Hello Everyone,

Thought it would be fun to post a blog thread of our 2015 Journey with our shop and events we compete in or shows we attend. So here we go...

This past weekend May 29th and 30th we went to the Midwest Musclecar Challenge at Putnam Park and Terra Haute International Airport. Putnam was a day of road racing 4 - 20 minute sessions with different opportunities to win from top speed, fast lap, etc. At the airport we competed in autocross which held a shoot out to top ten and then a shoot out to top five.

Little Car History:
2000 Pontiac Trans-Am Firebird
* LS1 no mods other than Pacesetter Headers and Borla Exhaust
* HoosierPE designed Panhard bar
* HoosierPE Design and Tuned AFCO Racing Double Adjustable Street/Race Suspension and upgraded swaybar package and control arms
* 18X10 Grandsport wheels with 315 35 18 BF Goodrich Rival S all four
* HoosierPE 4pt CAM Lock SFI Alum Racing Harness
* Corvette upgraded brake system
* Eaton LSD

Friday 29th at Putnam (Road course):
We are still waiting for the official times from our laps at Putnam, but with our stop watch technology we were showing 1:23 to 1:24 lap times. Owner John Fehring has not spend a lot of time wheeling the car on road racing, so there was some nerves that was not full committed to when entering a few of the braking zones to improve times. We were setup with on hell of an instructor to pilot through the course. Cody Mason was our instructor, and we hope we can get him again for future event there. John and Cody did very well and complimented each other through the process.

Car performed great on corner entry and exit. Well balanced and planted. Through our process of design the fbody Afco shock system, we felt we achieved a great tuned shock for the car. We will be competing in the OSCA NCM Motorsports Park event this weekend to confirm more of our data and feeling about our product.

One failure point we will monitor is our differential. With the sessions through the day, it seemed to increase backlash on the gears and ran extremely hot towards the end. We plan to put some monitoring systems in place to keep track temps and potentially install a differential oil cooler.

The Rival S tire was awesome and showed even wear through the laps. The grip allowed John to pilot the stock weight TA through the road course with confidence. We have a couple more sets on order though... these "200" tread wear tires are SOFT.

Friday Road Rally to Dinner:
Thanks to BF Goodrich and the family who housed us for the wonderful dinner. The rally there was a neat trip, the convo got lost a couple times - but when we made it! It was a great scene to see all the muscle cars lined up in the owner's front lawn, photo below.

Saturday 30th at Airport (Autocross Shoot Out):
We had success and trauma at the autocross. The day started out good, we monitored tire temps early on and the body control John had on the first few laps. Lead Engineer Scott Lewis road passenger on a couple runs to watch driver input and feel how the car was responded as well. After the few runs of mid 30 seconds to 31, we made a couple adjustments to the Afco shocks and told John to improve on a couple of driver inputs and on his next run got his times in the mid 29 seconds. Very exciting to see us get below the 30's, as this helped our average to get into the top ten shoot out.

The following is a report from John from the USCA facebook page photo comment about his autocross runs.
It was a bitter sweet weekend. The car set up was outstanding with our custom tune on our Afco shocks and springs. It was very predictable on the track and on the auto-X course. Need to increase never and speed on the track and may have the opportunity with some new Hp. We made it into the top 10 shoot out and was actual in 2nd place going into that round. Ripped off 3 nearly identical runs of 29.8, but coned on my last run. With the cone, i was number 5 going into the top 5 shoot out. I was last car out and ran about the same time again putting me in first after the first of 3 passes. But i came in with an engine knock. Went ahead and made the second run, tried to short shift to save the motor and finished with severe engine knock. The race prepped Corvette had issues on his first run, so I was still in the mix. I'm the last guy up for the third and final run. I decide since I won't spoil the track for anyone behind me, I try to make a final pass. Blew the motor about 150 ft from the finish line. So I think I finished 5th for the Auto-X. Hope to have new motor in by this weekend.... Stay tuned.

Exciting event for us. The MWMC was our first big event for 2015 and with all our data from the car and the components we have been working hard on all winter and spring, it was wonderful to see it all come together.

Current Progress and Update:
We are currently in the progress of installing a new LS3 create motor in the old bird. Engine is on the ground now and moving forward to taking old "needed" items from the LS1 and install them on the LS3. We have all the components needed for a complete swap and looking forward to the crank over!

Ryan's expression "Hai engine wy uuu broken soo much!?" Translation: Why you brake on us engine?!?!

We ended up doing the swap at the Fehring Ranch instead of the shop, due to John's day job schedule and the distance of the shop from his house. The 45 minute trip is time needed to get all we need done to compete this weekend at NCM.

Thanks for checking out our 2015 Journey and more updates to come from the swap...

Cheers,

LS3 Engine Swap UPDATE: 6/8/2015

This past weekend at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green KY was USCA Event #3, which we had full intentions in attending. That was if everything in the LS3 swap in our 2000 TransAm would fall into place...

Our LS1 motor blew chunks at the Midwest Musclecar Challenge the weekend before and gave us the challenge and opportunity to give the car some much needed horse power for the road course portions of these types of events. When competing, the car held its own in the autox, but lagged on the power on road course segments. At one point we were thinking of upgrading the cam and a few other things on the LS1, but when the motor blew - LS3 became the better option for us.

Monday June 1st we placed our order with Pace Performance and setup our pick date for Tuesday morning to get the engine. Shop owner Rhonda got back mid-afternoon to the shop for some quick items to pick up and then heading to the Fehring Ranch to start the install.

From Tuesday 4pm to Saturday 3am.... it was a week of busting butt. As we worked through the swap process, it seemed like we were going good - then 10% of everything we touched wanted to give us growing pains and cause us extra work here and there, eating up precious time we did not have time to loose.

1st, The Holley Throttle Body we bought for the swap had to be adapted to fit the LS3 throttle bracket. Nothing like drilling out a new part and threading it to fit stock part... ;/ We did this task on Wednesday morning.

2nd,the oil pan that was picked up was not the correct one. It did not have the raise in the bottom of the pan to help clear the k member and this caused us to make a trip to Jeg's in Delaware Ohio to pick up the correct one. Why Jeg's? Only one available that was closes enough to drive to and be back in time to install Friday afternoon. We were doing everything to make the trip to NCM.

3rd, Everything coming together. We have the motor in the car, getting all the plugs connected and the bits and pieces back that was removed to get the motor out. At this point, it is around 2:30am and a couple of us was functioning on being up for almost 20 hours. The first fire up is on its way. The tuner is in the car and we get in position to watch for leaks and listen for bad sounds. Key turns over and the car starts up on first try!! But then there is a pop! Fairly loud but not engine sounding... the Fehring daughter yells out there is liquid on the ground. We yell out to shut it down! Turns out our power steering pump exploded... great right - we were glad it was not engine at this point. Now we have to get this cleaned up and remove the broken filter and put an inline barb fitting and gave it a second try.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8832/18613804171_1ed1a0fe5f_z.jpg

4th, Tuner does a couple tweaks to the program and we turn the engine over again and she is sound great. That is until we hear a pulley squeaking for dear life. After investigation, we find out our new AC Delco alternator is junk. It was running on load and getting excessively hot. We also was seeing temperatures we did not like from the thermostat. Investigation there showed we needed to order a non-integrated LS1 thermostat housing for the water pump to give the correct fitment for the 160* thermostat install.

After all that we have hit 3:30 am. It is way too late to make registration check in and tech for the NCM event. Our thought was to make the drive and just make it in time - but the car gods had another plan for us.

Maybe it was a good thing... everything happens for a reason and we will take this lose and push forward, as there is more racing events ahead of us.

So right now we have the items needed to get this on the road ordered and looking to have it ready for a local autocross in Auburn Indiana this weekend. Then off the Michigan International Speedway for the USCA Goodguys event June 20th and 21st!! Wish us luck!

July 28th, 2015 UPDATE:

Been awhile since our last post, we have been working hard here at the shop finalizing our AFCO shock setup on the TA and working out the tune on the new LS3 swap motor. The past month has been chuck full of a couple local autocross events and then we raced in the USCA Event #4 at MIS and just recently wrapped up the USCA Motor State Challenge this past weekend.

LS3 Swap:
This swap has served to be a great upgrade form the OEM LS motor giving us the extra horsepower on the road course sections of these events and has helped also put the power down out of the hole when autocrossing to. We still need to finish our tune on the car to get it really dialed in, but we really like the extra power the motor is giving us.

The swap was fairly simple install. We actually would like to do it again, especially knowing some of the untold items out there that were needed to make the process a lot smoother. Our plan is to do a build blog on this, all in time - we are a small group here carrying a lot of different jobs at the shop ;)

AFCO Racing (our tuned) DBL Adjustable Shocks:
We are really happy with the performance and the support we are getting from the AFCO Racing team. We are breaking ground in the street car performance with the shocks were are tuning and developing with AFCO. The TA can really dance out on course and with a few clicks it offers a beautiful street ride. These were the goals we were trying to hit with our mission to develop these systems. Our goal is to have an August release on the system we are running on the TA with separate shocks to full car packages available.

The system is using OEM mounted point to give us the optimal ride frequencies for our customers. The shocks will have non-adjustable, single adjustable, and double adjustable options. More on that when we finalize a couple more things...

Past Racing Events:
The local autocrosses were very helpful for some testing on the products we are working on. John had won his CAM class in most of them.

We also was able to make our first Optima USCA event at Michigan International Speedway. Missing NCM event #3 due to not getting the LS3 swap complete, we were really looking forward to event #4. Our performance at event #4 was really good and we learned a lot about a couple issues we were having with the tune on the engine and got us some more road racing time on the car setup. The shock system did what we asked of it and more. We placed around mid pack giving us motivation to improve at the next event! We even met some old autocross friends and saw the awesome collection of LPE. This was a very fun event and look forward to future ones.

This past weekend we raced at the USCA 7th Annual Motor State Challenge at Gingerman and Tire Rack. We improved on our road racing and made very little adjustments from our last road racing event. We still have some durability items we need to finish up (diff cooler, accu-sump, temp gauges) and also put some more seat time for John to get improved lines in the car.

The last day of the event was the autocross at Tire Rack test facility in South Bend. Autocross is one of our stronger parts for our team and we knew the TA was ready to rock 'n roll. We had a slow start getting the Driver Mod to kick in, but when it did - we were able to lay down a smokin' time on our second to last run. The previous runs were good, just ran a dirty with cones.

https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xta1/t31.0-8/11779799_930702976972660_8473819939569220845_o.jpg

Jeff Schwartz had amazing run on the road course in his C7, dominating everyone on times with a 1:39.626, a second faster than Jim McKamey. Jim threw down a smoking run of 35.965 in the first heat of the autocross that surely secured the FTD. This then was over taken later by HoosierPE owner John Fehring. When we heard John's 35.866 was the FTD for the autocross, we knew we made it in the trophies for the event. Then were heard the news that Jeff Schwartz, Jim McKamey, and John were all tied up on the event points. We all had 21 points!! MSD events rules handle tie-brakers by the autocross ranking. So.... that smoking run John did, gave him 1st in autocross in the MFG Late Model Class and secured the deal for overall winner of the event in the class.

It was amazing weekend and a much needed win for us. The next few weeks we have a big schedule of events of autocross with SCCA. Local Hoosier Challenge at Grissom AFB in Peru, IN this weekend and then the Speedway CAM East Challenge at Grissom again the following weekend. We have registered for the Ohio Muscle Car Challenge to. Then here comes September and the SCCA Solo Nationals Championships! Stay tuned for more updates and here is a quick video of our FTD run this past weekend - #shavingcones!!

Cheers.
