I'm putting together a 69' Nova that I've had for about two years now. I figured I would start a build thread and catch it up to the condition it sits in now.

Pictures shortly.

Here is what I started with. The car looked like it was in decent shape inside and out. It had a tired 350 w/th350 setup in it when I picked it up.

After owning the car for about a month I decided to improve the handling and braking bit. I installed a DSE stage 1 kit, drop leafs, Kore3 c6 brakes up front, and some Vintage Wheel Works wheels.

Yes...I realize the caliper is on the wrong side in this picture (oops)

After seeing the car like this I was frustrated with the nose sticking up in the air. After re-checking and re-clocking the springs as well as driving it around to give it time to "settle" (not sure if that really happens?) nothing improved.

I started trying to pay more attention to the car and noticed some what of an issue with the subframe...and when I say issue I mean it looked like someone launched the car onto a boulder. They actually cut a hole in the crossmember of the frame to clear the crank pulley....

http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn3/jedediahs/IMG_20140226_174434028_zps9n1x8pd8.jpg (http://s300.photobucket.com/user/jedediahs/media/IMG_20140226_174434028_zps9n1x8pd8.jpg.html)

So what does any sane person do at this stage? Let the project spiral out of control of course.

I replaced the front sub with this:

As my car was sitting there on jack stands, I decided I like the way it looked in a non-operable state, so I decided to go further down the rabbit hole.

I ripped out the rear leafs and bought a quadralink setup:

Now that the car had basically everything removed from the underside, I thought it looked strange with all the trim, windows, and interior still in place...so I removed it all.

Honestly, the car was in pretty good shape. Other than the mess on the drivers side it had some pin holes around the front and back windows and needs a little work on the bottom passenger side quarter panel. The whole floor pan was perfect.

After the car was sitting for a while I realized I was going to be way to busy to tackle some of the stuck on the car. Also, acknowledging my remedial skills with a welder, I decided to have the suspension, tubs, and sub connectors installed, as well as have a new transmission/driveshaft tunnel fab'd up.

When we were installing the suspension, we modified the rear quadralink crossmember and the track bar mount to suck up into the body a bit. We also used 1/2 height bushing in front. In the end I think the extra time/expense was worth the stance that we ended up with.

Here is how it sits as of today with the ride height set.

Heh, boredom and money.

The plan all along was to do what I am doing now. It just wasn't meant to happen so soon. I wanted to do some small improvements to the car and actually be able to drive and enjoy it for a while before taking it out of commission.

Once I noticed the frame damage (sway bar couldn't be installed due to interference) I felt like I should pull the frame and deal with it. That was the turning point for me. I know I could have just sourced another stock frame and swapped things over, but it was just he push I needed to motivate and do what I actually wanted with the car.

Scott,
I'm being pretty indecisive on the engine choice. My goals for power I don't think are terribly hard to reach (~550 rwhp). Currently looking at going with a LS7 with a few subtle changes, or a LS3 416. I was originally looking at blown options but I just don't think that level of power is necessary for me personally. Plus, I'm trying to keep the weight down where I can.

Trey,
I have my fingers crossed on the ride height. That's sitting at 3" to the oil pan (of the mockup motor). I may be a bit too optimistic. My wheels should be showing up in a couple weeks and I'll be taking some more measurements. I suspect it will probably sit just a bit higher once I get the wheels on it.

Next up is to get the brakes sorted out. I'm using Ron Sutton's brake consultation service. I'd recommend this to anyone looking to setup their brakes properly. It's cheap piece of mind and he has been great to work with.

After that it's drive train and then back to metalworks for panel replacement and cage.

Well...I'm less that two months from ordering a motor and I'm having a hell of a time making a decision.

The crate motors currently in the running are the LSA and lsx454. A 416/417 ls3 is a possibility, but the torque seems to be a bit lower and come on later.

I can't seem to find weight info on the LSA with the heat-exchanger and all the ancillaries to compare against the lsx.

Since this is going to be 90% street car so I'm not interested in peak horse power and having to rev the engine out. I also know the LSA and LSX aren't the lightest options, but again ... not-race-car.

Any opinions on which way to go? I'm insanely indecisive.

Out of the choices given, go with a 416 LS3. Less weight is better no matter what you're doing. If you want better fuel mileage or a lighter more nimble car for handling.

That looks awesome. I modified my rear 4 link as well and ripped out the tunnel just like you did. To get full pinion/driveshaft/ujoint clearance at full compression and articulation, on a ride height of 4" from the ground to the subframe (no subframe connectors either) I ended up making a new tunnel that is 11" tall at the tallest point (relative to dip in floor pan behind driver/passenger seats) and looks damn similar to yours. I'm currently making a carpet for mine now and it's being a real PITA... will be eagerly awaiting interior pics of yours when you get there. Keep it up, this think will have a proper stance for sure!

And turbo(s). Do it.

I'm mildly impatient which is why I was looking at crate engines.

Maybe it's not the time to rush things and I should just focus on making sure I get a quality piece.

Joe,
Yeah...I'm not looking forward to laying carpet. Luckily it's nowhere in the near future for me.

Don't tempt me with the turbo idea...it has crossed my mind...many times. I'm clueless as to whether there is a quality shop in my area (Portland Oregon) that does turbo plumbing though.

I've been exploring motor options still. These are the two starting points I've been looking at:

~11.5k. Mast black label ls3 416 long block. It comes with Callies H-Beam rods, Callies crank, diamond pistons, etc...

~7k. Lingenfelter 417 short block. It comes with Callies dragon slayer crank, JE pistons, Oliver I-beam rods.

I haven't seen what rods/crank mast is using as it is not specified. I assume compstar?

Is the extra cost worth it to start with the Lingenfelter short block?

Anyone have experience with either company?

I ended up getting in touch with Ben Hermance a while back and decided to work with him on a rendering that I could stick to throughout the build. I desperately needed this to give me some sense of direction, otherwise I would keep changing things and continue wasting time and money.

I didn't give him much direction other than overall influence/theme, and that I wanted to finally get more rubber under a Nova (give me flares without ruining the car). I am more than pleased with the final out come. Eventually I'll need to find a shop that can take this on. I would like to stick to the PNW, but we'll see. Anyways....

Here it is. I welcome all feedback good or bad!

You might check out options from SDPC. At one time they were offering LS3 based 396s and 427s for just under $8k for a long block. With the CNC LS3 GM Castings I think the 427 was rated at something like 615HP. They don't advertise them on their website. But they advertise them at the shows they attend and multiple vehicle forums every once in a while.

Killer project and concept! You dove right in! JRod and Custom in Auburn (Lat-g screen name J-Rod&Custom) can handle anything you need from making the sheetmetal flares from scratch, bodywork and painting it, to plumbing and welding and whatever else you need but the interior. Check out the other Nova he built http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=47552

Why did you change to a 18" wheel?

Introducing the flares got me to look at wider tire fitment (front and rear). The change in tire width drastically limited my options in 19". It gets even worse when you are looking at >=200TW.

It was simply because there are more tire options in 18". That or I secretly like doing everything 4x times before settling...sigh...

I agree with you on the aesthetic. 19" do look better. As far as filling the wheel opening though, I'll be gaining tire height.

Going to a 335/18 vs 305/19 I'll only lose <1/3" in diameter.

Im not familiar with sizing cooling systems.

I ordered the radiator/coolers together and gave them (Autorad) intended usage (road and track) and max power output (700hp) I would need to support down the line and this is what they built.

It looks huge to me too. Maybe I trusted them too much?

jeds
09-30-2015, 04:40 PM
Moabdude,

I did. I ran into the same issue.

When looking around, I wanted to have a decent 200TW selection as well as 315 or 335 18"(front) tires. I couldn't find a good selection that would fit those requirements AND have a 19" tire to go along with it out back.

In the end, if the sizes I chose end up being a complete handling nightmare (quite possible), I'll re-evaluate. I'll keep the 19s around just incase things change and I end up wanting/needing to use them.

Slow progress....

I spent some time sorting out parallel and concentric alignment on the bell-housing. I ended up with a few shims to get things within spec. The concentric measurements were good to go so there was no need to get offset dowels.

Ordered up a clutch and go it installed. It's a Monster LT1-S. It's basically a C7 clutch with a custom billet steel flywheel and some other little bits. I've heard good things about it so I thought I'd give it a go.

It's a 335 in the front.

I'll be running an inner fender, but it will be a one off. The plan is to have removable panels bolted to the soon-to-be cage down bars.

Honestly, at the ride height the car will be at, I wouldn't have been able to use stock inner fenders anyways.

Well...I made the decision to dial-it-back a bit. I won't be doing fender flares after-all.

This is my first build and I feel like I've been over reaching and convincing myself to cram every possible idea into the car. I had to take a step back and remember what the car is being built for. I was in danger of getting myself into a position where the car would be in a perpetual state of modification (not drivable).

Anyways. I had some frustration with back spacing being slightly off on my wheels once ride height was set. It just wasn't going to work. So I put a wheel fit tool to use and got new wheels on. So far, the fit is bang-on.

It's almost too pretty to hide inside an engine bay. I might just display it on my coffee table instead.

In short...the dash does not fit well.

* The column cutout is too tight.
* The left side fitment where the insert wraps around the edge of the dash is way too tight.
* The left side of the insert is too long. I even tried trimming the bottom edge but still it didn't fit correctly.
* It seemed that no matter how it was installed, the insert would not sit straight in the dash.

I just can't seem to get it to fit.

The left side seems to stick out too far. I can't push it in because the insert hits the dash framework. You can see this interference in the last image.

The right side seems to not fit in the upper right corner. The flange that bends in on the bottom of the insert is clamped all the way across. I don't see how I could close the gap with out a significant bend in that lower flange.

Am I missing something here?

When I got the dry-sump pump mounted and attempted to install the motor, the pump ended up wanting to occupy the same space as the motor mount. I knew interference was inevitable...

I've been wanting to push the motor back for a while now. This situation finally gave me the excuse to do it.

The motor got pushed back about 12.5" from the existing motor mounts.

The new motor location is setup to give me just enough room to install/remove the dry-sump pump belt.

Well, not a ton of progress. The dash is out and the motor mounts have been tacked in but still need a bit of tweaking.

The motor mounts will be easily removable from the frame to aid in engine removal. We will be running crush tubes through the subframe rail and running bolts through the rail from the outside.

This picture gives a decent idea of where the motor sits in relation to the hub centerlines.

The last thing we did was do a trial fit of seat placement (not my seat). Needless to say, there won't be a back seat :confused59:

Next up is building the exhaust and ordering a driveline so we can get the transmission crossmember built.

This one is rated at 2000 HP / 1500 lb*ft.

Overkill to say the least.

It looks like the motor sits almost completely behind the front control arms. Should help with handling and weight distribution quite a bit!

No real updates on the car. Parts have just been rolling in. A few were unnecessary and a few were safety upgrades.

The unnecessary:
I drove up to Ultra-Carbon and picked up a trunk lid, hood, and cowl panel that I had ordered a while back. The finish on these parts is making it hard for me to want to paint over them...

Safety first:
Ordered a 22 gal. Pyrotect cell with an in-tank Weldon pump and a Holley hydramat setup. Working with Steve at Pyrotect was a great experience.

Last but not least, Dave and Mr.Sutton helped me out with getting some seats ordered. The seats are surprisingly comfortable.

I need to figure out what fire suppression system to use, so if anyone has any insight on brand/setup, that would be awesome. I've been looking at Safecraft and Lifeline so far.

I hope to have the car back at my place mid-July if all goes well. It will be nice to get some of this stuff on the car and out of my way.

Well...I got to have my turn at a crappy shop experience!

2 years ago, I dropped my car at a shop that was recommended by a few folks. The punch list wasn't long... cage, firewall, rear bulk head, move motor back, box frame.

As of 2 weeks ago, there was still no firewall (hacked out)..or bulkhead (hacked out)...or cage... and the frame hadn't been boxed. The motor had been moved, but the motor and trans mounts needed to be completely re-done.

Every month, week, day there was some excuse as to why work wasn't getting done. So...I finally made a date to just pick up the car and move on.

In the 2 weeks since I saw the car last, the frame was mostly boxed in, 80% of a cage was bent up and tacked in, and the motor mounts were 90% done. 2 freakin' years of waiting for nothing, and a big chunk of work was done at the last second in less than 2 weeks.

Now I have to comb over the car to audit all the work and see what can be salvaged, and what needs to be redone. Everything is covered in 2 years of grinding dust, parts are scattered everywhere, small bits are missing, and on and on....

I need to decide to pick up some tools and do it my damn self, or go find another shop that may or may-not jerk me around.

Silver lining is, I have my car back, and he basically didn't charge me anything for the amazing experience.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. We've all been there at one point. I was always under the impression that you were doing the work yourself at home?? What shop was it? It'll help others avoid the bad experience.

I would try and find another shop on this site that's reputable, since you "saved" all that money getting your car back for "free".

Keep pushing forward tho it's a cool build.

Some of the work was done at home, but most of the metal stuff was done at a shop.

I'm really leaning towards doing the work myself. Writing checks is boring, and I kind of feel like I'm missing out on a large part of the build process experience. I'll gladly pay someone to do body work though, when the time comes.

The shop was Racetech Motorsports (one man shop).
