That is terrible looking.
Yes wheels can be way too big. IMHO

IMO it's totally dependant on the car. It needs to be able to keep the right stance and have the tires actually up in the fenders.

22's may be a bit much on a 1st gen camaro, but the one I have seen on 20/22's was NIIIICE :hail: Probably doesn't handle all that well but it looked great.

Building a 65 caddy, 22's are probably a little small :willy:

Want it to handle really well, 18's all around is the money setup.

Wheels are to big when they negatively affect the car or do not suit what the car does. Like 20's on a fast car is stupid as nobody makes a gripey tire. Or if you have to lift a car for the wheels. :_paranoid  :faint:

Sounds like a sweet ride. Everyone has their own taste but I like 18" wheels. Good luck.

IMO...17,18,19 are the sweet spot on F and X Bodies. You need to do a ton of work to the inner fenders to get bigger ones to look OK. I usually don't even spec a 20 until you're into a Chevelle (GM intermediate body) and then 22 in the rears is a definite max. Full size cars look best with 20/22 combo. SUVs and trucks are really the only time I would use 24+ size rims. My $.02

For a weekend cruiser thats bad to the bone :hail:

Here is another with 20/22's

If you're gonna do it, it HAS to be on bags and down plowing ant hills :D

The only tough call is to do 22's, or run 20x13 with 345/25/20's out back. Having 3ft of rear tire gives it quite a presence.

Either way it would be a money setup for driving around pulling girls

No,not if the car is low enough. As one member said he perfers 18's because it looks nice, well that's good but the question is do you want a nice looking car or one that's just BAD ASS...

I am running a 18/19 on my 69...its yellow with the hockey stripe as well.

back to your original question. I think you car looks great with 20/22

They make race tires in 18-inch.. so that's where I see the cutoff at from a "form over function" perspective. 17s are better performing (given the same type rim.. ie. forged, etc.). Sometimes you need an 18 to accomodate very large brakes but it's still not going to perform better than a 17 - all things being equal.

And there's nothing wrong with wanting to look nice. We're not building race cars, we're building street cars that perform.

I think your camaro looks good. if the car has good stance you can pull off 22's. I think a car running 22's needs major work so that it looks good at all heights which is usually slammed with ground clearance, like Johnsons cuda.

That is by far, the best looking car I've seen on 20/22s, but still I think it would look MUCH better on 17s or 18s.

You've got a killer stance. I didn't think it was possible for those sizes to look good.

That black car posted further down the topic is absolutely hideous IMHO though... too much difference between the front/rear sizes, and all cars look dumb when the wheels are cambered way in from dropping them so low on bags - it looks broken, not cool.

If we are limiting our discussion to "LOOKS" alone it is just a matter of ones personal opinion..
Most younger guys (30 and under) like the look of a well executed 20" or even 22" wheel on 1st gen cars..
Being an old fart (46) I do not like anything more than a 18" on most cars.
To me 22"+ wheels look cartoonish...

I just picked up a 97 Z with 17x 9.5 front and 18x 10.5 rear wheels . Rides much like the stock 2000 ss I had and actually doesnt look all that big on it.
By the way those 24's and 26's just look plain stupid in my opinion. In the 80's when 4x4's were so popular, most of them had less ground clearance!!!

you know i'm not positive anymore. The pic posted here sure looks like an 18 up front. But one in PHR is definitely a 20, and it's SLAMMED.

It looks mean on the 20/22's thats for darn sure.

345/25/21  Good god I would hate to be the guy trying to mount that one.

You know that bugatti veyron has a 365 rear tire :unibrow: No clue what the profile or wheel size is though, it's some funky euro measurement.

365-71 R 540. I figure thats somewhere around a 365/25/21 :hail:

We have 335x30x20 on the Cuda..They are Michelins that come on the Porsche Carrera GT..Michelin says they are they best streetable tire they make..they grip pretty dang good..we have 295x30x19 on the front..they are the front tires that also come on the Porsche. Good for well over 200mph..We looked at 22's on my 69 Camaro and the Cuda..We felt the best combo for looks was 20's rear, 18 or 19 front..22's just overpowered the car in our opinion..

Talk about being late at the party!!!!

I agree with the general consensus here, which seems to be that rims look good if you can make them fit with a normal stance on the car. The 22's shown are a little bigger than I would personally do, but they look like they fit at least. If you have to destroy your ride's suspension geometry to fit wheels, you are going way too big IMHO.

Cam69!

We need to talk!!!!

I just sold my 69 project on wednesday and got home last night with a new project....a 63 000 miles, stored since 82, 1 paint job, 1 owner (protecto plate, original b-o sale etc) Survivor, Azure turquoise convertible 69 Camaro!

I sold the coupe and the jig it was on (with all the new sheetmetal i had) to a friend when i learned about the 'vert ( in about a heartbeat) and the 'vert is still on the trailer as we speak.

I kept my 345 25 20, 12 bolt, LS1, ETC...All the PT parts i had stacked up....

Now i was beginning to wonder if a convertible can accomodate that much rubber? I read somewhere that because of the top rack you we're somewhat limited....Doesn't look like you are!

Car looks awesome! Feel free to pm me, i'd really like to get some more pics of your car.

You'll all can see my new project in my new page soon if you'd like, i would appreciate comments on the deal i got.

now that the body work is already done, I wouldn't suggest this. But in order to make those wheels flow with the car, I would have suggested opening the wheel openings front and back, or if you wanted to move the wheels out, just back. But not now since that very nice looking paint and body work has already been done. Stepping down to 20s will give you a better ride in addition to making it look a little better, plus Deep dishes on that would really set it off. Right now it looks too big for the wheel openings.

Either way, great ride.

Cam69,

Still lookin at your car....Gotta ask, why did you put custom rails in it? Didn't those tires fit in the stock style wheelhouses? (minitubbed of course)

'Love Pirelli huh? They make good sizes, i have assimetrico's in 345 25 20's and they are the only company makin those, they also make a killer 355 25 20's. When you want width...PIRELLI!

I'm debating if i should cut mine up (the 'vert) or not....I could do 285's on a 20 x 10 right now and call it done......but it would be hard when i know what a '345 looks like under it (my coupe).

I just tought you had mini tubbed your car and did it the simple way....I already have one thats in pieces and i bought the vert to enjoy while i build it as i figured with my life so full i don't have time to work on the car as much as i'd need to to get it out before it out of date stylewise... (even tough i already talked about taking the 'vert apart to blast the underside "just to make it clean".... you know where that'll get me right...)

Thanks for the pics! Now i'll have to measure carefully i guess...I'm looking at DSE's Q-Link and mini tubs for a clean job i could do over the winter.

Car looks great!
