in old Chevy's. I am also very open to the thought of doing an LS swap. You simply can't ignore their reliability and performance. There's no doubt in my mind I will do an LS swap in the future. For now, my focus is getting the car back on the road and enjoying it.

I agree with the Black with Red letters. Who's kit are you considering? I did the kit from Kore3 and paired it with a DSE brake booster Sbd the car stops as good as my 2010 Camaro.

ps I did an LS swap with a 700r4 and a carb and I live that your doing a big block as nothing sounds better then a raspy big block.

I knew if I started a thread I would have to keep the progress and pics coming to keep the thread going and by keeping it going I've met new friends and sparked up new conversations with old ones. On top of that a couple of my buddies just bought new hot rods and it's giving me even more motivation to get this thing going again. I haven't decided how I'm going to paint the calipers yet. Part of me kinda likes the raw look but I also think if I powder them gloss black and paint the lettering red they'll look cool. I even thought of smoothing them out first and having some Chevelle decals made

I got my front coilovers in tonight. I'm very happy they fit great. With the adjustment collar just loose enough to not have any spring tension the car sits really nice but realistically an inch too low. That's perfect! I can lower it a little extra for shows and such and lift it up an inch or so when it's cruising time. That's exactly what I wanted.

I'm not so happy with the rear though. I think the shock is too long. I have the adjustment collar all the way to the end and the car could still go a little lower. In this position the spring falls out of the upper collar if I jack up the car. I'm pretty sure I am going to need a shorter shock! Any thoughts? Here's a pic at it's current setting.

What stroke shock is that? 4.1"?
What it most important is the travel of the shock when its at ride height. If its a 4.1", you want to be close to the center of stroke so ~2" or so either way. Definitely don't want to bottom it out on compression.
If you have enough shock travel at ride height, you can get shorter springs. This will move the spring perch up to allow more adjustment (if you have shock travel of course) They can and will pop out when you raise the car. Not really a big deal as long as they seat back properly when loaded. My rears do that now since going to a high spring rate. I just reach up there and feel with my hand if the spring seated properly when letting it down.

The right way to fix it is move the shock mounts further apart...I know, not as easy.

Very good info, thank you. I was afraid the springs would come off on a big dip or something. I have to crawl under and measure but I think I am about mid travel, although I will double check. I don't think I will bottom out the shock if I have a good bump stop on the rear end. I don't want to use the stock rubber ones, I was thinking of using the newer GM style progressive foam style stops. Anyone run these?

It's been a while since I have been able to do much to the car. I got out there today and made new roll bar access panels, laid down some Dynamat, and mounted my battery tray. I also welded a bung into the cage and trunk floor near the battery so I could get a good ground the chassis and body. Tomorrow I am hoping to get the new fuse panel hung and battery cable routed.

I still need to rivet down the access panels. I welded 3/8" bungs to the bottom of the battery tray and it's bolted down from underneath. I think it came out pretty clean.

I am shifting my focus to getting the car running. My biggest hold up has been the wiring. We started wiring it a while back and decided the old Painless fuse panel I installed in the late 90's wasn't going to cut it anymore. I opted to go with their newer 28 circuit kit leaving me more room for adding extra amenities. It was a little bit of a set back since we were somewhat far along already but in the end it was a good choice for my build. By me focusing on getting the car running it will certainly motivate me to finish the suspension and brakes once this car is able to start and I can start putting the interior together. It's been too easy to get side tracked when the end seemed so far away. Really all I have left to do is wiring, rear disk brakes, power steering, steering column and wheel, brake master cylinder and rear brake line, finish hooking up the hydraulic clutch, fuel lines, and interior.

I am at the point where I need to figure out wiring the T56. I know there are a million posts all over the internet and I've spent countless hours reviewing them but can't find what I need. Can anyone help? I have a Dakota dash and am assuming the VSS will get wired directly to the dash. The reverse light seems straight forward. What about reverse lockout and the skip shift??? I have all the pig tails. Any help or guidance would really be appreciated.

I wired my reverse lockout to my brake pedal. So clutch it, tap the brakes, slides right into reverse. Works great. The skip shift, you can just delete (no wire I believe). Doing that in a car the trans was born in would throw the light all the time. Yes, the VSS goes right to the DD box. You can calibrate the pulse/mile once you get it running and driving.

Not sure what you mean side step. Whenever you shift into reverse, you should be at a full stop anyway. So clutch in, tap the brake, engage reverse. Its real simple actually.

Ah man, it's been a minute since I have updated anything. Nothing too exciting. Life has been a bit in the way of the car it seems but lately I have been back at it. We are really close on the wiring. I got my dash in. I got a new tilt steering column in and my clutch pedal installed. I have started to build the exhaust. I decided to test myself and tig up my own stainless exhaust system. So far I'm pretty satisfied considering this is the first stainless I have ever tig welded and I have pretty much only done aluminum.
