Hey all,
Just wanted to make a quick announcement that the show is on tonight at 9PM Eastern and 6 PM Pacific.
Go set your DVRs or get your beverages and snacks right now and get to your TVs! NOW! ;)
Find it on NBCSN.
If necessary, this message can be removed later tonight. I didn't mean to clog up the forum with notices about Big Red.
Here's a cool vintage shot of RJ next to Big Red back in the day! :)

Awesome show!!!
2 Things that really blew my mind:
1 - That road is 90 miles long with no houses..
2 - 11 Mile straight stretch at over 200 mph..
You guys rock!!!!!
Look forward to episode 2!!

Thoroughly enjoyed the show! Much better production than most car shows. It comes off as a documentary, not at all like a typical car show.
I will be very disappointed when the season is over & hope you make more of these.
RJ, you are one bad hombre. Not sure how you get your cojones under the submarine strap!

Big Red is ingrained into me since I was 17 when it set the world on fire at Silver State. To this day the original car is still my favorite of all 69 Camaros.

The first time I saw Big Red in Hot Rod magazine I was hooked. Loved the fact that the "supercars" of the late 1980's had their doors blown off by a young racer in a bad ass 1969 Camaro with a crazy fast engine and the ability to use them as they were designed, to go wicked fast. Unlimited fast. Typical, they changed the rules of the race after RJ and Big Red embarrassed them.
I'm so amazed that a car that was a pathfinder of the sport known as "Pro Touring" is still spanking and putting the hurt on cars that have been give the title "supercars" 30 years later.
RJ, you are the MAN!!
Big Red, it is the MACHINE!!
Race On!!

Its channel 220 on direct tv. I set my dvr to record the series. The first time I saw a 69 Camaro, I wanted one. I remember reading about Big Red in high school. and wanting one even more.
All I have to say is running a 69 Camaro at 220 mph plus is just insane. RJ, the crew, and Big Red are just awesome. Can't wait for the next show.
Very well done feature IMO.
FWIW - Seeing Big Red's performance in the '89 Silver State and all the well deserved hype that followed was what drove me to finally buy a '69 Camaro that year. The desire started in 1975 at high school when a friend bought a clean '69 Z/28. After about the third good ride in his car I wanted one bad, it didn't help that he was dating my next door neighbor when he first bought the car........the rest is history.

Neil B, Thanks for your support. Everyone who has watched the show is counted by the cable providers...even if you've recorded it on a DVR. All those numbers help us get ratings for a possible second season.
The rumble strip makes quite a racket in the car at high speed. You want as little as possible, so staying centered was important when we could.

Thanks DETON8R! We definitely had some competition who wasn't happy when more people would flock around Big Red at the pre-race shows, instead of the expensive supercars. Over the years, those owners have come to understand and it's been a little fun rivalry...at least from what we can tell. We are glad to know we still had fans after the car came out of retirement. Thanks for your support and kind words.

If you send us your email address to "Instagram @bigredcamaro.com" (without the space before the @), we have an email list that will keep fans posted to the upcoming events and special deals on merchandise. Thanks for watching and for your kind words! It does get a little hairy at 220+ on the asphalt. Imagine what it's like on dirt and salt. ;) At least when we're on dirt and salt, we have the grille plugged to get some air around the car.

The more people who watch the show and DVR it, helps us get our numbers up. If it gets enough attention, we'll give it a shot at a second season.
That submarine belt does bunch up a little. I think Joe Pettit (navigator in the Silver State Classic Challenges) has even bigger "ones," since he doesn't even have control of the car! ;)

I must have been living under a rock back in the late 80s as I missed the whole "Big Red" phenomenon back then.
I've followed Big Red along loosely in the past few years since becoming involved in this arena of cars and driving and I am really enjoying the way this show is put together reliving what had to have been an absolute blast for those involved with Big Red all along.
Thank you so much for putting the work in back then that has allowed you to share your story with us now in a quality way. Can't wait for more episodes.

Mike,
We really tried to get out there and mix it up. There's a completely different setup for most types of events. Going from landspeed to track can take 3 weeks (it's a small crew and a working shop). For instance, we have multiple locations that we add lead ballast...about 1400 lbs total for Bonneville.
Thanks for watching and for your support!

What I like about the show it the honesty.
All of us hacks out here working alone in our garage look at the cars in the magazines like Big Red and think how easy it must be with all that help to engineer and construct a great car. Then you watch the show, and a Transmission breaks - twice, then you see an engine dyno resulting in less than ideal results.
There is some comfort that even with high level cars like Big Red, problems still kick you in the ass and all you can do is work through it without drama just like we do.
I’m not even a Camaro fan and I’ve been a fan of Big Red from the beginning because to me it represents an amazingly well built, and hard driven hot rod. Even better that it was built in the 80’s and brought out of mothballs to still kick some tail.:warning:

Excellent work on these shows. In the past, I've had the opportunity to participate in the Silver State, Texas Mile, and events at Willow Springs. This TV series with Big Red at these venues portrays a true grassroots racing perspective on what it is really like to run these events. It's almost like being there (without all the work). It has been a great trip down memory road for me.

This series is right on the mark so far. The right amount of REALITY injected and a great mix of the people and the car and events themselves.
I got my wife to watch this 3rd episode with me and she enjoyed it more than she figured she would. She kept saying "Put in the MONSTER!" towards the end.

RJ,
I agree with all the positive comments about the show, great work! As a car guy for over 50+ years this is exactly the kind of car show that I want to watch with no gratuitous drama.
One thing I'm curious about is have you considered installing a T56 Magnum in Big Red? I can tell you that after switching Dust Off to a T56 Magnum I now see just how limiting a four speed really is. The 6 speed gives you so many more options for rear end gearing. I would think the two overdrive gears would be the hot ticket for all of those high speed events.

Bill,
That was the last time for that event for the episodes. We may return there in the future. The Mojave Mile/Mojave Magnum (1.5 miles) is right in our back yard, so it's sometimes hard to justify going real far for a mile event unless we have more similar events we can hit while on the road.
However, Episode 4 is going to have some awesome footage of the Virginia City Hill Climb. We really pulled out all the stops while filming this one!

Mike and Rodney,
It's great to hear that people like something that's a departure from typical made up drama trying to make a car program interesting. This is what we wanted, so we were able to make the series without all the Hollywood types making us add more than what is real.
Believe me, we've had our share of problems on the track and with failed parts. Why not make lemonade? :)
After finally getting to watch the Texas Mile episode last night one of the things that impresses me most about Big Red and all three episodes is the true grassroots nature of the crew/team and operations.

Well, I finally found the channel on my cable. Watched the hill climb last night. What an awesome show. Love the attitude, "Well we have no clutch, haul it back and we'll see what it is"
Not, "OMG, we have no clutch, what are we going to do, who can we call, there's not one within 1000 miles from here" type of show that we are forced to see these days.
This car is amazing. But what is more amazing is RJ's attitude and skill to drive this thing anywhere, anytime, as hard as he can.

It's apparent it's a class act and so is everyone involved. Please answer me this: Why not a mechanical linkage clutch? Because heat, maybe? Or motor setback in chassis? One more thing, PLEASE open your show with a duet of Joan Jett and Billy Idol. They rock like you guys! :bitchslap:

Sean,
Thanks for your comments about the show. swapping out the mechanical linkage for the hydraulic unit was done for a few reasons. One of the top ones is the reduced pressure required to operate the clutch. It allows me to focus more on everything else important while in a longer race, instead of overworking my clutch leg when the clutch gets used a lot.
Thanks for the idea on the music. We're always open to suggestions.

The setup for the Elephant (supercharged setup), uses a radiator mounted in the trunk. I post a lot of detail shots of items like this on my Instagram feed @thebigredcamaro Are you on Instargram?

Let me know your Instagram name and I'll follow you back. Most of those detail shots are a few weeks back. Look for more coming up in our feed...just for you. ;)

RJ,
I saw a video on your facebook page that Big Red passed the 250 mph goal in the 1.5 mile event. To top it off, the engine was detuned to 1600 hp from 1900 hp.
Congrats and keep smashing records with Big Red.
