View Full Version : My baby is in the hospital

My Daughter Kasey is at a junior college in Northern WY. She is a resident assistant and has to stay up until 0100 several evenings until lockdown or whatever it is called nowadays.
Last night we received a call from a friend of hers at 0200 from a clinic in Powell, a Doctor wanted to speak with us. It seems a few of them were doing kick boxing moves in the hallway and she volunteered to do one of hers (she is pretty good, but not this time). She went up and came down on her chin fracturing her jaw in three places and cracking several teeth in the back of her mouth.
My wife got on a plane and flew to Billings,MT where they took her by ambulance. She is in surgey now, they are removing three of her teeth, and wiring her jaw shut.
She wants badly to stay in college, time will tell if they will let her. She was able to call us early this morning even though her jaw wouldnt move she could speak, was in a positive mood (morphine maybe, or stubborn like me).
I tell you for an old Jarhead this made me cry, kind of hard to be 10 hours away from my baby.

Sorry to hear......wishing her a speedy recovery. College will still be there if she has to take some time off.... In the grand scheme of life, if she's healthy the other stuff can be figured out.

Thanks guys, she just out of surgery, three full breaks on the jaw and three pulled teeth. The Doctors synopsis is she is strong, and will pull through well.
Modern medicine and doctors amaze me. We as a family feel blessed.
I kept her spirits up on Facebook today with allot of pictures and jokes. I said I needed my master mechanic back in town to finish this...

Wow Joe!! Having two kids of my own -- almost grown ups now.... I can feel the pain!
I'm always worried about the distance the kids live from us! Thank God - SW looks out for Adrienne who's at Le Cordon Bleu in Austin. Can't tell ya how much calmer I am knowing he's there!
She'll get better quickly! They're young and heal well... and like you said - modern medicine is really a miracle.

No concussion means she takes after her Dad huh?
Glad it's 'relatively' minor considering the number of freak accidents we've all seen that resulted in much worse injuries.

Mom Said she was back in the room, and talking 100 miles an hour, a tactic she used as a young child to keep from her naps, as long as she talked she wouldn't fall asleep. Joni said she had to politely ask her friends to leave so she would sleep.
Apparently Billings, MT is quite a distance from Powell, WY but yet the outpour of students hasn't stopped the visits, She has made allot of friends as a RA, and is quite popular, it is a small college and they band together. I am so glad for her friendships.
Thanks guys all your kind words mean allot to mean.

Wish her well and a speedy recovery from me. She will pull through fine. After seeing what they did to my uncle's jaw after completely having it severed in multiple areas I know she will pull through just fine. Just make sure she stays on top of eating blended food if they have her wired shut.

but judging from the smile on her face there (and the doctor's prognosis) it seems she's well on her way to a full recovery...

Unknown yet Wayne they just got back to the college last night around 6. Judging by her outlook and smile in this picture I am hopeful.
The guy that is in charge of all the student RA's is on her side, but I worry about the meds. She never was one for taking medicne so she may suffer through the pain if need be to stay there (stubborn like me, when told you cant do something you do it anyways).
I will know more by the time my wife is ready to fly back tomorrow.
She wore my wife out last night and wanted to go to a movie after being released and the 100 mile drive back to Powell. I can see it in my wife's eye's she is exhausted from stress and lack of sleep.
Thanks for all the support LAT-G you guys are awesome, Helped me while I sat at home alone.

Thanks, we spoke with her last night...
She is doing much better, and has decided to tough it out until the end of the semester and come home in June. She will enroll in CSU next month and see how many credits transfer, then decide if she goes back to NW for another year, or to CSU. We dont want her to turn a 2 year- 4 year degree into a 6 year degree because of non-transfer.
She still has pain but has figured out how much medicine to take that doesnt knock her out, and allows her to study. All of her teachers have been supportive, she was going to drop math but the teacher talked her out of it, Physics is the tough one she will have a harder time with. The other credits will be no brainers.
She has always been tough ever since a little kid, and stubborn, geez wonder why.
We decided to let her make the choice, I was ready to go get her Sunday...
It sucks being 10 hours away, wish she was here wrenching...
Thanks, Joe

This is probably the final update since appears by the wireless smile she is recovered, although she said she still is wired on the top...
In her words, from Facebook...
"Hey all! To those who don't know, I got my wires off on Thursday! I'll have rubberbands for support for three more weeks but I can eat, sing, and talk! I'm thrilled, so we made giant cookies! A very big thank you to everyone who was there for me and prayed for me in my healing process! I appreciate all the love! "
Best part is spring break is right around the corner, ands will be home for a week.
Thanks,Joe

Spring break is finally here, and Kasey is home. She had her upper wires removed Friday before coming home.
We took her to the Dentist today for her exam, and he is going to remove one more tooth. We setup an appointment for an oral surgeon on Thursday.
After the Dentist she wanted to go see the Marine Corps OSO to discuss OCS, something she has wanted for quite sometime. We talked to them for two and a half hours  They are going to work with her as she recovers.
We went on a 4 mile run with Zeus on Sunday, needless to say I was the one worn out , I think I walked half of it :lmao:

Trey, I get told by my wife I never smile in pictures.
I think it took my Daughter Rachael, 15 shots to get Zeus to look at her. By then he was tired from running, Kasey was just happy to be home, and the Old man was :confused18:
But yes, I was/am a happy man, we all went that day, even though my wife and Rachael were way behind us :lmao:
My wife actually runs more than I do so I shouldn't make light of that.
Thanks, Joe

Yup smiling like a Cheshire cat. My wife isnt happy about it at all,:military: :popcorn2:
Weve have had a little fun, hiking, and so forth. Took her for a ride in the torino the other day to Home Depot, scared her a bit.:D
Her ordeal is ongoing, she has had a couple of appointments this week, and will be delayed going back to college next week. They messed up in surgery a few weeks ago and didnt get all the broken teeth out. She has a surgery appointment on Monday. She is pretty upset because it could affect her grades going back late, which will delay OCS.
So I have a few ideas to cheer her up.
great to be a Dad:D
