I was totally surprised by the final 5 except for the Vette. They were all great but the ones that were left out was equally if not more impressive. Ring bros Chevelle, any of the 3 chargers were deserving more imo. And even though the rs mustang was my favorite of the whole show it wasn't nearly as impressive as others
What's with the hood on the camaro?
Any other pics of the finalist?

Are you serious? First year I have not been in the last six years, and even I can tell from the pics I have seen that something is not right. I am not taking away from the ones that got picked, but imo it should have been DSE, Cal Auto, Big Oak, RS Chevelle, and RB Chevelle. Heavy hitters not even getting a nod seems like a snub to me. I know it was a large field this year, but come on, I smell BS here.

As with everything else in this world, when things seem to start getting too big of a show, event, class, etc....MONEY and POLITICS will surely sneak in and takeover. It doesn't matter how honest things will try to be at first, but with the success of anything and they growth of that thing comes value. MONEY is that value, money has value, money equates to value. And wherever there's money....surely there's POLITICS.

This year was interesting all the way around. The change to keep the SMOY and SROY contenders in the building was different, and kind of nice. When they chose the Top 5 in each category, and then tried to talk over the engines and DJ, coordinate, and manage bringing the 10 vehicles to the front, interview the owners and builders, and then - finally - get to the awards - it showed the idea wasn't fully fleshed out before being initiated.
It was definitely nice to have them all in the building at the end, but not very well executed. I was more than fidgety in my seat by the time the winners were announced - and then they still wanted people to sit tight for the giveaway unveiling - no way.
The biggest issue: I had no incentive to return today. The weather seems (from my home) to have held up, but I really saw all I wanted to see yesterday... I used to go back on Sundays for the All-American show, and to cap the event off with the Big 10 in the building and (hopefully) some good ol rock and roll.
I don't mean to sound negative - just an opinion on the new order of events. Overall, I loved the show this year. I was in 7th Heaven. I did the after party Friday, slept three hours, the show all day Saturday, then after parties at both host hotels Saturday, before my adrenaline finally wore down enough to get a full night's sleep.
I love this show.

I think Ring Bros had "technical difficulties" that may of took them out of contention.
I'm surprised DSE would of left over sour grapes. They won a best product award with their 3rd gen stuff. Sunday allows those cars, so I would think they'd be more concerned with promoting parts then SMOY.

I was surprised by the picks. There were some awesome cars there this year for sure.
Who are the judges? - -just curious as to what their background and qualifications are. It may shed some light as to what they are looking for/at.... Who knows? As the saying goes...opinions are like a certain part of the anatomy!

I think that's just the nature of the beast in the hot rodding community, where it's relatively tight knit and small, and everyone has connections of some kind.
The builds these days have become so impressive I will definitely remember the standouts for their details and design, an almost assuredly forget about who won what.

They did a second lap. They just got it started before the time ran out. Sounds like it was just a fuel pump issue and nothing big.

It was an unbelievable field. That impala was super cool. So was the silver vette. I think 2 cars were dropped at auto x. One ran out of gas and one didn't have seat belts and failed tech. Anyone could argue for any one of almost the entire field to win. I can only imagine this must be something like a photo finish for the judges.

That's good news then! BUT, adds even more question as to why they didn't make the top 5. THat 65 RS Stang was nice, but nothing out of this world like Recoil, the G3 69, Australian Nova, RS Charger, and the list goes on.

For me personally, I loved the DSE Charger and the Gray '62 Impala. On another note, I really can't believe the build costs on these cars. From "rumors", $350k to over a mil!! Where does it end? I thought I was crazy for what I spent on my DSE Trans AM, it would be on the lower end of that scale! Lots of nice ideas, fit and finish though.

I would hate to be a judge at this level.
How do you choose between these cars? It's like picking your favorite child I'm sure.
Some are more noticeably modified...while others are more subtle. Some have more cool gadgets, while some are "cleaner".
Do you like '32 Fords more, or '69 Camaros? Or, are '40 Fords your fav?
Do you like stacks...or the engine covered?
Shiny, or matte?
1 winner, 4 cars that easily could have been. And 20 more that easily could have played.
I would have nightmares! No thank you....

Having known Kyle and most of the guys at DSE, I don't see them being that way. To me, Kyle and DSE remind me of my old buddy, John Lingenfelter. He was a class act, let his cars and workmanship do all the talking. Do I think DSE got screwed, YES. The street machine award should go to a real street machine, not show cars. In my opinion, there were several other cars that deserved to be in at least the top 5. I think there was some bs. politics going on, which for everyone was not fair. I think Good Guys need to regroup and learn from this otherwise the SMOY award may not ever mean the same thing..

As many of you have already said, some truly incredible cars at this level. Some I loved for the paint color, some I loved for the theme of the car, some I loved for what they left alone, and some for what they changed. I bumped into a dozen people while in my trance and stepped on several toes while I was trying to soak in every detail. I could not pick a single winner on craftsmanship alone, completely impossible.
I do remember telling my wife that the brushed trim on the winner looked out of place to my eyes. Something about the car's different color combinations and the brushed seemed to clash. Just goes to show, I don't know squat about styling cuz they gots the big trophy!
I do love brushed trim and I eyed every bit of it on the Vette closely, someone put a ton of man hours in that part alone.

Just because I don't like something about a car, does not mean I exclude it from my list. The RS Chevelle is one of them. The front end is not my taste, but the rear is perfection. Just because I don't care for the styling, you can't deny the level of craftsmanship and quality in that car. I saw it at SEMA, its incredible, the amount of restyling in that car is incredible. It is a top 5 car hands down. The more I think about it, the more I think about Brycen's statement about older builds. Do you think the judges may have been jaded because they had already seen the cars at SEMA, or watched the entire build on the internet somewhere?

Judging is also about opinion and what the judge likes personally, I for one liked the picks, wasn't the common Ring Brothers, Dse picks.
The corvette is a cool car and deserving of the pick. I would have picked the blue roadster shop corvette for a top 5 also. but that's just me
we would all pick differently
In a field of stunning cars, the white corvette that won was the most stunning. The design, fit, and finish is what made it the best amongst the best.

Ah, "Snowblind" the white Camaro. We ran into some paint issues that we wernt happy about so it was stripped and repainted, a slight detour in its planned debut! The good news is its back together and will be at West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton. EBMC was represented in Columbus though, as 2 of the top 5 SMOTY's were equipped with a EBMC/Keefer Design fuel filler. Proud to have played a small role in those incredible cars!
