Well for the first time in my life I have been laid off from work. Very long story about trying to buy into a family business, but not working out, and getting layed of for speaking my mind about their laziness.

I have a couple of good leads, with a posible move to Texas. The plant is in Kosse, Texas so between Waco and Temple.

Just looking for any advice as far as good or bad about either area.

Thanks in Advance.

Dang Mike! That's heavy!

Laid off after speaking your mind as an employee? Sounds like wrongful termination right there....

Although Texas is not as Communist as our state here... and your $ goes a hell of a lot farther.

Sorry to hear that man. Don't know much about Texas other than they are still pretty "American" in beliefs (not counting the illegals that is). Lots of space, cars, guns and red meat!! LoL! :trophy-1302:

Well i live in Waco(Hewitt,TX) but work IN Temple. obviously i like Waco better. Waco is growing pretty fast and alot of the sub cities around Waco are really nice (Woodway,Speegleville,Hewitt) what else you need to know? I have lived in Waco area all my life.

Waco looks like a nice rural area. My wife and I watch that home show with the husband and wife from Waco that remodel homes. Looking at the area it looks like a place we could live.

My daughter may end up in the Austin area, and my brother lives in the Dallas area.

I used to live in Waco, it is a great place to live.

It's got everything you could want in a town.

We moved to Texas because of the favorable tax breaks and small business opportunities.

We actually moved to a much smaller town called Crockett because my wife and I have reached the point in our lives where we wanted to slow down and just curl up in front of a fireplace this time of year. LOL. Yes it does get a little cold some days down here, but when we were in Waco visiting last month I was still in a short sleeved shirt.

The summers of course are a different story with high humidity and average temps approaching the century mark.

I have small kids so schools are important, good neighborhoods. Places to stay away from.

"Fixer Upper" we have been watching too.

How are the winters? Any autocrosses near?

Camcojb- yeah they live off of hwy 6 in speegleville and they have a store selling antique furniture in waco called Magnolia.

Obviously there are bad areas in Waco just stay away from east Waco area and you will be fine.best areas are Hewitt,Woodway and SPeegleville in my opinion. Midway school district is very nice, built a huge high school and a elementary school not to long ago. Quite nice neighborhoods. Winters? What is that? No winters are mild but usually jan. and feb. being the coldest. Well I say that it will be 65 tomorrow. As far as autocross I am not sure, I would bet Dallas has a few events as well as Austin which are no more than 2hours away. You are basically in between Dallas and Austin.

Dallas events are not that far away. Austin has the new COTA track, I know they have some events there, but I moved from Austin 8 years ago and don't keep up much with the local scene any more. Texas World Speedway is in College Station which is 1-1/2 hours from Waco. There is also the annual BBORR (Big Bend Open Road Race), that is a bit farther.

My parents live in Whitney which is a short drive north of Waco. Probably 2 hours at the most from my house which is north of Dallas to Waco. I have driven most of the back roads between San Antonio and Dallas. The drive from Whitney to Waco on 933 is quite nice. Speed limits on these little back roads are often 70 and the pavement is pretty smooth, lots of sweeping curves and gentle elevation changes. There are a lot of nice highways in Texas to take road trips. I-35 is not one of them... too busy. When driving from Austin to Dallas I usually turn off I-35 in Waco and head across State Hwy 31 to Corsicana, then take I-45 North into Dallas. It is not unusual for me to see less than a dozen cars on the trip between Waco and Corsicana once I turn off US 84 and leave Waco behind.

One of my favorite road trips is to head out of Dallas through Cleburne on 67 through Glen Rose and pick up 281 South to San Antonio. Most of the trip is through the "Hill Country" area. There are a few cruises in the nicer months. Here is info on some of the areas you can visit: http://www.hillcountrycruising.com/

Really sorry to hear about this Mike. I moved out of the Bay Area primarily because of the public schools for my kids also so I know how you feel. There is a government website where schools are required to post their scores which I believe are based from Star Testing. Heard the scoring system may have changed awhile back but getting back to the point, I'll see if I can find the site. My wife knows where to find it but she's sleeping right now.

EDIT: Found it. ritter.tea.state.tx.us/perfreport/tapr/index.html

open up the site and go to 2013-14 and then open District Report.

Well I have accepted a job offer, so I am back working, in Livermore, Ca.

They said if everything works out like they think in a year or two, they might be begging me to come to Texas.

We'll see what the future brings.
