View Full Version : Need 3.5 Acura Expert Asap!!!!!!!
I have a Acura TL TypeS in my shop . The car currently has 103000 miles on it. On cold starts the engine sounds fine. After about a minute it begins to make a knocking/ticking noise that last for about two minutes then goes away. I don't know if this is a common problem with these engines or if its a maintenance issue. Looking for some ideas for what to look for.

I would start with engine oil level/pressure, Belt tensioner, or valve adjustment.
I had a 2013 g35 coupe that would do the same thing on initial start up. I did regular maintenence regularly but never oil level checks because I was being lazy and my wife was the driver of it. I thought it was the belt tensioner and started to tear the engine down but stopped about 1/4 of the way and thought "let me check the oil" . Well there was nothing on the dip stick. Topped it off and put it back together and no further problems. Turns out those cars burn oil easy. I sold it that month.
Id keep it simple and start with the easy to check items.

That link ^^^^ is 28 pages of people guessing with no real answer. ...
No this one just does it on first cold startup at idle . As I said the first couple of minutes it sounds great then the knocking/ticking starts for about one to two minutes then goes away.

Could be that it has forged pistons and they need some heat to expand - until then they'll flop in the bore.... with 103,000 miles they're even looser in the bore than when it was new.
Pretty hard to guess what it is over the internet...
A slapping piston has a very recognizable "kerplunk" sound.
