In 2008, the longtime dream to create my own custom car began with the vision that was not only to build a car that was WWII aircraft themed but is actually built like a WWII aircraft. Initial ideas were formed and chassis fabrication began. 50+ hours later, I had my frame started. But as is true for all things worth doing right, time was needed for the vision and design to merge into the picture of what I really want out of this build. Seven years later, I am finally in a place where I can make this dream a reality. The designs in my head have never been clearer about what I want to assemble and based on sketches I had done, my friend and co-worker Matt Sutton of Sutton Designs rendered the “Ruptured Duck”. It is time for the execution phase to move forward, as I am working to construct a car that will have very unique and never-before-seen styling, mixed with technology and performance to place it in a class of its own.
Imagine what you would get if you combined the famous World War II B-25 Mitchell bomber, the “Ruptured Duck”, with the performance and technology of a modern sports car. Then stir that in with some vintage 30’s style. With this in mind, I present to you the “Ruptured Duck.”
https://photos.smugmug.com/Project-ruptured-duck/i-mvgbfXX/0/78f6f496/XL/1469263259000f6b41f8a0c96ca49d8576789b8f9e2ab340c5 bfa224ebd35d1db1edc8cda9df224485f405504f0830cf63db 2148ee51af3852487212c0e04cef934f1dac9fd39-XL.jpg (https://prddesign.smugmug.com/Project-ruptured-duck/i-mvgbfXX/A)
This 100% hand-built aluminum body will incorporate the design and styling of the B-25 Mitchell bomber glass nose and windshield, with the three window 30s coupe rear roof and truck shapes. The car will feature a full belly pan and B-25 bomber inspired wheels.
The history behind the build adds depth and detail to the design, giving the car a story that takes you back to the early 1940s.
Ruptured Duck History
The “Ruptured Duck” #40-2261 B-25 Mitchell bomber was the #7 bomber to take-off of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet and bomb Japan in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Flown by Pilot Lt. T.W. Lawson, Co-Pilot Lt. D. Davenport, Navigator Lt. C.L. McClure, Bombardier Lt. R.S. Clever, and Engineer Gunner Sgt. D.J. Thatcher off of the aircraft carrier on April 18th, 1942. The crew of the “Ruptured Duck’ succeeded in its mission to bomb Japan and then headed toward China to land in safety, but because of early mission launching they ran out of fuel and were forced to abandon the plane, crashing into the China Sea. The “Ruptured Duck” was made famous mainly because of the book and movie 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, which was written by Pilot Lt. Ted W. Lawson.
The back story of the name “Ruptured Duck” stems from the practice airfields where the bomber crews were learning how to take off of an aircraft carrier. One member of a flight crew thought that the bomber looked like an injured bird skipping across the runway during practice take-offs, and the term “Ruptured Duck” came to mind. This was based on the slang name for an honorable discharged veteran and pin given to those veterans called a “Ruptured Duck”. When they called Lawson’s plane this same name, it stuck. A fellow crew member painted the nose art onto the nose of the bomber. The unique history and importance behind the “Ruptured Duck” and its name are reasons why I chose the name for this build.

December 7th, 2016 was the 75th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, and I feel that the timing of this build would be the perfect way to honor all of those who embarked on this dangerous and brave mission as well as every soldier who has fought for our country then and now.
Project Detail Outline
• Body
The body of the Duck will be built out of aluminum with an overall shape resembling a fenderless 1930s car. What will set this car apart is that it will have heavy styling from the B-25 bomber, which will focus on the rounded glass nose and rounded front windshield. The nose of the B-25 has lines that allow it to flow into the main body of the car and easily make it a natural fit. The goal is to build it with the most amount of bomber feel without taking the aircraft theme to such an industrial level. It will be easily recognizable for its bomber style and glass nose but it will be built in a tasteful, sleek, and modern way. The nose of the car will allow an easy transition into the full salt flat style belly pan underneath of the car and also keeps the body looking like the shape of the B-25. The windshield will be curved horizontally, with a smaller upper section following the main glass, which is a green-tinted glass that allows visibility and sunshade just the way the B-25 did. The back window of the coupe will also feature curved glass and will flow with the shape of the roof to allow for maximum rear visibility. The rear section of the car will feature a vented trunk lid and air intakes in the belly pan to allow air to travel through to the rear-mounted radiator.
• Chassis
The chassis consists of 1 ½” x .120 wall round tubing which is fully TIG welded and will feature a custom-designed independent front suspension built around Wilwood pro spindles. Stopping the car will be front and rear 14” Wilwood disc brakes with 6 piston calipers. Holding the car up will be cantilever mounted Ridetech coil-overs. The power will be sent to the 2015 Ford Mustang independent rear suspension. Setting all of this on the ground will be a custom-built set of wheels by Hot Rods by Boyd that will closely resemble the landing gear of the B-25 bomber. They will be staggered, 19”x9” in front and 20’’x10.5” rear wheels and will have the name Duck machined into the face of each wheel.
• Drivetrain
The drivetrain of choice for the Duck was chosen with a few things in mind. I wanted the car to have a unique engine yet I also wanted it to offer modern performance and reliability. For these reasons, the car will feature the new Ford 2.3L Ecoboost and 6-speed manual transmission. The engine will be a main focal point of the build because it will be 100% visible behind the glass nose of the Duck. The modern design and performance of this engine will take the performance of this lightweight, aluminum car to the next level.
• Interior
As with the rest of the car, the interior will be extreme in its details but tasteful in its style. The inside of a B-25 has a lot of unique design and styling that will carry over nicely in automotive form. Custom bomber style seats will be crafted to bring a more modern performance and comfort to the classic style seat. Handcrafted interior panels such as the dash, console, headliner, and door panels will bring the interior to life and give the undeniable feeling that you are in the seat of a B-25. Incorporating military design into the interior while maintaining style, comfort, and modern amenities such as air conditioning, stereo, and keyless entry will also make the car’s interior unique.
RUPTURED DUCK FOR CHARITY!!!

I am proud to share with you guys that the Ruptured Duck is now an official proud supporter of the Homes for Our Troops charity!
This means that I have committed to donating 45% of the sale of the completed car to their cause! I am very excited about this opportunity to help severely injured veterans whose sacrifices will never be thanked enough.
What they do is amazing. They build mortgage-free homes wherever a veteran chooses, and it is built specifically to suit the need of the veteran and their family. They also provide continuing support to them for a few years after to make sure that they are set for their future in owning a home.

I am going to form it out of metal first. Then once I lay at the "glass" panels I will cut the templates out and have thick lexan formed to each piece.

Here is some updates for everyone.
I welded out the new front clip, set the chassis on the table at ride height and proceeded to cut the the old center section out and narrowed the rails 4 inches. This was another design change that was decided when I switched the suspension plan to IFS.

Absolutely awesome! The precision of your work is incredible!
I'm sure you've already considered it but... Any thoughts on maybe a tasteful removable wing that mimics the shape of that iconic twin tail? Too much?
Seems like it would flow and accent that nose really well.
Anyway you do it, its gonna be awesome and I hope to see it in person some day!

Thanks for your enthusiasm! Your brain definitely works like mine. I have spent much time trying to figure out how to include the tail of the plane into the car. Its just so hard to figure out where the line of too much is. I obviously want it to look like the B25 but I also want it to have timeless style. With that said I have not yet figured out how to cleanly incorporate the tail in a way to make it not so "in your face".
If I do I wont hesitate to share!

Ive been all about that car since the day it hit the magazines. Definitely one of my favorite builds of all time. I want this car to be the same kind of cool. I want it to scream B25 but in a way that nobody can dislike.
Would have liked to see you - but I like seeing the progress pics even better! LOL
Same here! Another time though, do you go to Columbus at all?

Thanks for your enthusiasm! Your brain definitely works like mine. I have spent much time trying to figure out how to include the tail of the plane into the car. Its just so hard to figure out where the line of too much is. I obviously want it to look like the B25 but I also want it to have timeless style. With that said I have not yet figured out how to cleanly incorporate the tail in a way to make it not so "in your face".
If I do I wont hesitate to share!
I hope you (and your awesome designer buddy) don't mind that I scribbled on your rendering. The more I look at it the more it feels like it needs a tail with nose and pinched brow. This may not even be close, just a thought.
Because a pictures worth at least 1000 words...

that very well may be the best version of a b25 tail ive seen for the car, however, I dont think that it goes with what I am trying to accomplish with the build. I appreciate your sketch though, it makes it road race looking for sure!
I think it takes away from the classic nature of the car thought. Mainly because I think it takes it from something that everyone can appreciate to something that a portion of people will look at as too much. I also dont want to lessen the impact of the nose and other details that it will have by taking your attention away from it.
Thanks for the input though. I love seeing others ideas!

Why not a rear diffuser with up turned "twin tails"?
Edit: so you only see it from the rear of the car. You have the classic nose, the side view, then get a full mitchell view from the a$$.

Good idea as well. Ill have to play around with that. The car is going to have a belly pan/diffuser I just haven't fully designed the tail end of the car yet.

Depends on what the weld is on, for the frame tube joints I used a 3" 80 grit to knock the weld off and then a 3" scotchbrite type disc to polish it off and blend it. Once done with that just a quick 150 DA scuff and thats it.

Ok, I can see that. No worries! The diffuser idea may be way more subtle.

well its been a while since I gave an update on the duck. so here you go.
I have been locking down the final body shapes and lines and because of that I spent quite a while laying things out on paper in the form of scale drawings. Once I locked in the side profile I wanted, I then moved onto a direct front view. Once this was finished I had both views printed out in full scale and from there used them to cut out the start of the wooden buck.
Here are the pictures. enjoy.

Its probably way too late now, but have you considered adding some big knock out holes in your cross boards in the buck? What I've seen of buck building, that really helps to be able to clamp the panel edges to the buck. Just a thought.
Looks awesome! Cant wait to see you start wheeling! Keep us updated!

Curious, why do you use 3/4 ply instead of 1/2 or even 1/4?
Is it for when your shaping the metal? more meat/wood to bend around?
Just curious, its def fun to watch..,,

Well the thicker plywood is stronger and lest flimsy, doesnt warp as easy over time. The metal wont be bent over the wood, just formed to fit the shape of it. Thanks for following along

Hey B - I have a question for you! If you build the body and weld it all up on the buck - how do you get the buck out from the inside?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Alright, help us fill in some of the steps here. I'm with you on shrinking the front 90* degree leg on the cowl; then for the second horizontal leg, did you run it through a turning die in a bead roller then stretch it, or hammer form over an anvil then stretch it back out?? I'm guessing the windshield flange used the same process?
3003 aluminum? What gauge?
Thanks for the lessons in sheet metal mastery! Can't wait to see more! :theresa:

It is .063 3003 H14 aluminum, I used our Lazze Beadroller to turn the flanges both directions in collaboration with the Eckold Kraftformer to shrink and stretch them into shape. I have 6 hours in both pieces as you see them in the pictures.

The same job can be done on machines that cost less, however the machines are like the Ferrari over the kia, you can still drive to work just not as fast.
At the end of the day its 11 years of practice that allows me to do what I do. I believe anyone could learn in that time

Holy shizznit... that's pimp!
You know, most people just bolt trim onto their car, not build it into the panel.
I am fighting something like that in my big rig build, where one of the panels we repurposed has trim built in... now I need to continue it down the side of the rig.

Haha well bolt on trim is a pain in the ass, so I just opted for body lines instead.
Thanks for your enthusiasm!

Incredible, incredible build!
Let me ask a few noob-ish questions if you don't mind:
How will you structurally reinforce the doors and body?
How will you mount the aluminum body to the steel chassis?
How will you get the glass made?
Where will the radiator go?
Will there be a 'hood'?

One idea if you've not figured out door handles yet: Use aircraft door handles for the doors. They are flush mounted and would be a nice touch IMHO.

Thanks for the interest and compliments! I will be building the structure much like any other car where I will build structure behind the panels that attach to the jams, floors, and rockers. the floor will have built in structure that will incorporate the body mounts. They will have rubber bushings and be through bolted to the chassis. The glass will be all custom made from acrylic. the glass nose will be the hood, you will be able to see the engine bay without opening the hood.
Thanks for sharing those handles! great idea. I have seen other ideas as well. so I will add these to the list to check into.
stay tuned a lot of update info and pics will be posted today!

UPDATES!!
Well, it has been a busy past few months here on the front lines of this build. I have been working hard on the build on multiple fronts and those efforts are paying off with some exciting progress!
The fabrication is coming along nicely and it is really starting to take shape. I am currently not far away from having the roof skin completed as well as the windshield frame. While it may seem like slow progress, I have also been working on the parts side of the build which is harder than building the car in my opinion. The parts will define this car as something more than just a custom body and my goal for this car has been modern parts and modern functionality. Achieving the details that I have wanted has been a long process and countless emails and corespondence to make my goals a reality. With this in mind, here is where a lot of progress has been made!
First off, thanks to Jesse Kershaw from Ford Racing for helping me out and keeping a small fry like myself in the loop on a unavailable engine that I have been talking with him about for over a year. with that said I am stoked to announce that I purchased one of the first 2.3L Ecoboost crate engines from ford last week and should have it in August! 310hp and 320lb/ft of torque should be a fun way power this light weight machine. They have also commited to supporting the build with the engine control pack when it is ready!
The next big items that I have been able to cross of my list are the brakes that are on order with Wilwood with custom coated calipers as well as the brake and clutch pedal assembly for the car! Thanks to Mike Scully from Wilwood for helping me outfit the car with the right parts and for keeping in my budget! the Goodyear Eagle F1 tires are in as well!
The last big news for the car has been the 2015 Mustang IRS that I purchased to make this car a litte more interesting. It just so happens that the track width was exactly what I was looking to run for the rear of the car so only very minor changes will be made to make it fit the plans for the car. I will be mounting it to the chassis in the coming weeks and the plan is to have the car rolling on its own weight by the end of August!
I have some more pending news but will wait until it is more official to announce it. For now, here come the Pictures!

Just when I didn't think it could get more interesting, you go throw 2015 Mustang IRS in the mix!
So are you able to purchase that set up new or is it a wrecked ebay deal already?
I swear this thread is like crack; excellent work!

It will go as a project. Whatever it looks like is how its going. I have an idea of how and what I want to have done by then. The completion date for the car (if all goes well) is april 18th 2017.

so last weekend I worked my butt off to get the new IRS mounted into the chassis so I can make this thing a roller for the Wings Over Camarillo air show coming up this week on the 20th and 21st. I cut off the old rear of the frame and remade it to accept the 2015 Ford Mustang IRS. here are the pictures

I bent this first tube all out of one piece.

the second tube wouldn't fit into the bender properly so I had to do a few joints

I then had to disassemble the rear of the buck so I could rework and cut out some room for the newly remodeled rear of the chassis.

once I had the chassis in place I bolted in the IRS and began reassembling the buck around it.

Incredible! Hope I get to see this in person someday.
Are you keeping the factory IRS cradle or re-making one of your own?

Like I mentioned in a previous post, I am getting the car ready to go to its first public showing at the Wings Over Camarillo air show here next weekend August 20th-21st. So with that, a lot of things are coming together for the car all at once, and it feels great. Yesterday with some help from my Ol' Man I was able to get the car looking a lot more like a car! while I worked on reassembling the buck he was busy cutting initial shapes for the nose of the car. once those were complete him and I tag teamed the nose to get it just about finished. enjoy!
