View Full Version : 1978 Mustang II restomod
I took this in trade a few years ago toward some of the labor on restoring a Mustang. This is what we are starting with. The hood scoop has to go. I have always liked the Mustang II and I plan on making this my driver.

I'm not sure what they were thinking or what they used to cut this hole in the hood.

After Brian worked on it

The hood was sanded down to bare metal and all the old scoop holes welded.

It looked good before it was primed but it needs a lot of work
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN8144_zps4ca72bfa.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rusty428cj/media/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN8144_zps4ca72bfa.jpg.html)
After a little block sanding and bodywork

I plan on using the Mach 1 scoop and once that comes in I will bolt it on and finish the bodywork. At this time the hood is low in front of the hole but the scoop should draw that up.
I sprayed a couple of coats of epoxy to seal the bodywork.

A had enough Slick Sand polyester primer for a couple of coats

Block sanded with 80 and found one low spot that required a little filler

The hood required a lot of work but I'm happy with it now.

We have a new problem. This was filled with bondo. I had not planned on taking out the gas tank.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN8288_zps430c14b0.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rusty428cj/media/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN8288_zps430c14b0.jpg.html)
The rust was cut out.

Eleanor gas filler kit from Mustangs to Fear was welded in place. A gas filler neck from a 1968 Mustang was also used.

I wanted a cleaner looking taillight panel so the Ford holes were welded and ground down
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN9434_zpsa346e7d2.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rusty428cj/media/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN9434_zpsa346e7d2.jpg.html)
The bodywork is finished on the taillight panel
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN9558_zps12f2f5d2.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rusty428cj/media/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN9558_zps12f2f5d2.jpg.html)
Scottrods rear bumper fits great. The original bumper brackets were cut off and two holes were drilled in the trunk for a test fit. Add a few more bolts inside the trunk and a couple on each quarter and your done.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN9588_zpsc13cc7bc.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rusty428cj/media/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN9588_zpsc13cc7bc.jpg.html)
We found a 8" rear from a 1965 Mustang. The spring perches are a little wider on the rear but we made it fit. I ordered a 1" lowering kit.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN0166_zpsc13b33c8.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rusty428cj/media/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN0166_zpsc13b33c8.jpg.html)
I installed a Rod & Custom front suspension in my 1968 Coupe and upgraded to Baer brakes so I used the original ones that came with the kit on the II.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN0174_zpsacce4628.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rusty428cj/media/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN0174_zpsacce4628.jpg.html)
The front fiberglass bumper was to wide and shaped wrong at the bottom

I cut and taped a piece of aluminum

Added three layers of fiberglass mat

Still needs more work

When I'm finished the valance and bumper will be one piece.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN0336_zps3fb08af5.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rusty428cj/media/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN0336_zps3fb08af5.jpg.html)
I added 3 layers of fiberglass mat on each end and now all I have to do is fit the center piece and a lot of bodywork and I will have a one piece bumper and valance!!

Wow what a differance already. Nice job.
We had a few rust holes in the floor that were cut out and new metal added.

Because this has a T-top we are going to add subframe connectors and a roll bar from S&W. The roll bar was sanded and epoxy primed.

Nice color choice, Rusty! Good luck with the build.
The fenders have been sprayed white epoxy almost ready for SPI orange paint then I decided to fill in the marker lights

Ready for more primer. The wheels are off of Brian's 94 but the offset is wrong and the front cap won't go over the spindle
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN0853_zpsgyhjjbnf.jpg
I sprayed two coats of SPI epoxy primer on the body and roll bar

my parents had a Mustang II Cobra when I was kid.. I'll be following along on this build..
I decided it was time to upgrade the engine compartment

The spring perches on the 1965 rear end are 1/4" to wide on each side so we added metal to the bottom of the perch with an offset hole.

It is hard to believe but new motor mounts for a V8 are not available so we made our own. We had a set Rod & Custom small block motor mounts that we did not use on another project. They were cut down and welded to the frame

We will add another brace after the firewall is modified for the AOD and we install the engine and trans again

I like these cars. Some call them the low spot in the life of Mustang. I think when built right they are cool.
I ordered a spoiler from Mustangs Unlimited but after test fitting I realized I never did like how the spoiler is on the quarter panel and how tall it was.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN1107_zpsde04boom.jpg
I cut it down and added a little fiberglass
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN1669_zpskeiqxosn.jpg
After some bodywork

We had to do a little rust repair to the hatch and bodywork and I painted the back side SPI Orange. The spoiler was bolted and fiberglass mat was added and needed bodywork before the back was painted.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/1978%20Mustang%20II/DSCN2228_zpsnq3wvprl.jpg

You're going all out on this Mustang II, Rusty. It's going to be great when finished. I was at the Coker Tire show last weekend. There was a King Cobra present. Looked great. I can't remember the last time I saw one of those in person.
The seats came in today from Mustangs Unlimited still waiting for the seat tracks

We were going to use this Flaming River steering wheel in a 1967 Fairlane race car with a quick release Flaming River column but it was to close to the dash board. A couple of years ago Brian gave me a Momo steering wheel for my 1968 restomod Coupe for Christmas and the adapter would not work with the Ididit steering column. They both work great on the Mustang II steering column and I had some left over Dynamat from the 1968 Coupe.

I have decided it's time to start working on this project again. Dashboard is ready to install but need to fabricate brackets for the AC first.

Looking good, Rusty! Glad you're making progress on this one.
The engine looked great until we took it apart and found the machine work was not done properly and is mostly junk. We have decided to rebuild the original engine.
I'm not finished making all the brake lines.
