View Full Version : "BLACK WIDOW" 68 Firebird MetalWorks Pro-Touring build
MetalWorksClassics

We just took in this 1968 pro-touring build. Our customer assembled a lot of great parts including a new Butler Performance engine, but then, like many projects it sat...so he sent it our way. The body has a LONG battle ahead of it, but are excited to see this one on the road.
Here is the 68 as it arrived...
P.S. We are calling it the "Black Widow" as we found 3 living Black Widows living inside it when we prepped it for acid dipping...1 male, and 2 females.

Tell us more! What's the overall plan for this car?
...are those bullet holes in the drivers door?

Sweet love to see some black Firebirds. Too bad you couldn't encase one of those black widows in some sort of resin and CNC a shifter ball out of it...
Are you going to put a 69 TA hood on it?

...are those bullet holes in the drivers door?
Ha ha...no bullet holes...drilled holes from a previous attempt at pulling a dent out of the door...we will be re-skinning the doors.
The plan for the 68 is a Pro-Touring car, it will be running a Butler Performance engine backed by a TREMEC T-56 six speed tranny with a Centerforce DYAD dual clutch, all Ridetech suspension, Forgeline wheels tucked inside Detroit Speed mini-tubs, and big 14" Wilwood brakes on all 4 corners...should be a really fun build, and a great performing car.

The first thing we did was send the 68 off to our acid dipping facility to get us to ground zero before starting the metal work.

The 68's main body shell had a great deal of damage...everything from dents, to rust, to poor attempts at bodywork by previous individuals. So we got busy removing panels...when we were done, the passenger rear quarter was about all that remained for external sheet metal...Here is day 1 of removal.
MetalWorksClassics
10-30-2015, 11:03 AM
Here is after day 2 of sheet metal removal...we also melted out the factory lead, and removed the inner wheel tubs as we intend to install Detroit Speed mini-tubs.

That's quite a lot of work to resurrect this 68!
Question: how do you plan on keeping the rust from starting again? Seems from the pics that you guys are putting on the panels without etching primer ... is there a coating on the car now?
Just curious ... love the pics!

Along similar lines....
When you spot weld two panels together, the top side I can see is usually bare. Is the backside bare or do you have weld thru primer on it or do you leave the EDP coating on it ? and the 2nd panel below it, same question, is it bare, EDP, weld thru primer - Do you leave a coating on the back panel and then just scratch/drill it away through the welding hole ?
Love to see the skeleton dressed and looking good, I know from experience though what the photos don't show are hours of lining up panels in 3 dimensions.

Everything will get epoxy primed and seam sealed once the panels are in place, so no moisture will get in.

I saw this same thing... Not going to argue the point, but I always used weld thru primer on everything before putting stuff back together. Bare metal WILL rust. I don't care whether it gets wet - there's moisture in the air.

Looks good and this is not a comment on your shop/work at all, but I've never understood the point of grinding down welds that will be covered in sound damping and carpet. For me personally I find grinding down welds to be extremely tedious and time consuming. Obviously required on things that get paint or Ridler contenders but always seemed so pointless on floors, especially considering you actually lose some theoretical strength.
Is that just considered part of the process of doing a quality job ? I mean there is no functional reason to grind down internal hidden welds is there ?

From my own standpoint I would say pride in knowing I did the job to what I would want it to be. Leaving them as is I would know they were not done a 100%. I know that nobody will ever see them but to me it's about craftsmanship/quality of your work.:welder:

I agree with Mike. I actually had a friend stop by when I was installing my SFC's and raising the trans tunnel. He couldn't understand why I would dress all the welds if I was going to put carpet in. I just smiled and said why wouldn't I?
To me it's just a matter of knowing I did the best I could.

Very good question, and thanks everyone for the input...for us it is mostly a preference of wanting our work to look as clean as possible, and for the floors to look stock...if down the line someone pulls back the carpet and sees thick weld lines, it is obvious there was floor work performed...we'd prefer it not show...

Fab question -
Looking at pictures of that gas cap install, you show a picture of it welded in and sanded pretty heavily. At this point, you can still see the voids in the weld. This is what my metal work looks like after grinding/sanding. Then, in the next picture, it shows it completely sanded and smooth with no voids.
Was the first picture just an intermediate step, or do you go back in and weld it again to fill in the voids, and then do the final grinding to all smooth metal ?

Three questions for you guys? What body mounts do you like to use? On the floor install did you cut the old floor using the new piece as a template or how do you guys like to do it? And it looks like continuous welds for the connectors? Do you not have to skip around and worry about warpage of the metal doing those? Thanks for the help and answers. We all appreciate the pics and knowledge.

Sorry we can't help on the body mounts as they came with the project, we did not order them.
On the floors we cut the bellys out, then sat the new pan in place and traced around it with a marker, then cut the rest of the old pan out...this allowed us to butt weld the new pans in place.
I agree the frame connector welds looks continuous, but we actual did skip around only doing around 5 spots at a time.
Thanks for the questions...take care.

Not to bore everyone with body work pics...but unless you've ever done a car to a true show quality paint job, the amount of hours and effort in endless body work is rarely realized.

I liken posts like this to the fundamentals of sports, Tim Duncan for example. Without those fundamentals the product is garbage, but with those fundamentals you make it look effortless to the point of being overlooked and always producing an out of this world product. You are doing exactly that in all of your posts. Keep up the impeccable fundamentals!
