Guys, I lost the vin tag for one of my cars and can't find it anywhere. This is the vertical tag that goes in a Chevelle door jamb. It's a simple tin tag with the VIN stamped into it. I still have the cowl tag but need the other. Any suggestions as to what to do? Thanks in advance, Dave.

I think most DMVs and AAA will have to do a "vin verification". You would have to make an appointment with them. But if you have the dash Vin still in place with the registration already in your name I don't think the door tag would be that big of a deal.

cowl tag is not your vin tag. it is a fisher production sequence number. It will have to be matched to the hidden vin on the car to be verified.

Dave, in IL you would have to have the Secretary of State Police inspect it. They issue it a "NEW" vin tag and a "NEW" number. They will NOT issue you the same number and the replacement tag looks completely different from the org and they will want to attach it to the top of the dash "NOT" in the org location!!

You will have to contact your DMV to see how they handle it but I'm sure it's no better and maybe worse in Cali?? I would try your best to find the org tag!

It's not a big deal. CHP will do an inspection and check your body and frame for the hidden vins. If all is there then they will issue a new tag. It will not be the original.

I just hope your frame is original. It may get sticky if it's different. But I'm with Charley, try to find your original.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. It's still on the original frame it the numbers are in the top of the rails under the body which could be fun since the car is done. The original tag is gone. I spent three hours looking for it, sifting through trash cans, the vacuum etc etc. the one on the firewall is gone too since we smoothed it all out. Gonna keep looking for help.

I needed that done on my 66 Chevelle, plus the DMV issued the "model" # as the vin, their mistake and i still had to have the CHP verify, they take the vehicle from you and verify it "confidentually". The effin DMV still denied it, they i had the CHP take the paper work to the DMV and finally got it (ironically my CHP appt was on Sept 12, 2001, needless to say they cancelled it, my next appt was Sept 12, 2002). Wasn't that big of a deal....had similar issues with my Camaro, much easier and only took one CHP to verify and DMV was much easier this time around
