Yet another 70 Camaro build. I am new to lateral g and decided I would share my build hoping that some might share some insight on the build. I am building the car to be a good driver with intentions of autocrossing it every once in awhile. I purchased the car a little over a year ago so quite a bit has been done already. The car will be getting a ls motor with a 6 speed, Detroit speed Quadralink, 12 bolt, global west control arms and custom works performance front coil over conversion and many other of the usual parts.

Here is the car when I got it home. Has alot of issues it had been swung into a pole on the drivers side quarter they pulled out the quarter but the rear structure was left and both quarters are rusted out and also the trunk so it will be getting new gm rear sheet metal

Nice! Was it hard to find the quarters and other NOS parts? I don't have to ask if they were expensive.

It actually wasn't hard to find one of my dads friends had the driver quarter and tail light panel and I found the passenger quarter locally on ebay.

I liked the Detroit Speed firewall panel but didn't like the recess in it for the downward bars so I decided to make my own don't think it turned out to bad still got to body work it.

With that time frame you are still doing well ... I wished a body elf would come over to my house and finish my quarters, lol.

Post lots of pics ....

I never really liked the shape of the 2nd gens inner fenderwells with all of the recesses for the wiring and structure ribs, but I did like the anvil carbon fiber ones, I just couldn't bring my self to spending the 2500 for them. So i hammered out all of the ribs and structures and English wheeled and planishing hammered all of them out here is a picture of a stock one for reference

http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae113/Zach_Johanson/Screen%20Shot%202015-09-08%20at%207.19.15%20PM_zpsdnurwoak.png (http://s963.photobucket.com/user/Zach_Johanson/media/Screen%20Shot%202015-09-08%20at%207.19.15%20PM_zpsdnurwoak.png.

html)

Here is the one after I beat out the ribs and channels, still have to engish wheel and planish them out.

Here is a stock engine compartment vs what mine look like with the inner fenderwells modified i think they look pretty close to the anvil ones at a fraction of the cost.

Well I got the motor in but it wasnt an easy task.

http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae113/Zach_Johanson/IMG_1516_zps5y7xae0w.jpg (http://s963.photobucket.com/user/Zach_Johanson/media/IMG_1516_zps5y7xae0w.jpg.html)

I know many people have had no trouble swapping them in but I decided to go a whole different way than just buying a direct swap kit. I purchased the cpp fit rite mounts, they are quality pieces but when the motor got put in and started to set it down the bolt holes for the motor mount were off by about a 1/4 inch. But with the help of my dad who knows quite a bit said that there are two different types of mounts for a 70 camaro one for a 307 and 350 and one for a big block and z/28 car for added hood clearance so once I got those the motor fit perfectly.

http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae113/Zach_Johanson/IMG_1518_zpsbtkiiyye.jpg (http://s963.photobucket.com/user/Zach_Johanson/media/IMG_1518_zpsbtkiiyye.jpg.html)

http://i963.photobucket.com/albums/ae113/Zach_Johanson/IMG_1519_zpsyy78f4rn.jpg (http://s963.photobucket.com/user/Zach_Johanson/media/IMG_1519_zpsyy78f4rn.jpg.html)

Now for the cross member a buddy told me that if you turn a turbo 350 cross member around that it works perfectly well I should have known that didn't work but I had hoped for the best. But what did work is to take the mount and turn it upside down and put it on the other side which worked perfect I have great tunnel clearance and with the adjustable slide motor mounts I was able to make the cross member work with just a little bit of modification and not have to spend a ton of money on another one.

A buddy is porting and polishing the heads and a valve job. Thinking in the greenish gold realm something like Ford ginger ale or Subaru wilderness green metallic

Got the front fenders and inner fenderwells back on the car

I also welded up and filled the seams from the quarter panels to the tail light panel also I got the bumper on the car after having it straightened and dechromed since I wanted to smooth out the bumper and take off the bumper bolts. Once I got the bumper on I didnt like how it fit the body it had huge gaps all over the place so I decided to tighten them up

Haven't posted in a while, feels like I haven't really got anything done but got the doors header panel and deck lid back from the blaster so I have started fitting everything back on the car and starting to gap everything. Purchased a new urethane nose and chrome insert. Hopefully should start fitting it once I get new brackets since mine had been hit from a previous accident.

Its been a while since I posted. I got the front end assembled surprisingly the reproduction urethane nose fit better then expected just had to do a little bit of work to make it fit good. Welded up the front bumpers so they are smooth. Had to straighten out the brackets since they were tweaked a little bit.
Also got the back half of the car primed and blocked still have a couple more blockings to do to get it perfect. Getting the lower valance to fit was a nightmare picked up a good used one since my original was tweaked and rusted but it turns out the one I picked up was also tweaked and was missing one of the brackets for the nose piece so i ended up taking the two and making one. :superhack: Also started making close out panels for the fenders.Got the front ones done and just made templates for the rears until I get time to make those.

I figured it would be a cheaper route and I would be able to get it done faster and also if I want to I can always go fuel injected later. Also I like the look of a carbed ls

It is a good look. There was a 69 Camaro here at Caffeine and Octane a few months back. He did the swap with I want to say the FAST self learning EFI. Used old school looking valve covers and a normal air cleaner. It looked right at home in the car. I think most people walked past it without realizing what it really was. I nearly kicked myself because I stood there for way too long looking at the headers and scratching my head thinking it couldn't be a big block, the heads aren't wide enough.

Been awhile since I last posted. Had to get a new hood because when sand blasting the original hood it warped it a bit so it was just easier to get another one then to try and fix the original. Got the corvette vent mounted in it and also took out the rear cowl vent also made a pan to the bottom of the hood so that it seals to the bottom of the hood. Got the griffin radiator and made brackets for it so that I dont have to use original radiator top mount. Got the master cylinder setup from Keith at Custom Works. Made a bracket for the clutch reservoir so that they all line up together. Ordered a dashpad from NPD and had to cut it for the down bars then made filler plates to fill the gap. Now to blow it all apart and get it ready for paint.

Love your work! Got a question for you with the tabs you welded to the radiator. I was under the impression that a radiator needed room to expand and contract a bit as it heated and cooled off. Similar to the way factory radiators are usually in roomy grommets. What you did would be a great way to keep the radiator in place for me as I have been trying to figure out what to do with it.

Well it was time to tear the car down so I could paint everything and undercoat the underside. Blocked the whole car down then pulled it apart. Painted the firewall, sub frame and the rear end. Then I undercoated the bottom side with u pol raptor. Got the sub frame and rear end reassembled in the car. Waiting on a couple of small things to bolt the motor and transmission together then put it in the car then the car can go to the body shop to get painted.

They are there because i am mounting the battery in the trunk so instead of running the battery cables through the floor and having it chafe the cables.

Well I got the motor and transmission installed. Being that I am going carbureted I did not like the look of the stock valley cover. I really like the look of the billet specialties ribbed one but they do not make them for the ls1/ls6 style valley only for the ls2/ls3 so I had to modify it to make it work. Also I got the brake lines all bent up. I also started making the door panel cards and package tray made so I can take them to get them upholstered without having to take the car while it gets painted. Now I am just waiting on getting my cylinder heads back so I can get them torqued down and assemble the rest of the car to go to paint.

Its been awhile since I posted been getting a bunch of the little things done before it goes to paint. Got the cylinder heads back and installed also did the trunion upgrade. Got the inner fenderwells painted and also the radiator support. Got the design all done on the door panels so now all I have to do is get them covered. Now I'm just finishing up a couple of things and it can go off to get painted.

So far the install has been really good haven't done any of the wiring for it yet but everything else has gone smooth. I ended up just getting the evaporator and the condenser kits separate and bought the vintage air ez clip line kit for all of the ac lines.

Its been awhile since I posted an update got a bunch of little things done before it went to paint. Got all of the spark plug wires made and tailored. Got the steam port lines bent up and also the pcv. Built the exhaust system ended up doing a full stainless system with an x pipe. It was a trick to get it up and over the axle with the Detroit Speed Quadralink, ended up going with a tanks inc 69 Camaro tank with the notched corners since they do not make one for a 70 Camaro yet, it actually fits good just need to modify the fuel neck a bit. Got the brakes from Tobin at Kore 3 ended up going with the z06 brakes. Also decided to go fuel injected instead of carbureted went with the FiTech efi can't wait to get the car back from paint to get everything on and see how that turns out. Also got the gauges from Speed Hut. The car went off to paint everything is getting final tuned should hopefully be getting color on the car in a couple of weeks. Also got the interior out to the interior guy so hopefully everything should come back around the time the car gets back from paint.

Setup looks great! One question... Did you plumb a vacuum connection directly from the manifold vacuum port to the valley cover? If so, are you concerned about sucking oil directly into the intake? I have a catch can on mine, and I still pull some oil into the intake...

I can't fully see it, so perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought I would ask...

Got the car back Friday night and started working on it this weekend was able to get the front fenders, header panel and valance on it got to wait to install the nose and bumper filler panels till I get the bumpers chromed. Also got all of the z06 brakes installed. I do have to say Tobin does make a nice kit real easy to install and all of the brackets are quality pieces. Now on to wiring the whole car should be fun have many hours ahead of me.

Its a 5.3 from a 2004 tahoe I had the heads ported and bigger valves and installed a different cam other then that the motor is pretty much stock. The fitech so far is going good only a couple of little things that need to be smoothed.

Care to elaborate on what the "little things" you're experiencing are?

One of them was the idle stayed up a little when coming to a stop but i got that figured out by adjusting the iac. The other one i am experiencing is when going full throttle fast it seems to hesitate a little bit but if i ease into it, it has no issues.

Thanks for the info. I'm goig to help install one of these FITech kits on a buddys 71 ElCamino. It's semi radical (427sbc; 10.5:1; AFR 235's; agressive hyd roller profile/low vacuum & a Victor intake) so I'm concerned. I tried talking him into doing the Holley Terminator or something similar but the FITech guys are telling him it will work fine & he likes their price + easier appearing install.

Hi Zak....Once again, car is stunning!! On your front end set-up, what control arms, shocks, spindles did you use. I'm in the planning process on my 70 build...already have the 12 bolt and quadra-link set up. While my car will most likely see a little auto cross....it will be mostly a street car with a bunch of LS HP (LSA). For the driving you have done...how do you feel the front end components you chose are working out?? The stance on your car is killer!! I am leaning towards the DSE front sub, but that comes at a cost..... However, the numbers (cost) for control arms, shocks, spindles, steering box, sway bar seem to approach the cost for an aftermarket.....

Thanks, Dave

I have the global west upper and lower control arms and did the custom works performance coil over conversion that is a bracket welded in the pocket not just the coil spring coil over. I went with the cpp c5 spindle so the z06 brakes bolted right up. So far all i have done is just drive it around town and threw it through some corners and it handles and feels real good but its hard for me to say since i haven't driven a car with one of the aftermarket sub frames. The only reason I went with the global west control arms was a buddy went to wide of wheel and had to get some arms that were narrower so i got them at a really good price but they are a really nice piece.

WOW. The engine looks awesome! Excellent choice for the color. Def. different. Is the Z06 front calipers 6 piston? What about the rears? The CPP C5 spindles look promising. WHat master cylinder did you have to use for the Zo6 brakes?

again...... WOW. LOL Thanks for sharing

Thanks and the fronts are the 6 piston z06 calipers and the rears are the 4 piston z06 calipers. The master cylinder setup I got from Custom Works Performance i told Keith what brakes I was using and he set me up with the right bore size.

Nice build.

Who's pulley/accessory drive setup is the?

Thanks
Craig

Thanks and the front accessory drive setup is from Wegner Motorsports
