View Full Version : Might as well - C/K5

Since the GMC C15 is mostly done and the Camaro's out of my hands at the moment, my buddy Giffin and I decided we should start another project.

Kidding, we started like three other projects. We both have vehicular ADHD and have too many ideas floating around at any point in time.

This one starts off with the collection of spare parts we had floating around:

A complete 2002 Corvette chassis, originally bought just for the suspension. I acquired it cheap from the guy who bought the complete wreck. He wanted the motor, electrics and gas tanks. This includes the 6 speed manual gear box and fiberglass springs.
A complete running and rusting 1970 Chevy K5 - it's a sickness, I love this body style. My friend's Mother in-law needed to sell it after her husband died. No one else wanted it and I gave way too much for it, but it was a good cause.
An all aluminum 5.3L L33 that I bought cheaply and needed help. Giffin rebuilt this, as it was another "might as well, since I had the parts".
A set of Grand Sport rims bought way too cheap
A Whipple side mount blower... bought with no project in mind
Billy Boat C5 headers in stainless
Used injectors, ECM and a bunch of other stuff just kicking around
Too much time on our hands?!?!?

Giffin is also the guy that builds my engines. We bounce ideas off of each other and come up with some really outstanding ones. We're both supposed to be thinning the herd, so we tell our wives we've sold them, but in fact, we shuffle projects to each other... My wife is aware, but pretends not to know.

So, yeah, this project is a "might as well". I sold him the chassis, I had the truck and the engine, etc. Giffin has a frame table, we both have welders, experience and no common sense. Chevy made a C5 in 1970, it was a 2wd Blazer (still called a K5). Most folks call the 5th generation Corvette a C5. Giffin and I thought it all made sense. We talked each other into the 104.5" wheel base both C5's share.

Y'all in? I have a boat load of pics and we've just finished dis-assembly...

Oh and since we like big meats and we cannot lie... It's hip to be "square" with 345/40ZR19 front and rear.

The body will be a "roadster" style, cut to fit the Corvette seating position. More carbon fiber. Might be fun to show up and race.

Corvette chassis was a convertible, so it's plenty stiff. It's also upside down in the pics.

Old school double bump cage, hiding a lot of chromo in the sheet metal.

A labor of fun/love.

I like it! Interesting to see how this comes together.

Pretty tall body however, I think I would section a few inches out of it. :)

It's why we started with a rusty shell, that's solid in the middle :)

Sweet another "Might As Well" project. Mine also picked up that name as it seems to be what is said the most during the build/ordering parts!

Love blazers, so excited to see this one come together!

I was just thinking the other day about the K5 my buddy and I drove around in HS and the stuff we got into, it was that exact color too .... he did plywood the back of the cab cuz he didn't want to put the top on and lose p/u space.

I think a C5 with an LS is an awesome idea .... I'd drive the heck outa that! :y0!:

Well, the other K5 we're working is a one ton 4wd with a Cummins. That's a different site though. Same color.

I love watching your builds, even if they do make me incredibly jealous and envious...

It's not on this site.

Well, it should be. I'd like to see this, and who doesn't like trucks? There are many here already.

Meh, it's a diesel conversion, 4x4 on 37" tires and one tons... been done many times. Also, won't take a corner anywhere near what my other projects will :). Same is true for the 70 K10 we're working on.

Is it me, or do the 19x12 Z06 rims and tires look small on this?

Thought about sectioning the body... but also think a 22x12" Budnik from my buddy Jay (Swain) would work well, with a taller tire front and rear.

I think Giff starts assembly on the C5 chassis soon.

My friend has a new GMC pickup and I saw his, either 22 or 24" wheels and thought holy crap those are gigantic! He put them on and that pickup swallowed them up and they look great on there. Nowhere near as wide as your thinking of, they would look great.

I got 22's for my 68 C10. I personally think 22's are a perfect size for trucks and SUV's...not too big and not too small. Now, I know for auto crossing, track events, etc, 22's are too big. But, just for show, cruising, etc, it's a perfect look to me.

So far, we're doing 19x12" Z06 rims on all four corners. (I had them kicking around)

Trying to figure out tires. We can obviously clear anything.

Who can help me with a rendering?

So, after a lot of drama with a few projects, Giffin and I decided to focus on the Camaro and the Diamond T.

The body and other K5 specific parts left today. Still have the chassis, engine, trans, rear end etc.

Starting to think it all goes... then again, there's a C2 Fiberglass shell for sale.

I think this is on hold until we get through a bunch of other projects. We'll continue selling what we can, as it's just not in our focus.

Any luck with the rendering?

I heard Foose isn't doing anything LOL.

Try Ben or Ben....

Ben H or Ben with speedtech, iirc

I had Ben do one on my Camaro.

Notice what I posed about this? Project's cancelled in favor of two others.
