View Full Version : Engine point straight back?

I'm kind of embarrassed that I don't know this off the top of my head and that I didn't noticed when I did my swap. My engine doesn't appear to point straight back down the car. I know it's offset to the passenger side like it should be. Should it also point straight back?

My subframe is square. I double checked that before I did the connectors. All I did when I put my engine in was drop it in place and flip the transmission mount pad upside down. I'm fairly certain I didn't change it's location side to side but that was four years ago now so maybe my memory is fuzzy. Since looks can be deceiving, how can I verify if it is pointed straight back or not? Plum bob the crank pulley and drive shaft yoke and verify offset measuring between the frame rails?

Thanks

What motor did you install? Traditional Pontiac or an LS?

According to his sig, it is a LT1.

Yes, just my LT1/T56 combo. I used the Chevy mounts and holes in the factory subframe when switching from the 403 Olds/auto setup.

is the tailshaft centered in the tunnel?

Dunno. I can find out. UGA's at halftime. I better make it quick. BRB.

Should it be though? I thought the tunnel was centered with the car and that because of the offset to the passenger side, the tail shaft, drive shaft, and pinion gear/rear end yoke would be offset in the tunnel as well.

Did a quick measurement of the trans mount location between the frame rails. It's currently offset approximately 1 inch to the passenger side.

Is it causing a problem currently?

Leave sleeping dogs lay...if theres no real issues pretend you know nothing about it. I do believe that it does have something to do with balance of driver, steering, brakes etc. The off set helps balance the front end weight

I don't think so, Todd. I do have a highway speed vibration that I believe to be drive line related since it's MPH dependent. I don't remember it being there before I did the rear springs. I figured I'd dig into it more once I get the new rear end in the car.

The offset isn't my concern. The engine appears to be angled towards the rear passenger wheel. I only noticed it today because I had the hood off working on getting the g braces back in the bay. After I get the new rear end into the car, I'm moving onto exhaust and building my own headers. Since they will be tucked tightly to the car, I need to make sure the engine is indeed correct before I build them.

Thanks

The name has escaped me Andrew.... Something....has done a write up on pro-touring.com about driveline angles. He has a 68-69 GTO I believe he eventually went to a cv style joint with a carbon fiber shaft but, do a search over there I'm sure you'll find it and learn how to check the angles and such

I know what posts you're referring to. Thanks for the reminder. I'll be sure to swing by and read up on it again.

I do think I have a good idea as to what's causing my vibrations. When I changed rear springs, this raised my car and pulled the drive shaft out of the transmission more. Combine that with the play there is in the slip yoke and I think that's why I picked up this vibration after the rear suspension was done. I'm not leaving the rear end raised up like it is so I guess I'll be swapping the springs out sooner than later to get the rear back down to where it was with the stocks springs.

I'd still like to figure out if my engine is pointing straight back or not or if it even matters.

Thanks
